I swear if Brad Holmes drafts someone this year whose name means "God of Comets" or asteroids or any other celestial body, I'm buying a jersey the second they drop
Spoken like someone who’s never been to LA lmao people have no idea how dumb they sound generically complaining about southern California when it’s clear they’ve never been
This legit makes me kind of emotional. To think about how Detroit was (accurately) viewed as this toxic environment of losers and now we are a destination, and a place where guys like Amon-Ra and JG say was the best thing to happen to them is truly amazing. It is such a testament to the importance of leadership, culture, and just treating people decently. (Looking at you, Patricia, get fucked for eternity.)
We as fans went through an even more profound darkness. It certainly shaped *me*. (Into a terminally traumatized fan who constantly believes that the Lions are going to fuck everything up and start sucking horribly tomorrow and go 0-17 next year.)
It's hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that people now want to come to Detroit to play for the Lions. I grew so used to the Lions being a utter dumpster fire that it always surprises me to see guys rave about the culture.
Major kudos to Sheila Hamp. The grit and the wisdom to know that a paradigm shift was desperately needed for relevance. WCF wanted to groom WCF Jr. to replace him. WCF jr hired MIllen. I think It was probably difficult for WCF to acknowledge his daughter's passion for football so the sojourn in mediocrity continued. Now look at the organzation today. Who would ever believe that players now want to play in DETROIT!!!?
It was alleged that Russ Thomas was WCF's drinking buddy, so that made WCF complicit, despite the legend that WCF was a "generous" owner. Barry missed all of training camp and didnt sign his contract until the first game of the season. It's really hard to conceive how mean spirited Russ Thomas was. The Lions drafted hall of fame caliber players who jumped to the old AFL because Thomas wouldnt pay.
Thomas was notoriously cheap
Hadl and Belitnikoff.
Don Shula was an assistant coach.
Coach Wayne lasted a while. The last Lions coach before MC/DC to go to the NFC Championship.
I saw that blowout at RFK.
Also Patty alienated the good players we already had (Diggs, Slay, A'shawn).
We had back-to-back winning seasons under Quinn/Caldwell. The culture was good. Things didn't go upside down until that sack of shit became head coach.
>Also Patty alienated the good players we already had (Diggs, Slay, A'shawn).
And please lets not forget how this toxic fucking sub co-signed every shitty move, every step of the way. How many times was Slay called a diva because he took offense at being called a cock sucker.
Dashawn Hand was also a good pick at the time. Quinn wasn't bad at finding NFL talent, he just wasn't good at finding elite talent (aside from Offensive Line)
Are you referring to Hock as a 4th round TE because that's what he got traded for? I'm joking but I honestly don't know who you're referring to. Hock was a big miss that high though.
He was better offensively than defensively but right now the only skill position players he drafted that are still contributors are Swift and Hock.
Patricia definitely had a hand in it. Quinn wasn't a great GM, but he was an alright drafter overall. It just took more of a dive when he was trying to draft for Patricia's "system".
Quinn was not an alright drafter. He was ass at drafting. He had like 2 late round hits (golladay, JRM) and hit on Decker, Ragnow, and Glasgow and people think he was great.
Jarrad Davis and Teez Tabor are horrendous. Jahlani Tavai. Come on man
The only first round picks to stick with the lions on a second contract were Decker and Ragnow.
Perhaps you missed the part where OP said Quinn he was an “alright” drafter, not great. Or maybe you missed the part where op said his picks to fit Patricias system, like Tavai and tabor, weren’t great
I feel like you just described what an average or "alright" GM generally does.. Some hits, some misses. A bad GM ie Matt Millen, doesnt hit on anything. In 30 seconds of research, the average hit rate is 30% ish, and the average contributor rate is just 44%. BQ managed at least that I would say..
I mean, honestly that's pretty good. The hit rate for draft picks is not high. You're not gonna draft stars every time. He wasn't amazing but he certainly wasn't that bad of a drafter
let me add a little more context. Here's the number of total players Quinn drafted that signed a second contract with the lions (I am not counting Graham Glasgow or Jarrad Davis or Jaylen Reeves-Maybin returning after going elsewhere)
2016 draft: 2, Taylor Decker and Joe Dahl
2017 draft: 0
2018 draft: 2 (Frank Ragnow, Tracey Walker)
2019 draft: 1, Will Harris
2020 draft: 0
5 players in 5 years. Brad is already 20% there, and has every draft pick except 1 still on the roster. The difference between these two as drafters is night and day.
Bob Quinn gets too much credit around here, and I don't know why.
Lets compare to John Robinson, the now-fired GM of the Titans, who left that roster in a horrible spot and should be considered a bad GM:
2016 draft: 2 (Derrick Henry, Kevin Byard)
2017 draft: 1 (Jayon Brown)
2018 draft: 1 (Harold Landry)
2019 draft: 2 (Jeffrey Simmons, Amani Hooker)
2020 draft: 0, and all players are off the team
Both teams were left with no depth and no talent. I'm not even saying bob quinn needed to draft 4 starters every year. Joe Dahl was a quality depth piece. He's the only depth player to re-sign on a second contract. And you could argue that there was some talent -a'shawn robinson is still in the league- that was driven away because of Patricia, which I'd agree, my main point is that bob quinn was horrible at drafting, too.
