I don't like what happened to Jon but he broke his oath first by giving Stannis counsel, then by marrying a Thenn to a Kharstark, then by ordering the troops south to deal with the Boltons. These were all good things, but he broke his oath nonetheless. He should've seen it coming and had loyal guards around him at all times, considering that pro-Lannister plus anti-freefolk sentiment is strong among many in the watch.
