It's not about the straw, it's about the lid. People don't want to worry about spills when they have a drink on the go. And in cinemas and event venues, no lid drinks would be a shitshow to clean up.
I say we make the cup paper instead.
Whenever someone says "just drink out of the cup" it makes me wonder if they've never been in a car at any point in their life.
edit: Yes I'm aware that sippy cup coffee lids exist. Those are **still lids**. We're talking about how cups need **lids**.
I'm talking about the people that say "just drink out of the cup normally, why do you need a straw".
The answer is because cups need lids, be it the straw kind or the coffee sippy cup kind.
I've got a metal thermos style cup with a BPA free straw in my car.
I used to feel self conscious taking it into convenience stores to refill it with water.
But I've gotten to where I'm comfortable taking it into fast-casual restaurants with me (places like Qdoba and CoreLife) for water instead of using their cup and straw.
It bugs me that drive thrus won't fill it for me though.
Yeah annoying that drive thrus won't fill it up, but I can see why restaraunts wouldn't like the idea of people bringing in reusable water bottles. Broke high school teens would 100% try to fill up "water bottles" with soda.
Unless you drive for literal hours every day i'm sure you can have your drink before or after driving
Even on longer trips i just drink from my water bottle whenever i stop to a traffic light or whatever, it's not that hard
Haven't some places used like a wax paper cup? I don't know if it still uses a plastic layer, but I've seen them decompose within a reasonable time frame
It really has nothing to do with straws besides a feel good thing. Corporations could vastly cut down on plastic or switch to some other materials but they don’t want to.
Listen.. Drinking with straws just feel special ya know?
Like we drink water from glass, but now you’re watching some movie with some cola.. using a straw just hits differently
And iced coffee. I mean like freddo espresso/freddo cappuccino, not the ice-cream ones (Well maybe them too I guess) . I'd rather not have a ton of ice on my lips each time I take a small sip
You might say they deepthroat a robo C0CK... (not Sorry)
Yeah my parents always gave me that fear whenever i was with something like a straw and was walking fast so yeah not pretty at all
I wonder what it's like to be able to drink tap water without having to boil it vigorously for several minutes before letting it cool, then putting it through a filter.
I'd do that if they have a chilled option instead of just iced and hot. I want a cold drink without the ice. Also how the fuck am I suppose to suck up boba without a straw?
How expensive would they be to cultivate? I imagine the physical footprint would probably be a lot larger than that of the factories required for plastic straws.
Are they biodegradable like you need expensive chemical processes or are they actually biodegradable in I can throw these in the compost without issue?
Not critiquing, I'm actually curious.
This is kinda where my head went. For a while I was buying compostable plastic trash bags and they would break down in a couple weeks in my compost pile. Like an eco friendly straw doesn’t have to last a whole lot longer than a paper straw to be much more user friendly.
>Our products are made from sugarcane bagasse, coffee grounds, bamboo, rice husk, tea residue and other plant-based waste.
>Renouvo products are compostable; some are even home compostable. When you use a Renouvo product, you directly reduce waste and damage to our environment.
>Our products have been certified by Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI). Compostable, no chemicals added.
Indeed their site does. Don’t know that they sound like something you’d want to eat but they are apparently compostable.
PLA takes forever to compost in a regular compost heap. It needs industrial composting temperatures - they're about 30 degrees fahrenheit higher (170 vs 140). It does break down under sunlight, though.
You can eat these, but they're not that tasty.. are you talking about like, twizzlers where you chomp off either end? Or other foods you make straws from?
Remember seeing it quite a bit. It's an excellent straw, only major drawback being crunchy instead, so pretty easy to break comparing to both plastic and paper straw.
Though for the environment I can learn to stop wrestling with straws
Glass and metal straws always end up making me nervous about chipping a tooth or cracking it and swallowing glass. I’ll use a paper straw if I don’t plan to have a lot to drink. I usually have it drank by the time the paper starts to degrade. Otherwise, I’ll drink from the glass itself.
Bamboo and pasta straws are also some nice alternatives imo.
Yeah if someone bumps you from behind a glass or metal straw is gonna perforate the back of your throat fantastically.
I just drink from the cup or whatever as really wtf is the point of a straw? It’s original purpose was to sieve out crap from liquids like old school beers which had sediment you didn’t want to stir up into the liquid but has no purpose other wise.
I rest my paper straw on top of the cup, and I ly I sert it to drink. Lasts the whole meal that way. If you have a cup with a lid then you can pull the straw up until it's out of the drink.
