This. If we drafted Kool Aid one of Mitchell or Kool Aid would have to wait a year to make an impact. In a year where we are gunning for a title Mitchell can make an impact as a CB and DeJean can as a “defensive weapon.”
I also think they like Ringo's potential upside, so if he can put it together and be a starter this year or next, and going forward, DeJean becomes a really valuable chess piece they can deploy wherever is best, based on matchups.
Fangio is gonna Blitz Dejean and/or Devin White and drop an End into coverage.
Edit: not that He is gonna start this year but that’s probably why he likes Jalyx Hunt, previous Safety experience, can probably drop into coverage better than most edge rushers (or thats the idea)
Slipping edge rushers into coverage isn't a bad idea in general, if your coordinators are good and the combo of scheme and execution work.
Look at the best defenses in the league last year, they all do it. It was super effective against good QBs when done well at delaying their decision making processes and causing confusion. A half second delay creates sacks or allows safeties to join CBs in coverage. That creates + opportunities for the defense and turnovers.
Philosophically, we fucked up. Staffing-wise, we fucked up. Lurie and Howie wanted someone who could keep the scheme status quo with Gannon ditching us at the worst time. Status quo kept us behind, ramping up Desai made us fall further behind rather than innovating. This was the year defenses evolved the most in ages.
Yeah we will see how it goes.
One projected Positive that I see this year is that Howie made a concerted effort to not Only get Younger on the defensive side of the ball but also draft guys that from all accounts are High IQ coachable kids. Both Mitchell and DeJean have this reputation from their times at Toledo and Iowa, their head coaches all say they are the smartest hardest working guys they have coached with the most talent. Hell even in Mitchell’s interview on draft night he said “I need to be coached hard”. Based on what Reed Blankenship said last year about the young guys like Ringo and Brown, most of our previous draft picks are also highly coachable.
One of the big issues with Fangio down in Miami was he was attempting to coach a more old school “my way or the highway” fashion to established vets. Some of them didn’t necessarily fit schematically into a complex zone Systems. I think Fangio really needs a young crop of talented high Iq players to succeed with his scheme. Im not saying there wont be growing pains, there definitely will. But i think the organization really took a multi faceted approach to tailoring this defense to Fangio’s needs as a coach, the players needs as rookies, and the teams needs as a whole on defense.
Heres to hoping it all meshes together .
while desai wasn't the answer, he didn't have much to work with. patricia was worse in even metric compared to when desai ran the defense. desai wasn't at fault.
Desai was still a problem. Idk exactly how, because it was mostly during the week/behind closed doors stuff, but he lost the locker room somehow. And that’s a locker room with Fletch and BG and Slay as veteran leaders. So it’s not like it was some locker room of young or immature or diva guys who couldn’t get along. That was a good locker room. So it says a lot that they turned on Desai.
I will agree that Desai didn’t have enough to work with between lots of roster turnover, lacking talent\*, and lots of injuries. He (and Patricia even more so) was criticized for dropping Reddick into coverage too much, but it wasn’t him being cute (although that’s how Sirianni tried to spin it).
It was because the linebackers were dog shit, and they often needed 5 defensive linemen on likely running plays (based on offensive personnel or down/distance). Offenses eventually exploited this by going run personnel/formation but motioning and passing. That forced us to have to drop a lineman into coverage. And Sweat was way worse in coverage than Reddick, so it was more often Reddick. So it was very predictable… a problem with the 2023 team on both sides of the ball.
But dropping Reddick into coverage wasn’t the coaches trying to be cute and being outplayed. It was them trying to compensate for bad linebackers, which worked a little until teams started exploiting it. We didn’t have the best personnel for a Fangio style defense last year, and Desai was an inexperienced coach trying to run a Fangio defense. Perhaps a different DC could’ve gotten much better results from last year’s roster and found better ways to compensate for the lack of any linebacker talent.
\*regarding the lacking talent, it’s not always super easy to say how much is coaching and how much is scheme. Putting guys in the wrong position (scheme) will make them look worse. Not teaching them enough or well enough (coaching) will make them look worse. The Patriots almost always had great linebacker units during their dynasty run, and they didn’t really ever sign any big FA LBs or draft them really high. It was a combination of good talent evaluation and good coaching and scheming. In a league where you can’t pay top dollar to every position group, linebacker is still a good one to try to save cap space. But that doesn’t mean you ignore it. You still have to invest money in the position in scouting and coaching.
