If he's an archer: tripping attack, disarming attack, goading attack, menacing attack, pushing attack, and maybe maneuvering attack.

All great options here^ Just wanted to add Rally to the mix, depending on the PC's Cha score it can also be useful and specifically only grants the temp HP to other people. Seems a fitting choice for someone devoted to protecting an ally.

Actually any will do, (except the melee choices) but goading strike is a fun one on range because it can force a creature to attack you or attack his surroundings with disadvantage (forcing to switch weapons perhaps) But disarming, trip, pushing and rallying might be good fits too. Come to think of it, I might have found my favorite type of martial. The ranger which isn’t in 5e 🤘

Thank you!

Disarming + tripping is my go to for my ranged battlemaster. I also use distracting on that character a lot. But thats because it plays well with the rogue when your fighting something big that won't go prone.

Maneuvering attack could give this person being protected a chance to move out of difficult situations

Menacing guarantees disadvantage on all attacks and checks while in line of sight for the target. Tripping will grant melee allies advantage and ground flying enemies. Maneuvering can be nice but it depends if the other player character has fairly free reactions, because the maneuvering strike can't be used without the beneficiary's reaction. Same with Commander's. Precise will help you ensure your sharpshooter hits connect, and the best defense can sometimes be a strong offense. To mix things up, if you end up moving into melee (finesse time!), bait and switch can help keep them alive and parry can help keep you alive.
