On a flight from CGL to LAX, a teen behind me basically threw up for 2-3 hours straight. He was not drunk. The flight attendants used coffee grounds to cover up the scent. I don't like coffee, but it was better than vomit scent.

Kitty20996

Coffee grounds absorb odors! There's nitrogen in coffee which helps neutralize smells. Source: am a nurse and use this hack all the time for smelly patient rooms

jfk_47

There was a bag/filter of coffee in the bathroom on my last flight it all makes sense now.

[deleted]

I hate coffee but like the smell

AKnitWit777

Wow, I feel terrible for all of the passengers around him, but mostly that 2 year old (and his other kids, if he has more). Who knows what the kid has already seen and will see with a dad that behaves that way *in public*.

triessohard

Yup. Dad’s got a problem. Maybe this is a rock bottom moment for him.

bfgvrstsfgbfhdsgf

Rock bottom at 30000 feet?

DonkeyKong694NE1

Sounds like he’s got a book to write

SufficientAnalyst383

That's the perfect title.

jfk_47

Bet it’s a normal Sunday.

wkdravenna

he's 30,000 ft on Delta over the Pacific. You act like he can't get up in an allegiant.

Feeling-AMD

Recently on a flight with Delta where they overserved someone behind me. He ended up trying to use the restroom during our descent then getting mad when he was told over the intercom to return to his seat. Honestly a little scary how the FA didn’t notice he was already pretty tipsy when he boarded. Adding 5 IPAs to the mix wasn’t going to help sober him up.

JumpyImpression1311

that sounds like a nightmare! Drunk guy causing chaos, throwing up, and his family just ignoring it while the whole plane suffers for the next 6 hours. Definitely a reminder to pace yourself with the in flight drinks

lunch22

This guy’s problem seems like more than not pacing himself. If OP is posting in real time, it’s only about 7 on the flight. The guy got on a morning flight already drunk and proceeded to drink himself to the point of illness. His family is probably ignoring it because they’re used to living with an out of control alcoholic.

Puzzleheaded_Age8937

A couple honeymooning to HNL was sitting across from my husband in C+ (I was a few rows up). The man is loving the free drinks. FA keeps serving him to celebrate despite his intoxication. Guy thinks he’s hilarious, he’s loud (could be heard over headphones), swearing profusely despite young kids around. Tells the couple in front (who they found out were going to the same resort) he’s going to kick him in the balls in the pool. Wife does nothing to tamper his demeanor. After several complaints another FA cuts him off. He gets belligerent with his “humor” calling out passengers. Upon landing the FA blocked the aisle next to their seats and said they were not allowed to leave. Wife asks why and FA says security is coming and they are going to return them to SLC. Wife is crying hysterically now as her honeymoon dreams are dashed. At that point my husband met up with me at the boarding door and we left so didn’t see the rest happen, but that FA was very stern so I don’t think it went well for them. At the very least I think she scared them. I don’t know if they could return them to SLC, but that was the threat. My husband has coached young men and adult men for 40 years and is used to locker room talk and guys over imbibing after the game yet he said even he was shocked at the guys behavior. That is 100% better IMO than having to put up with vomit smell for a whole flight though. I carry peppermint oil and a mask in my carryon just in case I run into obnoxious smells like that. Sorry you had to put up with it.

Spoonie23

I don’t think they can return them. They can have police arrest them in Hawaii.

Bright_Broccoli1844

Imagine stamping "Return to Sender" on their foreheads.

utah_traveler

New wife had probably seen that behavior before, but imagine if she hadn't and is only now realizing she just married that.

Dotsgirl22

I’d say the honeymoon is over for the wife. I can’t even imagine.

Smurfness2023

that girl should get out, now. It isn't going to get any better.

Puzzleheaded_Age8937

The return flight doesn’t leave for 6 hours so I guess they could sober up, but I don’t see how anyone could hold them until then. Seems like an idle threat. I do hope security made sure he wasn’t driving their rental car as they were headed to Turtle Bay.

