Cosmic Crisp is superior IMHO; they're not as sweet as honeycrisp, but they're also far less acidic, and much easier on my stomach. Just sweet enough, not too acidic, and a nice crunch and snap when you bite.
Came here to say this! Honeycrisp used to rank way up on my list. They have fallen way back from how they used to taste. Now it’s Cosmic Crisp for the all-around win!
They've got the apples (cosmic crisp), they've got the cheese (cougar gold), now they just need to develop some wicked crackers and salami to make the perfect WaSU charcuterie board
Yeah they’ve been available in the PNW since 2019. But outside of WA and OR in chain grocery stores was basically last year.
The first large scale plantings were in 2017.
This guide is probably 5+ years old - it’s common to dig up stuff that is relatively low in rankings and post it to get karma.
The Honeycrisp was invented at the University of Minnesota and until the patent expired in early 2000s, would generate millions of revenue a year for the school.
I love it, always in grocery stores around the twin cities. It’s still the most expensive Apple per pound, but easily worth it. It makes all others taste bland in comparison
Big Honeycrisp is out early working the narrative. Just slide the data in the middle suggesting they are perfect. Make people abandon their position on other apples so the narrative drivers can buy up those apple stocks at a lower price. That company has problems though I telling you, but it's backers want a monopoly. Apple stock theory is so hard for the regular guy to grasp.
I fucking love Pink Lady. It's my absolute favorite apple. It has the perfect mix of sweet and tart. This chart is so stupid since it's all up to personal taste, with a few exceptions like Red Delicious objectively being disgusting (mostly a joke, in case the one Red Delicious fan comes after me for my misuse of "objective")
Same here. Macs were cheap and we lived very close to Meaford which had tons of Mac orchards so my parents bought them by the bushel. I can't and won't eat a Mac fresh anymore.
Lived in the Hudson valley area of NY most of my life and now in SC for roughly 6 years. I am appalled at this chart. It is very clearly made with the tastebuds and culture style of Southerns. Now don't get me wrong, the south can cook, and most of this is pretty accurate. But McIntosh apples are my absolute favorite and they deserve their thumbs up.
The biggest indication this chart is garbage is that red delicious has a thumbs up for eaten fresh. They're pithy and gross, bland and chalky, like eating a crayon that's past its expiration date.
It's a garbage fruit, all fruits suffer for being categorized in the same group. The only way they keep doctors away is if they're thrown.
They've got a nice shape and color though
I read somewhere on Reddit that Red Delicious apples were the victim of an apple arms race where the goal was beautiful looking apples. I guess it worked because I see them everywhere. Too bad they sacrificed the taste.
I once had an amazing Red Delicious. But it was at Colonial Williamsburg. I wonder if they had their own orchard with apples older than the apple arms race.
THATS WHAT IM TALKIN BOUT VATO!
These muchachos dont know the true value of apple life homes.
pink lady, honey crisp. thats the real shit dawg.
apple vatos locos for life homes!
see, some people seem to prefer mushy apples, but I like when I can barely grip the apple flesh with my teeth and tear off a huge chunk because of how crispy it is. I could never do that with some apples, but a pink lady is like that almost every time. also the sound it makes when the piece separates from the apple is heavenly.
There is this new Apple type called Rockit apples. I am not much of an Apple person either but I found the main reason is because I get tired of eating an apple before I finish the apple so it just ends up with me throwing away food. Rockit apples are much smaller and I like those more because it just feels like the right amount of apple. As far as taste go they are pretty above average but nothing to write home about.
The fact they had the nerve to put Granny Smith on the same tier for eating fresh as Red Delicious just tells you the person who made this doesn't know shit about apples.
The history of the red delicious is pretty interesting actually. Once upon a time it used to be considered delicious. Exceedingly so, in fact.
However, the growers were more interested in the bright red appearance of the apple and selectively bred it to be a perfect *looking* apple with superior shelf life.
Generations later and we are left with a bland, sandy, but beautiful bright red apple. It's cheap to grow and people keep on buying them, but nobody seems to actually like them anymore.
