It looks like your curls thrive until about shoulder length, so I'd personally start there and see if I want to go even shorter. You can always chop more off, but you can't undo a chop. I've personally been cutting my hair at home for over a decade - people are always shocked to hear this, but I think curls are more forgiving and it's harder to see potential imperfections.

Jennaannexox

Same here! I do my own because a lot of stylists don’t have and don’t know how to handle wavy or curly hair! I’ve cut and feathered my hair the last 16-17 years since I was 15! I have got my hair cut once during that time and it was like she did nothing at all I couldn’t tell the difference when it was done I was confused and she straightened it too witch weirded me out as well!!

sash285

kindly teach me, I'm desperate for a decent hair cut 🥺

ProcrastinatorPhD

May I ask if you use any special scissors? I have cut my hair myself before and got good results but I just used my regular scissors and a friend told me vehemently that I would get split ends as a result. Or is there perhaps a tutorial one might follow?

phoenixooz

Not the person you're replying to but I've also been cutting my own hair for many years now (after going to a specialist curly hair stylist and he talked someone else through a dry cut on a client next to me whilst doing mine and made it sound super easy so thought I'd give it a go and save a fortune!) I bought a pair of professional hair scissors from amazon. They cost a fraction of one professional haircut and they've lasted years. If i ever need to cut a stray curl and don't have them to hand and use "normal" scissors i can feel the difference in the cut. Hard to explain but it feels... rougher? I haven't inspected for split ends but I wouldn't be surprised if this was the result. I'd definitely recommend proper hair scissors if you're cutting your own hair regularly. As for tutorials there are a load of good ones online depending on your hairstyle, curl type etc. Manes by Mel is popular, i also used one to help with layering. My biggest tip is to style it completely then cut it when dry so you can see exactly how it will look as you go! Game changer.

ProcrastinatorPhD

Thank you so much! That is very helpful!! I’m going to look them up on Amazon and get myself a pair!!

Expensive-Fly-9999

As others have already said, having hair cutting scissors instead of regular ones makes a big difference (I think it's because they're a lot sharper)! There are countless tutorials out there depending on whatever cut you want; I've been doing it for so long that I just go for it, although I do section with hair ties if I want layers. I personally cut on day 1 or 2 dry hair and then wash/style it again to see if anything sits differently and if I need to make adjustments.

ProcrastinatorPhD

That makes sense! Thank you so much for sharing!!

Dull-Quantity5099

Also not the person you are replying to but I bought professional hair cutting scissors at a beauty supply store about 15 years ago for less than $50. You can also find them online. The YouTube tutorials are very helpful. I find it’s easiest to trim my hair while it’s wet and then cut individual curls at the bottom of the S when it’s styled to give it the right shape. As you practice and pay attention to the tutorials, you will get better at it and start to be able to know how to cut it on your own. It’s kind of a fun learning experience. I could confidently trim someone else’s hair now. I hope you try it again!

ProcrastinatorPhD

Thank you so much! That makes a lot of sense. Im hoping my curls will forgive any mistakes!

Significant_Cover958

Bought a good pair of scissors 5 years ago and I’ve been cutting my own hair too. Also my 18 year old daughter’s for 10+ years. Same as you mentioned it’s hard to tell if it’s not perfect and I don’t have to worry if the salon is going to listen to what I ask for.

erica1064

Agree with this. A deep conditioning will feel good too.

Watertribe_Girl

Agree

anguiila

yup, a haircut could help bring back curls. More lenght is more weight for the hair to pull, some curls end up stretched because of it. Remember, if you are going for a big chop, to cut and reshape every few months, so that the shape of the haircut makes sense for whatever the current length is as the hair grows.

BookwormInTheCouch

Yup, I waited too long to cut the damaged part of my hair and it only got worse. I really think OP could look awesome with short hair! I can see where the curls are.

