Rainy days are my best days

By-the-order

I think it is because you get a bunch of people who are normally to cheap to use DD.

Artistabunnista

I tend to make more money on rainy days but I multi-app and UE tends to pay better on bad weather days. That's because there's less drivers or drivers are more likely to cancel orders for whatever reason so it boosts a lot of the pay up. I haven't really seen this happen on DD. I've never gotten a really good base pay order with DD vs UE I have. Just yesterday I had a $43 order, $35 base and $8 tip. It was cuz they are out of an item and the previous driver cancelled the order rather than just calling the customer to see what they could replace it with. Sucks for them, yay for me :). And this tends to happen quite a bit on rainy days.

NotPeachy420

I'm gonna try UE next time it rains, thanks!!

Artistabunnista

You're welcome! Mind you every area is different so don't quote me on it, that's just what it's like in my own area šŸ˜…

snurps

That's actually when I make my best money

Instacartdoctor

Nice people (sometimes) don't order when they know someone's gonna be taking a risk in their car to get them food.

woodsongtulsa

Their phone will get wet if they pull it out to tip

TreatDangerous3265

Because the evil witches that can't get wet start ordering DD

Runner525

I make better money on rainy days, but itā€™s probably because thereā€™s less traffic and a little busier. Tips are about the same as a nice day.

Kyleforshort

Perhaps you're expecting a larger tip when it's raining simply because it's raining. While that would be a nice gesture, being out in the elements is just part of the gig.

NotPeachy420

I agree it's part of the job, I was just saying I seem to get tipped less when it's raining than normal weather anx was wondering if others also experienced that

Kyleforshort

I personally don't think tipping or lack thereof is based on anything besides the fact that the entire tipping structure for app delivery services is completely broken.

chance0404

He said less tip. I always make more in tips when itā€™s raining

Kyleforshort

It literally says he's expecting and thinks customers should tip more based upon inclement weather.

NotPeachy420

I was saying I get less tips when it's raining than during normal weather. also I'm a girl šŸ˜‚

Kyleforshort

Yes, and that you should be getting more because of the weather. I can read. šŸ˜Ž

chance0404

I misread your comment. I thought you were saying heā€™s getting a larger tip when itā€™s raining simply because itā€™s raining. My bad. Most of my customers do tip better due to the rain and usually the ones who donā€™t are also the ones with flooded, muddy driveways/yards and properties that could be legitimately described as a safety hazard.

Kyleforshort

All good.

revert_cowgirl

Theyā€™re less likely to be drinking.

RedditCEO3000

It probably means people who normally don't order because the fees are outrageous are ordering since the weather is bad and they're tipping like garbage.

Cosmic_Quasar

Same for winter in MN. There are more bad offers, but the good offers are even better.

No-Student-446

Makes most sense

MediumCharge580

This is exactly it. When itā€™s raining, it just means more shitty orders. There are definitely people that are tipping more because itā€™s raining but the shitty tipping first timers outweigh them by a lot.

ariannaswim

Rain money is the best moniessss

___Azu____

Could also be less drivers as well, but I am uncertain

ChemicallySquared

I think because their order probably sits there unless thereā€™s a dasher whoā€™s willing to go through possible flood and heavy rain.. a customer I took was $8 for a decent 5 miles and he tipped $20 because he didnā€™t expect anybody to pick it up

Dancing_star338

I remember one time i had to wait an hour for someone to get my food and i was tipping 15 bucks

ChemicallySquared

I hate when doordash hides all the people who deserve it. Weā€™re either paused bc of the non tippers or just taking what we can get

Dancing_star338

Yeah pretty much

Etherbeard

Regular customers who are good tippers probably do tend to tip a little better when it's raining, but you get a lot people ordering who wouldn't order otherwise. These additional customers don't tend to tip well; they're irritated at having to spend extra money bc they don't want to go out or they're first time customers that don't necessarily realize that all the fees they're paying aren't helping compensate the driver. You're also hopefully driving a bit slower, so you can take fewer deliveries in the same amount of time. What this means is that if you're chasing acceptance rating, you will likely make less money than usual. If you're cherry picking you can make more, but you will have to dig through more bad orders. The thing is, even if you can make 20 or 30 percent more money, it's not worth assuming a thousand percent more risk. I don't work in the rain unless I absolutely have to.

followyourvalues

I find the opposite true and I live where it rains a lot.

