I ask when I call up to cancel card. Always speak to a person and get confirmation before account is closed.
Sometimes you need to push pretty hard to get it.
It’s people like you who will end up with banks making it ever harder to get these cards. I don’t think paying for a year is a big deal for the benefits.
You know what subreddit you’re in right?
There is a very small part of the population who churn credit cards. Certainly not enough to make a big difference. The banks make more than enough profit from the people who rack up huge debt and pay massive interest and fees or don’t read the T&Cs and pay the fees but don’t get the benefits.
Then there are the people who get the QFF/Velocity points and use the to purchase items with low point/dollar ratios.
I’ll just continue anyway thanks, hopefully it doesn’t hurt the banks multi billion dollar profits too much or affect the other 10million Australians with CCs.
On the Premier Platinum I had a prorated annual fee refunded two weeks ago (only paid for two months) and Westpac gave me one for the Altitude Black Qantas in the last two months
Held the qantas premier card for three months and called to request refund on annual fee. Was denied initially and then escalated to manager and managed to get 50% refund.. worse off than pro rata but at least better than nothing
How does the refund work in terms on which account it is applied to? Doesn’t the card/statement need to be paid off in full prior to cancellation? Then assuming the refund is applied to that account, but the card is now cancelled.
I just called and got a pro rata refund for Qantas premier.
I called and said I was refinancing my home loan and needed to cancel card.
After he read through some information about closing I said, what happens with the annual fee? I've only had it for about 6 months. He said we will offer you a pro-rate refund.
The days of year 1 AF refunds are over
Not entirely. I received a full refund from Citi after holding card for 2 month and a half refund after holding an ANZ card for 5 months.
What's the protocol for this? Just asking when card is active?

Good news that they’re still giving some out. I have received refunds with Citi and ANZ too.
