If I don't see big numbers (and have my vision obstructed by: vulnerable x 1000), my epeen shrivels up into a tiny crumbly husk.

MF-HUMP

Came here to say this. If I don't see big numbers I'm haunted by the reality of my small penis.

Exldk

Can confirm. If I don't see big numbers I'm haunted by this guy's small penis.

Miserable-Pen-1341

This man grinds.

Foolofatuchus

You could just say you prefer to not see them instead of being a total douche about it lol. I also turned them off and itā€™s been great, but I donā€™t feel the need to deride people who like to see themā€¦

waffle-winner

I was speaking in the first person.

Foolofatuchus

Okay maybe Iā€™m just confused then. To me it sounded like you were mocking people who do like to see the big numbers, which I thought was just a little over the top. I must be missing something or else I wouldnā€™t be downvoted so heavily lol

Spee_3

Oh no no, he was mocking people that like numbers as someone that likes numbers lol. As someone that likes to see numbers, I completely agree. Iā€™m old and my epeen needs all the help it can get these days. If I could have a mod that would say ā€œlook how big!ā€ Every time I hit over a certain amount of damage it would awesome

waffle-winner

"ME-ME-ME-ME-MEGABONK!!!!"

huggarn

yep, they are completly unnecesary

Banned3rdTimesaCharm

They stroke my ego.

E_Barriick

Yup, I agree completely. I only turn them on with the training dummy if I'm testing something specific.

DiosMIO_Limon

Training dummy?? Please elaborate

E_Barriick

There's a training dummy in kyovashad

ToxicFactory

I hate when my screen gets flooded with numbers. I just want to see everything die quick!

Luuxlani

You are so active on this subreddit. And in a good way too! I see you in almost all posts!

Jecht-Blade

Yeah homie throws facts in all their info too. A true legend

KarlManjaro

Itā€™s truly baffling

MarzipanFit2345

stalker....

tianvay

Replaying the campaign on my new rig now. When setting the options I stumbled upon turning the numbers off and thought, why not? Will never turn them on again, you can actually see whatā€™s going on and the game is beautiful.

DrDeit

Yes I've been playing this way since S2. I do wish there was an option to see your largest dmg numbers on occasion, but comparing all or nothing, I've opted for the nothing route and haven't looked back.

shaunmman

I feel like Diablo 3 had the option to have crits on still. That's all I want. So I can at least tell WHEN I crit or overpower.

KennedyPh

Making them as Icon would be nice too. I donā€™t need number after I know the ballpark

BewstFTW

Maybe crit only or some custom value ('x' million or something)

Burningmann94

They just need to fix numbers to have M or B at the end so for example, 5.5m or 15m or 2.1b. Anything 6 digits will be like 100k, 300k, 350k etc. we donā€™t need exact damage numbers once we hit 6 digits an upā€¦

stardigrada

Would love to see something like up to date over the last 5 seconds stats up at the top of screen: - maximum single target damage over period - total damage over period (direct and DOT) - maximum single hit damage - average DPS per single target - average DPS total At minimum this should be an overlay on the practice targets.

Cameronx88

I turned this off during season 0 and it's never been switched back on. Watching videos with all the number diarrhea legitimately ruins the experience.

GideonOakwood

Same for me

Aldo_D_Apache

I didnā€™t know you could do this and Iā€™ll be doing it immediately next time I play. They are completely meaningless

chadsmo

Honest question , not trying to sound like a jerk. Have you not looked at the options menus before ? Does this mean you also donā€™t have advanced tooltips turned on ?

ToxicNotToxinGurl420

It hasn't always been in the game. I checked the options the first day I play a game, unless I specifically need to look for something. If you don't watch campfires or read patch notes it's easy to miss this option was added.

chadsmo

Fair enough I suppose

th3orist

obviously they did not look at the options menu too carefully, why even ask? the fact you ask an obvious question is what makes you sound like a jerk, whether you intend it or not

Black_at_it_again_1

Game looks 100% better with numbers and status effects off. Zero need for them

Tom0511

I dunno, I like watching em pop.. maybe that's a me thing

Black_at_it_again_1

You're not the minority. People like it. But enemies die just the same without seeing numbers covering them

Jpoland9250

I like seeing big numbers.

