Skateboard companies did it with popular logos like crazy for a while. I imagine this was almost the reverse situation with Dickies being so popular among skaters, and presumably the band as well from their style of dressing.
Definitely a 90s thing, bands would take a well known logo and put their name on it.

They used this logo for a little while in 1994 and 1995. Dickies threatened them with legal action so they gave away all remaining items containing the logo for free at a show.

I made myself one of these t-shirts back in 1999 on Microsoft paint, it took me literally DAYS to do what photoshop could do in an hour and what AI can do in seconds. No regrets, they're still my favorite band!