Fair_Personality_210

Cool after she over served them the entire flight she made an empty threat after the plane landed. No way they flew back to SLC. Sounds like the FA put on a big show after every endured six hours of abuse when she should have simply refused him alcohol.

Puzzleheaded_Age8937

A male FA over served. She’s the one that cut him off after the passenger complaints.

realmeister

Surprised the GA and FA even let the guy board, much less continued to serve him alcohol. Alcoholism is the worst for families. My father was an alcoholic and I can't begin to tell you the damage it has caused to us. One of the reasons I'm all for marijuana legalization and for stricter DWI laws.

footballrunner800

Yea it’s sad the more I think about it. The kid had to feed himself. It’s so normal going from eating then on his switch without bothering anyone.

realmeister

Def a sign that the kid is used to it, which in turn indicates an alcoholic father. Hope and pray the dad sees the light and realizes he needs help. My boss last year was an alcoholic. Brought back a lot of negative feelings and disgust. On the other hand, most of the time there's a reason these individuals feel they need to numb themselves.

shinebock

> Surprised the GA and FA even let the guy board I'm not. Denying boarding for that is likely a ton of paperwork, more like they either didn't notice, or taking the *thoughts and prayers* route of hoping it doesn't cause an issue.

Smurfness2023

> One of the reasons I'm all for marijuana legalization how dose this even make sense?

realmeister

I've never meant an angry stoner, but plenty of angry and abusive alcoholics.

Explorer4820

Have you ever been around a group of baked teens who giggled for hours straight after midnight? This happened to us at a campground and for the first time in my life I seriously contemplated homicide.

realmeister

Much better than a father yelling, threatening physical violence, driving like a maniac, and taking out his anger on anybody and everything. Never made me contemplate suicide, but I've struggled a lot throughout my life with all kinds of issues.

Teach11552

They do become loud, obnoxious and overly dramatic. Same shit in my book.

lunch22

Marijuana is already legal in many places. It has not had any impact on the prevalence of alcoholism or DWI.

OceansAndRoses

Because alcohol is at every event, function, restaurant, theme park, it’s literally everywhere! Pot can only be consumed on private property. They are not equal. Portland Pickles are the first stadium I’ve heard of getting THC drinks… ETA: I can’t even get CBD drinks as often as I’d like, in public. Very few grocery stores even carry them.

lunch22

Why downvotes? I’m just stating facts, not my opinion. I’m not against legalization of Marijuana.

Ok-Engineering-4068

I remember riding back from DC on a school bus with a middle school field trip and a kid threw up all down the front of himself. I was a parent chaperone and all of the kids started screaming like there was a homicidal maniac onboard with a machete. I did as much as I could to help clean up but that was a looooong ride back to the school in a bus that smelled of vomit. I thought I was going to be sick. 🤢 I told my son, no more field trips for me.

everyothertoofus

I sat in the last row of a delta flight SLC to IAD long ago- when smoking in the back was still a thing. Had one of a drunken couple tell me - just sit on the other side of aisle. No problem, the whole row was empty. FA kept serving them, unril i quietly mention to FA in galley that the guy was mostly passed out and kept dropping lit cigs on the floor

Tardislass

I'm clearly reminded of traveling alone back in the 1980s as a 15 year old and sitting next to a guy and his wife who clearly had some drinks in the hotel bar and then proceeded to order about 5-8 more bottles of vodka/jack Daniels bottles-you know those little liquor bottles. The woman gets drunk and falls asleep while the guy next to me does the "close talking" and asking me about myself even after I put my headphones on and listen to my walkman. FA was totally oblivious and kept giving him drinks even after I gave her the "don't do it" head shake. Worst 3.5 hr trip to visit my grandparents. I'd had hopes times would have changed but apparently not.

