We have a waffle house across the street from our waffle house where I live.

StarkRavingNormal

Waffle house knows some people just aint gonna bother turning left across traffic to eat.

[deleted]

Remember that Waffle House is critical to the souths response to local disasters. Got a saying in Florida: Your good to bunker down unless Waffle House closes shop. I once saw a waffle house boarded up and had a heart attack: That means shit is so fucked you should run.

CapitanChicken

Same a bit further north. "how bad is the snow storm? Well, waffle house is open, it can't be too bad" also use it as a gauge to determine if schools were gonna shut down for the day.

hatuhsawl

I don’t know if you know but some guy at FEMA coined a kind of unofficial thing that specifically used Waffle House closings as an indicator of how bad weather events are https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waffle_House_Index

rotunda4you

>Remember that Waffle House is critical to the souths response to local disasters. Not since the pandemic. Most of the 20+ waffle houses in my city aren't 24 hours anymore. One of them doesn't even offer dine in eating and it's take out only.

autoassembler

Pretty sure that means we've officially entered the end times

honeypinn

My taco bell is on the left and I've spent untold amounts of time trying to get out/taking a right and turning around.

CarlCaliente

my top priority is getting home while my food is still warm if traffic makes it impossible I'll never visit

honeypinn

The problem is I'm a vegetarian and Taco Bell is the most accommodating of all the fast food places near me. So really I have no choice.

arksien

Honestly not only is this true, but there's another layer to it as well. A very large number of Waffle House locations are at rest-stop "towns" that are a little oasis of business along the interstate system. If you're on a long road trip/a trucker and need a break, the ease of getting off the exit and having a sit-down diner "right there" is honestly enough to get a lot of people to simply pull right in. If it's a busy stretch of highway, enough people will be doing this in either direction to justify having 2 locations, one for each direction of travel.

skysetter

How can I convince these people we feel the same way in Washington?

s-yuck

We have a Pancake House down meridian, it's not the same.

InfiniteSlimes

I moved to Nevada and I absolutely love it here. But the sheer lack of Waffle House is certainly trying.

Mscreep

I lived in Florida for a time and no joke there was a Waffle House, some other building, and then another Waffle House!! It wasn’t even on the other side of the street!! And then like three more buildings down, around the corner and two more buildings down…..WAS ANOTHER WAFFLE HOUSE.

[deleted]

No, but the “Seattle craze” was pretty much a meme starting in 1998. People were already starting to make fun of Star Bucks (like Central Perk on Friends) and grunge music was losing popularity. 90s culture came and went fast it seems.

hoppinrob

Subway and dollar general are almost as frequent

[deleted]

In Georgia, on I-20 some exits have Waffle Houses on both sides of the bridge. In case you need more waffles right after you had waffles before you get back on interstate.

kildar83

I love that about Georgia! I’m from Birmingham, when I start seeing double Waffle Houses I know I’m getting close to Atlanta.

LessText_MoreContext

Bonus for when your leaving Atlanta and you when you pull up, that waffle house is like "too" sketchy for the level you're at right now; so just go one exit up! Or the one after that if you're laughing and missed the first one

HellblazerPrime

One post-DragonCon Sunday **several** years ago, on the way out of Atlanta some friends and I stopped at Waffle Houses across the street from each other. We pulled into the first one and the waitress who happened to be cleaning the booth at the window in front of our parking spot gave us an evil eye that haunts my dreams. Never before and not since have I seen such a baleful glare. At this point it was more than twenty years ago, and to this *day* I could pick that woman out of a lineup. We didn't get out of the car. We didn't even turn the engine off. We just put it in reverse, turned around, and went to the one across the street. We ordered, ate, paid, walked out the door to cross the parking lot... and my hand to GOD, we noticed when we were almost to the car that she was standing beside her Waffle House smoking a cigarette, just around the corner from the front door, staring directly at us from across the road. We ran the last few steps to the car, piled in, and literally peeled out of the parking lot and up the road back to the interstate. She glared at us until we were out of sight.