Oh, that explains it. I've tasted some of them that were actually impressively good, even compared to other apples, but only in a few ocassion, +95% of them are absolute trash. I thought supermarkets just froze them or something that made them lose their flavour and texture.
*Red delicious should*
*Be thumbs down for everything.*
*Terrible apple*

Red delicious only survive today because they pack and ship long distances better than any other apple. They are hearty, have thick skin and don’t show blemishes so that’s what grocery stores buy. It’s a true travesty.
Which ironically is why they're awful. They used to be delicious, but after sellers complained about them not lasting and shipping poorly they were bread into the disgusting wet bags of sand they are today. The only thing they kept was the name.
Thankfully there are new apple cultivars gaining traction like Cosmic Crisp that taste wonderful and supposedly transport just as good if not better than red delicious.
Truly an awful apple. Surprisingly, the only way I've ever enjoyed one was baked, which is something it says it's not good for.
Of course, mine was baked in brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon, so you could barely taste the apple, but I imagine that's similar to how any of the other varieties are being baked as well.
I also think McIntoshes taste fine right off the tree. Wouldn't be my first choice, but it's not like they're disgusting.
Twice, I have had lunch parties where I put on a blind taste test of 20+ apple varieties. I'm hand-picking two each of the best apples out of the lot, including Red Delicious, but I pick a couple extra of those so I can kind of cheat and guarantee that they're the best specimens I can reasonably get.
They invariably wind up at the bottom of the list with the likes of Romes and Granny Smiths. Like an excellent one can be a pretty decent apple, but the competition is insane. Where are the Cameos? Kikus? Pacific Roses? Opals? Cosmic Crisps? Pazazz? Envy? Kanzi? Lady Alice? Sugarbee? Smitten? I'm sure there are others, but these are generally the winners in these competitions.
They also spelled Ambrosia wrong... list is weird.
BS list. Cosmic Crisp are the absolute most amazingly perfect apple ever created. They are the pinnacle of apples and aren't on this list. This list is void.

ever since 4th grade and my teacher giving us a apple assignment, ive been obsessed with apples and their flavors.
honey crisp, granny smith, pink lady are like top tier in my book.
ANYTHING with the texture of a red delicious is horrible. i hate it when i grab a fuji or gala and it has been sitting there a while. It has good flavor but that texture is blah.
My local grocery stores dont have that much of a variety but i wanna try more of these types.
I grew up on an apple orchard, this chart is trash. McIntosh is delicious fresh and should never be used for baking unless you want an applesauce pie. It cooks down faster and better than almost any other apple, which is why we use it for applesauce. Red delicious was at one time a good apple, but over the years it’s been selectively bred for appearance and it has lost all of the qualities that made it good for food.
Mealy red delicious apples not good for sauce? I'd go with down for eaten fresh or salad, and sauce or pie up, but not dumplings or anything where the apple needs to hold its shape. Seriously, they suck raw.
It took me too long to find this comment. The Sweet Tango was cultivated by the same people who made the Honeycrisp because they were upset about Honeycrisps being grown in regions unsuitable for the apple and creating poor quality apples that damaged the cultivar's reputation. The Sweet Tango has a more exclusive licensing agreement, and they can better ensure quality.
I've had Cosmic Crisps and Honeycrisps, and the Sweet Tango is the superior apple IMO.
Big ups to Honeycrisp!
Cosmic Crisp!
Cosmic crisp is amazing! Like honey crisp but more consistent (avoids the random bland honey crisp you get sometimes) and frickin huge.
Cosmic Crisp is superior IMHO; they're not as sweet as honeycrisp, but they're also far less acidic, and much easier on my stomach. Just sweet enough, not too acidic, and a nice crunch and snap when you bite.
I’ve got a great podcast to share with you
A true regulation podcast at that!
I clicked this thread just to see how long it took for a f**kface reference and I'm not leaving disappointed.
Ah, I have found my people exactly where I’d expect them for a fruit but now vegetable podcast
The SweetTango is the best apple on that list. I prefer it to both Honeycrisp and Cosmic Crisp.
