It’s not. Occam’s Razor is basically “the simplest explanation is usually the right one”. Which is why professors use the “if you hear hoofbeats think horses not zebras” as the example. Because horses are more common, so you’re more likely to have a run in with a horse than a zebra.
Because “common” and “simple” are two different words. The most common cause of fever is an infection. The most common cause of weight loss is inadequate nutrition. The most common cause of bone pain is injury. However if a patient has all 3 of those, the most parsimonious explanation might be they have cancer, rather than an infection and malnutrition and an injury.
Technically we could argue about it, but language isn't always 100% logical. Language is organic and changes constantly. As far as I can tell, people use these phrases interchangeably. So in a linguistic way they mean the same
(I might be wrong tho)
Yeah. I’ve been sick since January, and until last month they kept telling me that it was a little virus and if I just waited a few more weeks it would clear up. Finally decided to refer me to a specialist who can look for something more serious. So we’ll see.
Of course now that I have an appointment to see the specialist my symptoms have started to get better. I’m not cancelling it though, because then the symptoms will come back full force.
I thought this was a reference to the movie, The Other Guys...
Hoitz: That wasn't a security team. He said, "Don't let these people take me." I mean, when you hear hooves, you think horses, not zebras.
Gamble: What about donkeys or deer? They have hooves.
I didn’t even see it until you said to turn it upside down. I thought are they like donkey silhouettes on a paper towel or something??? Then it made sense lol
What you are seeing are zebras from above. The black is their shadow. The shit resolution and lack of contrast between the zebras and the sand makes them hard to see.
Other tricks to try.
Zoom in.
Zoom out.
View with your phone tilted.
The tiny slivers are actually both black and white; they are the actual zebras, mainly their backs, photographed from above. The purely black part is the shadow. It is larger in this picture.
I found if you look at the bottom most shadow and zoom in its the easiest to see. Imagine you're in a helicopter directly above it with the sun to the south creating the shadow(I hope this helps I had to look way too long to figure it out LOL)
Like someone else said, it's like showing the sillouette (however tf you spell it) of an alpaca, then saying "lolll no you're wrong" when someone says llama
Lot of people were fooled on this one which is pretty interesting. The top-down shadow style picture is popular. One with camels won photograph of the year and is pretty well-known.

If you hear hoofbeats think shadow zebra, not horses.
I hope this is a Scrubs reference.
Common saying in medicine: If you hear hoof beats, think horses not zebras. As in, think of common diagnoses before rare ones.
Thanks, was not aware that it was common in medicine. Makes sense though. The only time I had ever heard it was in Scrubs.
The ol’ zebra/horse medical maxim is how I ended up misdiagnosed for years.
Also known as Occam's razor 🪒
That’s different
How so?
It’s not. Occam’s Razor is basically “the simplest explanation is usually the right one”. Which is why professors use the “if you hear hoofbeats think horses not zebras” as the example. Because horses are more common, so you’re more likely to have a run in with a horse than a zebra.
? That's exactly what the horse / zebra phrase is about
I was agreeing with you and saying “it’s not different”
Oh, I misunderstood it
>That’s different >How so? >it’s not Context clues. They said it’s not different

The fact that many people are not smart enough to see the difference doesn’t make them the same.
Dude whatever. Keep your opinion
This is why it takes so long to diagnose some rarer diseases like Celiac. They rule out everything else first.

If you mean the phrase in general, no, it was used in House MD too and I'm pretty sure it's just an actual saying.
currently watching greys anatomy and have head this a fair few times
It’s just a saying referencing the concept of **Occam's razor**
I thought this was a reference to the movie, The Other Guys... Hoitz: That wasn't a security team. He said, "Don't let these people take me." I mean, when you hear hooves, you think horses, not zebras. Gamble: What about donkeys or deer? They have hooves.
Stripey horses. 😂
Flip it upside down
I didn’t even see it until you said to turn it upside down. I thought are they like donkey silhouettes on a paper towel or something??? Then it made sense lol
I flipped it upside down and still don't get it. 🤨 Is it ink splotches or something?
they're zebras from birds eye view, and the "horses" are the shadows.
...goddamnit. I see it now. My eyes and brain just refused pretty hard on this one.
It might've been easier if the image was more than 14 pixels
r/countablepixels lol.
A few more pixels would've been helpful.
You made me down vote the post instead
Thank you!
That was the first thing I tried because that works often on this sub or the illusion one and I still don’t get it lol. Edit: I see it now!
What you are seeing are zebras from above. The black is their shadow. The shit resolution and lack of contrast between the zebras and the sand makes them hard to see. Other tricks to try. Zoom in. Zoom out. View with your phone tilted.
No, just zoom way in so you can actually see the zebras.
Nope, didn’t work. Should I disable auto rotate on my phone?
No no no just put it upside down in a container filled with water. The liquid should hold the screen so that it doesn't auto rotate 👍👌
Reddit comments is where I come for all my life hacks.
oooohhhhh
Bro what? That’s like showing the silhouette of llama and saying GOTCHA when someone guesses alpaca You really got us
Actually, I think the joke is that we're only looking at the shadows and don't immediately recognize that it's a full top view of the zebras' backs.
I see it now! What I thought was the shadow was the real animal and vice-versa.
I'm so confused. The tiny little black slivers is what yall thought was the animal? Is the large outline not the zebra?
No, it is not. The tiny black sliver is part of the actual animal.
Okay. You got me. I need a drawing lol. I still don't know what I'm doing wrong.
The tiny slivers are actually both black and white; they are the actual zebras, mainly their backs, photographed from above. The purely black part is the shadow. It is larger in this picture.
It would help if the pic wasn't as low res as possible, can't zoom in to that shit at all unless you're the pixel whisperer
I found if you look at the bottom most shadow and zoom in its the easiest to see. Imagine you're in a helicopter directly above it with the sun to the south creating the shadow(I hope this helps I had to look way too long to figure it out LOL)
Another comment suggested to flip the image, works great
Thank you, that was all I needed. They were very close to the color of the sand until I flipped it.
It doesn't help the image is bad quality.
Oohhh that it is... If only there were a couple of pixels more...
Back in my day there were only four pixels and we had to all share them.
Higher resolution version: https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/002/348/624/002.jpg
Took until your comment to finally figure out what the heck I was supposed to be looking at
I thought they were weevils :c (when I flipped the Pic upside-down, I mean)
It's not a silhouette, just a shadow
Ok change my response to shadow then, same energy
No because the actual zebra is camouflaged which makes the shadow look like the actual animal
Yes, because a beige alpaca on sand would still be camouflaged and have the similar shadow to an alpaca
yep and that would be a fun one too.
Yeah and that would be a good post
r/countablepixels too. These could be fucking bugs for all I can tell. Is it worse on mobile? Maybe it's just me.