Num_no

I'm really leaning towards chopping it I just don't know where a good hairstylist is in my area.

turquoisetrapezoid_

i have curly hair too! i usually just cut my hair myself. most times it comes out really nice. it’s great now; sort of a bob with bangs. the only thing is trimming it 😤 to cut, i start with the back then go to the front. edit: my curls are tighter than yours so most of the time my hair comes out in layers but overall my self-cuts come out really nice.

nautikasweet

I cut my own hair I had a terrible experience with a hairdresser and have done my own ever since. Look up Manes by Mel or Brad Mondo, they both have curly hair cut tutorials. Alternatively there’s is a hairstylist on instagram named Curlyhairdaze who offers guided personalized “virtual hair cuts” she will FaceTime you and help you cut your hair yourself she’s a professional hairstylist.

Jennaannexox

I would get it cut about 3-5 inches below your shoulders and then ask for feathered layers and face framing layers that will suit your face and your hair type aswell!! And PLEASE 🙏🏻 post a pic if or when you decide! I know ide love to see how it turns out! P.S I am a hairdresser.

Num_no

I will definitely try to remember to post if/when I do it.

Jennaannexox

Thank you 🥰

BauhausBasset

You can google curly hair stylists or input your zip into Deva Curl’s website to see if there are any near you. It’s how I found my last stylist.

SpicyOrangeCrush

Honestly just buy some hair cutting scissors and give yourself a cut. With that much hair, you can take a little at a time and get used to it. I’ve had good success styling my hair, then cutting it dry to an even length.

maternityquestion

I love your hair personally and would not chop it off. Maybe an inch if it had split ends.

Ironbookdragon97

Post on a local Facebook group. Most cities have an "informed" page and that's a great way to find stylists that's how I've found some.

ThatElizabethTaylor

Try pure brazilian miracle

sealarb

When I needed to find a curly stylist, I looked on Yelp and then looked on insta to see if the stylist/salon had examples of their work. It helped me figure out which stylist would be the best fit for my curls.

Cakeisvegetarian

I found my hairstylist on Instagram! Try looking up some keywords like #curlyhaircut #curlstylist and your city, that way you can see some cuts to see what your potential stylist can do and also gather some reference photos. Yelp is also a great resource.

I_do-declare

It looks good though!

meggan_u

Do not cut your own hair these people are crazy!

Loaf_Butt

I would definitely cut it, at least to the shoulders I think would be so cute! Pregnancy can absolutely change your hair texture, it looks like with you it made it even curlier :) I would guess that’s why you’ve got such a difference in curl about halfway down.

Num_no

I actually think it relaxed during pregnancy/breastfeeding. I stopped breastfeeding late 2022 so the curly growth in the first picture is probably from after I stopped. I had pretty curly hair in high school to the point I was known for having curly fly aways when my hair was up. I was called the lioness because of it.

Loaf_Butt

Oh that makes sense, I had it backwards! :)

radioactivebaby

That can definitely happen! Hormones often affect hair texture, but *how* it changes is pretty variable. Before you cut it, definitely try using a diffuser attachment on a blow dryer if you don’t already. I have similarly long hair and I’ve been amazed by what a difference diffusing my hair makes. It really brings out the curl in my wavier areas. You don’t have to fully dry your hair either, just enough for the products in your hair to form a cast, then you can let it air dry.

Munchies2015

Yup! I had some great photos of the weird, straight pregnancy hair as it grew out and my curls came back! Breastfeeding also kept it straight. Funnily enough, I don't remember it from my first kid, but it was really obvious with the second.

vitafl_emma_tica

If you want your curls to be more "curly", yes, the big chop Is the answer But If you like to keep them long they are pretty as they are

Krissei

I think you should cut it at least 8 inches, or below the shoulders if you like some length still! Your hair might bounce right up and shrink once you take some of the weight off of it. If you're looking to get all the damage off, I think shoulder length would be super cute on you! Also way easier to wash lol. Some layers may help with your curls having a little more freedom and volume if you're into that.\~ A few questions - What gel are you using? The hold might not be strong enough, or it might be too heavy for your ends. I personally like to use a mousse with hold, as I have finer hair and it's very easily weighed down. :) Have you tried a hair mask? It's not a fix all, but it might help with the lack of moisture. Good luck!

