This analysis should probably be normalized by total words per album, especially if this is considering the TTPD double album.

hatramroany

This also excludes the songs from rereleased albums even though it uses their images on some older original albums

NKD_WA

Can we get a chart based on data from /r/dataisbeautiful that shows the number of posts that are about Taylor Swift?

Alarmed_Audience513

I don't think we can count that high

JPAnalyst

This is just a copy of this one https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/s/pUR1oEKFqY

sevillista

But this one adds unnecessary strikethroughs, highlights, background doodles, inconsistent censorship, and grammatical errors to make it more beautiful.

XyleneCobalt

God I wish there was a way to filter out all posts with the words "Taylor Swift" in them

alexquacksalot

The colors are a bit rough on the eyes unfortunately, good work though

Modesto96

It really bothers me that evermore is placed before folklore hahaha instead of by release date?? Edit: it definitely seems like it was done intentionally to make it be a pretty curve, but folklore came first and the graph needs to reflect that in my opinion

hatramroany

OP swapped the album art on the two but the data is actually in the correct place chronologically

Modesto96

Oh wow, thanks for letting me know! Super funny with how the graph ends up looking then

letsfastescape

I have to say this is a pretty loose definition of profanity.

SanSilver

Damn, goddamn and hell aren\`t profanity for me.

letsfastescape

Agreed, and pissed‽ I wouldn’t consider whore as profanity either. It’s derogative for sure, but I wouldn’t say it’s profane. Even dickhead seems borderline to me as it’s it a pretty benign insult like idiot or moron. Ass loses a lot of emphasis when not paired with hole.

OogieBoogieJr

Travis Kelce is a bad influence!

Argyle892

Oh my! *clutches pearls* A couple conservative moms attempting to gatekeep for their kids once again makes the news. Yawn.

bguzewicz

Holy smokes, she says 57 swears??

mr_ji

She could fart into a mic for 12 tracks at this point and still make a billion dollars for it. More realistically, though, her core fans are aging and I don't doubt there's been careful analysis done that determines exactly how much she should be swearing to resonate with her audience along with what swearing is most effective.

devadander23

Might be the first album of her’s I’d buy

askmagoo

Dont do it.

the_mellojoe

May I ask (since this isn't the first time I've seen this brought up), why is this being discussed? Is there some kind of movement or campaign or something? Has she said anything about these albums? I dont think I've ever seen a musician's albums ranked by swear words before. It's fascinating to see it happening now. I get that she's a mega star, disrupted the industry, and apparently there was some push back from a political nature about her being part of the celebrity "get out and vote" movement. Is this also part of that? i admit I'm out of the loop as I'm not a fan of her music nor do I have anyone in my house who is, so I'm not sure what's going on

Kfernandz

Thanks for asking. I find data like this fascinating, but I've seen this being part of a larger conversation. It seems that because of her impact on younger girls, particularly those between 7 and 12, the increase in profanity in her lyrics has moms concerned. The controversy has sparked a debate on the Facebook group [Taylor Swift’s Vault,](https://www.facebook.com/groups/2254218764714763/posts/3152206408249323/) where a mom warned other members about the excessive profanity in the album saying: “Most parents are not going to deem this album appropriate.”   The comment has generated nearly 2,000 likes and over 1,300 comments - with many moms revealing they are trying to "shield" their kids from the many swear words in Taylor’s latest album, but it's, of course, not an easy task. “Taylor isn’t for the little girls anymore,” said one of the concerned moms. Hope this gives context.

mayormcskeeze

Serious question: what's with all the interest with how much taylor swift swears? I've never seen this with literally any other artist

Many-Birthday12345

As usual, the more someone is “proper”, the more scandalous it seems when they act “improper”. She doesn’t do WAP levels of explicit behavior, she’s not a pedo or drug addict, and even treats her employees well—so now, you’re left with an artist that doesn’t really “act out” compared to other celebs. The moment she swears, some people faint from shock.

Cykul

Because a huge chunk of her fans are kids.

mayormcskeeze

That's true for so many artists tho.

Cykul

None of whom have the platform/influence that miss t swizzle does. She's got reach, so it matters.

jamisobdavis

As an artist with the significant following of teens and even preteens I think this is absolutely reprehensible Taylor is an example to millions and she knows it and I think that her complete lack of mindfulness of how much influence she has is it tribute to how much she has lost touch

Kfernandz

Methodology: Using Ofcom’s official guide of offensive words on TV and radio, we compiled a list of 202 swear words, categorized as ‘mild,’ ‘moderate,’ or ‘strong,’ based on how offensive they are to the general public. Using Genius we scrapped the lyrics of all Taylor Swift songs for each of her 11 albums, including the recently released “The Tortured Poets Department.” We then calculated the number of swear words, including all variations of the word present per song, per album, and per year to identify how profanity has evolved in Taylor Swift’s discography and the most profane songs, albums, and most used curse words in Taylor Swift’s discography history. We also calculated the swear word ratio per song. Words such as "damn" and "damned" were all categorized under the same seed word, such as "damn," for simplicity.