On an unrelated note, another weakness this team had that made them less compatible with the Fangio scheme and the newer split base, box and triangle, Cover 0, and Cover 8 trends as safety play. I liked the Jordan Davis pick and I think he can be a very good player in this league one day....but since that draft I've felt like we were going to regret not taking Kyle Hamilton and that feeling has only grown. He could be the crown jewel of this new era of defense with the way he fits physically and mentally into the role.
A lot of Ringo hype. I hope it pans out but I don't see a path to being a starter this year.
I don't think the Eagles have a plan yet though so how can any of us know
Oh, yeah, he'd have to make a big leap, but he's athletic, he competes, and he seems willing to work. I thought he looked decent last year for a 4th round rookie, who was considered raw coming out, and who was playing for coordinators who didn't seem to know what they were doing. The tools are there, but he has to put it all together. If he can, it would really let them get creative with the versatility of DeJean and CJGJ. Add Sydney Brown to the mix, if he can come back healthy, and they have some crazy athletic pieces to work with going forward, if they can figure things out.
The competition will be interesting.
I think his athleticism will allow him to play in many schemes.
His path is a mean one though on the outside or inside.
I'm absolutely excited for our team.
I think the Eagles see him as a very good free safety but due to his background as a CB the D coordinator can better disguise coverages and do a variety of fun schemes with him. It is my impression from some of the highlights that he tracks a deep ball pretty well. If so with his speed he'll get his share of INTs as a S. I expect him to be a likable and popular Eagle for a long time.
Yeah I think the versatility is a big component. We were pretty thin at safety, and his versatility _beyond_ safety makes him a better pickup that early than someone who was a pure safety. Plus I think Fangio is honestly probably more interested in a player who can help him disguise coverages better. My understanding is that he can maximize that.
Howie has publicly as well as directly to media mentioned they thing he can play outside, inside or safety.
It will be interesting to see how it all works out. Plenty of write ups mentioning his eyes on the QB so yes he should be able to play the ball.
DeJean was the best DB in the draft, though others may be better at particular positions like Kool-aid and Mitchell who would be better outside corners than DeJean
Man, I was hoping Dejean was available in the first. Even better he was in the second. He can play every position in the secondary and punt return very well. We got my two favorite DBs in that draft and we didn’t reach for trotter.
I thought Mitchell would be gone long before we picked so I never even bothered predicting him going to us and was full on for DeJean... well lo and behold.
Eh I think a decent number of people had us taking Dejean at 22 or moving up for Mitchell/Arnold if they fell into the mid-teens. Nobody in hell expected this though.
To piggyback on this a bit, Fangio's shell defense relies on disguising your secondary coverage. He wants to force an offense to take short yards, have his defensive line force the play to stretch outside, and have his linebackers make the tackles. Dejean being able to play multiple roles fits into Fangio's scheme, and I'm expecting mild success from Trotter Jr., he excels at decision-making and attacking forward.
I think DeJean showed he can play all the DB slots in college. From what I heard from draft media is he's also super athletic. He also gives up a boost in the return game so not only can he play any DB spot he can play STs as well.
Kool-Aid I don't know of has any of those qualities. He has his own qualities but he's probably not a fit for us after taking Mitchell.
Man I thought they were kinda talking it up and I was surprised by his confidence that he could take Caitlin Clark on the court (still not sure about it) but he’s seriously athletic and you see it in these clips. The cool thing is BBall requires some heads-up ball awareness that football doesn’t because players aren’t always moving in relation to the ball—they’ve got their man, their zone, whatever, and the ball could be 40yds away. For the roles Cooper will be in on the field, that constant ball awareness mentality, and the opportunism to snag it and make a play, is excellent conditioning.
I honestly think Clark would have no chance unless she continuously splashed deep 3’s in his face, DeJean would easily be the fastest, most athletic player she’s ever played against (compared to other women bball players) and I don’t think she could stop him getting to the hoop lol
Kool aid is a traditional corner, which is what they drafted in Mitchell, DeJean is a Swiss Army knife which they, in particular Fangio, love. Also, DeJean was simply higher on their board, that’s the only reason they traded up to get him in the first place, Kool Aid was never in play.
Probably versatility, koolaid is just a corner while cooper is can play slot and safety as well which apparently could be very useful in fangio scheme
Also dejawn
"jawn" is Philly slang. Can pretty much use it to replace any noun. "How this jawn a bird fan but not know our slang?" (Jokes).
Since he's a Philly Eagle, he's now Cooper DeJawn
What makes kool aid more of a traditional outside CB?
DeJean is bigger and they ran the same 40 time.
