The simplest answer is yes you can jump right in. The more complicated answer is yes, but there will be two minor characters in this book that will look very different from the versions of them you meet when you start their respective series. But when I say they are minor in this book I mean minor. So just go for it and have fun.

weird_goodbye

Epic ty :)

NoNameLivesForever

I think it'll actually make the book a bit more enjoyable. You won't know those characters, so you won't have any idea what they're up to...

weird_goodbye

Neat

FandomReferenceHere

Oh my gooooooodddssssss you are going to have so much fun. Monstrous Regiment is Pratchett at his absolute best. If you end up reading Monstrous Regiment before Guards! Guards!, please come back and tell us what you think! I’d be fascinated to know how you view [character] if you saw him in MR first (which is later in his life) and then jumped back to his first appearance in GG. There’s no wrong way to do it :-)

weird_goodbye

o7 (salute icon) will do

Briham86

Monstrous Regiment is mostly stand-alone. There are some characters and concepts that it might be useful to have already been introduced to, but happily, Going Postal covers most of them, so there shouldn’t be much confusion.

weird_goodbye

:) ty

wgloipp

It's probably the best stand alone one there is.

destroy_b4_reading

I'm partial to Soul Music personally, but that's more due to my own non-literary interests. Purely objectively speaking, yeah, MR is probably the best one-shot.

Doomscrolleuse

Small Gods is at least in contention!

Smellynerfherder

Yes! Do it immediately. Knowledge of the minor characters isn't essential to the enjoyment of the plot, but will add richness when - not if - you reread it.

weird_goodbye

Lol ok ty

ernieball2221

You will be fine

weird_goodbye

Yay

ikheberookeen

I read it as stand alone as well, still think about it sometimes. One of the best Discworld books for me. I should do a re-read.

weird_goodbye

Nice, ty

RRC_driver

Whilst it does stand alone, "the truth" would be a useful pre read.

weird_goodbye

Good to know, ty

karmagirl314

Monstrous Regiment was the first Discworld book I ever read and I have no regrets.

weird_goodbye

I’m getting hyped

NT-W

Could someone spoiler tag me the characters that show up elsewhere because I genuinely can't remember any reappearing again.

Fantastic-Task634

Spoiler below! Not sure if I've done the tags correctly so here is a very long winded way of saying there is a spoiler below incase it didn't work. (spoiler) the minor character in monsterous regiment is vimes. Once you know him his very small part is so much funnier. (/Spoiler)

cmzraxsn

if you're on mobile, type \>! !< around the spoiler. if not there's a button to do it.

cmzraxsn

It's one of the most standalone, among the later books.