Num_no

I have never used a hair mask. I've wanted to try one but don't even know where to start. The gel I use is I think cantu I don't remember what specific one and right now what I have is in a travel container. I've never liked any mousses I've used personally. Edit: I should probably also add that the second picture was taken today. It's on its second day and I didn't style it last time I washed it so theres no gel in it. I also didn't sleep with a bonnet on as I normally would so it's not the best example of what my hair usually looks like.

Alf13

I recently purchased Sauce Beauty Avocado mask and I enjoy it! My hair is long and curly like yours. I thought I needed to cut it to bring my curls back but I just needed to hydrate it more. I comb the mask into my hair with a wet brush in the shower. And then leave it on for a few minutes and rinse with warm water rather than hot. It works for me.

Krissei

Understandable! I use a Marc Anthony mask in a blue container, & I use the app Yuka to see what products may have harmful chemicals in them. Definitely helps narrow down choices at the store. Cantu may not be right for your hair, but if you love gel try a different one when you run out. See if you can find gels marketed as lightweight. I used to use [this one](https://www.amazon.ca/dippity-do-Girls-Curls-Gel%C3%83e-11-5/dp/B01NAYYX05), though look at reviews because I honestly just remember LOVING the scent hahaha. A curl cream might help with daily styling, before applying gel, just to get some moisture in it daily. Finding what works best for your curls is a journey, so if you don't \*really\* want to cut your hair off, shop around a bit and see what works best before starting fresh if you have the financial means (product is truly so expensive lol T\_T)! Experiment and try to have fun with it :)) It took me a loooong time to figure out \*the\* routine for my hair, if you know what I mean lol. Oh also! Do you shower with really hot water? It might be furthering the damage to your texture. You could also have hard water in your home, which also affects hair texture. So many variables, so it's truly a process.

Num_no

I live in Arizona and if I'm not wrong the water here is very hard. I prefer cold or just warm showers to hot. I look like a lobster if I take hot showers.

vibes86

Hard water is something I have. I use Malibu’s shampoo for hard water at least once a month. Hard water deposits all those minerals onto your hair. When my hair starts losing its curl or feeling grimy, I use it. Works wonders.

gitsgrl

Looks like everything below your collarbone is damaged beyond repair. Your curls will look so good once the old hair is gone.

lilshadygrove

I think you definitely need a cut. The last few inches look pretty dead, which is probably why they’re not as bouncy as the top of your head. Short would be really cute and a good reset for your hair! Experimenting with other lighter products might be a good start as well. It looks like your ends are being weighed down.

OHiashleyy

This! Split ends need cut off.

julians_rum

Yes, you would look really cute with a curly shag. The length is totally weighing down your curls. Shorter layers are really going to add volume and make those curls bounce and bring them back to life. My hair was like yours, really long and one length. It really killed my curls. Here is a pic for reference of a curly shag— if you’re not a fan of bangs you can keep them longer. But I really do believe short layers on top and a healthy chop will really benefit you. https://preview.redd.it/2np8ec1uqm6d1.jpeg?width=736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e5849af02efa586b18f570a3b933e5c6947a9ec4

Loud_Ad_4586

Yes chop it off and start growing it from start!!! My hair was like that too and I cut it now it’s more healthy and more curly!

DueAssociate9313

yes,but remember every woman's canon event is to cut her hair amd regret it

Ok_Zookeepergame531

Yes, I know it's not the answer you hopped for, I restarted my hair growth and I learned alot with my old hair. Your hair is gona look 10x better if you restarted because you know. I learned that my hair looks good all around like jack Harlow or lil dick, I have 3a hair

Icy-Election-2237

What does restarting mean? Meant for you? Thanks! I’m dealing with major hair loss as well as flattening out of curls and’d like to know.

Ok_Zookeepergame531

Restarting means going bald and taking care of the scalp, I'm taking care of my dandruff, because the itching caused some minor problems makeing my hair patchy. (More hair than other spots on my head) I'd recommend it personally, because if you seek professional help, diagnosis and treatment will be easier. I know being bald might be discouraging, but your hair will also heal along with your scalp, and if you take the right oils and treatments your hair will look wayy better and you might grow back yout hair. If your interested I could tell you more, and about my hair journey

Icy-Election-2237

Thank you 🙏🏼 for your time and energy. Kudos to you!