He's exactly the type of player we needed to turn it around. Notice how he didn't have to tweet, unfollow the lions, or go on podcasts to talk about wanting a contract extension? Zero drama, all hard work. Nobody even knew the extension was in the works until leaks started coming out yesterday morning.
I've wondered that myself. And no, I haven't really seen anything. My suspicion though is that the guy is still in his 40s and despite the ignominy of his stint with Detroit and subsequent jobs, he's invested in the NFL and will keep trying to find other jobs, because that's where his career aspirations are. At some point he may even get a chance at something high profile enough that he actually has to clean up his reputation to get it -- I think at that point, an agent or image consultant or whatever will convince him to grant an interview where he talks about his time here. And that could go either way: maybe he'll (honestly or facetiously) own up to the mistakes and say he's learned from his past, or double down and blame fickle fans or the bad timing with Stafford's injuries, COVID, etc.
During his tenure with the Eagles, he mentioned his reconnection with Slay and how they hashed things out, if I recall correctly Patricia also recognized his mishandling of that situation and would handle it differently now.
Now of course he is going to say all the right words when he is on the same team at the time, but it at least showed some growth at face value. I think he tried too hard to be a hardass, to replicate the "patriot way" etc rather than be his own man. If he were to get another head coaching job, I would imagine he would do things differently.
That dude is a true Detroit lion. The way he plays. The mentality he has. Dude is just a true stud and someone you can tell your kids to look up too with confidence
Honest, totally understandable. It pretty know that players never want to come here, but when they do they generally fall on love with team/city.
Tate, marv for example.
This is pretty cool to hear. Honestly, I feel like if you're getting the chance to play in the NFL should you really care where you go first, especially as a 4th round pick. However, I can't blame him. We were historically a bad team getting further from our playoff runs, new QB from the outside looked like was a salary dump from his old team, new coach the media is poking fun for talking about biting kneecaps. First year even was a struggle, but things like not going to a place you think you will succeed can have a DE-Motivation effect. Not with ARSB. Dude is epitome of a Dan Campbell guy.
This has all become a very special and beautiful story. The first Act was 2020 and I’d say we’re about midway through the second.
And, the cast of characters are vast: MCDC and his coordinators; Sheila and the suits in the upstairs office; young, reluctant blue chip recruits set foot in Allen Park; the POD boys and last, but not least, the fucking citizens of Detroit.
A city kicked in the nuts and has been down a long time. Suddenly, this team starts giving everyone HOPE
Can’t wait to see how the final act ends. I know it ain’t gonna be a sob story!
He is everything Detroit tried to portray itself as for a sports franchise. And he is one of the main reasons we are where we are today. His work ethic mirrors that of this city. He is GRIT. He is US. I love this man so much.
> draft has *paid* the ultimate
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
“Pay to come here” Is that because coming here made him the highest paid WR in NFL. Not like he gave us a discount ;)
All honesty he’s earned it. But that’s such an odd statement.
No he wasn't. He signed a contract to play football for X amount of dollars. He played football for that money. If players were paid based on performance then they would be getting paid per yard, first down, and touchdown.
If a player underperforms, should he have to give money back? His play was below and before their subsequent pay.
He has. And my god this sub is so bad that you can’t joke.
I didn’t say it was a bad contract. It’s not! But for a guy saying he would have “played for free” it’s not like it’s a discount either lol. That’s all I was saying.
Im sorry what?
Im happy for the man and his accomplishments but...Aman-Ra Saint Brown?
That sounds like a name you choose for yourself later on in life after a great deal of success.
Does he have any kids?
I need to know if he named them something equally wacky.
"This is my son, Andrew Anubis Saint Pharoah Brown."
Coming off Patricia era understandable. Seemed toxic. And going from living in LA playing at USC to Detroit is huge difference
Isn't USC's campus in a bad part of LA?
Weather dude
They're called meteorologists
He's the sun god, not an asteroid god
🤣🤣
Is there an asteroid god? I'll take him on the team
I swear if Brad Holmes drafts someone this year whose name means "God of Comets" or asteroids or any other celestial body, I'm buying a jersey the second they drop
Hahahaha
*Weatherperson* (it's 2024 FFS)
USC alum, not a great area outside campus but the campus is gorgeous and very safe
And playing in Pasadena ain't exactly the hood.
Thats UCLA
Mind got soft. As usual. LA Memorial. Oops.
Tbh I thought they played there too lol
That's UCLA. Although USC does play there every other year
And wear home jerseys.
Yes it is
It’s all fenced in and it’s a mad nice campus. It’s no Westwood and UCLA but it’s beautiful
Every part is the bad part of LA
Spoken like someone who’s never been to LA lmao people have no idea how dumb they sound generically complaining about southern California when it’s clear they’ve never been