Mephistos_bane84

Thatā€™s me too, I want to see the numbers Iā€™m putting out

MUNCHINonBABI3Z

Iā€™m pretty new to the game and running an overpowered build and like to see the color when it pops offā€¦ but now that you mention it, Iā€™ve got an effect that creates orbs when I overpower so I might try turning the numbers off tonight

DannyKoll1

I love it without dmg numbers and any text on the screen as I care for the feeling of the combat and I actually play the game for the combat and feeling of killing enemies. I don\`t like playing text simulator so when the game was released I did not play with any build that caused vulnerability lol as I hated to have vulnerable vulnerable everywhere. So I was so glad they came up with the option to turn off combat text. Now I would love them to allow me to turn off even texts for picking up golds but I can live with that. So I totally understand you.

Burningmann94

If you didnt play a vulnerable build on launch you were doing something wrong. You must never even hit above nm 30s lol or even got to lvl 100

DannyKoll1

Who the hell cared, I had fun ā€¦ I play games for fun Not to compete and btw definitely can hit lvl 100 without vulnerable lol

Burningmann94

True, thereā€™s always that guy with 800 hours in finally hitting 100 on world tier 1 cause anything else is too hard

International_Meat88

I immediately turned off damage numbers at the start of D4. I did it back in D3 when I realized I donā€™t like the goofy, arcadey, maplestory-esque look of numbers popping up everywhere. I prefer the non-damage look of D2. I will turn it back on temporarily, once in a blue moon when Iā€™m testing out something so meticulous in my build that i need to see damage numbers on the training dummy.

Annual_Ad8816

I turn them off as soon as possible in any game that has them.

StartPraYing

Yup, best way to actually get immersed in the world imo.

MilleniumPelican

Also in Camp No-Number, here.

L0rdSkullz

But...but big numbers :(

therealNaj

Butā€¦.. monster health bars getting chunked. Thatā€™s all i look it. The number could be 5 or 5trillion, doesnā€™t matter to me at all.

Ezeeskillz

Exactly this! Monsterā€™s state is binary to me. Theyā€™re either alive or dead.Ā

therealNaj

Ya itā€™s just the people who like the numbers have the same chemical in their brain for gambling addiction. I like deductive reasoning and results. Not flashy fire works and fake numbers and hopes and wishes. Probably why i never liked crit builds. I have to worry too much about the chance to hit, crit chance, and then the multiplier. Itā€™s too much

arafella

Yeah, this is why I think complaints about ludicrous damage numbers are a bit silly. If the boss died in one hit it doesn't matter if you did 100 damage or 1,000,000,000,000.

somesketchykid

Keeping numbers small makes them easier to manipulate on back end and helps stymy power creep Endlessly scaling percentages are lazy and thats why d4 did so poorly at launch imo

Burningmann94

D4 not doing well on launch had absolutely zero to do with damage numbers and scaling. It had EVERYTHING to do with all the other bs problems that never got fixed, ie; not enough bank slots, no loot filter, no content endgame after lvl 100, poor gear progression, poor gear itemization, boring leveling meta after lvl 50, uniques way too rare, and many many more issues. Donā€™t even get me started on ā€œpeople load everyoneā€™s elseā€™s stash which causes game lagā€

arafella

That's not what I'm referring to. I'm talking about complaints that big numbers are meaningless and takes them out of the game. [Stuff like this](https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/d4/t/keep-damage-numbers-low/21364).

bdanred

Very fair. Sometimes I think it wld be nice on levels 1-40, but once you start having giant aoe attacks and very high crit and attackspeed, I don't miss it lol. I be seeing more numbers than actual screen

Redfeather1975

Thank you very much. I will turn it off and see what it's like.

Wild_Chemistry3884

I turned them off at launch. They arenā€™t needed at all and just cause visual clutter.

Shadowfury22

Not to mention they're pretty much fake if you consider how party content scaling works

vee_6

Thatā€™s a nice observation

gnawingrat

Can you elaborate on this please?

Shadowfury22

For sure! Imagine you're lv50 and are doing open-world content on WT2 dealing hundreds of thousands of damage to the lv50 mobs with each hit because your build is already that awesome. Then you invite a friend's freshly-created lv5 alt into your party. Shortly after, both of you approach one monster and you observe as your friend literally one-shots it with a single skill that crits for 100 dmg (the monster is lv5 on his screen). So if a 100-dmg hit was able to one-shot the very same mob that is requiring for you to deal 100k damage to it in order to do the same... that can only mean that the real HP of the mob is neither 100 nor 100k. Moreover, if YOU deal a 100-dmg hit to that mob, you won't even notice its HP bar going down. And so, if your friend's 100-dmg hit can one-shot a mob but yours can't even graze it, the only possible explanation is that the real damage being dealt to the mob is not 100 either. This reasoning actually explains why, unlike in diablo 3, this game straight up refuses to give us the numerical HP values of mobs: it can't give the real values because those have not taken scaling into account yet, and it can't give the fake values either to avoid breaking the illusion that your damage numbers are real (as it would only require 2 people in party with different levels to notice that the mob HP doesn't match and therefore is fake). You may also look at an old post I made last year talking about this: https://www.reddit.com/r/diablo4/comments/1435n75/are_damagehp_numbers_in_this_game_actually_fake/