Katlira

I just had to cave and cut mine. It looks so much better and so much easier to deal with. I started one day with a few inches and then a couple of days I cut even more.

maderisian

Curl health aside, I think a bob or long bob would look really cute!

RoosterInTheBoxx2002

Friends don’t let friends get friends haircuts

justnoticeditsaskew

You do what feels best for you but I'm also gonna go off topic and say I got confused and thought I was on the Bridgerton sub because I mistook you for Nicola Coughlan at first glance

Horror-Cry3715

Yes

ThroughLunasLens

The length is awesome, but I think you'll be happier after getting it cut. The ends really need to be cut off and doing so will help you with your healthy hair journey. Your curls will curl better and with the dead ends and dead weight cut off, you can then continue to grow out healthier hair. You'll get the length back, but remember to get trims when you need them. Slightly shorter hair is always better than longer hair with dry, frizzy, split ends!

bundafatlikepumbaa

It looks like your curl pattern may be damaged from about your shoulders/collarbones downwards. I think a chop would be a great idea!🥰

ChampagneOnSunday

I’m pretty much always “team long hair” but I think you’d benefit from a cut. I’d suggest only cutting two or so inches at a time though to avoid regret cause in the end your the one who has to live with it. And seriously, just cut it yourself as you are trying to gage the length. Curls are very forgiving.

snailtrail93

Personally I wouldn’t do a big chop, but I would get a lot of layers to lift the weight

cloudycrocodile11

You hair looks very dead you gotta chop it

[deleted]

[удалено]

cloudycrocodile11

That would be because i’m not a native speaker

myrmewmew

It’s okay it’s completely readable to English speakers. The main problem is “you” instead of “your”. How I would write it to be more proper is “Your hair looks super dead, you have to chop it” To write it causal I would say “your hair is super dead you gotta chop it” No matter what, it was totally fine!

Unusual_Shape_5825

I think you'd look great keeping it just past shoulder length! The shorter length would ddef help with the curls:)

MatchAdventurous7234

I honestly think you should try getting some layers! If you wear your hair curly most of the time, try finding a curl specialist near you who can recommend some good products, too. Layers will help lighten the weight of your hair and allow those mid shafts to curl more. Some brands we love at my curly salon are innersense and bounce curl!

Dependent-Tutor3124

I cut my hair short at a random hairstylist just a few weeks ago and it was the best decision I’ve made! My hair wasn’t damaged or anything but I’ve just always wanted to try short hair. :)

aprosexia_ii

Just cut mine real short it’s a good feeling i’m much happier you should go for it

Prestigious_War7354

I have curly hair too and just did the big chop! Now my head feels so light and my hair is beautiful….I say go for it, without any hesitation!

angelfangzz

YESS, shoulder length would definitely suit you better. your curls seem stretched AF

MaryaS5

noooooo keep the length it looks lovely plus with your curly hair it suits long better xxx

WarriorWomanOfYah

That curl would pop with aome layers in there and slightly rounded shape 😍

Igot2cats_

Yeah. The thing about curly hair is that once it’s severely damaged, there’s no way to bring the curl pattern back. Definitely research places that’ll actually do a good job so that your hair will grow in a way that actually works for your curl pattern.

ohcosmico

I would go for the big chop yes, but you should speak to a hairdresser .

Impossible_Advice_40

I would just get the ends trimmed.

beepbooplazer

I strongly disagree with people telling you to do a dramatic cut. I think it looks pretty good, maybe start with a couple inches trimmed to refresh. And go to a deva certified stylist.

christinkaUnicorn

I wish my hair grew that fast

exuter

EaseDizzy

Is it just me or she looks like the girl from shameless serie .

