I like his running style. Doesn’t mess around trying to hit the home run, and takes what’s there. He’ll get the tough yards

DaGh0stt

That being said, he’s shifty enough to make something out of nothing when need be

joegtech

"tough yards?" At 205lbs and with nothing in the film I've seen suggesting he has adequate lower body strength I don't see him as anything more than a 2nd half change of pace runner this year. It seems he's likely to be run over by blitzing LBs limiting his usefulness on 3rd down. I don't have a problem with the pick. I expect him to need a year or two to mature physically before he can really contribute. If Gainwell is lost in FA, Shipley might be ready to fill that role.

AgentProdigy17

Ain't heard Wendell's name in minute

andrewapicture

Fr Wendell out here catching strays 😂 man came for him like euphoria

smmoke_

Nobody talking about will shipley like how u think they are bru

PiousDemon

People nowadays see 1 comment and will post with the headline that everyone is saying this bullshit. It's media click bait syndrome

NotFeelingShame

every post about shipley i see multiple haters

smmoke_

What posts about shipley lmfao u looking up will shipley posts or something

Irie_I_the_Jedi

The ringer philly special guys sheil and solak pretty much ripped him as a JAG. I can't remember why exactly, I think that they watched tape and thought he was bad. Slow, bad pass blocking, no home run ability, ok stats, etc. they both did not like the pick and thought there were better backs available. I'm excited for him, I've heard some mixed things though. Gotta watch some highlights. We don't need him to be a 3 down back, just a good spell for saquon.

Otherwise_Tip_3614

Solak who liked JJAW and Reagor picks plus wanted to trade the store for Zach Wilson. He's no better at prognosticating success than anybody else.

Fenris_Maule

So just don't pick who this guy likes basically.

Night0wl11

I think it had to do with Shipley having the same YPC as the other RBs in the offense and there may have been mention of potential fumbling problems (he had 10 while at Clemson). It was either on the Ringer or PHLY where they mentioned he was very much middle of the pack in terms of yards after contact and stats like that (was sitting in the 200s for the YAC category)

Otherwise_Tip_3614

I think Shipley has a bigger sample size than most other RBs, thus more opportunities for fumbles, so there's that.

Night0wl11

He does in terms of totality, but on a year to year basis, it's not exactly good, either. Only 16 RBs had more fumbles when he was 49th in terms of plays from scrimmage in 2023. He was tied for 4th in fumbles as 23th in plays from scrimmage in 2022, and tied for 12th in fumbles and was 92nd in plays from scrimmage in 2021. For full transparency, he was often tied with about \~10 guys with these stats and I couldn't see who he'd be tied with in 2023 (as almost no stat database seems to have them except [this one](https://www.teamrankings.com/college-football/player-stat/fumbles?season_id=119) and even that is limited), but it's notable, even when considering the sample size.

IPCONFOG

The eagles really hate bad pass blocking RB's. If he doesn't passblock that will hurt his playing time.

KnightofAshley

He will have a year to learn and hopefully improve, Barkley and Gainwell will be the main 2 guys this year. He will have a shot when Gainwell's contract is up.

NotFeelingShame

The post of Shipley's highlights from a day ago was filled with haters

MushroomExpensive366

So does he fumble too much?

Dankofamericaaa2

Prob cuz he’s a white rb lol

ThomYorkesFingers

I wouldn't say I'm a hater but I had no clue who this guy was since I don't watch college ball. I wasn't expecting much from him but you've peaked my interest. He strikes me as a Chris Polk type running back, he probably won't light it up as a starter, but as long as he runs angry and fights for yards, I'll take it.

NotFeelingShame

I don't think any of the RB's from this draft will "light it up." I'm sure there will be 1 or 2 that surpass expectations and that will be HEAVILY dependent on coaching, game planning to their strengths, and playing time opportunities. Obviously the idea for the next couple of years is that Saquon will get most of the carries, and if he misses time Shipley and whoever else is on the team will split carries. Shipley wouldn't be asked to carry the ball 20 times a game, unless he breaks out. Personally i hated Kenny G so much last year that I am excited at the thought of a new backup RB, but i also hated the entire coaching staff last year so maybe I should reserve my Kenny G hate until next offseason.

