Neither? My average work day comes down to:
* 6 hours of "work". That is anything I do for the company form coding, emails, meetings, mentoring, etc...
* 1 hour lunch
* 1 hour of random breaks during the day
I never put in 8 hours of "work" any day of the week. Saying that I would choose 5 days since I would probably get less done 4 days per week comparatively.
I used to be productive for crazy hours when i worked on my own game projects. But i can only do that with sufficient rest in between, and also only if i get deep in the zone with something i’m enjoying.
Real professional work has far too much context switching for me to remain productive and I usually fine I only get a few short hours of productive individual work done each day. The rest is tedious bitty work, general corporate bs etc;
The downside is, as much as I’d love a 4 day week, sometimes the BS parts cant really be sped up, and sometimes shit just keeps rolling over to the next day
If I was in charge of hiring it'd be 8 x 4 & hire additional staff to make up for the potential drop in productivity. That said, I don't think that would be necessary, as I imagine that well rested people are more motivated.
Ever noticed how much less productive you are after a bad night's sleep? How solutions to problems you've been battling with surface when out for a walk?
I think the argument for reducing overall working hours is more compelling. The reality is that people tend to have other commitments outside of work, & the current setup leaves little to no time for doing things that are not compulsory.

I can't stay truly productive for a full 8 hour day, 10 hour/4 is more convenient for my lifestyle but I'm definitely getting less done

10 hours in a single day is crazy to me. I am not able to be productive for 8 hours in a day. For the two extra hours I would be worthless.

4 10's is rough because it's 4 ~11s with lunch and/or commute. Rest of your day is shot on those 4 days.

Neither. Some days I will work 12 hours, some days I will work 4 hours. It depends on what is needed and how I feel about working that day.