DeJean obviously played more positions in college, but athletically the two guys profile almost exactly the same.
dejeans versatility to play all over the defense is more valuable, especially after drafting a pure corner in the first round. you don’t come by pure ball players often like dejean, he’s just always around the ball, if we have any injuries dejean can move all over the defense where needed. also he’s a turnover machine, which the eagles defense lacks desperately especially late in season
Because DeJean can play virtually anywhere in the secondary. DeJean can play Safety, slot CB, and even outside CB. Most people are saying that he’s going to be a Safety in the NFL, but honestly I think he can play really well as a slot CB. Either way, it’s the versatility that’s the big difference between the two.
For some reason people wonder if DeJean can play CB in the NFL and yet he and McKinstry are virtually the same size (DeJean is actually bigger) and ran the same 40 time.
I don't really agree with this, I think he makes far more sense as an outside CB than a slot guy. If your hips aren't good enough to play outside you're definitely not covering guys like Kupp with a two way go.
I think initially he’ll be in some funny hybrid roles that Fangio will use in zone schemes.
I could almost see him playing a weird version of what Malcom used to do at LB on obvious passing situations on 3rd downs. Then eventually he’ll kick out to corner or safety.
He most likely will be all over the place for a few years and for his career as an eagle but it’s looking like our boundary CBs after slay will be Quinyon and Ringo
That’s one of the main things that I’m hoping for. That Maddox actually stays healthy for at least 10 games. That would be amazing. He is a great player and would be ideal playing in the slot. Then Blankenship and DeJean could play Safety. BUT Maddox’s bones seem to be made of glass. Let’s hope none of the glass gets cracked.
Forgive my ignorance, but didn’t they have most of the top DBs in for visits? If they had DeJean and Kool Aid in, they might have just like DeJean better based on intangibles they saw.
NOT SAYING HE WILL BE ANYTHING CLOSE but think about like Hamilton on baltimore he is just extremely versatile and they can be really creative with him - obviously Coop wont be anywhere as elite but the thinking and utilization could be similar in that they are these swiss army guys that can go anywhere in the secondary and even blitzes.
This isnt exactly accurate, teams targeted Arnold significantly more this year due to the fact kool-aid shut down the other side of the fields. Thats why Kool-Aids PBUs and interceptions were low while Arnold had really high numbers in these categories.
He was the best on Bama and wasn’t thrown to so that’s why Arnold made headlines. Kool Aid is the better corner at this moment than Arnold. Arnold was drafted higher due to potential
Don’t think this is accurate. Kool-Aid struggling in the Texas game against those weapons is why his stock fell. He also isn’t great in zone (neither is Arnold)
I agree, and he was better the season prior. However, it’s still true his actual performance this year made him slide. Teams aren’t docking him for a lack of action. He still was a first round pick because of that 2022 year and his good moments from this year.
Kool Aid had a Jones fracture in his foot so he couldn't do the combine. So that could've been a concern. He also has undersized 8.5" hands while dejean has 9 & 3/4". Dejean's vertical is 4 inches better at 38.5 vs 34.5 which is a large difference. Dejean also has experience playing all secondary positions and both sides of special teams. He's simply a better all around athlete: he was a high school qb, wr, and lettered 3x in track/baseball/basketball, and won Iowa state long jump and 100m dash titles. Dejean ran a slightly faster 40 at 4.42 vs 4.47 vs Kool Aid. Terrion Arnold, who is almost 15lbs lighter, performed the 10yd in 1.54sec and Dejean did it in 1.52sec. (Kool Aid didn't do it for whatever reason). Dejean is just an elite freak of nature and I'm glad he's on our team.
I liked Kool aid a ton….probably over Cooper…however because we drafted Mitchell who I think is better than both…obviously so did the eagles….Cooper Complements the team better…Kool-aid is an outside guy Coop could be outside could be slot could be safety…just put him on the field. Should be fun.
Dejean is an absolute athlete. Kool aid is a set position traditional corner, which Michell is far better at. DeJean can play any slot, could probably succeed at a safety or zone position too. Dudes a beast with some pretty impressive punt returns too
Think of DeJean as a new Malcom Jenkins. I’m not saying he will be as good as Jenkins, but in theory they can play the same style. Deep, los, blitz, outside corner, slot.
Same reason they drafted dejean over max melton and mike sainrstrill. Or the bears drafted Caleb Williams over any other QB. The consensus grade on dejean was just higher. Doesn’t mean it will end up being correct, but as of this weekend he was viewed higher.
