I can only imagine what it was like before. Now these images are a mere reminder of the bygone days.

[deleted]

My mom took me there once when I was a kid (late 90s or early 2000s), and I distinctively remember loving it. I remember the pony rides being fun, getting cotton candy, and riding one of those spinning mechanical horse machines. I also remember everything being very lively there. Seeing how it is today just makes me sad. Their neglect is robbing many children of precious memories that they could have had otherwise.

BlastVixen

Exactly. I took a touristy hop on/off bus tour and saw many such establishments where I could only imagine their former glory. It does rob children of joy and hope for the future, but so does the lack of food, the crumbling infrastructure, and general neglect of the people. I am curious, is that timing coinciding with the beginning of the special period?

[deleted]

Oh, absolutely, the collapse of the Soviet Union and the subsequent special period in Cuba is when everything began to degrade. Though, as far as I remember things got really bad during the special period, but then they stabilized for a couple of decades. And then the late 2010s hit and everything went from bad to worse. It could be that I was looking at life through rose-colored glasses because I was a kid/teenager during the 2000s, but I don't remember them being anywhere near as bad as the 2020s.

BlastVixen

It all could be. Also, maybe it is just getting to be the same old shit and you are losing hope. This stuff is difficult.

DSSMAN0898

All the ponies were made into picadillo a long time ago.

tempest2090

Wow

Javesther

Went there as a kid around 1982. I thought it was paradise. Everything is destroyed now , due to the failed economic and political system.

teewyesoen

It’s sad to see it fall into disrepair but you all act like there are no other abandoned amusement parks in the world. There is a whole subreddit for abandoned amusement parks.

Rguezlp2031

When is the only announcement Park in the whole country, yes it is hard to believe.

teewyesoen

It’s not the only amusement park in the whole country tho. Have you even been to Cuba?? There is one in Varadero and one in Miramar.

islenacaribena

The one in miramar has broken rides and not much for adults. Varadero is 2 hours away. Have you ever been to Cuba? To these parks you speak of???

Thunderbear79

Oh no! Not 2 whole hours away! 2 hours away from what?

islenacaribena

2 hours away from a nationwide gas crisis

Thunderbear79

80 years of crippling economic sanctions will do that.

islenacaribena

So will poor management from a non competitive market.

Thunderbear79

Hard to be competitive when crippling sanctions prevent being able to compete on a global market.

str8GullyMK6

Well with only the worlds largest exporting power (China) plus several other big nations to trade with, is it any wonder the economy is crippled?! Don’t talk on a country you most definitely bare 0 relation to.

teewyesoen

Yeah the one in Varadero is nice. All the equipment was functioning when we were there a few years ago, a big roller coaster for cuban standards.

Rosscoe13

We’ve got a run down amusement park in Canada as well.

pabskamai

Is it considered the main park in Canada, aka Canadas wonderland ?

Rosscoe13

You’re missing the point. It’s not a secret that Cuba is struggling. Posting polarized pictures with what intention? Who or what are you trying to inform? What’s your point?

straight_outta_c137

This is THE amusement park in Habana. You comparing to some random park in Canada seems out of touch . Im sure there are more functioning parks in canada. This is the exact behavior actual cubans hate when trying to share their story with the world

Rosscoe13

I go there a few times a year and listen to the story first hand. Next.

straight_outta_c137

I’m from there and go there few times a year. Are you this rude to cubans there too? Im done wasting my time with you and your tiny brain

Rguezlp2031

Don't feed the Trolls....

Rosscoe13

Rude? Wow. Simmer down. Cubans aren’t nearly as sensitive as you’ve become.

Cryptophorus

Canada being on the road to becoming another socialist shithole LOL

Rosscoe13

What’s a current ‘socialist shithole?’ Just so that we have something to compare to here.

WoodpeckerAlert4725

You're an idiot

Cryptophorus

LOL, I hit a nerve there!

OldFoot2117

America over here sipping this tea!

Skarma64

Canada is not even close to socialist, the only polices close to socialism are health and some of our welfare. But even then, barely. And even current policies being discussed are far from it. What's fucking canada is private companies buying up land, raising rents, and pricing our citizens, and private companies artificially raising prices on everyday goods. Fuck it's hard to get social housing moved in cities because of so much red tape. So yeah, canada is on the road to being a capitalist shithole.

Cryptophorus

The problems you are describing are socialist problems due to money printing, rent and price controls and socialist handouts. Free Market Capitalism is the only thing tat can solve them.

Brokeliner

La verdad

Skarma64

How are Private companies buying up housing and Private grocery stores jacking up prices socialist? Please explain? Because that stuff is your Free Market Capitalism.

