Totally. Most people don’t travel with their kids — and for many reasons. But I’m also a parent of young children and in our experience it’s not been that hard to travel with them. Just takes a little more time and prep, of course. I find it to be a pleasure — and a gift to the kids — to be able to travel as a family. The positives far outweigh any challenges, IMO.
Absolutely. I just went on vacation to Denver with our family and the flights were fun. My little people just require more attention than some random seat-mate, that’s all. Totally worthwhile. I always get pictures of them looking out of the window. Totally makes my day to look at those months afterward.
My husband used to call it a family vacation and I’d correct him saying it was a family trip. He’d say what’s the difference? I’d say a vacation is when I’m not with my kids. It was so nice to not have to be in Mom mode while traveling and they were both well behaved.
Yes, absolutely this. For the record, I like traveling with my kids. But, for example, during takeoff while alone, I’m enjoying my AirPods and a drink. With kids? Handing out gum to help their ears clear, making sure their electronics are connected and working, making sure my daughter has her motion sickness bracelets on, making sure my son understands what the clunking noises are outside of the plane, and making sure neither of my kids drinks that THIRD cup of soda/water 20 minutes into the flight given to them from a FA with a menacingly knowing grin.
I don’t even bother with my own entertainment because that will generate a whole other issue of explaining what’s on my screen 🤣.
I’m rather fond of Everything Everywhere All at Once. I couldn’t imagine explaining that to my kids at a young age. Haha. I was a stay at home Mom so mom mode was pretty much 24/7. I love my kids, but I cherished my time away. Ironically the majority of my travel now is pestering my grown kids by going to visit them way more than they’d probably like me to.
You can transfer them, but it's expensive. Better option would be booking flights for family members directly from your account.
Selling them is sketchy and against terms of the Skymiles program.
There's such a large fee for transferring that your best bet would be to book on behalf of your family members with your miles.
Selling of miles is prohibited by Delta's T&Cs and if you're caught, you could have your account suspended.
Your comments on here about your family are almost unbelievable. Your family would prefer to pay for their own flights on American than fly Delta for free? You don't trust your 19 year old to travel alone? 19 is an adult.
Your own post mentioned transferring them to a family member and then every comment about just booking the flights out of your account (which has 0 fees) you shoot down. Do you want to book travel for your family or not?
News flash - not all of us grew up in a silver spoon family (assuming yourself) just because it’s beneficial for “family” to travel cheaper, doesn’t mean I need too.
I’d appreciate you as well not to tell me what age is appropriate for my KIDS that live under MY roof to travel alone is. If you have your own ((which I highly doubt from your smug-negative comment)) then you let your kids fly alone at 19.
As far as the post, just because I was inquiring about transferring to a family member, doesn’t mean I’m going too. It was a general question to see all avenues on what I can/can’t do with my sky miles. I hope you have a better day ahead.

Wow, that really sucks doesn’t it? I guess they do this to minimize people selling them surreptitiously? I.e., if you’re just giving them to family, you could simply make the travel arrangements yourself instead of transferring them… something you wouldn’t do with strangers
Just spend the day in Paris. Really. Book D1. Sleep on the plane. Arrive at 7am. Go out and about. Go back to CDG and fly home. Delta also flies frequently enough to London this works there too. Other European destinations might require an overnight stay.
You can always buy a skymiles experience. I’m not sure if they even care if you specifically go. There was an elephant Thailand trip last month. An African safari last month. There are several cruises and nascar events so far, and food experiences.
Why not get a “free” 8k cruise?
If you’re really stumped, donating them to a charity is also an option. Make-a-Wish and St Jude’s, for example, uses them to help critically ill kids and their family members travel.
You can book a flight for a family member!
As others have said, transferring them will negate most of the value, but you can use them for a booking for them made from your account.
Once my dad stopped flying I told brother to use dad’s account to book flights for his own vacation as dad would not be using his own skymiles anymore.. Sent bro dad’s login info so he could book his own flight. Bro did not understand and transferred miles to his own account instead of booking, costing my dad about the same as straight up buying bros tickets would have been, while being without the miles also…
Why not just hold and book a flight for your family member? There’s no fee when booking for someone else. If you were going to transfer to them anyway?
Still a ton of value to be had - You could send someone roundtrip in business class to Europe, or a couple roundtrip in business domestically multiple times.
My family doesn’t prefer Delta, and let’s just say they’re not too deserving of a round trip all inclusive.. it’s harsh I know, but they haven’t been the best family.
By rule, you can’t sell them.
You can “gift” them to “friends” in lieu of reciprocation in other ways.
There’s a lot of “don’t ask, don’t tell” involved. If you trust them not to say they bought/bartered them from you, go for it.
Could look at donating some of those miles to Doctors Without Borders, Make a Wish, or various organizations such as that. You could make a life-changing difference in someone’s journey :)
I know you said you want to give them away and the big trips people are suggesting aren’t for you since you have kids, but maybe a kid adventure if they’re old enough? You can use miles to book a full vacation through the website, maybe take the kids on a trip to Disney with all expenses paid for by your miles, or some other place they want to go.
surely someone reading this post will DM you and propose an "exchange"
in the past i have received similar message responses to posts in this forum. i looked up the ticket they were interested in and priced my miles at 75% of the ticket price. both times they disappeared.
my spouse and i both have skymiles accounts with +1MM. twice, after mentioning that number in a post in this forum, i have received offers for an "exchange".
both had sob stories explaining their need. i asked them when and where they would like to go. i look up both the mileage cost and the cost in dollars. they offered an exchange where i acquire the trip using my miles in their name. i responded with an offer corresponding to \~75% of the dollars price. one buyer suggested i list a postcard on ebay for sale for that amount ($2700) and they would purchase the postcard. i responded with a simple question and they disappeared. the other interested party balked at the price, claiming they have previously completed similar transactions for 50%.
Thanks for the insight, I’m new to Reddit. So not sure how everything works. I was more so hoping to find a marketplace that acts as a middle man, and a friendly user interface. Glad you didn’t go through with them. Sounds sketchy.
If using or transferring doesn't work, I remember they used to have an option to donate them to charity. I always wondered if this helps reduce Delta's tax bill so I was hesitant but it might be an option for you!
One thing to keep in mind if using your skymiles for other people, if they want to sit together they have to be on the same booking/confirmation number! otherwise if the plane gets switched or delayed you might get split up..So gather all your info first, flight numbers, ssn numbers, passport numbers , etc, then book all at once.. I have a lot of skymiles, but nowhere near your amount, like enough to send 2 on a great trip, but there are 3 kids and 2 parents.. H won’t let me book using my skymiles even tho he would have enough to book the rest, because neither of us wants to be stuck in an airport somewhere with a grandchild missing mommy!
This might have been mentioned, yet miles can also be used on Delta Stays to book hotels/cars and what not! So even if it’s the next time you all, or someone, needs a hotel
You could book a Delta One flight somewhere across the world and use half of them easily!
Maybe if I was 20 years younger and no kids, that does sound nice though haha
Why not plan a family vacation?
Some people don’t like traveling with kids. Source: I’m a father of two well-traveling, well-behaved kids and it’s STILL a chore.
Totally. Most people don’t travel with their kids — and for many reasons. But I’m also a parent of young children and in our experience it’s not been that hard to travel with them. I spent 850k on a family trip to Europe on d1. Way worth it
And you and your partner can’t go on a second honeymoon and leave the kids with family?
He’s in hospice, he doesn’t like to take days off. He’s too hard on himself.
Even more reason! I think you can use them to book a domestic delta vacation too if flying with him isn’t an option since he is in hospice.
That’s an easy way to burn out.
You can transfer them, but it's expensive. Better option would be booking flights for family members directly from your account. Selling them is sketchy and against terms of the Skymiles program.
Thank you very much :D
There's such a large fee for transferring that your best bet would be to book on behalf of your family members with your miles. Selling of miles is prohibited by Delta's T&Cs and if you're caught, you could have your account suspended.
Figured, all of my family use American. Didn’t know it was against the T&C - good to know though!