Came here to say this! Honeycrisp used to rank way up on my list. They have fallen way back from how they used to taste. Now it’s Cosmic Crisp for the all-around win!
Cosmic Crisp is pretty damn good
I’ve had some absolutely monstrous honey crisps, but I live in Washington so we might get more of them lol
Way to go Washington State University
Go Cougs!
They've got the apples (cosmic crisp), they've got the cheese (cougar gold), now they just need to develop some wicked crackers and salami to make the perfect WaSU charcuterie board
Why is it not on the list?!
They’ve just now started to bear fruit at a commercial level. The guide is probably several years old.
I’ve been buying Cosmic Crisps for years
Yeah they’ve been available in the PNW since 2019. But outside of WA and OR in chain grocery stores was basically last year. The first large scale plantings were in 2017. This guide is probably 5+ years old - it’s common to dig up stuff that is relatively low in rankings and post it to get karma.
There's literally thousands of apple cultivars! This list seems to be only of the most popular ones.
EAT THAT DAMN PENCIL ANDREW.
The Honeycrisp was invented at the University of Minnesota and until the patent expired in early 2000s, would generate millions of revenue a year for the school.

til im a huge goldy gopher fan
The University of Minnesota knocked that one out of the park. Perfect apple.
I love it, always in grocery stores around the twin cities. It’s still the most expensive Apple per pound, but easily worth it. It makes all others taste bland in comparison
My toddler will only eat honey crisps and it’s awful because we’re spending like 40 dollars a week on apples alone!
>I identify with the toddler. .
It’s very good. Undeniably so. It’s also the Doritos of apples.
I am but a humble bird law specialist and will not try to understand the elusive trickery of apple stocks.
Honey crisp is the goat imo.
you should try a pink lady. very similar but the flavor is much more tart.
I fucking love Pink Lady. It's my absolute favorite apple. It has the perfect mix of sweet and tart. This chart is so stupid since it's all up to personal taste, with a few exceptions like Red Delicious objectively being disgusting (mostly a joke, in case the one Red Delicious fan comes after me for my misuse of "objective")
here in brazil we produce most types of fruits but we only have fuji and gala in supermarkets. lame
I’ve always eaten McIntosh fresh because they’re soft on my teeth.
I love McIntosh fresh as well. No idea why it would get a thumbs down.
Coming from New England this chart is blasphemous. Love me some McIntosh apples.
Yep, I’m a Vermonter. The orchard near us has 2 dogs named Mac and Tosh. We’ll all go to the death defending that apple.
Canadian. Grew up getting Mac apples from the Beaver kids on apple days. Mac's are the absolute best.
As a beaver kid who grew into a cub, I ate so many of those that I grew to loathe them. Big ups to you for supporting your local beavers though!
Same here. Macs were cheap and we lived very close to Meaford which had tons of Mac orchards so my parents bought them by the bushel. I can't and won't eat a Mac fresh anymore.
This chart looks like it is biased to the south. Honey crisp deserve their crown though
The second I saw this chart, I said to myself “the person who made this has never had a fresh Vermont Mac”
McIntosh supremacy!
Bred specifically for the supermarket; shelf life, appearance, uniformity. Not for flavor
I once had an amazing Red Delicious. But it was at Colonial Williamsburg. I wonder if they had their own orchard with apples older than the apple arms race.
So true, you'd be better off eating crab apples.
Or a bag if meal worms
And courtland only getting 1 for baking? My mom’s multiple award winning apple pie was alway courtlands
[удалено]
Should be 3 thumbs down across the board.
A good red delicious apple is very good eating. Unfortunately, a good red delicious apple is also very rare to find.
It's tasty at first but eventually you reach the memory unit and motherboard, and they're a bit chewy.
Op wants a clean crisp crunch.
This is the way. outta here with your red delicious texture self. Tart and crispy crunch gang gang bruh! 4 lyfe!
Red delicious should be thumbs down across the board. 👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼
Why are McIntosh so hard to find? 20-30 years ago they were common in season even at supermarkets, and almost always at the farmer's market.
That's how Apples work, they always try to sell you on the new model when a 10 year old apple would work just as well.
