1st, Beefalo Hat to avoid aggro. Never take it out until the mating season ends or your beefalo becomes fully tamed
2nd. If i remember correctly, a beefalo in heat have teh buck timer set to a 1/3 of the normal time.. If you started late autumm, you should be over 75%, so you should at least have 30s of buck timer. It will be anoying, but with that timer you can still move the idols
3rd Don't bring any follower, chester, glommer, anything. They can't use a beefalo hat and the beefalo will be hostile to them during mating season
If you've started taming it in late autumn, it should be almost tamed, so... just feed it. Twig + 3 fillers gives you steamed twigs, 100 hunger for beefalo, and they need 300 hunger a day.
Basically Beefalos reproduce every spring or so. There only needs to be one for the "process" to happen and since you started taming that beefalo and separated it from its herd you might see like 2 or 3 more