DigitalHemlock

Genuine question; what do your think about the argument that Shipley's yards per carry where the exact same as all other backs in that offense, potentially meaning he wasn't outperforming them? If he's talented shouldn't he have done better then them in a similar offense? Bo Wulf of PHLY has be pointing this out. Curious if you think that's fair or if Shipley's carries aren't equivalent to the others carries.

NotFeelingShame

I think part of my post could be partly biased towards 2022 (his best overall season) and not 2023 where he mostly shared carries with Phil Mafah (I won't respect including any other RB's ypc averages since nobody else got significant carries). I kind of forgot how much Mafah came on last year, i think the ypc differences says more about Mafah than it does about Shipley. For 2023 sure it's fair that Mafah had a slightly higher YPC, but you shouldn't discount that Shipley's 2022 YPC was higher than Mafah's 2023 YPC, or the fact that YPC fluctuates each year for any RB. Look at saquon's YPC or derrick Henry.

Con-D-Oriano1

I watched a fair amount of Clemson football last season. The best player on offense was Will Shipley. The second-best player was Phil Mafah. That man’s a beast.

Irie_I_the_Jedi

The ringer guys ripped the pick too. I was genuinely confused because I thought I heard good things about the guy before the draft. We'll see. Hoping for the best.

DigitalHemlock

PHLY didn't go as far as to "rip" the pick. Bo said it was a decent value and not bad - just wouldn't have been his preference and cited the YPC comparison. Can't recall what Zach!Zach!Zach! said.

[deleted]

I hear you. I think Shipley is gonna be good, I like that he doesn't really have anything he's bad at. Except maybe ball control lol. IMO he's hopefully a suped up gainwell that can run routes.

Hungry-Space-1829

I’m hoping Moore can use him and Anias Smith creatively. If you just make Shipley a relief runner for Saquon on the same plays he’ll be a solid B and that’ll be alright, but I think there’s potential to unlock him more creatively in different sets. Really think the guy can do a lot, especially in the receiving game. I agree that he stood out in every Clemson game I watched, but lots of college backs do so hard to feel like an expert there for me

Steppyjim

Yall I dunno how we can spend top dollar on Saquon, draft a RB with a mid pick, and people are like oh he’s the future. He’s a CoP body and unless he proves otherwise this is Barkleys team. Like I hope the kid becomes a super star, but the eagles aren’t banking on it. They’re banking on Ship pushing Gainwell for his spot and being useful in a rotation to spell Saquon People are overreacting crazy lately

NotFeelingShame

I think people are just excited for a new guy to take gainwell's spot

KnightofAshley

Yeah I see him as a guy that will fill Gainwell's spot when his contract is up and maybe when Barkley's is up also if he shows something.

Grand_Extension5345

I don’t hate shipley, I just think there were better running-backs available to make the RB room a little more dynamic. I think Shipley is exactly the kind of guy they like drafting. And he is probably gonna be an upgrade to Kenny G. But i would have preferred Ray Davis, Audric Estime, Isaac Guerendo or Braelon Allen. I just think those guys give your RB room a better change of pace to what we have now. Will Shipley will hopefully be a More dependable and higher quality Kenny Gainwell, essentially what we wished we got out of the Kenny G without the high leverage fumbles and bad decisions. But i still think there were better options. That being said i hope he is successful here and proves everyone wrong. Seems like he has a solid head on his shoulders and wants to learn as much as possible/work hard. He is gonna need to really work on his pass blocking, keep turnovers down, and be a YAC king to justify taking him over a big workhorse Mauler style Backs like Allen or Estime.

Low_Hyena7259

Shipley feels like the high floor, low ceiling guy compared to a lot of backs who had exciting specific traits but notably lacking in other areas. I’m fully down with that when you think we’ve sunk big resources into RB1 and this guy likely isn’t getting the volume to develop into a starter - I see him being a long term RB2 around the league while some of the other interesting pick ups could well develop into RB1s but equally could totally bust.

mseeke

Who are you talking to exactly? Is this slander even a thing?