Interesting-Trick696

Why did you scrap lyrics? Hell, how did you scrap lyrics? They've already been released.

Readonkulous

“everything is sacred, nothing is profane. And money is something that you throw off of the back of a train”

Kat121

And who the fuck cares? She is a grown ass woman and can write and say whatever the hell she wants. She isn’t a Disney pop princess who owes us wholesome content for 6 year olds.

PM___ME___ASS

It's just an observation? I think it's fascinating

quasar_1618

I don’t think it’s particularly surprising given that she was thirteen when she released her first album.

invertedeparture

Chill. As a parent I found this interesting and it's part of my job description to look out for my children. Apparently T swift is very popular with the kids at school and it is beneficial to be informed. No one is saying she can't put out whatever music she wants to.

DiarrheaDreamz

"I must look out for my children. Those fucks and shits may scar them for life 🤡"

invertedeparture

I don't blame you for not understanding.

Kat121

So buy the clean versions of her albums and then talk to your girls about the double standards that women face. Anyone make an infographic about Justin Timberlake’s vocabulary? Anyone ever call out all the pedo creepers who sing about teenage girls? Jon Bon Jovi is being talked about recently because he whored around for YEARS with groupies *while married*, but nobody makes jokes about his love life. It’s the double standard that pisses me off.

invertedeparture

Thats a great idea to buy the clean versions. I don't see any negativity in the infographic, looks like an innocent representation of some data. What people rake from that is up to them. Personally, I think she shouldn't bend to anyone who tries to tell her what to sing and respect the fact that she isn't afraid to push boundaries. That being said, it's still good to know what's going on. I would not have known to look for the clean version without this info.

Kat121

But do we hate the bad language because it’s bad language? Or because it’s a *woman* having bad language? My response was deliberately vulgar to bring home the point that we see profanity everywhere but only complain about it when we are taking potshots at a successful *female* artist. She may be popular with children, but she is writing songs about heartbreak and trauma and patriarchy and a lot of adult themes wherein “fuck” is absolutely the right word choice. Snoop Dogg has an album for kids with some cute songs about being proud of yourself. Nobody comes at him for the recreational drug use, casual sex, misogynistic lyrics in the bulk of his work, nor do they insist on policing his future albums just because children like some of his songs. If you hate a thing when a woman does it, but not when a man does it, it is not the thing you dislike or want to control *but women*. And by “thing” you may substitute be single, have sex, be loud, have opinions, use vulgarity, make money, decide to be child-free, or whatever else you’re considering.

invertedeparture

I think I see what you're saying, but for me it has nothing to with the sex of the artist. I don't think young kids should be using vulgar language, so I am going to try and limit the exposure to it. Of course, I know they will hear it but they will know what I think is appropriate for them. I'm all for her sending messages and exposing the harsh realities, but I feel there is an appropriate age to hear/endorse these things. Just my opinion.

Kat121

Cool, so we agree that adult women have no obligation to cater to children, they can write about adult topics using whatever language they want, and that it is up to the parents to monitor their children. Glad we could chat.

sweetteatime

Did OP say anything bad about her choice of words or did OP just make an observation?

BasonPiano

Right but she knows that those 10 year old girls are idolizing her and hanging on her every word. She may have done the more artistic thing, but not the most responsible thing.

the_mellojoe

the fact that the worst she is doing is using "bad" language is such a welcome relief, compared to other child stars trying to "shed their disney look" There should be zero push back on this particular artist (and I'm not even a fan of her or her music) for this particular album. We're really going to call her out for using grown up language, considering her fan base has also grown up with her? She's 30+ years old at this point, making records for the past 15+ years. Think of all the other child stars who grew up and exploded (or imploded). A few bad words is nothing.

DiarrheaDreamz

So she has to keep clean language because kids may be listening? Who fucking cares.

BasonPiano

Parents maybe?

DiarrheaDreamz

Because swearing corrupts children.

slimetraveler

Not your place man.. especially on this subject matter, but it's really safer to just not criticize Taylor Swift for any reason altogether. It's like when some female Olympic swimmer criticized the toughness of a baseball player who slid foot first into home plate. Not her place. And men are guilty of it way more often.