I'm guessing you've never been to LA? Or even Detroit, for that matter?
Traffic is much better in Motown.

We're winning now. Not so sensitive anymore. God, I love coney dogs
Even the bad parts of Detroit are better than the good parts of LA.
Should have put an /s on the end, RIP inbox
That’s true but lions weren’t the ONLY crappy destination.
Just a perennial crappy destination
But not the ONLY Perennial crappy destination
Ok dude, calm down.
Uhh have you been to LA? It's literally feces in the street and coffee shops full of people wearing UofM hats.
Go Blue!
Can't blame him. We were at our lowest point since 2008.
This legit makes me kind of emotional. To think about how Detroit was (accurately) viewed as this toxic environment of losers and now we are a destination, and a place where guys like Amon-Ra and JG say was the best thing to happen to them is truly amazing. Without Patricia there might not be a MCDC
Very true. The dominoes fell how they needed to fall. Thanks for that, Matt. But get fucked anyway lol.

I think he meant 2021 and the start of 2022. They weren’t even here for that era.

Red Wings kinda did the same thing. Demers started it with #19. Bowman, all hail the prince. ...
Oh absolutely. I remember the dead wings era well.
He has to watch a real head coach succeed. That should be bad in itself. But I agree fuck him
Major kudos to Sheila Hamp. I completely get it, that roster was a tire fire after football terrorist Matt Patricia had his grubby hands on it.
I dont think I've ever seen a team regress that hard with a new coach... just completely gutted the team, and ruined morale so quick.
Urban Meyer is disappointed that his accomplishments in JAX aren’t being properly recognized
At least he only had half a season to gut his team, Quinn and Patricia had *years*
It was the epitome of what happens with toxic leadership that establishes a culture of dogshit and the results are 💯 negative.
He should be hired as a quarterbacks coach in Chicago to help groom Caleb.
Quinn did that. Patricia just pissed off everybody on that shitty roster.
Wasn't Quinn a decent drafter before he started taking "Patty's guys" like tabor and tavai?
Also Patty alienated the good players we already had (Diggs, Slay, A'shawn). We had back-to-back winning seasons under Quinn/Caldwell. The culture was good. Things didn't go upside down until that sack of shit became head coach.
>Also Patty alienated the good players we already had (Diggs, Slay, A'shawn). And please lets not forget how this toxic fucking sub co-signed every shitty move, every step of the way. How many times was Slay called a diva because he took offense at being called a cock sucker.
I don't think so. He drafted OL high which got us Jackson, Ragnow and Decker. Outside of that his best picks were Ashawn, Golladay, and Walker.
I guess it's hard to know when your coaching staff regresses players instead of developing them
Dashawn Hand was also a good pick at the time. Quinn wasn't bad at finding NFL talent, he just wasn't good at finding elite talent (aside from Offensive Line)
He was legitimately good at drafting offense. His biggest miss was a 4th round TE (not counting Kerryon, he was awesome until injuries)
Are you referring to Hock as a 4th round TE because that's what he got traded for? I'm joking but I honestly don't know who you're referring to. Hock was a big miss that high though. He was better offensively than defensively but right now the only skill position players he drafted that are still contributors are Swift and Hock.
Michael Roberts