Straws made from dried pasta, aka semolina.
Pressed wood or plant fiber often contains glue that is anything else than healthy and often not biodegradable.
There's those biodegradable plant fiber ones that at least don't dissolve in real time, but then if u bite them a little too hard it breaks and loses suction.
It would be cool to see these in places… hemp breaks down and doesn’t go limp like paper.
Good ole weed saves the day!!
https://www.hemptraders.com/P-STRAW1-p/p-straw1.htm
I've never had a problem with paper straws getting too soft. I tend to finish my drink within an hour. I can see it getting mushy after more than an hour maybe but idk what kind of paper straws you're using that fall apart in 5 minutes. I think they usually have some kind of wax coating or something so they don't get soft quickly. I actually prefer paper straws because I like the feeling of it in my mouth more than the plastic ones.
There's a fastfood chain near me that sells all their drinks with strawless lids. Sure it's probably a money saving Tactic, but it's also less straws, so win?

How about you just drink straight from the fuckin' glass
What, like an animal?!
It's not about the straw, it's about the lid. People don't want to worry about spills when they have a drink on the go. And in cinemas and event venues, no lid drinks would be a shitshow to clean up. I say we make the cup paper instead.

have you not seen coffee cups that don’t come straws?
I'm talking about the people that say "just drink out of the cup normally, why do you need a straw". The answer is because cups need lids, be it the straw kind or the coffee sippy cup kind.
that’s fair,
I've never drank from a cup in a car at any point in my life.

There's lids that have little openings to sip through, why don't they use those? A lot of coffee places have them
Unless you drive for literal hours every day i'm sure you can have your drink before or after driving Even on longer trips i just drink from my water bottle whenever i stop to a traffic light or whatever, it's not that hard

Bro hasnt seen a sippy cup in their life
Nahh not the paper cups. It’s already hard enough dealing with the current ones when they start leaking. Or maybe it’s just me.. yh just me.
It really has nothing to do with straws besides a feel good thing. Corporations could vastly cut down on plastic or switch to some other materials but they don’t want to.
I like the starbucks alternatives they've started rolling out that are just like a coffee cup lid.
Listen.. Drinking with straws just feel special ya know? Like we drink water from glass, but now you’re watching some movie with some cola.. using a straw just hits differently
No can do Chief I use a home made carved wood straw Makes me feel fancy
Milkshake and smoothies are often way too chunky to drink straight from the cup/glass.
And iced coffee. I mean like freddo espresso/freddo cappuccino, not the ice-cream ones (Well maybe them too I guess) . I'd rather not have a ton of ice on my lips each time I take a small sip
But boba tea without boba straw is not the same :(((
Or metal straw
Just dont use it while walking. There’s people who slipped while sipping through metal straws and it wasn’t pretty
You might say they deepthroat a robo C0CK... (not Sorry) Yeah my parents always gave me that fear whenever i was with something like a straw and was walking fast so yeah not pretty at all
You can swear on here. Just type "cock."
ROBO COCK
Gotta admit I'm a bit scared of metal straws.
I like to pour my drink in a bowl and lick it
Found the khajiit.
Frozen drinks like slushies and thick shakes are much easier to drink through a straw.
Drinking with a straw is better for your teeth
Then you have to dodge ice cubes and stuff
Slurpee
better yet, straight from the tap (we got clean tap water here)
I wonder what it's like to be able to drink tap water without having to boil it vigorously for several minutes before letting it cool, then putting it through a filter.
Ooh we have mr Big Boy here
My milkshake and slush? Noooooo thanks.
Hard to drink a milkshake from the glass without making a mess
Skip the glass, drink straight from the dispenser/container.
What about boba tea what about carton drinks
How about you shut the duck up
I'd do that if they have a chilled option instead of just iced and hot. I want a cold drink without the ice. Also how the fuck am I suppose to suck up boba without a straw?
Why waste glass if you can just drink straight from puddle?
If there's ice or the drink is too cold, it hurts my teeth. I imagine it's the same for others
What if my drink has whipped cream in it?
Sensitive teeth are sensitive.
Really doesn’t work with ice. Which I actually prefer no ice by the corporations want to water down our beverages to save a couple cents.
Why waste resources making cups? How about you just drink straight from your fuckin' hands
If they stopped making straws today, it would be months, if not years, before I ever even noticed them missing.
It’s the ice that’s the problem for me. If there’s ice in the drink I want a straw so I’m not constantly spitting ice back into the glass.