Smurfness2023

> I'd had hopes times would have changed um... wat?

japandroi5742

Ugh. I’m OK admitting it, because I was 22, and I feel you’re allowed one of these stories, ONCE, at around that age. (tugs collar nervously) In fall, 2003, friend and I had spent a month in Europe after graduating from college, and on our last night, in Florence, before flying back to LA, we stayed up all night drinking and getting worked by some Italians in foosball. By the time we got to the airport for our flight to Frankfurt, neither of us were in a good place. As we started taxiing, I got that feeling - that I had about one minute before I started puking. There were no barf bags in the seatback. The person we shared a row with had a plastic bag carrying a book he’d bought in the airport store, and I asked him if I could have his bag because I was about to puke. HE SAID NO. Rather than punch him for his dumb bag, my lizard brain made the next best decision, which was to sprint to a nearby lavatory even though we were in the process of taxiing. I did the deed - loudly - and upon exiting some 2-3 minutes later received a slew of nasty words in German from the flight attendant, all likely 12 letters long. Of course, our plane was forced to pull off the taxiway to a holding area, where we waited for about 20 minutes before we could once again line up for takeoff. Now, as an adult, I feel awful for this because I very likely caused people to miss their connections. I effed up. For my friend and I, however, we got a ride in a car under the massive FRA terminal so we’d make our connection, which was rad. We were the last ones to board our plane, and when we arrived at our row near the back, a golden-aged couple had helped themselves to our window and aisle seats, and using their age as justification (they weren’t at the age where we maybe would have considered it) requested we switch and sit in their seats in the middle bank of what was Lufthansa 2-5-2, IIRC. It didn’t take long for me, in my wrecked state, to politely tell them that wasn’t going to happen and that they should take the seats they had been assigned. I hope I redeemed myself to r/delta for standing up to the seat thieves. Thank you for reading this important story.

PleasantRabbit1511

A teen puked on MCO to CVG yesterday and they returned the plane to the gate. If you had not made it to the lavatory you prob would have turned everyone around anyway! At least you made it to the restroom!

Overall_Antelope_504

Usually, someone that drunk gets kicked off before even taking off. I'd be pissed especially because I can't deal with vomit. The family must be used to it

KlutzyEnergy4120

You can notify the airline. Ask for a CRO.

Smurfness2023

a Chief Revenue Officer? should they do a Teams call?

KlutzyEnergy4120

Customer Resolutions Officer

Explorer4820

What da hail — do Delta FAs earn a commission from liquor sales? Any FA who pulls this on a long flight needs to find a new job.

footballrunner800

Guy is awake and is trying to hide the puke bag he tried to give to the FA but got told to put under his seat. Let’s see if he tries to drink during the morning service….

SufficientAnalyst383

Any update? Did he have a triple Bloody Mary for breakfast?

footballrunner800

I was waiting for it but no he just took 2 bites from his sandwich and went back to sleep

SufficientAnalyst383

Darn! :)

Ok-Engineering-4068

Yikes!

2_Spicy_2_Impeach

Flying SEA->DTW right before Thanksgiving. Late flight due to work meetings I couldn’t escape. Guy sits across aisle from me. Tries talking to me as people are still boarding but I can’t understand him. It’s first so he immediately orders double Woodford. I realize he’s just really drunk. Lights off and he’s pounding them all flight. He can barely speak but they’re still giving him doubles. Kids in first row are throwing toys at each other for half the flight. Couple times toy rolled under seats in to aisle by both of us. Mumbles something after the first time it happened. Happens again and he gets up. Beside me and the hammered guy(and kids), the median age around me is 60. Gets to the first row and I hear him hit the ground. I thought he went to go yell at the kids. Stewardess gets on and asks if there is a doctor on board, feel the plane decelerating over Wisconsin, and he comes to after about a minute or so. Initially freaks out because he’s drunk and confused. We calm him down and he’s just embarrassed now. He was just very dehydrated. Wife of doctor switches seats with him so he could sit next to the doctor. Thankfully we make it to Detroit. We land and taxi super quick. Paramedics meet us but the guy is super embarrassed and asks if he can walk off the plane and get in to the wheelchair waiting in the walkway. Paramedics finally agree and the guy gets off. Kids in first row start bitching because they’re in the first row and get to leave the plane first.

turtle0831

All alcohol should probably be banned from airports and flights. I’m sure I’ll get downvoted for saying it, but that would at least help with the drunk yucky people.

owlthirty

It would solve so many problems if they didn’t serve alcohol.

