It's been routinely demonized since Chernobyl out of a, now unfounded, fear that it could happen again. Green parties have universally campaigned against it, too, not helping matters. Germany's decision to kill their nuclear power sector was due to Fukushima, believing that it proves their fear about it.
Yet nuclear remains the safest, most efficient source of power so far.
Fukushima was that much of a problem because it was so old it's construction predated tectonic plate theory. If there hadn't been such resistance to nuclear, Fukushima would not have been in use and newer, safer designs built in safe locations would have been used. But because resistance to nuclear never comes with any willingness to reduce consumption, the only option is to keep the oldies running.