NotFeelingShame

the haters from the will shipley highlight post in this subreddit by some guy from a day ago or so, and some other post from when he was drafted

mseeke

lol aight. I just read that and thought, “who is this for?”

vdez25

Ben Solack. The Ringer

delphil1966

well thats great to hear / yes all i was hearing was hes just a guy - this is good news - thanks !

GRAYNOTE_

Cool I believe you

Turdnugget0321

Shipley is a Jack of all trades but a master of none. Can do everything well but doesn’t have any top end traits. He should be a solid backup that you can trust to do the right thing and make the right reads/plays. Good locker room guy too.

Chooob210

Most running backs are JAGs imo. Grabbing one in the fourth round doesn’t bug me but he is just a guy.

King_Wentz

Yeah he looks like a very solid backup RB. Prob not RB1 upside but does exactly what you want from a backup. All around back, smart, tough, gets the yards that are there and can make people miss. Mostly doesn’t show the 4.39 speed on tape, if he did it’d be a lot different

EManSantaFe

Agree 100%. I was not one of the Wallace guys.

justdaman182

Is this satire?

Good_Ole_Skid

Try not to sensationalize your titles. Opinions from the media aren’t going to play a role during his career. That is not slander. You’re right, bad offense. If the wear and tear of being Clemson’s bell cow, he has the speed and skill to thrive in Philly’s offense. He’s a proven speedster who’s shifty and has big play capabilities. His 4.38 at his pro day wasn’t nothing with a 1.55 split 10. He’s shifty and a burner. He can catch and doesn’t have a history of fumbles. If he can pick up the playbook and be at the very best *above average* in pass protection he will be the RB2 we very much need. Kenny G is a serviceable RB3 whose play is never consistent. I was hoping we would have looked into J.K. Dobbins but I think Shipley will fit this offense better.

Night0wl11

I would say his fumbling wasn't a glaring issue, but it's still something that we should be slightly wary of (always had at least 3 fumbles a season). I agree with most everything else you've said though.

biggulpshuh_alright

Is the slander in the room with us right now?

captainyami21

this happens every year, some people will just never be happy with our draft. howie literally had a top 3 draft in the league. these guys haven’t even touched the field yet as eagles. after round 3-4 it’s pretty much a guessing game let’s be honest. also this is the internet so people love to argue until they’re blue in the face. also, eagles fans are never happy, we just had an amazing off season resigned key players for years to come, and here people are complaining about a late round running back pick. stfu and enjoy the ride.

creativename87639

I don’t think calling a rb drafted in the 4th round average is really slander and that’s what most people are saying about him. The dude who posted that now removed highlight reel was praising the dude like he was the next coming of Christ and was comparing him to CMC

Birds_of_Paradise420

nah I like him. he's a solid backup RB. we didn't need to get an all pro to spell Saquon for 5-10 touches a game

kateuptonsvibrator

I'm not a Clemson fan, but live in Greenville and by proxy watch and discuss Clemson football with several friends who live and breathe it. Shipley is a solid pick and an upgrade. He's really, really versatile and an instant upgrade. I think Shipley believers just have to wait, let his play speak for itself and say I told you so. He'll bring people around.

PlumCrazyAvenue

Thank you for speaking up, Mrs. Shipley. I am happy with the pick

Halfman97

Yeah it was odd seeing people on this sub and some of the Eagles fan sites hate on this pick. Will was one of the few reasons why Clemson even had an offense the last 2 seasons.

miningmonster

Eagles insider Johnny Mac is positive that Shipley was a vaunted Howie "red star". He said when he interviewed Shipley after the draft, it was the most impressive interview he's EVER seen by anyone coming out of the draft. & John's been doing it doing it for a long time. That was enough for me to know that this kid not only has the physical tools (patient, and have you seen his burst through holes once he finds a hole??) but his mindset is dam impressive. And he is so competitive he had to get a 4.0GPA. His intangibles are what I think he was drafted for combined with decent athleticism.

