If there was a modern day version of the Coneheads, I can totally see a background shot of this sitting on her bed with other “coneified” stuffed animals 😂 Love the lil pengie!
he really is! and btw don't feel bad about your results ever! even though my flair still says newbie I made a lot of progress during the years and you only achieve that by doing things wrong.
I wear my scarf that becomes wider then thinner and then wider again over and over (because I lost count of the stitches) with pride.
Friends? don't seem to have noticed, and even if they did, they have waaaay more words of praise!
This is just to say that every mistake teaches you sometimes and the beauty of this hobby is that you can do whatever you want, the community is the friendliest in the whole of reddit, and everyone is always full of great suggestions.
This wall of text just to say that you did a great job, you probably learned a thing or two in the project and your next one will look even more beautiful!
(btw does this handsome penguin have a name yet?)
Next time if you still struggle with single crochet maybe try half doubled. It would be less stretched, but still a bit easier to see. Otherwise well done. It looks lovely if a bit silly for obvious reasond
Stitch counters can also help you see where the stitches are. Mark them right as you make them until you get a cadence. I struggle with seeing where my first stitch of a round is sometimes and that helps. With really tough yarn I sometimes mark every stitch until I really get going.
Noble People of this sub: I don't even crochet, I subbed just so that every now and then I can see these CHARMING, ADORABLE creations on my feed.
They have so much character and they make my day so much better!
He looks like a cute big brained penguin scientist who was caught red-handed and by surprise doing crazy experiments in his lab 😭
What was he making? A penguin flying machine? A fish delivery system? A Leopard Seal Death Ray?! We'll never know 😭
I subscribe to the book binding sub. I would never in a million years attempt book binding. The process looks like it would not be enjoyable and would just make me angry haha. But boy do I love to see the amazing creations people are able to produce! Some of the artwork is just stunning! All this to say you are not the only one subbed to craft subs you don’t partake in. 😅
I don't understand why this is downvoted. If op wants to use double crochet for their first chenille project they should be allowed to do so. 🤷♀️ Whatever makes it easier to get the hang of working with what can sometimes be a nightmare yarn. 🧶☠️
Yes anyone can use the stitches they want and adapt patterns, but it should be fairly obvious that if you’re following a sc pattern using dc it will be about twice as tall?
If you want to use dc but have it look like the pattern image you then need to adapt the pattern accordingly.
But OP never said they WANTED the penguin to look the same 💀
They used DC to get a hang of it (for whatever reason) and the end result is pretty funny and cute so they shared it with us.
Exactly lol. We dont need to understand exactly, everyone is different.
Like who the hell am I to say what is comfortable to who. Even outside of personal preference, some people have literal conditions that make them experience things very differently. I wont even pretend to know what those experiences might be like
I’m sorry, but this is so cute and hilarious, I can’t stop laughing 😂😂😂 Well, in nature documentaries, the way penguins move through water always reminds me of torpedoes, so it’s not entirely inaccurate!
I expected to read the description with a “Why did he turn out so long? 😭” but the reason you did DC (US version) is so much sweeter and I love Long-guin that much more for it. You did a great job!
Using Bernat Blanket or other large chenille yarn for stuffies was a huge challenge for me. My first magic circle with the stuff took forever and I failed so many times. I agree with you that it is super hard to see what you’re doing with it.
Practice and really bright lighting helped for me.
I cannot express how much I love him. He reminds me of Pudge the penguin from Cats Don’t Dance, when his hair gets all static charged.

