This is so fucking badass and explains everything. When I watched his video (before knowing about his inner demons), I thought it was NUTS that he started sprinting in the rounds of 15. He didn’t say it, but not only did he not give up, he fucking put the pedal down.
The fact that he even had enough mental capacity to not only start the open but win 24.1 says so much about his perseverance and the family who raised him. Broke my heart listening to him.
So sad for him, losing your mum is devastating. I’m glad he found strength in her in that moment. I hope he takes care of himself and does what he needs for himself this season (that could be competing, or not competing - selfishly I hope competing because he’s one of my faves!)

I saw this last week, truly heart breaking. Definitely rooting for him.