gnawingrat

Thank you for that explanation. Is the any weird scaling or health changes in CO OP when you and your friends are the same level? Say you're both 100 and you're fighting level 150 enemies. Damage numbers would might sense and line up with the enemies health pool right?

Shadowfury22

Yeah, the only way to make anything useful out of these numbers is by establishing a baseline (for instance, being at level 100).

SaigonJon

Donā€™t know why I never thought to turn them off. I donā€™t pay attention to them and there is so much clutter, I donā€™t know whatā€™s what anyway. I look at the bars if it doesnā€™t die in one hit anyway.

CrackerUMustBTripinn

That reminds me of my favorite bit of dialogue from Star Trek, where Data announces they'll be arriving at planet bleep blop 7 in 13 days 5 hours 14 minutes and 27 seconds, at which Will Riker asks Data: 'How many seconds did you say?'

gtcru2

Didnā€™t realize that was an option. I never pay attention to the numbers anyway.

GeneralAnubis

I absolutely despise the number spam, it's extremely immersion breaking. Like playing DnD and the DM just says how many HP the monster has left in a fight instead of describing how beaten up the monster looks. I would turn them on to check damage after making a build change or comparing items, but then right back off after the tests.

DiscountThug

I couldn't see shit with those damage numbers flying all over screen. If shit dies fast, i don't need to know how big the damage was

cokyno

I cant understand how somebody plays with them being turned on.. jezus christ so much clutter and spam on screen.. and for what?

Oily_Bee

I use them when leveling but then turn them off once my build is going.

martyw1123

Completely agree. I turned mine off in S2 when I mained a BL Sorc. You don't need to see numbers when you're obliterating everything, so I turned them off and it made the game SOO much more enjoyable, visually. Fast forward to S3 and I just didn't turn them on. Mained a Druid (Lightning Storm in human form until I got Tempest Roar) and then made a Penshot Rogue alt. If you're clearing content, you don't need to see the numbers. The only content you can "push" right now is NMD/V, so you just keep upping the level until you can't clear.

GideonOakwood

I always play with all numbers and statuses off. I also changed the outline of enemies to gray as it makes it almost disappear. I like immersion in games and anything that makes me feel a bit more like I am in the world is always a plus

Craigiebob

I'm sure you can just turn enemy outlines off, I put player outline on and set it to black, makes my char stand out more.

GideonOakwood

If you find a way to do it let me know cause I tried a few things and you are forced to have it on to know which monster you are targeting

mini_lord

Yes and I would like to be able to remove more things from the screen, especially during combat. For example, item names staying visible because I click on the monster nearby is really painful.

terpjuice

I turned them off at launch before I ever moved my character. Really glad itā€™s an option.

[deleted]

once your build is finished, there's no reason to have the obnoxious numbers on. I played most of S3 with numbers off, and it's a game-changer.

Kenshin_cz

I cannot imagine why would somebody play with it turned on.

Aksurah_

I turn off numbers on any game. I don't think I've ever looked at them. They just get in the way. Who cares if you do 10 damage to something with 100 HP or 100 damage to something with 1000 HP? Most games scale appropriately to make you feel like a badass by the time you've earned it. Numbers literally do nothing for the experience. The bar depletes in the same chunks regardless of whether or not I know what arbitrary number was assigned to it.Ā

heartlessphil

Turned them off on day 1, as well as all monsters highlights. More immersive.

chadsmo

Damage numbers off as well as turning off the ā€˜Iā€™m in need of more manaā€™ ā€˜I need more furyā€™ etc nonsense your character says.

Bruddah827

Play zoomed in!

chadsmo

I do this for fun now and then, man itā€™s a good looking game up close.

Bruddah827

Really is! If Iā€™m just doing simple whispers, Iā€™ll run it like that for awhile. Until my vertigo starts up!

jugalator

I would personally have enjoyed if the pace was taken down a notch, with item drops improved to compensate so essentially nothing is lost over time. It's just that they spent so much time on this and the art is perhaps the best part of Diablo 4, yet the packs of monsters, how they look and act barely even register before they're dead.

mohrbius

Going to try this next time I boot it up!

