I ain’t sleeping on anyone as long we aren’t giving up 300 yards passing every single game. I’d like to be comfortable on 3rd and long for once

Ralphie_V

3rd and 14, blitz immediately gets home, QB desperately throws it into the secondary, caught by a receiver with no one in his zip code. 20 yard gain, 1st down

surenopemaybe

It was like clockwork last season. I was more confident getting off the field on a 3rd and 4 than a 3rd and 14.

ParticularCanary3130

Right?! It was such a weird feeling. Yay 3rd down! Shoot...7+ yards...this isn't over....fuuuudge i was right ....sigh....

Aggravating-Note5163

The thing I most hoped to hear when we were on D last year was "Stafford (or whoever) connects with Nakua (or whoever) who takes it all the way to the Lions' 11!" That meant they wouldn't have room to get behind our secondary on the next play, and we could hold them to 3. It's amazing how far (how close) we got last year with that being the case. Now the secondary is absolutely stacked, and the season can't start soon enough.

Antisocial_gamer

Same! I knew we gonna stuff their run but could never trust the secondary

ARSB_TD

Why.. why do this. This hurts.

I_Am_Not_That_Man

3 and long but then all of a Sutton…. FIRST DOWN, VIKINGS!

mexicola3793

I hear Mark Champion saying this

Necessary-Art2149

Go watch Don Brown M defense highlights and lowlights. Highlights are epic. Lowlights are awful. Blitzing like crazy with press man coverage makes it hell for any DB

Ok_Extreme7597

Then you think there’s no way the greatest kicker of all time won’t hit a 66 yard field goal in a dome(sorry for the vietnam flashbacks I’m about to give)

AlfalfaParticular672

So many times.... so many MF'ers yelled!

FomtBro

3rd and 14 was more dangerous than 3rd and 3.

Lifeisagreatteacher

Or 300 yards in the second half to blow a halftime lead

actually-potato

branch is our third (nickel) corner. ik that fans are out of faith bc of how shit our secondary was last season but our number one weakness has turned into a strength with just one offseason. arnold rakestraw davis robertson mosely branch is a stacked cb room that any nfl team would be jealous of. if arnold and rakestraw live up to their draft potential we could legit be looking at the second coming of the LoB

YDoEyeNeedAName

between Branch Kirby Iffy and CD3 im sure someone will be able to slow them down

beardofzetterberg

No team is going to be super confident in their 3rd corner on one of those guys…but it’s a bit of an edge case.

ImperialxWarlord

amen. Too many games, win or lose, where we just could not stop our opponents at times. Be it a loss like the 49ers game where we just handed the second half to them. Or the saints game where we barely kept them from winning. Our defense need to be better to match our killer offense.

Dreambig203

Haha this exactly

HashSlingingSlacker

Lol I cant even imagine being comfortable on 3rd and long... the clenching is too ingrained. I don’t even know the last time we had a solid pass defense. The 90s??

Jorihe84

Who was sleeping on him?

My girlfriend if he brings us a title

detroitlions-ModTeam

Keep it civil / do not troll

drewsosa33

31 other teams for letting him fall to the end of the second round!

No_Seaworthiness8880

Crabtree!

plandoubt

My wife’s boyfriends girlfriend loves him

Jelly_James

I don't think any of us are sleeping on him from what i saw.

bkakemw2

I think we're all not sleeping on ANY of our guys. FA or the Draft. I think the mindset is "Welcome to the squad. You know the goal. Let's do this." In BH We Trust FTP

TruuTree

I’m honestly stoked on Rakestraw. Seems like a chip on shoulder type of guy that I think fits the culture perfectly.

Timmahj

They both have chips on their shoulders. Both fell farther than they should have.

Lifeisagreatteacher

But they both have a great chance to contribute to a Super Bowl in their first season

xproofx

Sounds lumpy. I prefer a mattress.

Fantastic-Grocery107

QBs aren’t gonna be able to leave the ball up in the air on us anymore I think. We’ve basically got WRs who like to hit people playing CB right now.

Jammer_Kenneth

Wait I thought one of Rakestraw's weaknesses was a low interception count

Kidd82

It is. He gets a lot of PBUs but brings very few of those in for INTs.

[deleted]

Just get us 3 and outs

blubaldnuglee

Yep. No need to intercept if you can get their offense off the field. It was a weakness last year... so many 15-20 yard heartbreakers...

Ryguyyee

I think that should be nuanced though. His freshman year in the SEC he proved himself so no one would throw to his side so his interceptions are low because he was never challenged.

BZNagain

I think half of all of Jordan loves completions were just chucking up the ball on a wing and a prayer that his receiver somehow came down with

acoasterlovered

I will laugh hilariously if he is better than Arnold that being said let’s have 2 CB1’s running around here in 25

byke_mcribb

How hilarious is your laugh gonna be? Gonna have to hear your normal laugh first.

NoModsNoMaster

What if his normal laugh is already hilarious? I guess it won’t require as much effort to laugh hilariously if we have 2 CB1’s “running around here.”

byke_mcribb

Hmm true. The 2 CB1's makes me question my comment... I'll be in the cellar thinking about this.

acoasterlovered

Hey

byke_mcribb

Shalom

lionbatcher

I'm more concerned about what happens if he laughs non- hilariously. Like.... "ha......ha. utter brilliance"

BillySims4HOF

A buddy of mine snorts when he laughs. I find THAT hilarious. 😤

Xatron7

I hadn't even considered sleeping on Rakestraw, usually my bed works out for me just fine

bindersfullofburgers

Dad?