Plasticstraw - Plastic = Straw How about using normal ordinary straw again.
Like dried grass? Sure, if it works. It is the most eco friendly version
I'm really curious as to how well it works actually.
[удалено]
How expensive would they be to cultivate? I imagine the physical footprint would probably be a lot larger than that of the factories required for plastic straws.
Apparently a byproduct from wheat production, so no appreciable land requirements at the current scale.
like that`s why they are called straws iirc
They exist! And they're good, they don't melt like the paper ones. The ones I had on my iced coffee were wheat stems. Simple yet effective.
I went to a coffee shop in Oregon that did this. It was interesting
Actually reminds me of a cafe which used hollowed out straws that looked like tiny bamboo. It's possible for sure.
https://sugarcanestraw.com/vancouver-bylaw-no-pla-sugarcane-drinking-straws/ These straws feel like plastic, but are biodegradable, they're awesome.
I love these straws, so few places use them.
Are they biodegradable like you need expensive chemical processes or are they actually biodegradable in I can throw these in the compost without issue? Not critiquing, I'm actually curious.
You can eat them! I'm pretty sure you can just toss them in the compost, although I'm sure the website I linked has the details you're looking for
This is kinda where my head went. For a while I was buying compostable plastic trash bags and they would break down in a couple weeks in my compost pile. Like an eco friendly straw doesn’t have to last a whole lot longer than a paper straw to be much more user friendly.

it degrades by itself. Source: I used to have some and I put them in the drawer for too long
Can confirm, just drank a smoothie with one. Worked perfectly.
What about eatable straws? Best of all worlds.
You can eat these, but they're not that tasty.. are you talking about like, twizzlers where you chomp off either end? Or other foods you make straws from?
Red vines make great straws! Can't stand twizzlers though. Aren't they solid cored anyway?
For parties we sometimes bought eatable straws. They tasted like sweet lemons
interesting, i think i'm gonna look into this
Agave straws work well too!
Remember seeing it quite a bit. It's an excellent straw, only major drawback being crunchy instead, so pretty easy to break comparing to both plastic and paper straw. Though for the environment I can learn to stop wrestling with straws
I have bamboo straws, they work fantastically.
I have glass and metal, they are both very good but I prefer the glass because it's not as tough on the teeth
Bamboo and pasta straws are also some nice alternatives imo.
uhhhh why are you biting the straw?
Not from biting! Just a general fear that as I’m going for a drink it’ll hit a tooth lol
I have some metal straws but with a rubber top so it's not hard on the teeth and can't stab you, would recommend, they're quite easy to wash as well
I rest my paper straw on top of the cup, and I ly I sert it to drink. Lasts the whole meal that way. If you have a cup with a lid then you can pull the straw up until it's out of the drink.
Call the doctor. I just had a stroke.
I can hlep. I jsut nede oyu ot tasy lacm nad berathe.
That’s just too much work, and as someone else pointed out I don’t want to do that while driving
A fellow phone typer I see!
Straws made from dried pasta, aka semolina. Pressed wood or plant fiber often contains glue that is anything else than healthy and often not biodegradable.
But what if I’m drinking boiling water? The straw gets limp…
“Glued plant fiber” Paper with extra steps You can use natural glues but that would be a cardboard straw ig.
Plywood straws
Now with more sawdust!
Noodles
The bamboo ones are great
Paper straws with microplastics in them
Rice straws
I love traveling to the USA and having plastic bags and straws back.
I miss plastic bags and I'm in the US. Stupid NY.
Straw straw?
We have. Agave straws are fucking bomb. Made from the byproduct of making tequila, so win-win.
Agave straws
Wax paper staws
Drink faster
How about we make it a tradition to get your kid one good reusable cup when they're born and pass it down through families.
Metal. Can be melted and remade into something else once you are done. Just gotta clean it well.
Bamboo straws would the medium
There are those agave straws I've used that are pretty neat
Paper straws: I won’t last through this drink…
Slurp it through a reed
There's those biodegradable plant fiber ones that at least don't dissolve in real time, but then if u bite them a little too hard it breaks and loses suction.
Plastic... Paper... **Plaster?**
Glass, bamboo, metal, hard plastic, wood
Bro, Just use long macaroni/bucatini

Cardboard straws? ( or just keep reusable straws in your car I guess)
Me vs the guy she told me not to worry about
Maybe just recycle the plastic straws
5 minutes is a stretch
How about biodegradable plastic straws? Or bioplastic straws? Or wax straws? Bamboo straws? Hemp straws?