Awww! Now you have to make him a family of other oddly shaped creatures! I love it 😍 he has character. And several years from now you'll have a great example of where you started from!
You could try half doubles! I adapted a handful of patterns when I was starting because sc felt like it took forever 😂 hdc will still give you bulk to the stitch* for your viewing pleasure but is closer in height to a sc!
This was just a fun project to get used to working with this type and texture of yarn, the pattern was in US termonology but I altered it so I could see my stitches better.
https://preview.redd.it/9l7yq2ssv8ad1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fb0694eaa3db1b597eadfa934ae88ad605b1018b
I've been crocheting for two years
Your penguin is super cute. I recommend changing to a hook a few sizes bigger to make stitches more visible. That way the stitches will be more visible, but they will still lie the same way that you expect them to when using the correct sized hook. I found this helpful when learning how to read my stitches
That said, for chenille yarn in a dark colour, I also use feel to determine where to place my book.
I love him! Did you use stitch markers to mark the beginning of each round? This is a necessity for me when I’m doing amis but even more so with that bulky yarn. Another suggestion I have for the conehead affect is to alter the pattern like it shows in the pic from allfromjade on insta. This helped me the most with the bulky yarn.
https://preview.redd.it/xubw9l6bncad1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e95a4eb24ff9d94f0227d57389ff19b8670f8265
I would just bump his head down a bit, Push that last stuff you did a bit inward. This would make my day tho. Make more, and set them together, and put this one in there as the special one xD

My advice for working with yarn like this is to feel for the stitches! I couldn’t see a damn thing on the first teddy bear I made with this kind of yarn but I quickly learned to feel for my stitches and that helped immensely
With Amigurumi you really need to do single stitches rather than double crochet. It is really hard to see the the stitches in the chunky yarn. I just try to make sure to count each round in case I miss a stitch.
I don’t crochet (yet) and just follow along for peoples projects. I love them ALL but in particular the ones that turn out ‘wrong’ because they just have so much character 😂❤️
I'm having a really hard time not laughing really loud since my husband is sleeping next to me.
OP, I love it! Penguin is my favourite animal, and I feel like you've invented the penguin+.
Or the penguinator. Or penguinmen. Or superpenguin.
Edit: I also think I'm going to do this in the future 😁
Yeah single crochets are very much needed in stuffed animals 🤣🤣 like someone else said though, try half double see if it works any better, but yeah using double crochets you need to use less rows cause they'll be more stretched out and making it very long 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I love him tho!!
I usually get so upset when i mess up a pattern, but this is straight up delightful :’) I never realized how silly and cute a comically tall penguin would be
its still cute. I had a bad experience with chenille yarn back in the early 2000's that I never bought any since. but looks like yours held up. I went to joann's some months ago and was just browsing the yarn section. saw some chenille yarn but the quality just looked pitiful. but yours looks pretty good. I know it didn't turn out like the 2nd picture but just need to work on shape and size. it takes practice. I once bought this crochet blanket kit with yarn and a pattern, did the crochet according to the instructions and sadly it didn't turn out that way and I gave up. I honestly don't know what I did wrong. I made several more attempts and the results never changed.
I hate working with this kind of yarn, but I've gotten sort of used to it. Instead of trying to see the stitches, I feel them, and that has worked a lot better for me. The first couple of times using it, I also laid a piece of scrap yarn in every stitch of the round I was on to help me see better.
Okay, with only pictures for context, I think I know what went wrong. I’m assuming the pattern you used was written in British crochet terms, not American, and you used American crochet stitches. British terms are all “sized up” one stitch. So an American single crochet is a British double crochet. An American double crochet is a British treble crochet, etc. As a general rule, amigurumi almost always uses American single crochet unless stated otherwise for specific stitches. Try again using American single crochets and he will be perfect! Everything else looks amazing!
No - you didnt understand properly - she used dc instead of sc to better see the stitches. When you start with chenille, especially with darker colors, its impossible to see the stitches.

My roommate said, "It looks like it ate a sweet potato whole and is trying to hide it" 🤣 I love it
Hahahaha 🤣🤣🤣🤣 That's got me chortling in my office like a nutter!
That was the most British “lol” I’ve ever heard 😭🤣
I even read it with the accent without noticing😭😂
I can’t stop laughing 😄😄
Please pass on my delight at this comment to your roommate 😂
I have, and I'm sorry to report that it has inflated his ego. Thank you for that 😆
😂 🍠 🐧 💖
Or a torpedo, like he is part of the penguins from Madagascar
big brain penguin, they're the wisest of the colony ;)
I've been telling everyone that he's just super smart

FRANCE. HE COMES FROM FRANCE.