Cayorus

Text and numbers my friend.

Zorotriswords

How do you turn them off?

epicflex

I turned them off in WoW hahaha, so much less clutter

DreadBehemoth

I play with small police so I can still see my big numbers and what's on screen

NeonMisfit666

With what?

Embarrassed-Rub-8690

Ty, especially on Ally with the small screen this is awesome.

-Rhialto-

For a long time already and tried to tell everyone about this just like you did... My post must be a few weeks away.

arsonist_firefighter

To each their own, 3/4 of my dopamine is seeing big numbers.

Oofric_Stormcloak

I like damage numbers. Something about just seeing dozens on screen for some reason satisfy my monkey brain. It's actually the main reason I decided to go ball lightning sorc last season, and that turned out to be a great idea haha.

ThereIsNoHopeForUs

Thx for the suggestionĀ

SpartanBamBam

Sorry I'm the weirdo that obsessively likes seeing the numbers.

nfefx

I'd like to keep the numbers and get rid of 200X "VULNERABLE" but the technology just isn't there yet.

DaddySanctus

I generally will turn them on briefly for a bit after making numerous changes. My ideal would be to have damage numbers, with no status effects, and the ability to tweak the text of the damage numbers for size / opacity, etc.

bschneid93

Iā€™d mostly agree but there is a use to seeing the numbers because it gives better idea of where youā€™re at when swapping builds since thereā€™s no recount add-on (like WoW has). You can see how often youā€™re critting etc it helps when making small refines to your build

FunkyTuna714

How do I do that?

Caederis

I show damage numbers when I'm tinkering with my builds, and turn them off once I'm happy with my choices.

YouCanDoItHot

I played D3 with it off for years, then friends made fun of me, so I turned them back on. I'll try D4 without them next season.

Malakai0013

I like to see them while I'm building a critical strike champ. Once I'm getting crits with every other hit, I don't need them and keep them off.

I_made_a_stinky_poop

the damage equations are so arcane and convoluted that I need to know whether i'm doing 5-15% more damage or not when i switch gear to know if what I got was an upgrade. No way I'm going to be able to tell just by looking at health bars moving. It would be nice if there was a way to see your damage without the number spam, but you simply can't actually do that, unless there are addons i'm unaware of.

downeverythingvote_i

if you can't tell that you're killing things 15% faster then you definitely do not need numbers

I_made_a_stinky_poop

you won't be able to tell either. Promise.

aaron_dresden

Yep I turned them off. It really improved the gameplay.

xander-mcqueen1986

Never tried that. Thanks for the tip.

Caregiver-Physical

They trigger my adhd. I donā€™t think I would play as much without them. But Iā€™m glad itā€™s a setting we can all change.

SugaCereal

Only time I use damage numbers is if I compare perks, aspects, etc. All the other time, off they go! Did not need them in D2, me no needs them in D4.

invidious07

Yeah turned then off day one. Meaningless and barely legible.

vagrantwade

I like the numbers because it helps me with min maxing and can help with identifying cooldown pops.

theangryfurlong

Asmongold on suicide alert

greenchair11

i would also like the option to hide the status text (vuln, etc), but keep damage numbers

shakelikejello

I forgot they existed. Havenā€™t used them since beta

That-Location-8487

This is the way. Been playing like this since the game came put

LordWitherhoard

Yup I turned them off day 1 lol never needed them. If things die then Iā€™m good, if not then try something else. Never had an issue lol

Dense_Penalty_3194

There is also an option to disable negative sounds like no mana, can't do that etc.

CallMeThiccolas

Yup. Came to d4 after D2 and turned them off immediately. Also went to PoE more happily with them off. Turned them off on last epoch when I got it last week. I love these games just going off of pages of stat values and seeing hp bars for down. Idc for big combat numbers. I also love them off on games like monster hunter

ELKSfanLeah

Oooooo, haha, I am gonna try that tomorrow!!!!

Beserker-VX9-

Call me a noob, but i didnā€™t even know this was an option! I have to try it

Danilo_____

There is a way to turn off the selection borders on the enemies? I changed the color from red to black, so it becomes less anoying.. but sometimes I still see it. The game is beautifull and i think this should be a option, play with minimal UI

theinsanescat

i always turn off numbers, text (such as "Vulnerable") and error voice lines in such games

Perun_Thrallstrider

This is true

AnswerApprehensive

i turned it off months ago and i am happy. to be honest i dont get why people like to clutter up their screen with 345345 numeric texts.

th3orist

i wish they would also give me the option to turn off combat text too, imho the more important option.

