The first time I read this bit, the bit where he sings: the PHAN-tom of the Opera is here popped straight into my head
Also, the aria where she’s complaining about the door sticking always makes me think of the start of La Boheme, where it sounds so beautiful and it’s them bitching about their landlord and how cold they are
The lyrics to Iodine's aria fit perfectly to the score of Handel's Lascia Ch'io Pianga aria from Rinaldo. When I first read the book, I heard it to that tune in my head.
This book contains a great joke. The chandelier is....just there the entire book. Just there....
...and it never falls.
They comment on it at the end, calling it "all too dramatic" looking or something.
Loved that book.
To be fair, it doesn’t drop because Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax prevent the opera ghost from dropping it on the audience. It was the obvious disaster that they prevented.
This was one of my first Discworld novels (I read them in order of which was available at the public library that week) and I was 15 and deeply in my Phantom/musical theater phase, so it still holds a special spot in my heart.

He's a funny sort of spectre to expect a large retainer
Nothing plainer, he is really quite insane
Where is she?
You mean Carlotta?
I mean miss daaé!, where is she?
Well, how should we know?
I want an answer!
I take it that you sent me this note
Of course not!
Don't look at us 🤷♀️

Interesting! I haven’t heard that one (although I love Handel). I will look into it

Anytime a chekovs gun happens in anything else, I always think of that damn chandelier. All that build up and the damn beat never drops...

Well it never falls, but that *was* the plan. They were going to drop the chandelier, but they were stopped.
Far too many notes for my taste
Most of them about Christine!
These are both signed OG
Who the HELL is he???
......Opera Ghost!
I love Maskerade so much
Just to note that for this passage to exist STP had to sit down and *write* a maniacal laugh.
And 5 exclamation marks ...

I found a copy of Maskerade in a second hand bookshop the other day -- looking forward to getting into that one!
