Generally it’s pretty dependent on the facility that you’re being housed in. For instance in the county I live in there’s three (four technically I guess but the 4th is all protective custody) separate housing facilities.
Where I live (central California) “Pre-Trial” which is basically big two-tiered cell blocks where you’re in a cell with one other person and allowed out into the day room from like 6:30AM until 10/11PM, with 2 or 3 30-45min lockdowns during the day for headcount. Politics in that facility are sort of mediumish.
Then there’s another facility that used to be barracks for the Air Force decades back. That facility is all dorm style living, like 80-160 guys per dorm, you can always go work on the hog farm or in the kitchens. However there’s a strict “no politics” policy there, which doesn’t really prevent it entirely but it’s the mellowest place you can be housed.
Then there’s an extremely notorious place that’s most commonly referred to as “31” (although there’s also 32, 40, 41, and 42). The set up is similar to Pretrial however inmates are two to a cell and they are locked down inside for 23 1/2 hours per day. It was 23 hours until a couple years ago when the violence between the woods and the Sureños became so intense that now they only allow one demographic out for 15 minutes at a time. Meaning you have just 15 minutes to attempt to use the phone, or shower, or trade ramen or whatever else you need to do. Politics there are a big fucking deal. Despite the fact that everyone is locked down the cells are connected via air vents that you will be expecting to communicate through.
If you don’t do the exercises that your shotcaller is directing you to do, someone else WILL see that through the tiny window in the cell door and next time that door pops open for your 15 minutes you’re probably going to get jumped or shanked or thrown off the tier. 31 is so rough that the guards don’t even go down into the cell block unless they come in numbers.
Like at Pretrial and the other place the guards have like a little office/desk you can walk up to and talk to them, then walk around and check shit out and talk to people. In 31 they sit in a big plexiglass bubble that overlooks everything and they avoid walking through the cell block unless they absolutely have to.
LA County (not where I live but I had the misfortune of getting stuck in there once) politics are fucking NUTS too. It’s insane how massive LA County jail is, it’s the largest county jail in the US and some people say it’s far worse than prison.
So it definitely has a lot to do with the area of the state/country you’re being held in and the other inmates.
Ayyy I spent a few months in county jail. Not that bad honestly. A little boring but if you get a decent block most of the time you’re just watching TV and playing poker.
Food is ASS though so have someone you know who can put some money on your books for commissary if you want to eat anything that isn’t dog food.
Just take your shoes off before you enter the cell and be respectful of your Cellie until you get a decent read on them.