Got a chuckle because I hate eating soft apples. Crispier and crunchier the better, for me.
THATS WHAT IM TALKIN BOUT VATO! These muchachos dont know the true value of apple life homes. pink lady, honey crisp. thats the real shit dawg. apple vatos locos for life homes!
🤝 Biting into a Cosmic Crisp makes the world alright, even if for a moment.
I only just discovered those this year and they’re amazing.
No Apple is better than a fresh McIntosh
McIntosh are my favorite. This list is wrong
Whoever made this chart is not welcome in Vermont.
They get a thumbs down, but red delicious gets a thumbs up? Huh.
I literally came to this comment section to blast eating well on how McIntosh is 1. The best apple 2. Perfect when fresh. These hacks know nothing!
McIntosh is the best apple, softness, such a tastey sweetness, not waxy, easy to eat. Perfect in every way. This chart lost all credibility
My favorite apple fresh. This chart is trippin
My middle name is McIntosh (moms maiden name). So as you can imagine I love all things ‘tosh!
this chart is bullshit. virtually everything is green to begin with except for a handful of blue probably just based on OPs personal preference
Same! Love a McIntosh!
The above phrase alone should be grounds for power of attorney activation.
They're best right off the tree.
Yeah I just love them. My favorite apple and what I think of when I think “Apple”
I'm vandalized by the idea of any apple getting thumbs down for fresh eating. It's an apple!
Pink Lady squad
This chart is wrong. Pink lady should be 3 thumbs up for "eaten fresh."
this failure undermines the whole chart tbh
Putting Pink Lady on the same level as Red "Delicious" is a crime
Putting it below Jonagold which is honestly the worst apple I've ever eaten (apart from his sibling Jonagored) is just ridiculous.
Directly from the fridge, 4 stars
Yeah its the only one i care for as is to eat. Crisp texture thin smooth skin etc. Only downside is when a piece of skin lodges inbetween my teeth lol
Pink Lady gang rise up
see, some people seem to prefer mushy apples, but I like when I can barely grip the apple flesh with my teeth and tear off a huge chunk because of how crispy it is. I could never do that with some apples, but a pink lady is like that almost every time. also the sound it makes when the piece separates from the apple is heavenly.
O Captain, my Captain!
Where my cosmic crisp gang at?
Pro tip leave your cosmic crisp in the fridge for 3 months and then you can experience the hemispheres of flavour
You know, I'm just not an apple guy? I don't know what it is, I was just never that much into them. Do you think this is better for a non apple guy?
There is this new Apple type called Rockit apples. I am not much of an Apple person either but I found the main reason is because I get tired of eating an apple before I finish the apple so it just ends up with me throwing away food. Preach!
Those apples are crazy good
Honestly a game changer. Only found out about them through a podcast haha
Crazy coz it was a baseball podcast
Legit the only apple so will buy anymore. So much flavor!!
Who's not eating Granny Smiths fresh? Four thumbs up for me. Nice plate of Granny Smith slices. Yum.
My pick for everything. Mouth watering just thinking about fresh Grannys.
Phrasing, oh lord
We’re in an **extremely** narrow context here. But I should know by now that there is no safe space.
What? I love my Grannys wet, watery, and dripping with a sour tang!
Gooshing Green Granny's
So we *are* back to doing Phrasing, now? Cuz nobody ever tells me.
Granny Smith is the best type of apple and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise
Agreed
Granny Smith apple + peanut butter = god-tier snack
Try GS + Mozerella cheese. You’re welcome
a sharp ched does the trick too
Fresh mozzarella or are we talking heated up melting? I’ve never heard of this before but I’m interested.
*sweet mother of god* that sounds absolutely fantastic. Trying this later, thanks in advance!!
This was the snack my grandma always made me when I spent the night there. Just perfect.
With lemon juice and salt. Childhood favorite.
I would never have considered putting lemon juice on the tartest apple.
It is so delicious!
The fact they had the nerve to put Granny Smith on the same tier for eating fresh as Red Delicious just tells you the person who made this doesn't know shit about apples.