He is fishing for people that want to “exchange.” Very suspicious… brand new account…
I probably wouldn’t even exchange on Reddit. Hence (an established platform) and it’s she by the way. Thanks for the comment investigator gadget.

So the person trying so save money traveling is the one who was born with a silver spoon in their mouths? What?
Hence the words (grew up in)
That doesn’t make sense at all.
What’s the fee for transferring miles?

Just the little ones, and not the best health sadly. Would’ve loved too maybe 20 years ago. Sounds extravagant.
No problem! I understand. They have concerts and festivals also. Like atl has a 6 course chefs table for 20k miles currently
That’s awesome, good to know. That maybe more up our alley. Thank you so much!

If you’re really stumped, donating them to a charity is also an option. Make-a-Wish and St Jude’s, for example, uses them to help critically ill kids and their family members travel.
Didn’t know that! Might donate some, can even use as a write off I believe.
I am active in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and am using some miles for a silent auction item. They’re very popular!
Ooh that’s a good idea too!
You can book a flight for a family member! As others have said, transferring them will negate most of the value, but you can use them for a booking for them made from your account.
I’ve seen it was only a $30 transfer fee. Maybe I read wrong. All is good information though, I appreciate it!
$30 fee PLUS $0.01 per mile. Skymiles aren’t generally worth much more than $0.01 to begin with, so that’s where most of the value goes.
Once my dad stopped flying I told brother to use dad’s account to book flights for his own vacation as dad would not be using his own skymiles anymore.. Sent bro dad’s login info so he could book his own flight. 🤣 and THAT is why there’s still value left for those of us who understand this system!
I’ve seen a couple sites that said they’ll buy at .65% not sure how it all works, oh well.
Why not just hold and book a flight for your family member? There’s no fee when booking for someone else. If you were going to transfer to them anyway? Understood totally.
you can send them my way if you want.
Buy me a D1 ticket to Haneda? Lol
Could look at donating some of those miles to Doctors Without Borders, Make a Wish, or various organizations such as that. You could make a life-changing difference in someone’s journey :)

Thanks for the advice, their in the ranges from 15-19 so don’t really feel too comfortable on them traveling alone.
My friend, let that 19 year old fly! Figuratively and literally. A few weeks in Europe, Central America, Japan, etc, can be life changing.
Have you asked them how *they* feel?
surely someone reading this post will DM you and propose an "exchange" in the past i have received similar message responses to posts in this forum. i looked up the ticket they were interested in and priced my miles at 75% of the ticket price. both times they disappeared.

If using or transferring doesn't work, I remember they used to have an option to donate them to charity. I always wondered if this helps reduce Delta's tax bill so I was hesitant but it might be an option for you!
It wouldn’t. Delta doesn’t own the donated asset, you do. So you’d get the benefit if you can itemize.
This might have been mentioned, yet miles can also be used on Delta Stays to book hotels/cars and what not! So even if it’s the next time you all, or someone, needs a hotel
You could always book a hotel in a city near you for the night, enjoy a night out.
Getpeyd.com They are awesome. And best service.
What did you get out of them? Is it pretty much delta’s same offers?
They buy your points from you. Mail you check. It's not my company nor do I have any benefit in posting about them. Not sure why down voted.