BlueEyedKite

My hair is very similar in length and curl! I am also considering a chop. I do love my long hair though and I don't know any curly stylists. I may just chicken out and trim at most. I feel your pain.

sailor-moonie-

I love chopping off my hair, it brings me joy so if you think it will make you feel better, go for it!!

Substantial-Bug-8402

If you can stomach it, I think you should do the big chop!! I had super long hair too and the curls were cute back then, but maybe after the chop, it was like my curls went to the next level!! I do miss my long hair, but am trying to see it like an investment... My curls have never looked healthier than they do now and one day I'll get my long hair back and it'll be curlier and healthier than before. 🥹

Linguisticameencanta

Yes. I got 2-3 inches off this week and it’s fixed a lot of issues I had. Not everything. I wasn’t expecting it to do more than fix the back knotting constantly.

rose1613

I’d go to a hairstylist your hair may be healthier then you realize. If it’s healthy just a trim to keep it healthier for longer if it’s unhealthy come up with how long you’d want to trim it.

cookiecat425

I don’t have curly hair and have no clue why this post was recommended to me, but girl chop it! That first pic with that one chunk right below your shoulder had me immediately going “yes, shoulder length!” and then I read your caption. Do it! Your hair is so pretty btw! <3

melitini

Yup. Curls look stretched out and mistreated. A chop will revive them and bring back some bounce. Also a gloss may be a good idea.

mariahspapaya

I deal with the same problem as you where having long hair weighs my curls down. Everyone says I should keep it long but it’s so much maintenance and my hair gets everywhere. Im trying to grow mine out now as long as possible with regular trims until I can donate some of it, but after I’m going back to a little below my shoulders, it looks so much curlier and more voluminous. I love big curly hair :) Like others have said, I would at least get a trim to cut the dead ends off and put a nice gel/mousse in it so it looks healthier and helps define it more

sabrinastanley9

Is your name Ambrosia??

Num_no

No…why?

sabrinastanley9

Lol sorry, you look just like this girl I knew 15 years ago and that was her name! Gorgeous

Wise-Peanut1939

Yes shoulder length

Babyella123

No

Katlo1985

Honestly, yes! You will feel so fresh and fun. Not to mention the added bonus of less hair in the summer so you are cooler, bouncy curls that move and some added confidence. I have the same hair as yours, and when i cut it at about my shoulders, it's like so cute and easy. I cut my own hair using a modified unicorn cut but if you are nervous to to a salon

Nervous-Drop-1582

Cut would be the best thing but try some protein treatments before to try bring back the curls

Mayaprema12

Yes, try something new… you will enjoy it!

MonthCapital2247

yes it will make your hair have more volume & potentially bring out your curl pattern much more, because your curls looked weighed down due to the length

firi331

Shoulder length would look great, and that’s where most of your healthy curls are. I’d go for it if you won’t miss the length. Or, cut off a portion at a time

Blixenk

Yes

lucyblu663

I have similar hair and have been thinking the same thing, i know a cut will help just have to pull the trigger 😅 I think getting a decent amount cut will really help though! For me I know the length makes my hair much less curly and the damaged ends make all of it more dry. You don’t have to get a bob but a good few inches would probably really help! You can ask your stylist to try to cut all the damage off and ask how much length that would be.

Accomplished_Basil29

I always promote a chop! Even if it’s just for fun, it’s so easy to get stuck in a rut as a curly. Here’s a past post with [my chopping experience](https://www.reddit.com/r/curlyhair/s/8qK0EHlhJ1).

Hellwmn

Nope. No no no

JaysStar987

I would say try finger coiling and then go for a cut; finger coiling really helped my hair; but also go to a hair salon thats for curlies that is well reviewed and talk to them!

SpockInRoll

You could just take weight out of the spots that are straight and help it curl a little

maizzy

Yes, though holy moly I can't believe how long you've got it with curls!!!! Well done. I think there are better hairstyles for you that would look overall better... But dang. I dunno if I'd cut it either hahah

jmac1066

No

daddysbestestkitten

I bet the Phoebe Spangler cut would be cute...I think everyone with curls should at least consider it

searequired

The parts you cut off can go to cancer survivors in a wig. No sure who does it though.

