I always wondered if they couldn't increase R&D or even use some of their cash to acquire companies, or just repay debt. Apple's FCF seems absurdly high. It's impressive on the one hand but feels a little like the roman empire. Pompous, great, successful, until it wasn't.

I was chatting about this in another thread and someone mentioned these buybacks often go to offer employees vesting stock to help retain the best talent. Funny enough, I recently interviewed at Apple and they were offering about 4x the stock value of the same positions I was seeing elsewhere in the tech sector. Sure enough, they quickly became my first choice of employers. Honestly, if you're sitting on a massive pile of money with a company that's already doing everything right, then stock buybacks are an excellent use of those funds.

They could have easily bought out paramount with that kind of cash, sony and apollo offered $26 billion for paramount. It would have been a good way to pad out apple tv's content library.

Would have been a waste of money

Yeah, the last few decades of every corporation doing that same thing was also a sign that something has always been coming!