I hope it signals that they believe one of the current CB’s can start opposite Mitchell after slay leaves, maybe Ringo? It’s also fair to ask why DeJean over Edgerrin cooper. As with all picks, it’ll be compared to those around them for years
He’s a better prospect by most measures.
He’s bigger but just as fast. He was his team’s top corner while Kool Aid was the #2. Much better tackler.
And as many others have mentioned, there’s versatility. Kool Aid was strictly an outside CB while DeJean played S and CB as well as being a return man.
DeJean’s probably going to be primarily a safety who we can move around the field at times. Kool Aid is primarily an outside corner and we had already gotten Q Mitchell.
I think it came down to scheme and versatility. Kool aid is move of a press man guy which isnt really a fangio trait. Dejean can play all db positions, my guess is he get immediate time in the nickel and then potentially move outside. I think he fits best in that minkah fitzpatrick role but not sure I would move reed or cjgj. I think with the talent we have now in the secondary we may run a bit more dime packages
One is a safety who can play nickle and outside corner in a pinch and the other is a guy who isn’t that versatile and is probably a little bit overrated because he played at Bama.
best available player - cooper was mocked as the best cb in some mock ups (ive heard anyway), can play anywhere in the backfield, didn't give up a single TD last year in coverage, doesn't have the diva personality, can do punt returns and is just solid.
I'm also biased as hes originally from the same small city I am :D
I think this would be a better question if the two CBs taken after Dejean weren’t named for a children’s drink and the blue guy from Final Fantasy X.
But the answer is that Dejean is believed to be a better overall player than the guys who he was drafted ahead of fell in the draft with one of his big things being his positional ~~diversity~~ versatility.
Like I said, underrated value. We got killed in the middle of the field last year because we didn’t have athletes who could compete with actual NFL receivers, DeJean changes that.
Positional versatility

Yeah we will see how it goes. Blitzing Dejean should be a rare event because of his coverage skills. Our ILBs on the other hand... might as well blitz them every play lol
He also has great blitzing skills and is really good at wrapping up in the open field on run blitzes.
A lot of Ringo hype. I hope it pans out but I don't see a path to being a starter this year. I don't think the Eagles have a plan yet though so how can any of us know

Agreed. I think the hope is a Malcolm Jenkins type player.
Kinda like what Baltimore did with Hamilton?
I would say where he fell in the draft reflects most of the league viewed him as similar. This isn’t a criticism just that, that’s what he is.
Howie has publicly as well as directly to media mentioned they thing he can play outside, inside or safety. It will be interesting to see how it all works out. Plenty of write ups mentioning his eyes on the QB so yes he should be able to play the ball.

What makes kool aid more of a traditional outside CB? DeJean is bigger and they ran the same 40 time. DeJean obviously played more positions in college, but athletically the two guys profile almost exactly the same.
Experience, probably. You said it yourself, DeJean played everywhere.
Kool-Aid had more press-man snaps, Dejean more of a read and react zone corner
Probably not by much. Saban played more zone this year than he almost ever had.
I don't have PFF so I can't verify but that's almost universal in the scouting reports. We'll be a mostly zone team anyway.
Well if we do primarily play zone maybe even Bradberry could have a bounce back, assuming he’s still even here

dejeans versatility to play all over the defense is more valuable, especially after drafting a pure corner in the first round. you don’t come by pure ball players often like dejean, he’s just always around the ball, if we have any injuries dejean can move all over the defense where needed. also he’s a turnover machine, which the eagles defense lacks desperately especially late in season

That’s not all you need to be an outside cb. You need good hips and agility and DeJawn don’t have good enough hips to be an outside cb
I don't really agree with this, I think he makes far more sense as an outside CB than a slot guy. If your hips aren't good enough to play outside you're definitely not covering guys like Kupp with a two way go.
Yeah sure, his hips are good enough for a slot but not outside. Also he’s too good of a tackler to waste it outside
I think initially he’ll be in some funny hybrid roles that Fangio will use in zone schemes. I could almost see him playing a weird version of what Malcom used to do at LB on obvious passing situations on 3rd downs. Then eventually he’ll kick out to corner or safety.

Yep. Honestly, I think he would be great as a slot CB, but we have Maddox there so DeJean as safety should be perfect. Or he could switch idk.
Love Maddox's talent and attitude, but it'll be nice to have an option when he goes down week 2.
Maddox starting the season on IR is a virtual lock
I’m just hoping there’s not going to be any cracks in the glass that are his bones.
