1st- I love this so much! The shape is spot on! I've added buttons to bags & they work pretty well. The only issue I see here is how to make the hole for it to go in. All I do, is as I'm getting ready to make the opening I gage how big it needs to be to go through but stay snug. Then skip a few stitches and do a few single crochets. Once it looks big enough count the number of stitches skipped & pick back up to attach it. I'm probably not explaining this very well. But I'm sure you could find something on YouTube that would help. Another option would be a zipper! Good luck! It really is a darling sweater.

thank you so much! im terrified to try zipper it only because the yarn is so fine and fuzzy, worried it might snag or something. but what you said about eyeballing the size of button and chaining that many is what i should have done now that i think about it. she decided on buttons after i had finished the trim/hem part. maybe i could make it thicker? thanks again!

You could totally just add buttons that fit the holes in the sweater. I have done it, maybe add 1-3 more rows to the edges

You could slip stitch into the edging a bit and make some button loops with a foundation sc. Then sew buttons on the other edge. They won’t be traditional buttons but it’s an easy fix to the problem and will still look cute. The pattern is busy enough that the loops won’t contrast too strongly.

Ohhh that's a brilliant idea!! I like that a lot, thankyou for this! I think that way will work out best, I'll be trying this tomorrow. Thank you Very much :)

What about buttons that are sewed onto the two sides? The picture is an example of what I mean, I don’t think these exact ones would look good, but the concept would work maybe? https://preview.redd.it/52q0w0y0xnbd1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ac525f182ed57ac9b097e4d9f24dbe2776188390

I also found this crochet tutorial for creating closure like above: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BCYu2xAF9yE