Affectionate_Soft862

That would be lovely, but society is full of a bunch of alcoholics in denial, so it would never happen

Lunar_Landing_Hoax

I agree with you. At the very least limit everyone to 2 drinks. Every bit of disruptive behavior I've seen on a flight was by a drunk person.

3rd-party-intervener

But people like to get a little  buzzed to deal with not getting scared by turbulence 🤷‍♂️

pwrmaster7

Punish everyone for the mistakes of a few--- no thanks

SufficientAnalyst383

That would suck.

Smurfness2023

no need to ban.. just limit to 2-3 drinks max or something.

turtle0831

A limit would be great.

owlthirty

Omg….. That’s awful.

homchenko

That's crazy, I was on yesterday's hnd to lax flight in comfort plus. No drunk barfing dads on that one haha.

page394poa

…isn’t even fazed*

Ronw1993

I was only cut off once (BDL-MSP I believe?), after two doubles and was like Hmm ok, I feel fine but your call. Here’s the thing: I feel so bad for flight attendants, they already have to be baby-sitters, therapists, movers, problem-solvers and a million other things. The last thing they need is an irritable passenger because they want a 3rd drink that they don’t actually need.

Fair_Personality_210

You had the equivalent of four drinks on a short flight and were surprised when you were denied a 5th? Hmm ok

Shesays7

Saunters up and takes a wine from FC without recourse? Shocked the FA’s didn’t threaten to boot him for circumventing being cut off

Midmodstar

That poor kid 😢

ilalli

Since when is HNL to LAX a 7hr flight?

footballrunner800

Meant to say HND

MauiGal12

Sorry, 6 hours left? It takes about 5.5hrs to get to LAX from HNL and they don’t even serve alcohol until they hit cruising range on the plane. A little bit over exaggerated.

footballrunner800

If you look up the flight, you’ll see it’s a 10 hour flight. Service starts an hour in when all of this happened. Even if it was half that it’s still shitty being in a plane with that smell

footballrunner800

You’re right. I messed up meant HND 😅

YouFirst_ThenCharles

The flight from hnl to lax is not 7 hours

BBakerStreet

Sure, pure flight time is 5:30, but that doesn’t include boarding at HNL and taxiing at both airports. It could easily approach 7 hours of plane time.

YouFirst_ThenCharles

An hour later we still have 6hrs left. You’re going to tell me they continued to serve someone during an hour long taxi and climb out? And that the taxi and climb out took an hour? Not buying it.

BBakerStreet

It seems the OP meant HND instead of HNL.

YouFirst_ThenCharles

Indeed, Japan is quite a bit further than Honolulu.

Frequent-Package-607

That sucks but you are already embellishing so I have to turn down my sympathetic outrage. What kind of route are you flying where 1 hour AFTER getting additional drinks up front there are STILL 6 hours to go to get to LAX from HNL? It’s like 5ish hour flight! They did not possibly allow him to wander around and get drinks before you hit cruising altitude so you were in the air before the “1 hour in” clock started.

Smurfness2023

I think he doesn't know the codes for wherever he was flying from

Frequent-Package-607

Got that from his subsequent edit. Flight from Haneda. So I will turn up the sympathetic outrage appropriately. That does suck. Think I would still take his situation over my worst one on a United flight from ORD to HNL. Unfortunate medical emergency of elderly man seated directly in front of me. Had a stroke mid flight and shit himself in his seat. Felt sorry for the guy but we all had had to sit and take it for 5 hours. Never found out what happened to him.