Cryptophorus

Government intervention is what causes prices to go up. When there is free market competition prices go down. https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbesrealestatecouncil/2020/03/10/how-rent-control-hurts-the-very-people-it-seeks-to-help-and-what-we-can-do-instead/

pabskamai

This reminds me of my highschool and it's 25th anniversary, it was destroyed by then :( Nowadays I am even afraid to ask

randomnonwhiteguy

lol communinism is when abandoned theme park wait til you find out about six flags new orleans

str8GullyMK6

This is literally THE theme park. As in it’s supposed to be the biggest in all of Cuba, not some random theme park.

randomnonwhiteguy

Cuba's population is literally 33 times smaller than the USA, with a fraction of the GDP that's additionally weighed down by punitive American sanctions and massive commitment to a functioning healthcare system. just how many theme parks do you expect them to have?

str8GullyMK6

I’m literally Cuban. Little fyi if the population is smaller, obviously the GDP would be. Regardless, you tried comparing this to the US and a random theme park in New Orleans when it isn’t even comparable. The fact of the matter is Cuba is being held back by our governments system absolutely failing to allow for virtually any economic growth, stop self loathing and blaming the embargo. And please don’t praise our healthcare system when most healthcare workers literally flee the second they have the chance to escape the autocracy that has dominated our country for years.

randomnonwhiteguy

lol whatever bro, every cuban exile who complains about the government just ends up being some upper middle class bozo whining that Castro took away and ruined his family's beautiful sugar plantation. Before the revolution Cuba was a fascist fucking shithole that practiced slavery well into the 20th century, where far more people lived in far more abject poverty than today and questioning Batista's choice of hat got you publicly hung by your intestines. If you actually gave a shit about Cuban people's well-being you'd call for an end to the reverse iron curtain that is wrecking their livelihoods, instead of advocating for a Libya-style golpe de estado that'll strip away every semblance of stablility they have and turn the country into yet another worthless banana republic.

str8GullyMK6

News flash idiot Castro got his wealth from his family literally being plantation owners. Are you still tryna push this narrative 😭 slavery in Cuba ended before Castro was even born you dumb fuck. We’re rich because we worked hardddd, otherwise actually do some research and you’ll find that Cubans are still leaving, are you seriously tryna claim that all Cubans who left are slave owners? That’s ridiculous. One of the biggest emigrations of Cubans was literally majority working class people with criminal records, look up the Mariel Boatlift. We already didn’t have stability LOL. The problem isn’t the embargo, it’s the government both not paying back debts which results in lack of creditworthiness and puts off more foreign investment, and the lack of diversity in the economy as a result of a lack of free market. Your privilege and ignorance is insane.

randomnonwhiteguy

lmao sure your family got rich by working hard, was it the Chino indentured workers who made those bootstraps for you? not hard to guess what industry your forebears were in. A rich American wannabe gringo is literally the last person on earth who's allowed to have an opinion on Cuba.

str8GullyMK6

I’m literally AFRO-Cuban you absolute idiot. I’m also not American so wtf are you talking about😂 way to swerve the topic and still carry on from this ‘Castro freed cuba from slavery’ bs

[deleted]

capitalist sanctions will do that, unfortunately

str8GullyMK6

What was the excuse in the 90’s and 2000’s when the nation was under sanction but the theme park wasn’t depleted? 🤨

[deleted]

country can go into decline over time. Doesnt Cuba have mechanical sanctions too?

Other_Remove_6506

The result of the US embargo on Cuba. The US needs to lift their outrageous embargo on Cuba so that Cuba would be prosperous and will flourish. Also Socialism works in Cuba.

tempest2090

I'm sure any person from Cuba will tell you you are talking nonsense

Rguezlp2031

He's just a troll that create multiples accounts like every day to comment un this sub

Untelligent_Cup_2300

This sub is mostly made up of people who want their families land and power back. Who push this propaganda in an attempt to give their selfishness some legitimately while not explaining how these material conditions were made or how the Cuban exile community in the US contribute to these conditions in the first place.

str8GullyMK6

Families land and power? Are you guys seriously still clinging onto this? People leave Cuba by the 10s-100’s of thousands every year, are you forgetting the Mariel boat lift? Stop this absolute bullshit.

Untelligent_Cup_2300

Well considering how those people still influence American politics and help keep this stupid embargo going that is making things worse on purpose it is very much something that both actually happened and still needs to be considered. Cubas situation is largely the fault of the US and its actions you can't just ignore that and just say but muh communism.

str8GullyMK6

Cuba wasn’t anywhere near as much of a shithole even just 10/15 years ago. The embargo also doesn’t prevent Cuba trading with multiple world nations one of which is the biggest exporting and trading power in the world. Those people influence politics and encourage the embargo because the constant pressure on the tyrannical government is a necessity. The relaxed attitude of the people that has existed for centuries is why there isn’t open revolt, but people are still fleeing In droves.

kwl1

So, are the images in the following article the live image of capitalism? https://www.travelandleisure.com/abandoned-amusement-parks-7565333

xTheShrike

This comparison makes no sense. Did government policy force those Amusement Parks down?

Rguezlp2031

I just don't feed the Trolls. They make just Stupids comparations that doesn't make any sense at all.

kwl1

Where is the definitive proof it was government policy that led to the shutdown of this park? I could also pull up a bunch of old abandoned Olympic venues which were indeed a result of capitalist government policy.

HumanBeing23627

difference being that the US probably have shitons of amusement parks while Parque Lenin it's probably the most famous amusement park in Cuba. A fair comparisson would be if the article you posted were from Disneyland being completely ruined.

ThatMortalGuy

Do you have pictures of a properly functioning park in Cuba?

Rosscoe13

Thank you for understanding what I was trying to say.

meukbox

What's a Lennin?

romanbaitskov

Maybe related to Vladimir Lenin? Not sure though

blood_of_numenor

Yeah I think it just means Lenin Park

darthdodd

But how is Lennon Park?

mannydigital

Wow I remember when this place got a giant expansion from the Chinese in the early 2000’s, sad to see it like this