Creative-Might6342

Really?! I'm sorry to hear about where you are located. Where I'm at, it's better when it's raining

SuperMadBro

I'm the same as OP. My theory is people with the mindset of "I want to get my own food but it's gross out" are the worst tippers. They just wish it was nice so they could enjoy their time out. Vs people who already would have used the app anyway but see that it's shitty out are just extra thankful that their dasher is there to do it for then in even worse weather

TrashMouthPanda

Same, I make bank when it's raining

GuidoSarducci82

That's my experience, as well. We have a line of storms blowing through Kansas City tonight and I'm looking forward to it lol

QT314KT

We arent in KC but we are in the same storm system. Did you get a text from Doordash today saying something like we're tracking weather in your area and we'll notify of temporarily halting operations?

AZPHX602

There's good people in life and there's bad people in life. I have a story, I used to deliver pizza and there was one customer who I always delivered to. He was a really nice guy. Always had the light on for you and tipped You really well. One day, I am waiting for my deliveries to get ready in the store. I look over and he is at the counter. I kindly asked him why he didn't get his pizza delivered today. He told me I didn't think it was fair for someone to come out in this bad weather to deliver to him.

Puzzleheaded_Art1252

I had this happen also. It was during a very light snow. I explained to her thatā€™s all the reason more for us to deliver to you. I told her we appreciate the sweet tips she gives so itā€™s absolutely not a problem to deliver to her and family. Explained to her that I would deliver to her during a hurricane-tornado-monsoon while a volcano was exploding. The next delivery to her never happened as a molten rock hit her in the vagina and she died.

AZPHX602

I said the very same thing to the sky as well.

Puzzleheaded_Art1252

šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

AZPHX602

Speech to text. šŸ¤£

Puzzleheaded_Art1252

Youā€™re funnyšŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

Rooskibar03

It rains to much in your market and people don't care? I know here in the desert when its raining my ass it out driving cause people do not want to go out. Same goes for pretty much any weather conditions where the sun isnt shining. I was born into weather so it doesn't bother me and I make bank on those nights.

Scottyboy626

They put the extra money in their.. rainy day fund..

treethugger69

*Buh dum tss*

Dekloren

What? I get on my knees and thank baby Jesus everytime it rains! I feel like a fat kid at a candy shop freedom to pick and choose my orders even more since the mopeds are all rained in šŸ¤£ I make a killing in the rain šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

RWBUntilDeath

I wouldnā€™t know, they tip more here when it rains

GrayPal184

I know some people love the rainy days, but this is how it is in my area with rain bringing constant terrible orders. Main reasons are more kids using parents accounts so they donā€™t tip and more drivers taking anything because they were told that rainy days are great, which customers realize they can skimp on bidding for service. This is fine for cherry pickers but terrible for trying to stay on the high tiers. But this is why orders are a market for service, so I just skip and wait for when priority works in my favor

sdgus68

People that don't want to pay the fees or tip the driver are willing to pay the fees when the weather is bad.

Human-Temperature404

This makes a lot of sense.

Affectionate-Art-995

In the PNW it rains for 9 months and when it's raining super hard customers actually tip better so I consider myself fortunate. And we just have great customers šŸ˜ƒ

usmcBrad93

Has some kid (maybe early teenager) tip me 1 cent in a downpour. His food was waiting for me at a fancy Ramen spot, and it wasn't very hot anymore, always a red flag. He had no overhang on his door and his steps were getting drenched. As it was "leave at my door" that's what I did seeing someone peaking thru the blinds. As I completed the order and was ready to call the customer quickly just to make sure, I see the .01 tip. I sat there in my car for a whole minute while his food was getting cold rained on, he was afraid to come outside. When he did, he refused to look my direction. This was a good day for Earn by time with tips, but this outlier really went out of his way to try ruining my day.

lazymutant256

Iā€™m pretty sure weather has nothing to do with how much they tip, if they do t tip much, Itā€™s likly they wouldnā€™t tip much either when Itā€™s a nice day.

Here2readurmind

I dashed the other day during a Thunderstorm Warning. I only did it because 1. It looked like the storm would be over soon and 2. They had a live promo of $1 added to every order. I was not impressed at all. For just trying to see how it would go, I found it makes no difference on the weather and tipping and people have no shame and no care for others in general. Iā€™m standing there soaking wet, literally dripping off me and itā€™s ALWAYS the non-tipping customers that want it handed to them.

Affectionate-Art-995

Sad. And they probably have family in the service industry

sharky3175

Yep. Yesterday it was raining and every order was 3 to 5 dollars

Alive_Revenue6897

It seems like it's about the same with or without rain for me. One time every order was a big tipper when there was sudden torrential rain. I've also had more increased tips when weather gets really bad during a delivery.

