> I'm reading that the newest AVID update supports Big Sur and the M1 chip Big Sur works, M1 chip doesn't. This knowledge base article has details, and will be updated when the situation changes: https://avid.secure.force.com/pkb/articles/en\_US/Compatibility/macOS-Big-Sur-Support

el_Topo42

Yeah it’s not happening. We have several M1s and I’ve been messing with MC trying several versions to load up and work. Def not worth your time at this moment. They may have some semi-secret beta at some point but again, don’t bother.

Nuggetface

There was a guy yesterday who couldn’t get it to work with the M1 chip. https://reddit.com/r/editors/comments/oqen2c/avid_on_big_sur/

the_produceanator

AVID MC doesn’t officially support the M1. If MC is your bread and butter, I’d stay away from the M1. If you can move to premiere or the other NLEs, I’d say the M1 will be a great choice.

fkick

Avid most likely will not support M1 before Q4 2021 or Q1 2022. Current test versions of avid still do not support the M1 chipset. If you are comfortable with literally any other NLE (Premiere, FCP, Resolve), M1 is the way to go. But for Avid, stick with Intel or go PC.

sudonem

Search the sub. The M1 is not quite ready for prime time if you’re working in anything other than FCPX.

Bmart008

They just made the new Premiere M1 native, and it's running something like 170% faster now than the x86 emulated one, and it was as fast in emulation as my old Alienware 10 pound monster was. It's pretty impressive. Davinci works pretty well on it too, but the plugins aren't all updated yet. Seems like avid is just slow, but that is what Avid is good at...

dmizz

My gf just got an M1 laptop and I fired up premiere / media encoder. Impressive for what is essentially a mobile CPU but definitely not suitable for a professional edit station. Also Avid is super stable idk what you're talking about.

Bmart008

Not talking about stability, Avid is just famously slow to update or change their program. Every other major NLE has native Arm support at this point for instance. Within the next year all new Macs will be ARM based, so they better hurry up, or people will be switching to other NLEs on Macs. As for the M1 not being suitable for a professional edit station, I don't know, it depends on what you're working on, I usually edit on my pc, 5900x - 3080, but the show I'm working on now is a 1080p kids show, the M1 could easily handle that. If you're working with 8k raw files, in davinci with Metal you can edit at a max of 55fps, which is pretty amazing. My PC does 120 fps 8k raw on the same test. And with proxies you could do anything in my opinion.

Ghost2Eleven

Why is the M1 chip not suitable for pro editing in Premiere? I've been editing in Premiere for years and I'm sure it's faster than the old Intel chip I'm editing on right now.

WhatTheFDR

16GB ram limit kinda kills pro workstations

Ghost2Eleven

Oh, didn't realize there was a 16GB limit. Yeah, as a guy who edits features and TV... I rarely have a use for editing on a laptop. The only time I ever edit on a laptop is when I'm stuck away from the edit bay and I have to have a mobil setup for quick fixes to cuts I have to send out. I'm still cutting on a trashcan from 2013 and have zero issues doing my work.

WhatTheFDR

Yeah the rumor is M2 will have more support for pros but no one really know until Apple lays everything out. Feels very similar to the PowerPC>Intel days. I'm looking for something to replace an imac Pro as a DIT & color workstation and Windows is looking more appealing every day. Just wish Resolve could output Prores on Windows

Here is qualified Apple Mac Systems for Media Composer 2021.5 [https://avid.secure.force.com/pkb/servlet/fileField?retURL=%2Fpkb%2Farticles%2Fen\_US%2Fcompatibility%2Fen422411&entityId=ka16e000000hkqtAAA&field=Attachment\_1\_\_Body\_\_s](https://avid.secure.force.com/pkb/servlet/fileField?retURL=%2Fpkb%2Farticles%2Fen_US%2Fcompatibility%2Fen422411&entityId=ka16e000000hkqtAAA&field=Attachment_1__Body__s)

soundman1024

I'd look at an older refurb or even a used sysetm to save some cash and hold you over until Avid supports M series chips. By then they'll probably be available with more than 16GB of memory.

MegaMegaSuper

Avid is worth the wait. Best professional equipment out there. Just don't be fooled by their terrible marketing, pricing, timing or spokespeople. ;-) I am also an editor looking to fan out. Will wait to see what the 16 inch MBP with M chip will look like and what the pricing is. Good luck to you!

MizTall

I couldn’t agree more. Yeah. Based on replies I’m thinking I’ll rent a rig for this show then see where avid and Mac are at after that.

dmizz

The M1 is a great chip for the average user but it’s not meant for heavy workloads. Get an iMac with an i7 or i9. A windows machine will be the best bang for your buck if you’re willing to switch.

youmustthinkhighly

My M1 Macbook Pro is surpassingly fast, the speed is not the issue, I get benchmarks as fast as an i9 everyday.. Only the XEONS in iMac Pro and the new Cheesegrader MacPro are faster, and that is in MultiCore benchmarks. AVID is the problem they don't do cutting edge updates, they are slow and steady...

persona1138

I really think this perspective is incorrect. For several reasons… The M1 chip is MORE than capable of most workflows; Premiere Pro itself has been found to perform more than 80% faster on M1 chips since it’s native compatibility came around. Also, this fall (rumors suggest sometime between September-November), Apple is heavily rumored to release new 14 and 16 inch MacBook Pros with an even more powerful M1X chip and up to 64 GB’s of RAM. Thirdly, word is that Avid Media Composer support on M1 via Rosetta is coming this year, with native M1 support in 2022. Not ideal, but a little patience will pay off. And lastly - and more importantly - I would NEVER buy a new Apple computer that wasn’t an M1 chip at this stage. Having lived through the PowerPC-to-Intel transition days, I think buying an Intel Mac right now is a poor investment. If someone absolutely MUST buy a new computer - their existing one is dead/dying/whatever - and they absolutely MUST stick with a Mac, then I guess sure… bite the bullet and spend a couple grand or more on an Intel Mac that won’t last you long. Or, as you said, make the total switch over to Windows. Me? I suggest patience. Wait for the new MBP’s coming later this year along with Rosetta support. Performance gains on the Apple Silicon chips seem to be pretty astounding, and we’ll have native M1 Avid compatibility next year.

HoPMiX

No way. I picked up a m1 and it couldn’t handle more than a couple tracks of video on short edits. You try and throw long form at you better love spinning beach balls. I was working on resolve and in 4K pro res. It’s not ready yet. By the time the developers get up to speed the m1x or m2 will be hitting the market.

fishbowlbob97

In MC, Premiere, or other?

HoPMiX

Resolve 17. Premiere wasn’t silicon approved yet. I returned the m1 and will wait for the newer pro models to drop in September.

fishbowlbob97

Is it confirmed they're coming out that soon? I was thinking of getting one of the M1 MacBooks for film school this fall but if they're coming up that soon I may hold off...

HoPMiX

Not confirmed. Just the mark Gurman rumors but with the frequency of the rumors now hitting and news that there will be no iMac Pro in 2021, I’d wager the MacBook Pro 16 m1x will be released in 4Q

fishbowlbob97

Ah. Well that makes my decision much harder, ignorance is bliss I guess