Nekela

From launch I played with dmg numbers off and HP off, it was such a beautiful game without all those floating bars and numbers everywhere

Arctic88

I turned it off when i couldnt see the monsters anymore, it was amazing!!

Minute_Ad2642

I turned it off too, i put it on when I test a new build to see if itā€™s up to par, then I turn it off :)

FemmEllie

Always remove them if I can, they just clutter up the screen for no reason. If I want to know how much damage I do I can check it out briefly for a test run but certainly no reason to have it on all the time

Capital_Test7896

I started w mine off. Didn't even know you could turn them on

KennedyPh

The screen looks less Custered

Meesterjako

I like the numbers. As a rpg fan for atleast 30 years, the numbers are something i love. Even if i dont look at it that much, it just adds something for me. Dunno if its nostalgia or something, but i like the numbers on my screen.

Lokynet

Is it possible to allow only crits and overpower damage? It would make it really clean and still allow me to feel good seeing a big number popping out occasionally

Nurnburg

I just wish there were more filter options for displaying damage numbers. Like show just crits or overpower only would be nice. Could see big hit numbers if you wanted but not have everything vomited across the screen all the time.

fortheculture303

CRIT and overpower only would be nice

skewp

I honestly can't tell you if I even have damage numbers on without logging in. Are they on or off by default? D3 trained me to ignore the numbers because they were so large as to be completely meaningless. I just watched for the yellow text that meant I'd gotten a crit and didn't really process the value of the numbers.

Hecatonrusx

No.

Ambitious_Cicada9263

I had even adjusted other things in the settings (JFC the "error audio") and hadn't realized the numbers could go away. At this point I can feel the difference between "oh this weapon is fast" and "oh this weapon hits hard" and decide which feels better for moving through enemies, especially as someone who really builds a character in their head to go with the little person on the screen. Diablo is a stunning game, sometimes I'll zoom in for awhile just to enjoy it (or look at stuff while waiting for a WB) but I can't manage to play it that close. As much as everyone is excited to get a further zoom out, I'd love something closer without zooming all the way in. I like being able to see all the textures but I feel like it is a little too limited in range to be playable when you're not going with max builds and just having fun.

theschadowknows

I had not even considered doing that before, but I just turned them off and I immediately 100% donā€™t miss them.

Frippery-Futz-0412

Turned them off day 1 and never looked back.

krismate

Yup, never understood why people leave them on. I turn them on for testing purposes and comparing builds etc. but once I know that info, there's literally zero need for them.

Panda_Bunnie

The same reason ppl turn it off, its literally personal perference.

Matrixneo42

Good idea. Ruins my joke though (that we just spend time in the dungeons so we can seek out generating larger and larger numbers)

nauseous01

Yeah i tried it once, didnt like it so i turned them back on.

tomtom872872

Big numbers= big happy

Particular-Act-8911

If you work hard on your build, you definitely want to see those numbers.

vee_6

Never liked numbers popping out of enemies in games, always felt retarded, no idea why. For some reason it didnā€™t bother me in Neverwinter Nights, but otherwise a good ol health bar like in Diablo 2 is just about right.

MissAnthropy612

I barely even notice them. Maybe because I use almost exclusively ranged attacks?

panthers1102

The numbers are WHY I play

yuch1102

Nah I need those juicy crit numbers and I get a sense of progression when those numbers go up lol

danisamused

Iā€™m addicted to damage numbers. Games without them annoy me. Iā€™ve no idea why

PublicPretender

It's one of the things I don't like about Path of Exile. That and no pants.

Brawlstar112

idk the big numbers are like 95% for me in arpg games

UndeadMunchies

Good. More numbers for me.

Shermy10

i like to see the 267 million dmg come up on my screen when im basically one-shotting a world boss but thats just mešŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

Jadis

On for any builds that do really high damage attacks like hota and off for others

shah2_3

Thank you for posting. Probably this is the best post of this day!

CheechmoOfficial

Ball lightning sorc this is a must

Such_Performance229

I actually like the damage numbers. Makes everything feel much crazier and chaotic

norhor

Yeah, same here. It's also makes it easier to see if you miss.

Z--370

For some reason I feel addicted to the big yellow blob on top of my arc lightning source. I wanna turn it off, but canā€™t