ShataraBankhead

I'm from Bham too. If you are taking a road trip, and can't decide where to eat, there are plenty of opportunities for Waffle House. You really can't go wrong. We have eaten at many down here in the southeast. Always good.

Squeakygear

The waffleception

savageronald

85S of Atlanta here - same - one on each side

wophi

That is about the case for almost every interstate exit around Atlanta. I had a 5 mile trip home off 85 in Gwinnett, and passed 6 waffle houses.

pistoncivic

must be a lot of Belgians in Atlanta

wophi

More for the smothered, covered, chunked...

idog99

Dude... I ain't doing no U-turn for waffles!

ArchieBellTitanUp

I’ll do one for those hash browns tho

Goldfingr

I guess it shouldn't be surprising that you live in a waffle house considering there are so many where you are from.

hoppinrob

My house is actually made waffles 🧇

spermdonor

Gonna suck when it rains

hoppinrob

It only rains aunt Jemima over my house

spermdonor

Macon. I drank the water and left, it keeps calling me back.

hoppinrob

I know what you mean that's where I'm from

NPC3

I worked there for awhile, I miss it dearly. I still get occasional texts from friends back there. Good to know I have folks in Georgia that care a little about me.

guachi01

You live in Georgia? Because that's about the most Georgia thing I've ever read. I lived in GA for 13 years and Waffle Houses are everywhere.

AgentCC

The day Nevada gets a Waffle House, it’ll have to be sanctioned by the Nevada Athletic Committee just like boxing or MMA.

[deleted]

Cool in the daytime, but after 10pm, it’s a free-for-all. ANYTHING can happen!

gotdamnlochness

This is why Waffle House is best after midnight, double points after midnight on a weeknight.

gotdamnlochness

I’m right there with you!

FlameSkimmerLT

What, that’s when Florida Man shows up or something? Enlighten the uninitiated.

thekingoflapland

Waffle House after midnight is the stuff of legend. I once saw a man in full view of the rest of the staff and guests shoot up heroin and fall asleep in a booth. In the same Waffle House I saw a cook and a guest get in a fight, and the guest thought that the cook would not come after him with a spatula. Dear God, was he wrong. And my stories are relatively tame. I know people who dropped acid and then met a furry at a waffle House and lost their shit, because this was in the early 2000s, and nobody knew what that was then. Waffle House is where Florida man works.

FatBoyStew

For the uninitiated -- Do NOT, I can't repeat this enough, DO NOT and I mean **DO NOT** fuck with the Waffle House employees especially late night and early morning. They will come across that counter and bitch slap you without hesitation and they'll be rewarded for doing so.

FlameSkimmerLT

Brilliant explanation and composition. Thanks cuz.

Typing_real_slow

I've seen a fight at waffle house with three cops sitting at the front counter watching it like they were at the MGM Grand. Shits bizzaro land. I love it.

The Waffle Houses that are full at 3 am are both wonderful and frightening.

Late night Waffle House run with friends is the fucking best

beebewp

Waffle House is the place to go when you know it’s time to stop drinking, but you don’t want to go home yet. My best nights out always ended at Waffle House!

SamIamGreenEggsNoHam

I just wish they would expand northward.

mathwiz617

Instructions unclear, 30 more Waffle House locations open in northern GA.

tigrenus

I bet those 2 New Mexico ones get spoooky

Thrill_Of_It

I just moved to the south pretty recently, they way everyone talks about waffle house, I'm actually scared to go lol

tigrenus

Nah, I mean, you might see some shit, but that's any 24h place, I think. Tip 'em well and enjoy!

tuckernuts

Been to plenty of waffle houses at the more sketchy times of night, while myself being less than sober. Its mostly just a quiet place to relax and eat after a busy night partying. You get the usual fair of people who are hungry at 230am, which has the potential to get lively like every other place at 230am. The hash browns are divine.