Spaget straws
Bamboo :)
The fact that plastic straws last 500 years is the problem:p
Plaper
5mins, that shit disintegrates within seconds of touching any liquid, did yours get a durability patch upgrade?
Fiberglass straws
Leather straw
Metal Straws ?
I've never had an issue with paper straws. Are yall munching on them or something?
Laminated straws
What about seaweed or bamboo?
Cotton straws
It would be cool to see these in places… hemp breaks down and doesn’t go limp like paper. Good ole weed saves the day!! https://www.hemptraders.com/P-STRAW1-p/p-straw1.htm
Metal straw. It would be reusable like silverware, you can just take one with you wherever you go.
Bamboo straws work so well Or drinking from the glass
I’ve heard they’re doing shit with plants now
the fuck kinda paper straws do you get that last that long?
Steel or glass reusable straws
S T E E L
freeze the liquid and consume it in solid form like a real man
pasta straw, lasts 3 weeks
Those again packed in plastic packs
restaurants could just introduce reusable straws. you know, metal or glass. but they don't want to clean those
Just made straws out of hemp
I use bamboo straws
I wish I was a paper straw
Bamboo straws
Just make paper straws out of plastic Simple
Bamboo straws
Bio-plastic straws, they're a bit rough, but they last in any drink, and are biodegradable
I saw that Italy has again developed a perfect solution; pasta straws!! Durable, last enough to drink, and edible!!
Wax
I've never had a problem with paper straws getting too soft. I tend to finish my drink within an hour. I can see it getting mushy after more than an hour maybe but idk what kind of paper straws you're using that fall apart in 5 minutes. I think they usually have some kind of wax coating or something so they don't get soft quickly. I actually prefer paper straws because I like the feeling of it in my mouth more than the plastic ones.
Bamboo straws or focus on making a plastic eating organism to clean the planet.
Take an old magazine page, wrap it up nice and tight. Use a tiny piece of tape so it stays in shape. Should last you hours
Pasta straws
Uranium straws so the user lasts 5 minutes. Cut out the middle man
They still last longer than me :(
Glass straw.
once had a warning on a (plastic) packaging for a paper straw: "straw dissolves in drink." What, am I supposed to drink the straw?
https://www.haystraws.com
500 minutes.
Since rich people fly in private jets and airlines flew empty planes during the pandemic to keep their routes, I want my plastic straws back
Something something hemp
Collapsible metal straw
Asbestos straw
Like a candy straw, that you can eat afterwards.
This showed up right before the same showerthoughts in my feed, lol.
From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. Metal straws are just better.
Bamboo
Bamboo?
There's a fastfood chain near me that sells all their drinks with strawless lids. Sure it's probably a money saving Tactic, but it's also less straws, so win?
Oh the PFAS that they put in those stupid fucking paper straws will last long enough.
Bamboo straw
Seriously, get a metal or glass straw. Best part: You can put them in the freezer and have a cold sip even if the drink is warm.
Drinking from the rim is superior
Seems I'm kind of an ambientalist
When I was little, I always thought straws are for kids and like specific needs (My mom used straws when she has lipsticks, etc.). I was pretty surprised to see adults sipping drinks with straws when I first come to the US. I would never imagined straws would be such big of a problem when you can just...use your mouth.
Actual straw or reeds would be good imo...
Plapper straws
This does nothing to repair the damage from printing weapons and tanks. Paper straws are bullshit.
metal straws which will last 3 weeks and giv3 you titinus
We should either use bamboo or bioplastic or just reusable metal or glass.
It's called just having your own reusable straw
Metal straw- will literally pierce your brain and give you a free lobotomy but I’m recyclable yay! Just don’t slip.
Metal straws?
"I will ban plastic straws to save ocean wildlife. Here, have a paper straw for your plastic cup and plastic lid."
bamboo straws
Just ditch straws altogether for most drinks imo. Reusable metal straws for things like bubble tea and iced cappuccinos. Sippy cups for everything else
a 50 year straw is what we need
Here is your alternative —> sayhaystraws.nl
Metal Straws have been around for ages and theyre great unless you bump your teeth into them
Glass straws, bamboo, metal, rice, sugarcane, reusable/recyclable plastic, silicone, agave,
You could bring your own metal straw if you really need one.
Just give everyone a pvc pipe. The ones under the sink break at fun times
Metal straws:
\*I *won't* last 5 minutes.