Later2theparty

Those are people who couldn't really afford to get a delivery and just don't want to go out in the rain.

No_Cellist_8441

This.

SelectDay802

customers do not always tip less in the rain.

NotPeachy420

I know it's not always lol, it's just a trend I've noticed in my area and was curious if other people have had the same issue is all :)

Sensitive_Option3136

Are you know observing this at restaurants, or fast food places?

Old-Teacher149

I absolutely have this same experience in my area. (Could totally be random coincidence and sample bias etc etc...) But it's gotten to the point where I just don't go out on rainy days cuz every low/no tip offer triggers me so much more when it's raining lol

SelectDay802

i think more lazy people order in the rain. the tippers tip better but thereā€™s more of the non tippers in bad weather

Mr_Weird4866

They don't tip less. It is just more customers ordering. Being patient is key.

RedditPosterOver9000

Yup. Every $2 offer you accept is a bare minimum of 10-15 minutes of not being able to accept good orders.

Googlesbot

I think there is just more orders from people that don't normally order food, because it's raining and the don't want to get wet. as for why they tip less, could be ignorance of how the system works, lack of empathy you name it. But yeah i don't dash as much in storms as i used to, i feel like the risk is higher for little to no reward, higher risk of accidents, CV's ect.

MindlessReport8914

Because they are prissy little sh@&! who canā€™t get wet and want their food 15 minutes after orderingā€¦ those kinda people donā€™t tip because they see DoorDash as an entitlement not a luxury. Yesā€¦ it it noticeable where I Dash. On rainy days I decline more orders than normal. What makes up for it is the customers who textā€¦ Thank You for driving in the rainā€¦ be safe.

jcoddinc

Weather has a big affect on emotions in many people. When it's rainy and dreary out people can get cranky meaning them less generous.

Tight-Young7275

So you are saying I should just kill myself to avoid the hell of being trapped with actual animals. I agree.

Usuxbutt

I always run out to work the snow/rain storms. Itā€™s always busier for me. I think thereā€™s less dashers out. Idk about higher tips, but definitely more orders.

Other-Classroom-6136

Same here and people seem calmer

ZeefMcSheef

I usually make more money when itā€™s raining šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

Ok-Space2169

People who tip well feel bad ordering food while it's nasty outside and making the dasher go out in it. People who don't tip well don't think about it or don't care.

kyabupaks

This. I'm a dasher and I always stay at home when there's a bad snowstorm, so my wife hesitates to order from GrubHub when the weather is bad. She'd have a craving during a storm and asks me every damn time that she would feel bad if she endangers a driver by ordering food. I told her every time that it's okay to order because these drivers made the choice to do it. Because I made the choice to stay home doesn't mean other drivers feel the same way. Just tip more than you usually do and that'll make it worthwhile for the driver. She's a very generous tipper, so when she tips more than usual... believe me, the driver will be VERY happy. She usually orders from a Chinese food place two miles from our house and typically tips $10. She ups it to $20 during heavy rain or snowstorms.

Meatballs4all1

This is the answer. Weather used to mean better tips and more orders. It doesnā€™t anymore, the only people ordering are the crappy tippers, quality customers donā€™t order in bad weather. At least thatā€™s how itā€™s become in my area.

NotPeachy420

that sounds about right

Mike787619

Same experience here. What Iā€™ve noticed is the regular customers who tip well typically donā€™t order, or at least I donā€™t get their orders,Ā In the rain.Ā  I think the rain makes the decent tippers feel bad about ordering or something.

Grumdord

>I think the rain makes the decent tippers feel bad about ordering or something. I'd bet good money this is the explanation most of the time. People with empathy probably just don't order delivery when the weather is shitty.

the-mare-bear

I feel bad about drivers trying to hurry with poor visibility and slick roads, then having to get soaked to bring the food up. I just wait until the weather improves.

Jazzlike_Property692

I wouldn't be surprised if it's because there are more people who would normally have gotten their food themselves resorting to ordering in because of the weather. And, of course, those people don't always tip well. You should expect more orders, not more tips.

NotPeachy420

that would make sense, but I'm less busy as well. I wonder if more people are dashing when it rains, so I get both less orders along with people tipping less. idk šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Recent-Imagination-8

I don't know. I've seen plenty of Dashers here advise others to Dash in the rain, but I've never noticed an increase in tips (or an increase in any money at all).