PleX

This is not a joke. We would all take our security shirts off or turn them inside out before going in after work because it was a fucking guarantee that we would be fighting drunks that night if we didn't. The second one of us forgot to do so, it's an instant "SCURITY!!!!!" (the misspelling is on purpose) as soon as we walked through the door and it never ended well.

Opus-the-Penguin

Wow! I have been to 25 percent of the Waffle Houses in Kansas.

gotdamnlochness

Holy guacamole!

Opus-the-Penguin

I've also been to #DIV/0! error percent of the Waffle Houses in California.

_The_Great_Autismo_

You've been to 100% of them. You've been to zero and there are zero.

HolycommentMattman

But 100% of 0 is 0. 0 + 0 is 0. So 100% + 100% is 0. So 200% is 0. And 300% is 0. 1000000% is 0. And now you might understand why what you describe is #DIV/0!.

Opus-the-Penguin

Nicely put. I was going to approach it from the other direction and point out that half of zero is zero, so I've also been to 50 percent of them. But I think your way is cleaner. Either way, though, the error's gonna get you!

Opus-the-Penguin

Similar here. The one in Shawnee is just across a parking lot from the grocery store I usually shop at.

QuotidianQuell

I'm surprised to see only four. I've apparently been to half of them...

[deleted]

Growing up in Georgia, I swear to god this number is way under. I've been to at least 2 dozen different ones myself. It's an establishment. Cheap, 24 hour, shitty food that anyone, even teenagers who just got a car can still afford! (literally fill meals for 3 or 4 dollars). It's predictable, perfect for road trips, etc. Which means it shows up in rich and poor neighborhoods alike. It's just a good model. And importantly, they hire fresh-out felons, which is one of the only places that's forward facing / service oriented that will. And that's way way WAY more valuable for society than you can imagine.

clshifter

From what I hear they're pretty good to their employees, too. The one near me has people that have been working there for more than a decade.

DanMarinoTambourineo

Yea they do. They were always at our career fair (graduate with a hospitality management degree in SC). Hired recent college grads to management positions with great benefits, after 2-3 years promote to regional management. Biggest drawback is everyone in the company (including ceo) is on a 6 2 rotating schedule and no vacation days on holidays since those are some of the busiest days. (6 days on 2 days off) so your days off rotate every week. It’s hard to have a normal life.

Deflagratio1

I once interviewed to be a manager. It's a guaranteed 50 hours of work a week. And you are the head cook. The starting salary was $40k but depending on sales it wasn't hard to double that and some of the managers in my area were making over $100k (they showed me the pay reports). You'll work your ass off but you can make a decent amount of change.

radiomix

I have to agree with you. Being from Georgia this number seems way too low. There have to be 400+ just in the metro Atlanta area alone. I'm from a small town and we have two. And I can't tell you how many times I've seen one on each side of the Interstate.

CivilRuin4111

Thing is, FOR WHAT IT IS, it isn’t really all that shitty compared to similar alternatives (looking at you IHOP and Denny’s). With the understanding that diner fare in general is inherently unhealthy, at least at WaHo you’re getting food cooked to order for a few bucks. Service is usually decent, and they’ll bend over backward to accommodate whatever random shit you want mixed in to your waffle and hash browns.

thinkB4WeSpeak

This is why Georgia is winning the championship

Ngoscope

That is where Waffle House was founded and where they are headquarters are.

Lucas_Steinwalker

I’ve seen people write *they’re* instead of *their* before but I’ve never seen them expand the contraction to *they are*. Impressive.

Bonerbailey

That’s why Georgia beat TCU…

schmetterlingonberry

That's a fucking understatement. They committed **the** worst beat down in bowl history.

Ghostflop

Remember folks, if a Waffle House near you has to close due to weather conditions GTFO

gotdamnlochness

Yes! The Waffle House Index!