Same!
L O N G
long longggggg mannnnnn
Honestly the love in this sub for misfit (positive term) products makes my heart so warm. I would buy this penguin 😆❤️
We need to make a calendar of all the amazing beautifully wonky creations here. They truly light up my day!
I would buy that. That sounds amazing.
Me too! I'm so glad everyone likes him!
I think you might have got your regions mixed up. Does the pattern specify to use UK terminology or US?
OP said in the text box under the pic that they used dc to be able to see the stitches better
That's not how it works :>
theyre using chenille for the first time and said they are practicing and couldn’t see sc stitches, not that deep 🤷♀️
Maybe to them it does? They literally said thats the purpose of DC so obviously they didnt do it on accident
They knew it was going to be taller. They're sharing it with us because the end result is adorkable.
But OP never said they WANTED the penguin to look the same 💀 They used DC to get a hang of it (for whatever reason) and the end result is pretty funny and cute so they shared it with us.
Maybe you'd know. If she wanted the same looking results using DC, could she just double the stitches in each row?
Yes, using multiples of 12 would have gotten them closer to the original shape.
Exactly lol. We dont need to understand exactly, everyone is different. Like who the hell am I to say what is comfortable to who. Even outside of personal preference, some people have literal conditions that make them experience things very differently. I wont even pretend to know what those experiences might be like
He looks so funny!! I love him
A conehead penguin. I’m 💀 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Totes adorbs
He comes from France!
I looove himz/herz
This is so funny and cute lol
Omg he's so hilarious I love him!
i love him

You have a very nice cone penguin
This brought me so much joy LMFAO I love it so much.
Haha I love this! A bit odd but cute
Clearly this is Adventure Time Gunter! Wenk!🐧
I love it!! 😍 😂 you could make a whole kids bowling pin set with a bunch of those! Long penguin is LONG.
oh please dont frog. please keep him.
Oh I'm keeping him!
I expected to read the description with a “Why did he turn out so long? 😭” but the reason you did DC (US version) is so much sweeter and I love Long-guin that much more for it. You did a great job!

Love him
Looooong boi
I love it! And also high fives. I find chenille so hard to work with.
Reminds me of Gunter from Adventure Time! Super cute!!
I LOVE HIM SO MUCH OMG
#LONG
Crochet a beanie for him because his head is already beanie shaped!

YES my first thought too
I love him!
Nailed it
Don’t worry, just call him Kowalski and it’ll be fine
Ponguon
He’s so goofy, but I love him even more because of it????
Awww! Now you have to make him a family of other oddly shaped creatures! I love it 😍 he has character. And several years from now you'll have a great example of where you started from!
Or all the same thing - like different creatures shaped like ears of corn!
You could try half doubles! I adapted a handful of patterns when I was starting because sc felt like it took forever 😂 hdc will still give you bulk to the stitch* for your viewing pleasure but is closer in height to a sc!
hes so stupid i love him

This made me spit out my coffee lol
he's perfect
Conehead pingu 😆 They're so cute and I love the texture the yarn gives them!
It’s a Coneguin!
Flawless 😂
I love him.
He looks like the penguin from adventure time 😭
I love him all wonky lol
Same happened to me! I think I'm going to try using a larger hook size next time
He looks like an eggplant haha I love it !
Was the pattern written in UK terms?
They said they used dc on purpose because they had a hard time seeing the sc stitches and wanted to share the silly outcome.
Ooohhh gotcha. That’s actually really funny. 😂
SC vs DC. I’m guessing this was a British pattern that said DC, so you did US DC, but it was meant to actually be US single crochet
No, it was a US pattern, I used DC purposefully, I didn't expect him to be so cone shaped
Well it is called double for a reason lol
Emphasis on "so" I love him the way he is
I'm not new to amigurimi or crochet, I'm new to chenille yarn, I know what I'm doing

