Gyo just really didn’t hit for me. The big threat being walking fish, the psychological horror being the girlfriends inability to handle stinky smells, the farting and gas… it wasn’t so much creepy or unsettling as wacky as hell.
The fish thing hit weird and the focus on it for so long really killed the impact of the plot. The circus animals scenes felt really gimmicky too.
Biological weapon gone wrong, sunken on a submarine until it breached, and will consume all life on the planet building larger and larger monstrosities. Very interesting plot, I wish it was told differently.
I don't like they changed the beginning to be not about a couple, but about 3 girls. I just really liked the very specific situation where girlfriend says awful fish smell follows her everywhere and you introduce her to Gyo.😂

This is more nightmare fuel worthy than the deformed women.
Junji Ito seems like an incredible author and I would love to read his works. Unfortunately I have a massive body horror trigger so I physically cannot look at the art for any substantial amount of time
Is that the book this pic is from?

TLDR for the comic: earthquake happens and reveals a new geological wall with tons of human shaped holes. People are drawn to strip and slide into the hole that’s “made for them” and later it’s found that there was another location with twisted stretched “human”-shaped holes. At the end if I remember, you start to see something coming out of the darkness in one of the second holes.
Also once someone enters their hole, they find that they are unable to move backwards out of the hole and can only continue forwards. They find themselves almost sliding forward. As they continue on, the shape of the hole slowly deforms until it has crushed and rearranged their body into the monstrous figure that comes out the other side.
I haven't seen anything about execution. Part of the horror is that these holes somehow are a perfect match for the people, as unlikely as that is. Also not knowing what exactly will emerge - twisted beyond recognition, driven by a compulsion that can no longer be satisfied. The existence of the fault must be purposeful, but not anything familiar to us.
Ah, I forgot about that part. I guess I prefer when this kind of story leaves it unexplained.
Although the idea that a person is doomed to repeat the same torture through reincarnations is a whole other kind of existencial horror.
Junji Ito is well known for his style of horror. It’s not in your face. It creeps under your skin and tickles the part of your brain that gets unnerved by the eerie and ill explained.
Continually creeps me out just thinking about it years later.
Doesn't help that I have this little hand held device I have to use at work that you put a flat strip of material in one end, and it comes out the other end curved. It makes me think of it every single time ...
It's based on a manga, where you can find a "you" shaped hole, however, as you go deeper into the hole, the hole will very slightly change as you go down, slowly changing your body shape until when you eventually exit on the other side you don't even look human.
No I mean the damage is already done. The hole stretched and squeezed the body to contort it to that
Putting it through does nothing because it’ll be going from a tight space to a more bigger space
Literally me when Arnold's face puffs up and eyes bug out in Total Recall when they're out of oxygen and then go back to normal the second there's air on Mars lol, like, they should be permanently deformed from that right? >!Unless it really is a delusion and Quaid is still at Recall that is.!<
The comic is juxtaposing Disney and Japanese horror manga. I didn't recognize that until I saw the legs on the fish—in the manga it references (by Junji Ito) there are sharks on mechanical legs running around eating people. Another of his manga shows people finding holes shaped exactly like them in a mountainside that they can't resist walking into, but that wasn't enough to jog my memory.

Didn’t know they were into the Deutsche Demokratische Republik like that
That’s what I keep thinking too! We should form a club!
The Stasi is helping everyone find their holes. Just don't ask from whom they got the information
This has no right to make me laugh, but still it does.
It's slowly dancing this way!
This is so fucking funny. Bravo
Is it... is it playing Just Dance?
Dance dance revolution, or DDR.
REVOLUTION? OVERTHROW THE GOVERNMENT? UHH... I THINK SO
Right, thanks, that one. But still, I don't think that was the weird thing.
I love creepy Flounder
I completely missed that. The legs are a nod to another creepy manga by the same author, Gyo I think it was called.
yup Gyo. smelly fish on robot legs😃
Powered by farts
Powered by decay, but yes, that's how it worked out for the infected humans.

yeah I agree, not my favorite of Junji It's work
Junji Ito in general tends to skirt the line between horror and wackiness.

Not going to lie this anime genuinely scared me. It was so intense.
I don't like they changed the beginning to be not about a couple, but about 3 girls. I just really liked the very specific situation where girlfriend says awful fish smell follows her everywhere and you introduce her to Gyo.😂
What anime is it? I must know.
It's called Gyo
Checks out Junji Ito, the author of the manga.
Surprised they didn't include the noose balloons somehow too

I have no mouth and I can't SCREEE-
Any hole will fit ted
Wait I love this
The crossover no one asked for……
In all fairness, I have asked for The Little Mermaid as a Shadow Over Innsmouth prequel.
That's what the live action was.
If the mermaids sacrifice sailors to Dagon, I actually need to watch it.
Prequel because of the implications of a marine creature breeding with a human?
Because it explains how a town ended up overrun by unholy half-breeds.

For Wiley it should say “made *by* me” lol

wait lark made that lol
Junji Ito seems like an incredible author and I would love to read his works. Unfortunately I have a massive body horror trigger so I physically cannot look at the art for any substantial amount of time
There's a book he illustrated in his usual style that's just about his cats
Is that the book this pic is from? https://preview.redd.it/50viz4ghrbuc1.jpeg?width=1909&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1a77eca3f0ebccf35f966e2c47c817818eed04cc
Still got some pretty graphic scenes though
Let me guess dove, rat or possum?
Can someone tell me what thing is about 'this is my hole'? I know its from that horror manga artist but never saw the result, so im very confused rn.