Ghostflop

I remember once when everything else in town was closed due to a snowstorm (beach town in NC), but the Waffle House was somehow still open and insanely busy. If they are closed it’s either earthquake, volcano eruption, or meteor and even then I say they still say open through those all at once.

500SL

Waffle House waffles are round. Just saying.

SzmFTW

I’m so happy and angry Iowa has zero. Happy because I won’t gain 100 pounds. Angry because I’d probably really enjoy it.

ReturnOfFrank

Yeah but y'all've got taco pizza in your gas stations and the South hasn't figured that out yet.

Zebracorn42

I’m surprised Iowa doesn’t have any. I think my go to when driving to and from Iowa was Steak and Shake and Culver’s.

MonstahButtonz

No love in the north sadly. All we have is IHOP and friggin' Dennys. Weak.

DocFossil

Denny’s is Waffle House for people who can’t fight

SquadPoopy

One of the great truths of the world: You don't go to a Denny's. You end up at a Denny's.

walksalot_talksalot

Fun fact: Marilyn Manson punched someone at the Denny's in Lethbridge AB, Canada. I'm pretty sure it happened after midnight. I'll be right back up with the source. gotdamnlochness

Weak for sure. We have IHOP and Dennys here as well (Georgia, the Waffle House capital) and neither comes close to Waffle House.

TikTrd

No Perkins? You're *really* missing out

gotdamnlochness

Not familiar with Perkins!

TikTrd

High class waffle house with an amazing bakery. Also usually open 24 hours

gotdamnlochness

Sounds interesting!

TikTrd

I recommend going in June if you ever can. Their strawberry pie is ***to die for!!!***

fukitol-

I've been to Perkins a bunch. I wish I'd gone to Waffle House every time.

notattention

I’ll never forgive the powers that be that decided Waffle House will never come to Michigan. My mom asked about 20 years ago and basically said it’ll never happen / not possible.

dw796341

At least the northeast has actually good diners that aren't chains

StarkRavingNormal

You know what can be even better than a waffle house? The greasy spoon that took over an old waffle house location. Because if you can succeed where a waho failed, you are something special.

gotdamnlochness

I’ve never seen such a thing. Around here Waffle Houses closing isn’t really a thing that happens often. I actually only know of one Waffle House that closed down and it’s a vape shop now.

StarkRavingNormal

To be fair it could be hard to tell the deference between an old Huddle House and an old Waffle House

gotdamnlochness

Now Huddle House? They deserve to close down. 🤢

Hotasflames

Huddle house is a goddamn disgrace to this planet. It's like how can you possibly try and compete with Waffle House? It's just gonna end up shitty because...it's.not.a.waffle.house.

Unicorn Waffle houses don't close.

We used to have two that were less than 1/4 mile apart, one on either side of I-10, and one eventually closed. It definitely had the shittier service of the two. I think it's a cannabis dispensary now...

JustaRandomOldGuy

Waffle House is used to measure storm severity: Cat 1: Winds 70 -110 MPH Cat 2: Winds 111 - 150 MPH Cat 3: Winds 151 - 999 MPH Cat 4: Waffle House closes

jmcstar

Waffle houses are stargates to Florida.

[deleted]

Nah don't be giving GAs thing to FL. F that

SirTiffAlot

The Waffle House franchise rules are pretty interesting fwiw. I'm so glad this exists. Waffle House is peak America

gotdamnlochness

The “Waffle House Index” is also really neat. And there’s also a Waffle House university!

savageronald

There’s a Waffle House museum in Decatur / Avondale Estates too. Haven’t been inside tho (have friends that live nearby so have passed it a lot)

gotdamnlochness

I’ve never been either. Might aim to do that next time I’m in the area.

-Tom-

Waffle House is peak "The South"

RugerRedhawk

What is interesting about the franchise rules?