Cone head penguin
Genuinely need this
I love him and his longness
Hrs adorable 💓
This is cute!! It’s a conehead version!
He’s cracking me up so much but I would love to have him. Lol
AND you used velvet yarn for a beginner. That is not easy. Great job!
I feel like he could be an extra in the Penguins of Madagascar movie 😂💗 so cute
“Who you calling pinhead”
Bless his little pointed head 😂 I think he’s much more charming this way.
It looks like Gunter from Adventure Time
God I love him
My advice for working with yarn like this is to feel for the stitches! I couldn’t see a damn thing on the first teddy bear I made with this kind of yarn but I quickly learned to feel for my stitches and that helped immensely
ROOOFFLLL. Errrrrm. Time to practice single crochet. Or, better yet, time to make a series of conehead animals!
I love it
Looks like a penguin crayon. 🤣🤣🤣
Awww, he must come from the planet of the Coneheads. It’s nice to know they have cute penguins on their planet too. ☺️
Thank you for the giggles
awwww
Absolutely adorable!!!!!
Why the long face??? (so cute btw)
“Who’re you calling Pinhead?”
A penguin pencil! I love him
This is the best thing I have ever seen and it deserves a place of honour in hour house where you can always see it.
He grew!
This is the cutest thing 🤩
and this is why we have different types of stitches 😂😂
Ahaa lol its cute, but your hand looks AI in the first pic bc the perspective is weird
OMG!!!! It’s so derpy in the best possible way!
This is so derpy and amazing, please keep it as memorabilia for your future, older self and/or kids 🤣
I love him so much
i want it bro its so cute
With Amigurumi you really need to do single stitches rather than double crochet. It is really hard to see the the stitches in the chunky yarn. I just try to make sure to count each round in case I miss a stitch.
I don’t crochet (yet) and just follow along for peoples projects. I love them ALL but in particular the ones that turn out ‘wrong’ because they just have so much character 😂❤️
So cuute
The cousin of that one Bee plushie 💀
big fan of this guy
He- 😭😭
I love him!
he long
It's absolutely adorable! Kinda Megamind vibes. You did a great job. It looks unique.
Q
Hahaaaa I love this!
Lol
He's special, but I like him.
If you use double crochet you probably have to double the amount of stitches 😂 It’s cute though 🥰
Yeah single crochets are very much needed in stuffed animals 🤣🤣 like someone else said though, try half double see if it works any better, but yeah using double crochets you need to use less rows cause they'll be more stretched out and making it very long 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I love him tho!!
Cute and cuddle for a small arm
My first thought was “Conehead penguin” 🤣🤣🤣 I still think it’s cute!
I usually get so upset when i mess up a pattern, but this is straight up delightful :’) I never realized how silly and cute a comically tall penguin would be
this is amazing are you kidding!! he got a big brain lol!!
That penguin looks cute!
He’s so adorable!!
he's so adorable, I feel like you could pass off his special qualities as purposeful.
Now this is what Bob Ross would call a “happy accident”. I absolutely love him!
Gunther
Wow !!! Very cute :))))
It’s a cone head penguin! 😄
To give it a more dome shape you can do sc8 into the magic ring instead of 6. It'll be less cone-like lol
its still cute. I had a bad experience with chenille yarn back in the early 2000's that I never bought any since. but looks like yours held up. I went to joann's some months ago and was just browsing the yarn section. saw some chenille yarn but the quality just looked pitiful. but yours looks pretty good. Adorable! I love using chenille for stuffed animals because it doesn’t get all ‘pilly’ over time if it is handled a lot.
LMAOOO I LOVE HIM 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🙏🏾🙏🏾
He's perfect & what he was meant to be! Your stitching is spectacular. 🐧
Aww, it’s Suppository Penguin! Lol he’s cute!
I love him
He reminded me of the cone heads. 😂
Love your version
I hate working with this kind of yarn, but I've gotten sort of used to it. Instead of trying to see the stitches, I feel them, and that has worked a lot better for me. The first couple of times using it, I also laid a piece of scrap yarn in every stitch of the round I was on to help me see better.

Looks like you’re from the US but used a UK pattern :)
No - you didnt understand properly - she used dc instead of sc to better see the stitches. When you start with chenille, especially with darker colors, its impossible to see the stitches.
I actually didn’t read what op said. I didn’t see there was a caption.
He's cute! I think you followed a UK terminology pattern. I made that mistake once 🤣
They specifically said they used double crochet instead of single to be able to see their stitches better.
So cute! Looks like you've used TC instead of SC to me, which is how you achieved the extra long bubs. Just incase anyone else wants one too 🐧⭐
[удалено]
That’s what they said in the caption.