Because Dejean was higher on the Eagles’ draft board than Kool Aid. That’s the answer. For any more of an explanation you’ll have to ask Howie.
Ask Howie is the right answer to 90% of this sub.
Yeah but he won’t text back so here we are.
Did you refer to him as his formal title Big Pimpin?
Oh shit that was my mistake.
Cuz they think he’s a better player/fit
Kool-Aid also was incredibly inconsistent despite being on a top team. He was the second best CB on his team and got picked on.
Kool aid was clearly cb1 the season prior. Got less balls his way and Arnold capitalized.
I agree, and he was better the season prior. However, it’s still true his actual performance this year made him slide. Teams aren’t docking him for a lack of action. He still was a first round pick because of that 2022 year and his good moments from this year.
but Kool aid wasn't a 1st round pick that also likely had more to do with the run of offensive players than his skill set though.
First round grade*
They struggle in zone cause Bama is a man team
Ok. Doesn’t detract from anything I said
Yeah I never said I disagree but I was just giving context to why they are bad in zonr
Eagles are a bigger fan of mustard flavors and Kool-Aid.
So in an imaginary scenario where **TERRION ARNOLD** happened to also fall to 40 with DeJean, do you still think they would have taken DeJean?
No arnold...hes a better version of dejean
Ability to play safety etc
Sneaky athletic
Same reason they drafted dejean over max melton and mike sainrstrill. Or the bears drafted Caleb Williams over any other QB. The consensus grade on dejean was just higher. Doesn’t mean it will end up being correct, but as of this weekend he was viewed higher.
Sounds like Dejean excels best in a zone scheme he's probably the better one for Fangio's defense
One has a broke foot and the other don't... we don't need a syd jones situation
They are going to try to make Dejean a hybrid CB/S which is where one of the safety positions is trending.
I hope it signals that they believe one of the current CB’s can start opposite Mitchell after slay leaves, maybe Ringo? It’s also fair to ask why DeJean over Edgerrin cooper. As with all picks, it’ll be compared to those around them for years
Cooper will tackle a mofo hard as hell; he’s not just a db, he’s a football player.
Hahahahahaha That's good bro
He’s a better prospect by most measures. He’s bigger but just as fast. He was his team’s top corner while Kool Aid was the #2. Much better tackler. And as many others have mentioned, there’s versatility. Kool Aid was strictly an outside CB while DeJean played S and CB as well as being a return man.
Slay, Rodgers, and Mitchell are strictly outside corners. Kool aid would never see the field. At least dejean will get some run at nickel and safety.
DeJean’s probably going to be primarily a safety who we can move around the field at times. Kool Aid is primarily an outside corner and we had already gotten Q Mitchell.
For the diversity
**Dejawn Fixed that for you
We have a lot of pure young corners, we needed some young safetys
Because he’s better.
We don’t know if either are going to be good but they are highly touted prospects…just wait and see
versatility. Helps on defense and Special Teams
Already drafted an outside corner with Q...made sense to go slot/S/db hybrid with dejean
Because 1. They had Dejean higher on their board and 2. Dejean has immense value as a versatile piece that can play all over the defense.
I think the reasoning behind it is that they are looking for Dejean to replace Maddox after this season and he can also play Safety.
He's a weapon. Not just defined to one position. Personality and leadership as well.
Mike Sainristil is better than both of them
Cooper can actually tackle, plays multiple positions.
Watch his Iowa highlights and remember Iowa never has an offense just a punter and defense
I went to Iowa, I’m an Iowa fan lol
My condolences on your nepo baby offense
I think this would be a better question if the two CBs taken after Dejean weren’t named for a children’s drink and the blue guy from Final Fantasy X. But the answer is that Dejean is believed to be a better overall player than the guys who he was drafted ahead of fell in the draft with one of his big things being his positional ~~diversity~~ versatility.
An elite nickel (DeJean) is one of the most underrated value positions imo. Kool-Aid would get overshadowed by Mitchell/Slay/Ringo at the position
I mean, DeJean wasn’t a nickel CB in college and I doubt the Eagles take him where they did if they thought was his upside.
Like I said, underrated value. We got killed in the middle of the field last year because we didn’t have athletes who could compete with actual NFL receivers, DeJean changes that.
Kool aid is just NOT a good football name. And the diversity and overall higher grade for Cooper.
The people only saying positional versatility are just giving me reagor flashbacks "b...b..b.but reagor is a deep threat that we need"
Thank you
Beacuse howie likes trying to prove hes the smartest guy in the room.