Don't forget Jeff Okudah.
can I please?
I put that one on Patricia. Okudah was looked at a can't miss pick and Patricia destroyed him.
Perhaps you missed the part where OP said Quinn he was an “alright” drafter, not great. Or maybe you missed the part where op said his picks to fit Patricias system, like Tavai and tabor, weren’t great
Yes. I am saying Quinn was not 'alright'. Quinn was **bad**.
Millen did pick Backus & Megatron. Batting under .100, but he hit 1 HR at least.
He didn't pick Megatron I'm pretty sure lol... Wasn't that Mayhew?
He was Millen's last 1st round pick
Jarrad Davis missed EVERY tackle, like how was that possible, he was big and fast and failed over and over.
I mean, honestly that's pretty good. The hit rate for draft picks is not high. You're not gonna draft stars every time. He wasn't amazing but he certainly wasn't that bad of a drafter

Everyone was accountable to Matty Patty except him to himself or anyone else.
Schwartz and Mornhinweg have entered the chat

MCDC said he liked Detroit and wanted to be here because it's a city that values work and family above all else. That description fits ARSB too.
Has Patricia ever talked about his coaching experience with the Lions? Ever admitted to mistakes?
After the amount of shit he gave reporters, no one wants to listen to what that dbag has to say.
I've wondered that myself. And no, I haven't really seen anything. Unless you live here, it's a hard place to understand. People are tough on you, but will fight to the death for you. I love Detroit
Hmm notice he said he’d pay to be here…after he got his bag 😂
Well yeah. Payment requires money and our admission prices are through the roof…
I feel like he kinda did. He could have waited to resign until after some other WRs signed and then try to hold out for more money.
That dude is a true Detroit lion. The way he plays. The mentality he has. Dude is just a true stud and someone you can tell your kids to look up too with confidence

I can understand him not wanting to be here at that time. I'm glad he's having so much success, seems like a great guy on and off the field.
Same thing with Alim I bet.. I remember watching his intro call... He definitely did not seem excited to be drafted by Detroit at the time.
Thankful for his positive attitude. Not wanting to be somewhere could really kill morale
While Monte Clark was coach, Detroit players were bummed when opposing teams were calling Lions' plays before the snap.
Well he can afford it now, I’ll take some of that money!
Shiiitttt… these boys are just getting started 🦁
Man, this is good to see. Can't remember anyone saying this about this organization my whole lifetime.

Marvin Jr to the Cards. Predictable and best pick/match so far.
This really could have gone without being said...
This is 100% understandable. This team used to be where careers went to die.
PRAISE THE SUN GOD 🙌
Damn this dude is close to being my favorite lion of all time we wouldn't be the same team without the sun god
I thought this guy was named after the bad guy from Thundercats. That's Mumm-Ra.
“Pay to come here” Is that because coming here made him the highest paid WR in NFL. Not like he gave us a discount ;) All honesty he’s earned it. But that’s such an odd statement.
We got the discount from his production whilst playing on a 4th round rookie contract. He's earned every penny.
No we didn't. He signed a contract based on where he was drafted and was paid accordingly.
Yes but his play was clearly above and beyond his draft status and subsequent pay.
No he wasn't. He signed a contract to play football for X amount of dollars. He played football for that money.