I think old one was with camels. Unless I am victim of mandela effect
I think the camels one from 2005 was the first to get popular, and then everyone started doing it lol
I thought they were walking on paper towel
That was my first thought too.
Wow, what a great one! Best I’ve seen on here in awhile
Nice!😊
I like this one.
I know this is an old one but its a fucking good one.
It took me way too long to realize what exactly tf this was
It's a Jigglypuff as seen from above.
That’s basically horses they are equine
This is AI, the shadows don’t have stripes on them
Donkeys
Spicy donkeys
Sponkeys
Which is correct? - Zeb-raa - Zee-bra
Safari guides in Africa all said ‘Zeb-raa’
Influence of British English. People in the UK cross the street at Zeb-raa crossings.
depends on the country you live but they are all correct
zee-bra
Zee-bruh
What is it
zebras
And their shadows
This isn't confusing perspective, it's stupid op
It is confusing perspective. What you on about?
Like someone else said, it's like showing the sillouette (however tf you spell it) of an alpaca, then saying "lolll no you're wrong" when someone says llama
Confusing because the bit that looks like the horse is actually the shadow, and the bit that looks like a shadow is actually the zebra.
ohhh i'm stupid, mb
Yeah haha I thought the same thing when I first saw it. Turned my phone upside down and was like “shiii didn’t even see that at first”
It is now.
It's little horse
Ceci n'est pas une pipe
Zed bras
Ninja horses with camouflaged zebra shadows. Deadly.
Cebras
Petah the hworse is here
Am I the only one who saw toilet paper here?
The title needs work, but this is a good one
Ugh. I had to search it and find when it was posted in much better quality 5 years ago to understand this one.

I don't know what kind of birds would be hunting zebras. But if pterodactyls ever came back from the dead, this would be incredible camoflauge.
r/fakealbumcovers
For a second there I had thought the background was toilet paper with… well, definitely not horses on it.
Meh.
I thought it was donkeys lol
Miniature horses on a dirty paper towel
Was prepared to down vote because i missed it so bad. Had to read the comments to see it. Very good.
Striped horses you say.
Nah this one is fucking wild
Lot of people were fooled on this one which is pretty interesting. The top-down shadow style picture is popular. One with camels won photograph of the year and is pretty well-known.
some jigglypuff as seen from above type stuff
Well no, they are donkeys
Oh wow this is a good one, or I’m really stupid
I see tiny horses on a dirty toilet paper
Not horses. Still equines.
Looks like zebras
This pic nearly made an ass out of me
That's a really good one
I thought they were tiny horses on a dirty mattress
Holy crap! These pictures are so much crazier when you're stoned!
i saw the silhouette and immediately thought zebra, but then i was confused on why they were all black DX
Snakes. Why’d it have to be snakes?
It's stripey asses.
On mobile you need to zoom in.
I count zebra as a kind of horse
On mobile you need to zoom in. Either that or I need to up my contact prescription
Cows don't look like cows on film, you gotta use horses...
Moose?
Took me a while. I was trying to see if they're camels. Lol
I knew they were zebras instantly from their lil guts!
You're right. It's donkeys.
I can barely see the stripes lol them shadows or what?
I don't get it
Someone posted better resolution image, just zoom in https://www.reddit.com/r/confusing_perspective/comments/1d75n78/its_not_horses/l6yhead/
I read the caption on like “well duh they’re donkeys” just to click the picture and realize it’s zebras 😂
Weird how much the ground looks like leather
Zebras are so chonky.
I don't know why but I think zebras would taste really good.
yooo this is so cool!! i’ve never rlly seen their camouflage in action before!
I feel like I’m probably the only Evangelion nerd, but anyone else think of Leliel, the 12th angel?
I see horses, zebras, and donkeys.
I thought it was a shit stained blanket at first
I thought these were tiny horse statues on a dirty napkin
It's horses
Why are they on a paper towel? /s
oh wow thats pretty good.
“When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras”
Thats what the Zebra lobby wants us to think at least!