Yiggity_Yins

We needed a guy like Shipley to pair with Saquon. Shipley will be productive and, after the first inevitable Saquon injury, could morph into more of a 1A, 1B situation.

johnnybananas123

I dont like fletcher cox’s son catching a stray here for no reason, please apologize

PleaseBearwithme

I get what you’re saying but if someone just looks at this past year they’ll see Mafah was the better back. I’m just hoping one of the drafted Tigers pans out this time around

IPCONFOG

Wallace's tape didn't even look good. Gainwell is way better than Smallwood. Just look at his playoff numbers alone.

SumKM

We haven’t had RB’s who were competent receivers and in blitz pickup, and it killed us vs the blitz last season. Saquon and Shipley are huge in that regard. Both solid in both areas.

KnightofAshley

I don't think he will play much if everyone is healthy this year but Gainwell is on his last year and I'm sure Shipley will take his spot and maybe when Barkley is up he will still be here to start.

Educational_Mind_370

mike tannenbaum recently shouted him out on espn's "get up" saying how dalles rb's are BELOW Shipley and that he was an unbelievable steal. I don't really watch enough espn but from what I do this guy isn't the easiest to impress

[deleted]

You seem like more of a Will Shipley fan than an Eagles fan. Sorry not everyone loves your good god fearing man crush bro lol.

NotFeelingShame

Couldn't be more wrong. I am an eagles fan and I am excited at Shipley's chances to take Gainwell's job. An underrated part of the AJ brown trade was that Jalen Reagor was off the team. Addition by subtraction. I don't think gainwell is nearly as bad as reagor but it will be addition by subtraction when he is gone

[deleted]

You don't have to hate on Gainwell or Smallwood to praise Shipley. Those two played hard every snap here and never complained once about anything.

Otherwise_Tip_3614

My fear is Shipley shows some good stuff that makes people think we got a steal, then gets a rep for being fumble prone and the fans JJAW him quick. Protect that rock like the one ring, hobbit bro.

raugust7

All i can say is Kellen Moore better not fuck this up with all this talent on O. Glad we got some competition against Kenny too. I feel like hes only good in the 2min drill lol

Hip_Hop_Hippos

Dude… what’s he actually good at? He’s decent at everything. That’s fine. But like, don’t expect us to get excited about him. He’s fine to eat some touches or whatever, but that’s about it.

NotFeelingShame

He's good at....running? keeping balance when getting hit? It depends what gets you excited. I for one am excited at the prospects of having someone take away Kenny G's touches. But yea, he's not going to be a star. Stars don't get drafted in the 4th round except for 1 or 2 every few years. I think his ceiling is a better version of Miles Sanders (more catching and broken tackles), which is not very exciting but its more than worth a 4th round pick

Hip_Hop_Hippos

>He's good at....running? keeping balance when getting hit? Is he? Compared to other backs who typically get drafted? >It depends what gets you excited. I for one am excited at the prospects of having someone take away Kenny G's touches. Is “he might be better than Kenny Gainwell” really that much of a compliment?

NotFeelingShame

I don't understand what you expect from a backup running back, yes a new back up being better than the old back up is a compliment. Hes not going to be better than Saquon was in his prime if thats what you want. Compared to other running backs that get drafted, depends on your opinion of "good." To me, none of the running backs this year were really great including the top guys drafted. So yea I would say he is good at running compared to other backs who got drafted

Hip_Hop_Hippos

>I don't understand what you expect from a backup running back Upside? Like where is it? Cuz I can list a veritable cornucopia of incredibly productive backs taken 4th, or later, or not taken… I just don’t see anything that leads me there. Hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think I am.

NotFeelingShame

just name a few of those incredibly prodcutive backs and give me an opportunity to make an argument

Hip_Hop_Hippos

Kareem Hunt, Chris Carson, Austin Ekeler, Aaron Jones, Raheem Mostert, Isaiah Pacheco, Kyren Williams.

NotFeelingShame

If I had to guess, none of these guys are drafted in the same draft. How many RBs were drafted this year, 15? 20? cool if one of them pans out to be aaron jones or austin ekeler (the only actual stars on this list) then i guess we should have drafted every single rb in the draft

Hip_Hop_Hippos

>If I had to guess, none of these guys are drafted in the same draft. Dude... Carson, Hunt, Ekeler and Jones were literally all in the same draft class. That draft class also had Kamara in the 3rd, and Mixon in the 2nd. Just stop.