AlliBaba1234

I chopped mine after I experienced a seemingly-permanent texture change recently: best thing I ever did. It’s so easy to care for and actually STYLE (not just put into protective buns and braids). And it revived the curls. I asked for shorter in the back, tapering to longer in the front, and an emphasis on volume. My stylist was not a “curly specialist,” and I haven’t really had better luck with those folks versus just a great overall stylist. Take in a few photos of what you want, featuring people with similar texture, volume and even color to you.

WorkerProud4385

Noooooooooooo it’s gorgeous - you’re gonna regret it because with curly hair the shorter it is the curlier it gets and looks weird short imo

True_Run8619

I would just because it looks dead — & it doesn’t have to be like to your shoulders or anything, just like 3-4 inches so you can chop off the dead ends

annabannannaaa

i knew i had some split ends, so i went in and got about 3 in cut off (it was as much as i expected). somehow my hair didnt look any shorter, but it curls like 100x better!! its like night and day, im soo glad i did it. you’ll need more of a chop than 3 in, but i think itd be smart to chop it. youu can clearly see the spot where it needs to be cut - where the curls change from coily to weighed down and awkwardly shaped (shoulder length). itll be soo satisfying to have healthy hair!

cosmicgal200000

Read this before you cut!! It could absolutely be the pregnancy, my hair was long and wavy/curly and my hair grew in straight during my pregnancy. It was so noticeable when it was mid shaft and cutting my hair did not make it curl up the end bits just stayed straight until I eventually cut it all out and regrew. Honestly I think your hair is gorgeous and I really regretted it when I cut mine so definitely give it a few weeks to decide. And know that those straight bits likely won’t ever curl up like the rest of your hair

Easy_Friendship4966

Look up "The Curly Girl Method"... it saved my life, and my hair! After straightening my hair every morning for 25 years, I'm now engraving my gorgeous curls and they are complying! Good luck, you have gorgeous long hair ✌🏽

Hibasilisk

I'd get it layered first with medium layers and shorten the lingest layer just a tad to keep some length and release most of the damaged/stetched visible parts, slowly chopping the longest and lower layer off alongside the newer length gradually . Releasing some of the weight in the outer layers may help your hair curl more if you're open to a tussled haircut. Another option is getting it chopped off with some shaping to upkeep a new look entirely as it grows back out :)

JaciOrca

Do it. I never cut my hair short until 2022. I kept my hair very long all my life. I wish I had cut it short when I first considered it about 10 years ago, but I was scared. But I took the plunge and went VERY short. I got many compliments. https://preview.redd.it/uxekt8ljho6d1.jpeg?width=927&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=278384653933e6b139ce0f56593528bb62c2e191 And guess what? I didn’t lose any super powers AND it’s growing back.

blinkblonkbam

YES!!! You’ll love it.

Former-Yam-1519

I’d go just at or above shoulders but not quite bob length

Absinthe_gaze

You’ve got the Irish curly hair

Electrical-Crazy7105

If you’ve only just started taking care of your hair, I wouldn’t chop it just yet. You’d be surprised how much consistent care can revive curl patterns after some time. It took me about a year but i’m glad I didn’t chop mine, i just stayed diligent with my hair care. If after 6 or so months theres no difference then chop it and start fresh

functionalteadrinker

I had to cut my post pregnancy hair to help it get curly again. Has created a general slide towards short hair though, it was boob length a couple of years ago but now it hangs out behind my ears :-D

veglove

I think adding some layers would do wonders for you to add more bounce and volume without having to lose a lot of the overall length if you don't want to go short, although that is another option. You can easily do it at home following a tutorial such as [this one](https://youtu.be/Ok7afmQ7Fss?si=z_or3kUYfujv4I9n) (note: people seem to call it a "wolf cut" but it's just a long layered curly cut).

Khaos6969

Vegetable-Move-7950

To below the collarbone. Keep it longer to elongate your round-shaped face. Some curl management could also give some life to your locks.

bored_mushroom_taken

I kind of see a line in your hair just around collarbone/above the shoulders, where it's like a border between curly and straight. I think it would look great as an A-line lob if you cut it there, and it's not that extreme of a change. Good luck in your hair journey!

