The minute you could spend coming up with a new topic isn’t awkward online, and since it’s usually easier/more common to be doing something else while talking online the next topic is easier to find.

It’s actually the reverse for me. Even though I’m an introvert, I’m pretty lively around my friends. But I’ve developed the habit of texting very robotically because of the number of times my mom’s gotten mad at me over a perceived tone in a text lol
Yes it's because when you're at home texting you're usually doing something else which engages so that you don't have to think about making conversation. But when you're in person, you're usually pressured in a sense to make conversation and your mind goes blank. Try doing some activities with your friend when hanging out. Becomes easier. Same thing for first dates too.