Thanks. That explains all the memes i have seen about this.
It’s called the Enigma of Amigara Fault if you’d like to look it up.
Also once someone enters their hole, they find that they are unable to move backwards out of the hole and can only continue forwards. They find themselves almost sliding forward. As they continue on, the shape of the hole slowly deforms until it has crushed and rearranged their body into the monstrous figure that comes out the other side.
It's like 10 pages and readily available online, you should read it
Narrator: he should not read it.
feel free to read it, it’s pretty short but *very* well-drawn.
Geological, not geographical. It was rocks, not a map.
:) lol, thx for the correction. Corrected it
I think it was implied to be an execution method from long ago or something? They werent supposed to reemerge
Yeah but I think they're referring to when the main character has a dream about being an early human and being executed via hole
Ah, I forgot about that part. I guess I prefer when this kind of story leaves it unexplained. Although the idea that a person is doomed to repeat the same torture through reincarnations is a whole other kind of existencial horror.
It really is, like Gregor from What We Do In The Shadows but played for body horror instead of laughs.
There's something **slowly** coming towards us!
Comic Dump: Junji Ito - The Enigma of Amigara Fault https://imgur.com/gallery/AjfDC
I have been looking for the whole manga for some time you random stranger have my thanks. As for the manga I was expecting worse to be honest
Junji Ito is well known for his style of horror. It’s not in your face. It creeps under your skin and tickles the part of your brain that gets unnerved by the eerie and ill explained.
You go through it and are like, I guess that is a little creepy, then realize it’s been 2 weeks and it’s still on your mind.
That manga about that toxic sentient tongue still haunts me a decade later augh
Pretty much body horror. The oil one sticks out to me more.
I hate that one, for all the right reasons. The story that stuck with me the most though is The Long Dream.
Reading this is what made me realize I have claustrophobia. I almost had a panic attack while reading it. Thanks Ito-sensei 👍👍
No, you didn’t have claustrophobia but now you do.
"enigma of amigara fault" is what you want to look up. That's the manga that it's from, there also used to be an animation on YouTube on it I think
read it, it's good [here](https://imgur.com/t/2spooky4me/AjfDC)
Just did. Its very good.
Junji Ito
Junji ito
Jesus Christ, I wish I had never read that other comic...perma nightmare fuel
Fuckin seriously. After that I read Uzumaki but nothing in there comes even close.
Some references are best left unknown
And that's one of Ito's tamer ones.
Continually creeps me out just thinking about it years later. Doesn't help that I have this little hand held device I have to use at work that you put a flat strip of material in one end, and it comes out the other end curved. It makes me think of it every single time ...
I still think Hanging Balloons is the best one.
Ah, delightful
The idea of a horror film that starts off like a Disney animated production that devolves into the horror is a really intriguing idea.
have you watched Don't hug me i'm scared
Well, this should be fun tonight... ![gif](giphy|3o6ZtaiPZNzrmRQ6YM)

I hate this. Good job
Holy fucking shit. I’m reading GYO right now and Flounder is sending me I can’t 😭
Well at least she's still somewhat recognizable. Others seem worse.
It took me a minute to understand... then I didn't want to understand anymore
Oh boy can't wait to see this on all of the explains the joke subreddits several times.
I just watched a video on Junji Ito's art and I know for a fact that I wouldn't have gotten this if I hadn't watched it.
Spirals allllll the way down.
What an unexpected crossover. I am so into this, thank you.
I love this so much. First comic in a while that got a reaction out of me.
lmao the gyo reference

What-
This is amazing
I fucking love this. And it only took 3 panels.
…
Thanks, I hate it
Oh no…
DDDDRRRRReam is a wish your heart makes 🎶
Genius crossover, should have kept it secret though.
Well done
Whats the joke here?
[Classic junji Ito horror manga](https://imgur.com/t/2spooky4me/AjfDC) you should read it it's good
Definitely super tame but Definitely a great read.
yea it's not a super in your face terrifying manga like some of ito's other works
It's based on a manga, where you can find a "you" shaped hole, however, as you go deeper into the hole, the hole will very slightly change as you go down, slowly changing your body shape until when you eventually exit on the other side you don't even look human.
Read Enigma of Amigara Fault.
So like if you are stretched out from one of these holes, couldn't you just enter the stretched hole on the otherside and return to normal?
I believe the manga mentions that the sides of the wall are serrated, so you can only travel in one direction.
How about walking backwards with a chisel?
…. That… literally isn’t how that works?
I mean you probably shouldn’t be able to stretch out like that either but it works
No I mean the damage is already done. The hole stretched and squeezed the body to contort it to that Putting it through does nothing because it’ll be going from a tight space to a more bigger space
Literally me when Arnold's face puffs up and eyes bug out in Total Recall when they're out of oxygen and then go back to normal the second there's air on Mars lol, like, they should be permanently deformed from that right? >!Unless it really is a delusion and Quaid is still at Recall that is.!<

This is a crime against music notation

No, what gave you this idea?
What a terrible day to have eyes
flounder with the spider legs is a nice touch
**THIS** is _absolutely_ the kind of mash-up brilliance I love to see! Bravo OP. This is brilliant. XD
Thank you!
Cindrrella
Thats the kind of stuff I hope to see to make my nightmares take on a new dimension
Nope nope nope nope.
Now that I understand this I like it.
Your stuff is great! Just added you on insty.
Thank you!
I love that I get this now
wtf
I never did figure out if they where alive or dead. I just assumed that they were deformed corpses.
They wouldn't be saying Durr... Durr... Durr... if they were dead.
thanks i hate it
I was like, "WTF is the joke here," until I saw the legs on the fish.
How does that explain anything?

The legs on the fish are obviously the punchline