Aromatic_Anything_19

I can see your curls doing very well with at least 8 inches removed from the bottom and some layers

wwhispers

I am going through the same but for a different reason. My hair is about 4 inches shorter, I just cut it but last year I was my thyroid meds for over 6 months and since 2021 on OTC that barely kept me from crashing. I tried a cheaper brand of otc but that had none of what I needed and I lost half my hair. I have been back on meds since Halloween 2023 and it still has not grown back yet. Lots of skin showing but I still have a ton of hair. In this photo it looks like lots of hair... https://preview.redd.it/6wtgz97x9q6d1.jpeg?width=768&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=916c18b4d3564b917cc41aa8a601350fde582a51

TKSweeney

Your hair is absolutely beautiful!💖 Think about it thoroughly, everytime I cut my hair, I regret it and end up wanting it to grow back quickly. Maybe just get a shape up, then go from there to see if you really want to lose inches. Also, frizz free shampoo/conditioners like from Redken and hot oil treatments with argan oil will make the curls “pop” more and be less “poofy”.

Crrlygrrl

I cut my very long hair shoulder length some years ago, it was a sad moment, lol - but what a difference! Healthy, beautiful curls. Now it’s very long again, but the “extreme” cut seemed to have done the trick, got healthy curls now. So definitely- yes, cut it shoulder length! 🫶

MysticalCubes

Honestly I think shoulder length would look so good on you! I say go for it, plus way less to wash

Dwillow1228

You need a good cut to revive those curls. The weight is bring them down

Go for it! I just got mine cut off less than am hour ago (it wasn't as long as yours, but 4 years of growing since I last had it short) I can't wait for my curls to come back after being weighed down so long!

Odd_Drawer_1144

Do what makes you happy. Rely less on what others think of you 💛

I_do-declare

No i like it, you look good with long hair

auntiesoda

No don’t do it! Trim about 2-3 inches. Opt for a leave in conditioner. Join the curly hair community. Try curly girl method. Life changing. I chopped off all my hair and hated it.

Num_no

I've tried the curly girl method and still use it to some degree. I've been lurking in the curly community for years now. I agree the curly girl method is really helpful.

theswiftieava

Keep it Chappell roan length

OutrageousAd5338

Yes... medium layers

bogeymanbear

Oh my god I thought this said "should I chop my head off" and wondered where the hell I ended up. You could definitely see if a shoulder length haircut is more fitting for you/better for your curls

Runner_Pelotoner_415

If you cut off the wavy parts (most of your hair). Your hair will look much curlier and much shorter (like Annie but the grown up very fashionable version!). That is a highly personal decision that should not be left to the wonderful people on Reddit. You can start with a trim and cut gradually or cut short and enjoy watching your hair grow out curlier! Doing nothing and just doing the curly girl method is also an option. I did this by the way and now really love my curly hair which looks about 50% longer when straightened. It feels like having the best of both worlds e.g. short and long hair.

Keegzster

Maybe a length inbetween of that in photos, maybe just a little trim like maybe two inches? I love long hair and I have long hair, but sometimes getting a little cut helps you feel confident and gives you something “new” while keeping hair healthy :)

Dry_Dragonfruit9945

Try a curly cut! Get a few layers thrown in there and it’ll get that volume and curls popping

FaithlessnessTight48

It depends on how short you want to go and how much effort you want to put into it. Above your shoulders and left alone you might look like Roseanne Roseannadanna. But if you wanted to you could cut it short and wear a fro. If you want a sleek bob, you’ll spend a LOT of time drying and straightening it and then hoping you don’t sweat or it doesn’t rain. I love your curls—my mess is neither straight nor curly.