SirTiffAlot

You can't just open a WH. You have to already own one or go be an employee for 4(?) years. You are also expected to actively participate in the running of your store, ie on call 24/7 because WH doesn't close. It's also extremely expensive. A friend and I wanted to open a WH bc there isn't one near us so we looked it up. There is some other stuff on their site about training programs and the way they do stock options since they aren't a publicly traded company.

[deleted]

No Waffle House in my State. Its peaceful here at night.

TheDollarstoreDoctor

No Waffle House in my state, certainly is not peaceful at night here. A waffle house is needed so those who want to throw hands & start shit at 2 AM have a place to go.

bvhp415

California feels pointed out

xanvians

We got Roscoes for that

Paurwarr

We got Chuckie Cheese for the day and Dennys or the corner store for night.

FuzzyJellyfishFish

Damn, I’m so sorry

BiggieJohnATX

I have never feared for my life more then eating at the Austin Airport location, I have never been to a Waffle House since, and never will again. huge fight broke out, I was covered in food, bleeding from a broken plate thrown at me, I tried to leave thru the emergency exit and was almost shot by a cop in the parking lot.

[deleted]

What was the fight about?

BiggieJohnATX

guy came in, sat down at the counter, ordered something, and a few minutes later went absolute apeshit, jumped over the counter, tried to strangle the waitress, other people that were there before I walked in joined in attacking the waitress and cook . . .I really couldnt figure out what was going on, I tried to move towards the rear fire exit, but they kept throwing things at me off the grill and back counter. when I made it outside, I was held at gunpoint by a cop, ordered to the ground and handcuffed , face down in a puddle in 40 F weather for over an hour, bleeding from both arms, I still have scars on my arms. After they cleared the restaurant, they let me go, never asked for ID (I didnt realize until later they had taken my wallet), told to expect a call from a detective. I was called the next morning and ordered to appear for questioning, they clearly had my ID, with address, but seemed confused when I told them it would take me an hour or so to get there ( I live at the opposite corner of the metro area) Police claimed "I matched the description of the person that 911 calls said started the fight . . . .(security video, and 911 calls my lawyer got copies of clearly said it was a tall, thin, latino male) .I was 5'10", about #250 at the time,no way in hell they mistook me for the person described, didnt help that owners of the waffle house location filed criminal trespass charges against everyone named in the police report . . . so I had to sue them too . . . ( I lost my job because they filed charges) I had already called a lawyer before the police interviewed me and filed a excessive use of force complaint against the police, they were really pissed when I showed up with a lawyer to give a statement. I eventually (2 years later) got all charges dropped and a formal apology from Waffle House, but I had been fired from my job because I had a criminal trespass charges (high security, any violation is instant termination, lost my security license)

SunnyAlwaysDaze

That's super fucked up and holy shit. Are you able to sue them for like lost wages and stuff?

TvIsSoma

My first thought when I read your first story was that there’s no way my Waffle House experience could be that bad to where I’d never go to one again but after reading this holy shit dude that’s an absolute nightmare!

MAYH3M78

Everyone’s first time is rough

vikingcock

The lack of them our west is devastating. It's not a waffle house for me, it's a waffle home.

gotdamnlochness

Good question. What do they do without the Waffle House Index?

UndeadBread

California's usually on fire, so we always just assume one is happening.

shiftyasluck

In the northeast US, if the greek diner isnt slinging Heineken and four day old whitefish, there is something going down.

AceUnderTheHole

squirrelmonkie

Man I thought there were a lot of waffle houses in my state, SC. Looking at GA I'm like ddaaaammmnnnnn

LifeLiterate

Now someone make this same map but with the number of police reports from a Waffle House, per state, lol.

DAVENP0RT

Atlanta alone would drown out everywhere else, including the rest of Georgia. There's a reason why cops are usually camping outside of Waffle Houses here.

