If it's the actual derailleur it might be a bit more than $20 to repair/replace it (maybe $30-40?), but I think it's more likely it's the derailleur hanger, which would be a $20-25 fix. Either way, it should be a fairly cheap, easy fix.

MantraProAttitude

We would need to know what “the part” is. I kinda find it hard to believe that Dick’s didn’t want the bike back.

OneAthlete9001

I googled this and it looks like the bent part is called a rear derailleur.

MantraProAttitude

If it’s just the derailleur then a new $20 derailleurand labor should fix it and make it sellable.

OneAthlete9001

That's encouraging. Maybe I will take it to a shop and have them fix it so I can sell it with a clean conscience.

OneAthlete9001

We went through corporate because the local Dick's wouldn't give us our money back.

MantraProAttitude

That is excellent!! I realize you don’t know bikes but can you do a Google search of “mtb blowout diagram?” Maybe if you can find the part name we can give an idea on how to sell of fix the bike.

Beginning-Smell9890

I'd take it to a bike shop and let them diagnose it before making a decision. If the broken part is a safety issue, don't sell it as is though. That would be a shitty thing to do. If you really just want to be rid of it, look for a local bike co-op and donate it.

Bill__Q

This option. At least find out what the problem is and the cost. Maybe it's a cheap fix and the bike will be fine.

OneAthlete9001

Wouldn't want to rip someone off or anything. My thought was to be up front that it had a broken part before selling.

Beginning-Smell9890

That's fine, but I don't think you should sell it at all if it's unsafe. Just because someone is will to buy it doesn't mean you should sell it to them

The derailur hangar where it attaches to the bike is usually designed to bend before the actual derailur will. If the bike is aluminum and has a replaceable derailur hanger, then that is cheap and easy to replace. If the bike is steel and the frame is bent where the derailur attaches, then it can be bent back to straight, unless its really badly bent. Bike shops used to do that all the time. There is even a special tool for it [https://www.parktool.com/en-us/blog/repair-help/rear-derailleur-hanger-alignment](https://www.parktool.com/en-us/blog/repair-help/rear-derailleur-hanger-alignment) The real problem is that Dick's employees just aren't good at assembling and adjusting bikes (or just don't care). If you can fix it for potentially a $20 part then I would just fix it and ride it.

ukexpat

2 would be my advice. Not worth paying a shop to fix it and I doubt a bike shop would buy a Dick’s bike from you to resell.

OneAthlete9001

This is sort of what I was thinking.

gesis

If they reimbursed you fully, buy a new bike and see if there's a local bike co-op to donate the broken one to. They'll fix it up and get it to someone who might not be able to afford one.