Shinigami4th

We could name WRs taken in the 4th or later too that have become successful and that is a much more sought after position. He has the potential to be aa above average RB to give Saquon some relief and keep him fresh and has versatility. Not all runningbacks are good at catching the ball out of the backfield and its hard to find backs who are decent at everything. If he can do everything decent, id argue that is a much higher upside than you are selling it for. Even then a better back-up than Gainwell is a big upside, whether you think it is or not.

Hip_Hop_Hippos

>We could name WRs taken in the 4th or later too that have become successful and that is a much more sought after position. I agree. We could find a lot of interesting guys drafted in the 4th or later. Will Shipley isn’t one of them. Disagree? Make. Your. Case. You’ve danced around it like a little bitch for several comments now. Make your case. Why is he good relative to other NFL RBs?

Shinigami4th

First off, im not the same guy making "several comments" Learn who you are responding to. Second off you conceded he is a back who is "decent at everything" which in my argument makes him a very intriguing prospect and an upside player who has more potential than a kenny gainwell. Stop with your ad hominem. Edit: i also made my case in my last post. Which boiled down to. There arent alot of backs who can be "decent at everything". That is a huge plus

Hip_Hop_Hippos

Well… That’s one way to avoid answering how this dude is remotely interesting.

Shinigami4th

If you cannot wrap your head around someone who can provide an ability to do everything as an answer as to why they can be good then you are just obtuse Way to walk away with your tail between your legs and not even apologize for your other comment

MikeTysonChicken

Hey OP, you know people are allowed to have differing opinions on players right?

NotFeelingShame

Hey commenter, I used the opinion flair. This post is my opinion on why some of these other opinions are wrong. I believe that is called a debate? no? Or would you be happier if my opinion was removed and you got to read only what you wanted to read on the internet?

MikeTysonChicken

It's not "slander" if you disagree with peoples opinion counter to your own. Slander implies bad faith arguments.

NotFeelingShame

Ok I guess i should have titled it "Will Shipley haters"

woahitsshant

he’s the backup equivalent to Kenny Picket, a safe player. he doesn’t have a defining trait, but is around average at everything. he’ll take what’s there and will play well within his designated role.

NotFeelingShame

Is kenny pickett a safe player? lol. I think Shipley does have a defining trait, which would be his toughness. I rarely ever saw Miles sanders or Kenny gainwell break a tackle, Shipley will keep going after you think he should be down.

shrek_cena

I like Shipley he was good when my Vols asserted their orange dominance in the Orange Bowl 💪🏼😎🍊

SKOLBEAR

It's mostly that Clemson is filled with Dabo apologists and nobody really believes in that cult anymore outside of that campus. He'a a 4th round running back. None of us will be shocked if he's out of the league in 3 years. You think he's better than that, cool. But this is planet earth where tangible things matter and not if you pray hard enough and eat your veggies, your football team will win.

NotFeelingShame

I thought clemson was terrible so don't count me in with those guys, shipley i thought was a bright spot

Hthnstrength

Don’t you know? All those haters did hours and hours of scouting and have worked in nfl front offices with an eye for talent.

Thundermuscle03

KVon was horrible at Clemson? He was a solid safety on a defense that despite all the linemen gave up a lot of blown coverages. Saved us in A&M game and NC State. Both we lose and no championship. Shipley was overrated trash most of Clemson career in comparison, especially with expectations coming in. I am actually a Clemson fan, and hope he does well here, but don’t shit on someone who showed last year her can be a decent nfl safety in right defense while hyping a dude who was a sideline cheerleader most the damn time

NotFeelingShame

he basically blew the A&M game, then if i remember correctly his interception on the 2 point conversion was caused by pressure and forced a bad throw

NotFeelingShame

Hold on what, decent NFL safety? he was horrible last year wdym

Ashamed_Job_8151

I’d bet good money he’s league average type guy. He was about same as everyone else on his team and if you watch highlights it’s all just him not getting touched.   Hes a good who did ok in the acc. I think if he can give the eagles what Smallwood gave them that would be great. Don’t over value a guy because you liked him college.

Oneillier

Love this take