AutoModerator

Hi there! I'm a bot, and I noticed you used the phrase "afro" or "fro". You may or may not already know this, but the term “Afro” refers to a specific hairstyle created with specific techniques. The term is often mis-used, so we just want to share some of the meaning/history so everyone can choose the best words for their situation. TL;DR: [The afro has a long and important history, including as a symbol of the Civil Rights movement](https://www.reddit.com/r/curlyhair/comments/sr4x3p/black_history_month_at_rcurlyhair/). This may or may not apply to you, but we try to steer people away from using the Afro descriptor if you don't have Black/Afro-textured hair. It's often portrayed as a condition to fix rather than a cultural style. We hope that's not the case here, but just something to be aware of going forward! We recognize that there are many different opinions on what can and cannot be called an afro. For the purposes of this sub and making sure we reserve space for Black folks, we ask those who don’t have afro-textured hair to choose other words. If your hair doesn't fit that description, please edit your post 1) to be more accurate, 2) to be culturally respectful, and 3) to avoid comment removal. Alternate terms to consider: puffy, poofy, fluffy, etc. Thanks & wishing you many great curly, coily, kinky hair days! *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. I straighten my hair maybe once a year if I get bored. Otherwise I love my curls and wear them proudly whether styled or not. If I were to do a bob it'd probably be layered.

makeupnerd221

off topic but u look like chappell roan <3

foxaroundtown

Yes.

atlantis1021

I can understand why that would be an option. When I started trying to take better care of my hair and repair my curl pattern, I chopped mine off. It gave me a fresh place to start from and it was less work than fixing hair that was damaged and unfixable.

Relevant-Mud-2224

Maybe a trim ?

snawdy

When doing a drastic change I recommend cuts in 4-5” differences. That way you can experiment with length when you have long textured hair.

Mountain-Bee-7163

No don’t cut it , maybe just brush it a little more.

Shawdows85

A hair cut to cut it shorter and in layers and also frame your pretty face.

Next_Support2037

You could take 4-5 inches off (wet) and it still would be considered long. I work at a salon and most our clients are getting bobs. I would keep it long but take the bulk off the bottom. If you want to start low and slow I could show you how to trim your own! I’m not a stylist but have been cutting hair for 12 years now :)

Afrodit999

I think a little longer than shoulder length suits you better en your curls would have more bounce

Accurate_Salary3625

I'd do something like cut into a cute pixie cut. The curls I your hair would look very cute. https://preview.redd.it/f4sfjmw1yl6d1.jpeg?width=1013&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aabba0817f224f883bb0e3f76060898fceef10d6 Example ☝️

LadyGrimSleeper

I believe everyone should shave their hair once, sooooo no better time!

Num_no

I've considered doing a complete shave in the past but I don't think I'm prepared to go all the way.

LadyGrimSleeper

Here is my encouragement, feel free to take it or leave it. The whole point of shaving your head is to dive head first into detaching your self worth from your appearance. I won’t lie, the vast majority of us (me included) don’t look great with a shaved head. But the freedom that comes with breaking from the societal expectations and being able to carry yourself through the change is unlike anything else I’ve done. When you get the “wild hair”, I can’t recommend it highly enough. Best of luck with your hair journey! Whatever you do was meant to be :) ETA: it’s so weird/fun I’m doing it again next month!

Num_no

No I don't use a leave in. I do usually style and brush through while wet. I didn't in the second picture though. I usually plop for a little while and then air dry.

Leilanee

I just recently went from your length to shoulder-length and I HATE it and regret it so much. Although to be fair, I didn't ask for that much chopped off, I just wanted layers...

Num_no

I have a friend who is a licensed cosmetologist but every time I tell her what I want she blunt cuts about two inches off the very bottom and calls it a day. I hate it when stylists don't listen to what was asked for

hEYiTSbEEEE

This is what every stylist I've ever gone to my entire life has done. Until about 6ish months ago when I found a stylist who specializes in curly cuts and its changed my life I swear, haha.

Banner307

No! A shoulder length bob is so generic and boring. I despise that length hair. Rock those long curls!

Ok-Storage8633

No, don’t let these people convince you to look like a man

Natural_Buddy4573

No. Do not cut ur hair. Use better products

Outrageous-Carob-236

you should chop your exes dick off
