Scan every job board that addresses your job market, but apply on the employer's site.

letsridetheworld

Thanks for this

who_am_i_to_say_so

+1 for direct contact - or via a good recruiter. LinkedIn submissions are expendable, forgotten about, and more superficially qualified.

ClassyGlassyBoy

Why ?

starraven

You post a lot wizardfrog. How do I become as wise as you?

saintteddy78

What if you apply on every site possible, indeed, linked, employer site, zip recruiter. They’d have to sift through your resume five times in a row xd they might change their mind on the fourth one.

NewChameleon

I just use linkedin, it's enough for me for your 2nd question >Is LinkedIn premium worth it no

SharpSocialist

I agree but I use premium every time I get a free month. I don't think it helps me a lot.

crek42

I think it’s worth it. It lets me see how many applicants a job posting has, so I just skip right over the 500+ applied ones. Much higher impact to only apply to low count jobs. That’s where all of my interviews have come from.

fscottfitzgerry

This is true but I think one thing people don’t mention enough is how LinkedIn gets that number. They’re not actually getting data from the company sites, they count anyone opening the link as an applicant, whether or not they apply. It’s probably best to avoid 500+ applicants regardless, but don’t be too scared by the number. What I’ve found is better is to just only apply to jobs posted in the last 3 days, anything over a week is usually flooded to shit.

crek42

Yea for sure. It basically just logs the click through. Some companies have a more involved application process and it’s fair to say many of them bounced before completing.

Forrest319

A user has to manually tell LinkedIn they applied to a job if it's not easy apply. I expect that very few users take that manual step.

dev-tacular

Wait does the free tier also show that?

crek42

Nope

dev-tacular

Really? Why can I see the count then? Am I tripping? I had LinkedIn premium for a free trial, but it’s been inactive for years now

crek42

Do you see “Over 100”? Or an exact number? I believe the free version gives you a rough count but stops counting at a pretty low figure, so you don’t know if it’s 101 or 1000. Premium gives exact count and will show what experience level the applicants have and what country they’re based , so you also get a decent idea of how much spam applicants a posting gets.

dev-tacular

Oh yeah I only see 100+. I skip over those

Lazygyyy

I only use LinkedIn premium for LinkedIn Learning. It's pretty useful. But other than that it's definitely not worth it

PoopsCodeAllTheTime

Build an RSS newsfeed from the job boards/alerts that you like with n8n, use miniflux to consume it. Be an early applicant every time. Fight fire with fire. If you want to be even more chaotic, use something with AI.

TRibbz24

God tier

PM_ME_JOB_OFFER

Do you have an actual setup like this you're willing to share or are you just memeing?

PoopsCodeAllTheTime

Some sites offer an RSS feed, sometimes you can search and someone made their own publicly available like [https://hnrss.github.io/](https://hnrss.github.io/) but I do write my own glue-thing for github notifications and for linkedin email offers. I don't want to actually share it from this account, but you can DM me your email and I'll sign you up to my blog newsletter. If enough people show interest I will write that blog post. Or you can do the work yourself, should be straightforward with n8n or zapier. Personally I self-host n8n for free and miniflux too, you can use these templates as a starting point: - [https://n8n.io/workflows/471-send-github-notifications-to-discord-webhook/](https://n8n.io/workflows/471-send-github-notifications-to-discord-webhook/) - [https://n8n.io/workflows/1418-create-an-rss-feed-based-on-a-websites-content/](https://n8n.io/workflows/1418-create-an-rss-feed-based-on-a-websites-content/)

artemis1939

HAHAHA what a fucker. "DM me to sign up for my newsletter". You're from Nigeria too or how much more obvious do you need to make it you're a scammer?

AdeptKingu

Man these posts are becoming annoying with accusing every helpful replies like this with bot spamming. Did the guy force his service? No! He was ASKED and he responded "IF INTERESTED, do this" emphasis on "IF" 🙄

artemis1939

He could have just answered here rather than singing up for a blog newsletter but fuck it whatever dude. You do you.

PoopsCodeAllTheTime

I'm not going to write 10 paragraphs on a reddit comment telling you how to set-up a workflow with your github PAT, an RSS webhook, and an IMAP polling service, you tweakin.

Joethepatriot

Putting that system on your resume: "if your reading this, the system worked 🗿"

I don’t like LinkedIn at all but I still think it’s worth it for the job hunting push because like it or not, people use it (some of them won’t shut up on there) and it only takes one action to land a job (early application, see a friend say so and so is hiring, etc). I’ve done premium for a month a few times and I’d only say it’s worth it if you like to obsess over things like who viewed your profile.

HeyNiceCoc

All my job board success has come from indeed

who_am_i_to_say_so

Indeed. There’s a lot of cruft as with most, but I’ve landed more interviews via indeed more than any other source. LinkedIn is like pissing into the wind.