Exactly
Also in salads. Slather them grannies in yogurt and honey with some broccoli!
Exactly
Truth!
Granny Smith deserves double thumbs up in all categories. Best apple in all respects.
Sponsored by Honeycrisp Growers Association.
Big, honey crisp is at it again
McIntosh being a thumbs down eaten fresh while red delicious is a thumbs up? Lmao insanely wrong. Immediate disregard of chart
Red delicious should be thumbs down for everything. Terrible apple
Imagine being so insecure about how your apple tastes that you have to put Delicious in the name.
Any man who must say “I am the king,” is no king.

I believe it, but even if the apple originally was delicious, I still find it odd they put Delicious in the name.
Critique the name all you want, but it sold gangbusters compared to other apples of the time, such as the Brown Disgusting and the Bland Soggybottom.
As opposed to granny smith or northern spy?
Who decided an apple should be shaped like a tooth :/
Oh, that explains it. I've tasted some of them that were actually impressively good, even compared to other apples, but only in a few ocassion, +95% of them are absolute trash. I thought supermarkets just froze them or something that made them lose their flavour and texture.
30+ years ago I ate one that actually was delicious. Since then, nope.

mealy garbage with a plastic shell
Thankfully there are new apple cultivars gaining traction like Cosmic Crisp that taste wonderful and supposedly transport just as good if not better than red delicious.
Red delicious? More like somehow worse than eating leather!

There’s a reason red delicious was used as the poisoned apple in Sleeping Beauty
Do you mean Snow White?
Red delicious needs to be two thumbs down across every single category
ever since 4th grade and my teacher giving us a apple assignment, ive been obsessed with apples and their flavors. honey crisp, granny smith, pink lady are like top tier in my book. Shoutout to honeycrisp for being the perfect apple
Braeburn have always ha the perfect ratio of sweet and spur for me, I love those guys
Mealy red delicious apples not good for sauce? I'd go with down for eaten fresh or salad, and sauce or pie up, but not dumplings or anything where the apple needs to hold its shape. Seriously, they suck raw.
McIntosh fresh eaters gang rise up ✊🏼
Last thing I ate before getting braces. Then discovered they were small and soft enough I could eat them even with braces without cutting.
SweeTango is relatively new. But it's the best ever for eating fresh if you like a crisp apple with a great sweet/sour balance.
SweeTango are so good!
Needs to be updated for the Cosmic Crisp. The latest apple in apple technology.
Cosmic Crisp is the superior apple
How are you not gonna have red envy?
Came here for this. I’m at the point where if the store doesn’t have Envy, I’m not buying apples.
Where the fuck are the snapdragons
I absolutely love the fact how granny Smith is just *the* green apple
this seems to be a Big Honeycrisp psyop
Granny Smith and Pink Lady only get a single thumbs-up for eating fresh?! What the hell is wrong with these people?
Jazz/SciFresh — the one and only 🤤
Wtf. A fresh off the tree McIntosh is one life's best simple pleasures.
Literally going apple picking next week and going straight for the Mcintosh
I find joy in reading a good book.
So basically whatever you do, it's highly likely to be fine
Today, I learned that by being poor, I was forced to eat and make my opinion on apples on the literal worst apple available.
Fuji and Gala FTW
Put Coxes on here. 2 thumbs up for everything.
Ambrosia is the best apple
Yes. People are missing out with their basic bitch apples. Soooo superior!
Pointless guide. All the information on apples you could ever need already exists. https://applerankings.com
I don't trust this right off the bat because it says red delicious are good to be eaten fresh and everyone knows they're fuckin gross fresh.
It’s almost as if red delicious are garbage apples (which is true).
Red delicious used to be my fave in the 90s before it got un delicioused
Honey crisp is best apple
The best apple I have ever eaten was a pink Lady. Cold, crisp, sweet, perfect amount of tartness. It was perfect!
The person who made this must rly love honey crisps
No Envy?... I only buy Fuji, gala, honey crisp and envy.
Pink lady should be three thumbs up for everything and the rest of the apples shouldn’t exist. Pink lady is the god-tier apple.
