Yeah I was just wondering….is this at a certain time of night, or something? I was under the impression that all stars rotated around the North Star every night.
Pretty sure this is approximately at midnight on the solstices and equinoxes.
The constellation is always moving around the North Star, but because we’re moving around the sun, the apparent direction of the constellation changes because nighttime has shifted to a different part of the sky, if that makes sense
Not to mention, the Big Dipper doesn't really rise like this for a good portion of the Southern hemisphere, and the North Star doesn't come up at all once you go south of the equator. You might see the Big Dipper (or part of it) at certain times of the year, but it's not up all night like in this image, the way it is for the Northern hemisphere.
It's not accidental because this comes from an old article making the case that the symbol was likely used by Native Americans after being directly inspired by this perception of the stars.
What you have to understand about the swastika is that it is *ancient*. It's one of the oldest symbols humans have ever made, and it's damn near universal. Cultures separated by thousands of miles who had virtually no contact have put it on temples and clay jugs and books.
It was everywhere, and it was seen as a good luck charm. The Girl Scouts' magazine was called "The Swastika".
It's like the Smiley Face. It's everywhere, it's a symbol everyone recognizes, it's ubiquitous. The Nazis used it as a way to make them seem cool and kinda hokey.
"Look guys, we have this universal symbol of goodness and humanity as our symbol - how bad could we be?"
It'd be like someone using a heart emoji for a death cult. Or a smiley face. Or, like... a triangle. It fucking sucks, because a group of assholes who were active for not even a century of total time - much of that in the shadows after a colossal defeat - have tainted that symbol.
Genuinely makes me wonder if it will be tainted forever or if humanity will manage to reclaim it for peace... somehow.
Edit: Ya'll need some reading comprehension. Billions of people using it in India and China, etc, does not mean it isn't tainted in other countries. Go try to display it anywhere in the US or Europe, etc, and you're gonna have a bad time. That. Is. What. I'm. Talking. About. Jfc...
Yeah my grand uncle was named adolphe. Not a single family member since named their child like that. Same goes for the swastika. Sure it benign in a lot of contemporary Asian or older culture(s) but ww2 happend and left a huge scar to this day
The swastika itself isn't bad, the nazis that stole it and bastardized it (along with many other religious symbols **growls in angry norse paganism**) are the ones that are unforgivable monsters
Fascism is like a virus that spreads taking advantage of symbols that people already identify with. They even wanted to resignify the word "socialism" and nowadays they are stealing the word "libertarian" and freedom related words and symbols.
I was in Japan recently and there are lots of swastikas on Google maps because of all the temples. It was my first time seeing the symbol used in its proper setting. Since I’m from the West though, I did have a slight jolt of surprise on the first couple that showed up.
Behind the Bastards does an excellent episode on the Swastika, its historical uses and how and why it was adopted by the Nazi’s. I fully suggest anyone who wants to know more should check it out.

When I was in college one of my professors told us that there are a bunch of swastika carvings in one of the rooms in the oldest building on campus. The building was, at the time of my attending, around 150 years old. They were put there due to orientalism, not Nazism, but we were still told this with a grimace because my campus had a neonazi problem lol
Every airport I’ve been to in Asia has meditation/prayer rooms. And Buddhism is always indicated by the swastika. Fuck the Nazis for appropriating and defiling it.
man, nostalgia moment to when i was in 9th grade and heard this joke for the first time. unfortunately, it hasn't gotten funnier.
it was in a logic portion of a math class. ~c. ha ha.
That guy had some of the best lines/delivery of the whole series.
"Fact: In 100% of all fake-gun related shootings, the victim is always the one with the fake gun."
Dhruv Tara. Due to earth's inclination, there is a circle formed while on its rotation on its axis. And Dhruv Tara i.e. North Star is the center of that circle. That's why it's always at same place. There are many interesting and inspiring stories around this in India. Those 7 stars are called as Saptarshi i.e. 7 sages.
Yes. It was also a symbol to northern European pagans as well, which is why the Nazis adopted it. There are iron age helmets in Germany and Scandinavia with swastikas on them.
Swastika comes from protoindoeuropeans and their descendants, so basically europe, persia and north india, swastica became a scared symbol for hinduism and then for buddhism
Prior to world war 2, many eastern religions used the swastika as symbol of good fortune and placing at the doorstep of the home is a way of extending well wishes to those who visit. This is a particularly important symbol for the holiday Diwali.
So mixed feelings here.
Op is old and lives in Alabama. When looking at their post history they have recently shown evidence of climate change denial but going back some shows they were a frequent poster in truthleaks. They are as right wing as any GOP member in the USA so I have no reason to doubt they are a nazi and the swastika is intentional. As for why it isn't tilted, nazis are morons.
I’m pretty sure this is where the Native Americans created this symbol from before it became known as a swastika.
1. Whirling Log: Among the Navajo, the symbol was often referred to as the “whirling log,” which represented a sacred image connected to healing and protection.
2. Sacred Sun Symbol: For the Hopi, it was sometimes considered a sacred sun symbol, symbolizing the four directions and the four major clans of the tribe.
3. Four Arms: In some Plains tribes, the symbol might be referred to simply in descriptive terms related to its shape, like “four arms” or “four-armed cross.”
outside of the obvious nazi stealthposting, it's useful to know just in case I wake up in a field at night with no memory and for some reason need to know what season it is.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hmm...