HeyNiceCoc

Facts. When I first started searching I bought a year of LinkedIn premium to message recruiters and such, after all of that I still have overwhelmingly landed interviews from indeed. Additionally of those interviews a lot of them are from applying on indeed instead of the company site!

rkevlar

In my 5 years as a SWE I don’t think LinkedIn’s ever done anything for me.

OneAct8

It’s a crap shoot, use everything at your disposal. Also LinkedIn is ass.

bjogc42069

Everybody trashes LinkedIn and then recommends that you go use some other job board that contains all of the exact same postings as LinkedIn. Every comment in this thread just says don't use LinkedIn but nobody gives any alternatives to use.

motherthrowee

it's less that they contain the same postings and more that they are less clogged with 1000 suspect promoted spam/contract jobs and 100000 postings by "Data Annotation"

encony

LinkedIn got me a job

OneAct8

That’s cool, I still think it’s ass Like what? Lmao

encony

You sure can have your opinion. But if people reading this sub they should be able to get a balanced view and in my opinion LinkedIn can be helpful to get a job.

OneAct8

> use everything at your disposal

KSRJB02

It's still better than other job boards, all the other ones have way more ghost listings and LI posts sometimes actually have the recruiter or even the HM attached for contact. I just wish all alums were counted as 2nds lol.

wot_in_ternation

Keep it updated and toggle your "open to work" appropriately. I landed my current job because a legit recruiter found me there, although I had \~5YoE at that point. I have never paid for premium and likely never will. I've never used the free trial. My personal opinion is that it is probably best for people who have niche skills that are in-demand

LaFantasmita

Premium lets recruiters message you directly without using a credit (which are expensive for them). If your skills are niche and in reasonably high demand, go for premium. Otherwise no.

lessthanthreepoop

LinkedIn worked out well for me.

keyboard_operator

>other job boards Well, [Indeed.com](http://Indeed.com) + plus there are a number of local job sites in each country. But to be honest, I know almost all companies I would like to work for. So I just go to their websites and apply here...

xiongchiamiov

In my decade and a half of career, I have yet to find even a job I'd _consider_ through LinkedIn. It's just a giant pile of shitty stuff. Any smaller job board will be better. I personally find Wellfound to be the most useful because of the types of companies on it and the filtering capabilities it has. Thus far, I've found companies that I ended up working for via: * 4x network * 1x Wellfound * 1x knew the company by reputation and applied

chaz9127

I've had absolutely 0 success applying on LinkedIn. 2 straight up nos and the about 15 ghosted me. I switched up my strategy and started cold messaging recruiters for my area of expertise. I now have 4 job interviews over the next 2 weeks.

SharpSocialist

For me I have sent a lot of resumes with no responses, all on LinkedIn However I have been contacted by recruiters directly (still LinkedIn) without applying and it got me interviews. So I stopped applying and I just wait for opportunities to come haha. Note that I already have a job

adgjl12

Do you set it to actively looking or casually looking? I have it as the latter for now but only get a spammy contractor position every once in a while and nothing of quality. I have 4.5 YOE. In 2021 I was getting absolutely spammed while not having the setting on with lots of quality jobs. Added many recruiters for those jobs I declined as a connection for the future but basically all of them are unemployed rn 💀 applied to about 50 and got 0 callbacks which hasn’t happened to me even as a sophomore looking for first internship.

SharpSocialist

For a while I had set it up as casually or actively looking, I don't remember, but I got a lot of garbage positions with low salary. Then I removed it so it does not say I am looking for anything. And with that there might be less recruiters contacting me but there are still some and it seems to be for higher quality jobs.

adgjl12

Gotcha, I am a bit wary of turning it off as I barely get recruiters now anyways. Just checked and I got roughly 1 per week since I turned it on several weeks ago. 4 garbage jobs, 1 amazon recruiter and that's it.

serg06

Never had success with a 3rd party job board

mrehm001

LinkedIn is the way to go , however it should not be treated as a single source of truth for finding jobs. Best to check other job boards.

TheCactusBlue

IMO, just replying to comments on Reddit is a good way to find a job.

Longjumping-End-3017

Even when there's a premium promotion of 50% off for two months I don't think it's worth it. The subscription is excessively expensive for what you're getting imo should be $5-9.99 tops.

CeaBasstard

Hey T I just got an amazing job thru linkedin. Premium is NOT worth it. Show you're passionate about software development thru personal projects or a blog (no one reads them so don't stress too much about quality or accuracy). Have a good attitude and convince people you're worth investing in. This market is not kind to juniors so make sure you have something to distinguish yourself. Goodluck on your journey!

Redditor6703

Check out the "links" section of my profile, I made a job board that sources jobs directly from companies and uses AI to let you filter based on specific number of YoE, programming languages, etc.

LinkedIns biggest benefit is that you can see who in your network is tied to a hiring company. They’re sorted to the top of openings — those are your best odds if you know the person well enough to ask for an intro.