CarbyMcBagel

Waffle house is delicious. Gimme them hash browns with onions and cheese, extra crispy if you can plzkthx. I used to live in a city where you could stand in the parking lot of one WH and look across the street to another WH. One was known as the "nice" WH, the the other one was where people got shot.

Jetfuelmakesmewet

I think you meant to say scattered, smothered, and covered hashbrowns….

gotdamnlochness

Yes. Every major city here has these two Waffle Houses.

intensive-porpoise

There is a 25 hour waffle house down the street from me in PDX, ORE. I'm pretty sure the Sopanos writers have been there and the old owner was the inspiration for "Johnny Cakes." As others have noted it really doesn't get real until 10pm-3am.

[deleted]

WH started in DeKalb County. Thats in Atlanta. The original store was sold an became a used car lot on E. College Ave. Last time on was there, it was shutdown and boarded up. So they opened a new WH #1000 in recognition of the first store a few blocks over. I just googled it and there seems to be a Historical Landmark for it now. They bought the old building and turned it into a museum. How about that. The color of the ceilings were careful selected to hide cigarette smoke back when smoking indoors was allowed. My Buddy's dad used to be "the guy" that builds Waffle Houses across the country. He told me about the paint. Ive been to over 200 different Waffle Houses across the country. I used to spend my free time at one when I was in college. I was there so much, they used to let me cook my own food and show up to the employee meetings. I happen to be there in GA in 2005 when Kid Rock got his ass beat at the Waffle House across the street from the Mall of Georgia. My friend worked there that night. I showed up just before the cops got there. Dude was yelling. Didnt know who it was and frankly didnt care at the time. There is one exit in Georgia that you could be at one WH and physically see 2 other WH's from the inside. Ive seen countless crazy things go down at a WH... From bounty hunters tackling a woman behind the counter, to gang fight with 60+ people and chainsaws... Shootings, car wrecks, cops smoking weed, marriage proposals, etc. I love WH.

ClF3ismyspiritanimal

While I would ordinarily say /r/FuckOhio, I am quite annoyed that Michigan has no Waffle Houses at all and Ohio has plenty of them. I demand that this gross imbalance in the universe be rectified at once.

Nygmus

Y'all have legal weed and we have the waffle houses? That's some Gift of the Magi shit right there.

AirWick519

My go-to post debauchery after-hour meal! Too bad there’s not one closer to me in the DMV area.

huh_phd

I'm in New England, and I've heard a lot about waffle house. Can some kind soul explain to me the joy that I'm missing out on? I heart waffles

gotdamnlochness

It’s a notoriously greasy, but delightful 24 hour restaurant that specializes in breakfast foods and famous for their pecan waffles. All the food is cooked right in front of you, generally by someone with no teeth, but it’s delicious every time.

MaritMonkey

As far as I am concerned [this](https://youtu.be/bct8stbZafI), while it doesn't actually tell you a whole lot about the food, is the definitive review of Waffle House.

T-Saxon242

Pecan Waffle with black coffee. GA staple.

JMD0615

It makes me sad that there are no waffle houses in New Jersey. I went to florida for vacation, and ate at a Waffle House. It was really good!

BigVGK93

I recently lost my waffle house virginity, and I have to say the waffle was fucking good

ACorania

Pretty sure the one on Central in Albuquerque closed, leaving only one in NM.

[deleted]

Before I die

[deleted]

Fun fact.. They judge how bad a hurricane was by if the Waffle Houses are still open or not..

Mekroval

As someone living in Michigan, this chart slightly bothers me. Why does Ohio get so many, but we have none?

Puppy_of_Doom

I would frequent this amazing place very often. At least twice a week. Then my ass had to move to where there's none...

TankouShoku

Ahh Waffle House. There’s one by my university’s campus. This means if you go in around midnight, it’s a healthy mix of tired grad students, drunk 18 year olds, and homeless crack addicts. There’s nothing quite like it.