Lost2nite389

I actually wanted him at 29, I wanted Arnold too but thought he would go top 10-15, the fact we got both is insane

Alarmed_Restaurant

Can we just all agree we aren’t gonna sleep on anyone drafted by Brad Holmes?

Jbales901

Like I am thinking the late rounders going to kill it... expecting the guy from BC Canada and the guy from BC going to the probowl in like 3 years

whogroup2ph

We can nap on the canada ot for a while

DanCampbellsNipples

Alrighty

TestosteroneDrone

This makes me think of when the Ravens had Samari Rolle and Chris McAlister and ran a 4-6 defense and basically dared the offense to test their corners. It was a no fly zone. I’m hoping that at some point we have Arnold and Rakestraw anchoring down on secondary.

Aggravating-Note5163

Now CD3 will be playing with a chip on *his* shoulder, too. One year contract, with two badass rookie CB's nipping at his heels—his incentive to ball out just went up exponentially.

4schwifty20

I'm just waiting and seeing with optimism. Brad & company have drafted extremely well the last few years. In fact, it's hard to argue anyone drafting better.

brizzboog

Watched his highlights and the kid is an outstanding tackler and great in run support. I expect he'll be getting a few of those db blitzes AG put in during last season.

MadMax_08

Nobody’s sleeping. If anything, people are acting like we drafted Darelle Revis, and Deion Sanders. Great in college doesn’t mean great in NFL. But here’s to hoping

[deleted]

Hopefully now QBs won't carve us up.

BenGrahamButler

Colonel Ennis is going to be a refreshing delight to the team!

LuckyHaskens

All the ladies love Colonel Ennis!

Zuckerbees

I think the biggest “holy shit” thought for me when it comes to our overhauled secondary… imagine Aidan Hutchinson with an extra half a second.

Zakth3R1PP3R

This. It works both ways, Hutch forces bad throws towards a competant secondary, lockdown CBs force the QB to hold on to the ball and get eaten by Hutch. Legit question, but as a QB you'd prefer a sack to an Int, right? Besides being hit by the snow plow with a 97 painted on the side... Loss of yardage > turnover, game wise.

jivy723

I don’t think anyone is sleeping on him. I actually think he winds up starting at Corner over terrain. Arnold plays inside, rakestraw is way more a press coverage kind of guy

beef_tuggins

Terrain

jivy723

Haha damn autocorrect. Bet he runs a lot of different types of terrains tho

LoganHutbacher

I imagine they'll both slot in like our 1st and 2nd rounders did last year

stups317

Is his name pronounced with a hard e sound like penis or a soft e sound like dennis?

Koreansteamer

Rakey Straw Rakee Straw Ra Keestraw Rakeest Raw I think it’s pronounced Rake Straw. Like your raking straw out of the barn.

stups317

We both know I meant his first name.

n_othing__

Rakestraw and Davis are gonna fuck people up.

CCPunch5

The secondary last year made me wish we were on a 3rd and 1 rather than a 3rd and 19. We gave up long gains like clockwork. Anytime a corner needed to make a play, there was a mistake or lapse in coverage. I know Holmes said he doesn’t draft for need, but I don’t think going corner in the first 2 rounds was going BPA. I think he was dead set on getting the 2 top corners on their board at their picks and then going BPA the remainder of the draft.

eri1az

But rake was the bpa at 61 And Arnold when we traded up

lebuttit

Real True Sons know

sau-wmu-goblue

Not gonna lie, I'm sleeping on him a bit. I hope I'm wrong, but the one position where athleticism is a must is CB. Not saying he's gonna be a bust, but not super excited either.

mrdaiquiri

What makes you think he's not athletic?

deepkeeps

Duh, he ran 4.51 instead of 4.47...

Lifeisagreatteacher

These 40 times as the end all is ridiculous. If you’re 4.6 you are fast enough to compensate as necessary with the skills that make these guys great college CB’s.

sau-wmu-goblue

It's not the end all. I think he did run a 4.6 I think, and speed is important to the position. Not the most important but important, and plenty of good college corners don't make it because of speed. Doesn't mean he is doomed, but it is the position where 40 times are most closely correlated to success.

sau-wmu-goblue

After actually looking it up vs going off memory, I'll just say my brain remembers bad, and I'll eat my negs while thinking better of Ennis Rakestraw.

hleleph21

Plus he allegedly had an injury that lasted through the combine, maybe some more optimism that Rakestraw is faster than testing suggests.

sau-wmu-goblue

I think he ran a 4.6, I know thats not necessarily indicative but that is kinda the way teams looked at him from what I've seen. He's a good culture fit and a very good run defender so there's a fit, just not sold, but smarter people are.

x1echo

He was repeatedly mocked to us at 29 and Brad said that Arnold and Rakestraw were the top two CBs on his board. We got him at 61. I’m not sleeping on him.

Lifeisagreatteacher

Many mocks had Kool Aid McKendry going to Lions at 29, he went mid second round.

jodaewon

I could see a world where Robertson and Rakestraw win the starting jobs coming out of camp.