Right…wayyy too close
It's a space... windmill!
Solarmills? Charge!!!
Mmmhhh
Except, of course, if the Earth rotates all year long, in which case the big dipper goes around the north star just about every night.
Found the correct comment that wasn’t talking about swastikas!
Though that does make it kind of worse because there's literally no reason it has to be a swastika at all.
Finally……..! Every time some one says something intelligent one person can leave the internet….
I thought so too, and assumed OP meant "at midnight"
That's a waxing crescent moon which is going to set early evening.
And the seasons depend on what part of earth you reside
The title does say this is for the northern hemisphere though.
Not to mention, the Big Dipper doesn't really rise like this for a good portion of the Southern hemisphere, and the North Star doesn't come up at all once you go south of the equator. Did Frank Reynolds make this?
It's 4 f's....I didn't know it was gonna come out like that
Pretty sure you did
You knew damn well how it was gonna look
*disgusting trumpet noises*
It's just 4 sky biceps dude, nothing strange about it!
r/accidentalswastika
I don’t think it was accidental as putting the arrows to the center in several other places would have solved this “accident”.
the arrows are there because that's how you find the north star. you line up the other two stars in the dipper
Where would the arrows go? You find the North Star by following the path the two stars make in the Big Dipper as shown by the arrows.
It's not accidental because this comes from an old article making the case that the symbol was likely used by Native Americans after being directly inspired by this perception of the stars.
Imagine having to care what it might look like.
It's not accidental. It's the origin of the symbol itself.

Better example is white supremacist's taking the 'ok' hand symbol and making it their own, so now you cant use 'ok' without being marked as racist.
The swastika itself isn't bad, the nazis that stole it and bastardized it (along with many other religious symbols **growls in angry norse paganism**) are the ones that are unforgivable monsters

Wait is this the origin of swastika? It had many good meanings before Nazi Germany if you were unaware.
What's this a cool guide to, how to get a swastika on the front page? *Again*?
Lols aside, I wonder if this is where the symbol actually comes from…? it’s a sacred symbol in Buddhist and North American indigenous cultures.
Yes. It was also a symbol to northern European pagans as well, which is why the Nazis adopted it. There are iron age helmets in Germany and Scandinavia with swastikas on them.
Its cross cultural nature reminds us we’re all born under the same sky.
Swastika comes from protoindoeuropeans and their descendants, so basically europe, persia and north india, swastica became a scared symbol for hinduism and then for buddhism
It's a very simple motif with rotational symmetry so it's probably just something that independently seemed like a neat symbol.
For the northern hemisphere
Heil Dipper
I don't think it's accurate, maybe turn it around 45 degrees, that should fix it!
Real sad that the first thing people now see of this symbol is the Nazis and not the symbol of prosperity like it used to be.
Dicks stole a cool salute too.
And the whole skinhead movement
Prior to world war 2, many eastern religions used the swastika as symbol of good fortune and placing at the doorstep of the home is a way of extending well wishes to those who visit. This is a particularly important symbol for the holiday Diwali. So mixed feelings here.
The curious question would be, is the ancient symbol based off of this specific constellation and its movement through the sky over the year?
Somewhat yes, a similar diagram is shown in Swastika's wikipedia page
