I’ve never seen a chase nipple threaded on the inside. Rigid couplings are smooth on the outside and threaded on the inside. Maybe that’s what you’re referring to but probably not.
You mean like this https://www.reddit.com/r/electricians/comments/k6pckx/what_is_this_called_its_a_chase_nipple_but/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1 that’s a damn reducer dude
Coming from an HVAC background I will tell you that a plumbing bushing is threaded inside and out to join 2 different size pipe. But every electrical bushing is smooth on the inside due to the fact that an electrical bushing is a bushing for the wires to avoid chafing through the insulation.
Thats interesting, I've always called these chase nipples too, and hadn't heard of chase bushings. It was literally just yesterday, I found what you described - threaded inside and out at the shop. It was me with 10 years of experience and 2 other guys with 20+ years each. None of us knew what the heck it was. I think that those are called chase/hex bushings, but I can't find one online for the exact one I had, and they're kinda hard to find.
Lmao, I got sent down from a roof on Monday for a 3/4” one like in the picture, foreman said he’s sure he saw one. Went through the whole bin only 3/4” was threaded in the inside and outside, brought that back and a meyers hub and got called blind
I assume it was used where you couldn’t thread your pipe into a connector before unions and meyers hubs came around. They’ve definitely come in hand once or twice
Chase nipple but if I'm asking an apprentice for one while I'm in a hurry it's, "the fuckin.... dammit....the...the fucking thing dude" while pointing kind-of at one.
I was an apprentice and they were asking for split washers. Never even heard of them. I haven't been yelled at like that since High School Football practice. Lol
It took all those years of my mechanic dad yelling "No, hold the fuckin light right here, like this!" to make me the Sparky I am today. Now.. pass me the deal for the thing up there!
Hahahaha same here my mother & her family came to America in 1919 , I actually understood Georgie when he would talk to me in Italian before he realized he was speaking Italian. I would say I understand George , he loved me because of that 🇺🇸🇮🇹♥️
80% of the time I see these they are without a locknut. And the arguments that the guys give me are ridiculous.
Edit: auto correct replaced locknut with lockout
Touche, however, I've been called on this by inspectors a few times in the Bay Area, so now I make all my guys do it for good practice. There's nothing like having to pull back wires traveling through 3 or 4 different boxes just to go back and put a fkn bushing on because some guy/lady is on power trip that day.
I’d love to take credit, but that’s a line from Big Bottom by Spinal Tap. If you haven’t seen it you’ve got to! And if you’ve seen it but don’t have every line memorized, you haven’t watched it enough yet haha
Spinal Tap is a fake documentary about an 80’s rock band. The scenes are improvised and some seriously classic comedy.
The actors in the band continued in to record more songs after the movie was out and are making a reboot movie right now too!
It’s called a chase nipple not a close nipple .If I asked for a close nipple and you brought me a chase nipple I’ll send you back to organize the material until you know what everything is called until the foreman I need a new apprentice unless you’re a first year then I might let it slide.
I think chase nipple is basically the only term for it lol only thing I've ever heard. I basically never use em though because they are so rarely good enough by themselves and inspectors don't like em

Chase nipple
I have been my entire life
It’s my answer for all questions. It just turned out to be 110% right on this one.
120%*
69%*
The old argument
Once you've seen one, you want to see them all.
I have nipples, Greg.
Can you milk me?
Chestfeeder.
Male or female there are 2 types
That nipple identifies as a cis
I thought it was a chase nipple if it’s threaded on the inside, and a chase bushing if it’s smooth on the inside?
Reducing bushing is threaded on the inside 🤷♂️
I’ve never seen a chase nipple threaded on the inside. Rigid couplings are smooth on the outside and threaded on the inside. Maybe that’s what you’re referring to but probably not.
Threaded inside it's a flanged reducer
Google hex bushing threaded fitting. It’s just a connector
A reducer is threaded inside, so you can reduce the pipe size. Bushing it nipple are interchangeable on them ime
And that is threaded on the inside my dude
In the one you posted, yes, not in OPs pic.
I linked what the person I commented to was talking about
Fair, I misinterpreted what you were saying.
Coming from an HVAC background I will tell you that a plumbing bushing is threaded inside and out to join 2 different size pipe. But every electrical bushing is smooth on the inside due to the fact that an electrical bushing is a bushing for the wires to avoid chafing through the insulation.
Ideally, you thread the conduit all the way down to the hex end and no threads are exposed
Seems to me like they wouldn't be for electrical work(?) But I haven't seen one
I assume it was used where you couldn’t thread your pipe into a connector before unions and meyers hubs came around. They’ve definitely come in hand once or twice
That sounds like a threaded reducer
If is threaded it on the inside and the outside is a reducer bushing
Chase tit
Chase nipple but if I'm asking an apprentice for one while I'm in a hurry it's, "the fuckin.... dammit....the...the fucking thing dude" while pointing kind-of at one.
dude i literally heard this as i read it, i do the same thing. that is word for word what i would have said. this had me laughing hard as fuck
"No, not that one... Under the things... Oh, was that where this was? But it's not what I wanted."
"No that's the wrong size" I didn't specify a size when I asked for it
Then you have to apologize to the apprentice after you've calmed down in the van. "Sorry don't take it personally"
“Don’t take it personally you’re just dumb”
This guy journeymans
I was an apprentice and they were asking for split washers. Never even heard of them. I haven't been yelled at like that since High School Football practice. Lol
It took all those years of my mechanic dad yelling "No, hold the fuckin light right here, like this!" to make me the Sparky I am today. Now.. pass me the deal for the thing up there!
I always tell my guys, "if you know what I need, you'll know what to do"
“Why are you the way that you are? I hate so much about the way that you choose to be…”
That and then at the end of the day, "you kicked ass buddy. Want to grab a beer?"
Ah, my goto is “the what-cha-fuck-it”
My first journeyman and I somehow got by calling almost everything a "damnit" or a "thingy"
My go-to for an oscillating tool is "buzz-a-matron"

As an Italian-American I can hear my childhood. You made me smile with that comment. 😁
Hahahaha same here my mother & her family came to America in 1919 , I actually understood Georgie when he would talk to me in Italian before he realized he was speaking Italian. I would say I understand George , he loved me because of that 🇺🇸🇮🇹♥️
Exactly!!!
That’s a chase nipple, unfortunately, every employee of every parts house on Earth doesn’t know that.
Chase nipple, close nipple, they have no idea. The app my company uses to order lets us include pictures with our orders. It is a game changer
They don’t chase nipples

Chase nipple, and federal bushing for the non metallic version
Chase nipple
Chase nipple. Final answer. I don't know that I've ever heard them called anything else.
Chase nipple AND they need a lock nut. - this is my hill
Who uses it without a locknut? I too call them chase nipples
80% of the time I see these they are without a locknut. And the arguments that the guys give me are ridiculous. Edit: auto correct replaced locknut with lockout
How are they securing them then? Just a bushing or something?
They tighten them to the LB or rigid coupling. Edit: I put rigid nipple.
What exactly would a locknut do if you were threading into a threaded LB? Other than eat up what little threads the chase nipple has.
Ok… so where would you put the locknut?
Rigid coupling?
Yup, ty
And a plastic bushing 😉👍
To bush or not bush is based on wire size, not conduit size.
Yes Sir, number six conductors and up 🤔

Are you saying that one should fasten a lock nut in between the enclosure and the conduit body you thread in to????
Then you would just get a box to box connector.
Why is that any better than tightening a chase nipple with channel locks? And I’m trying to figure what u/NoNonsence55 meant if ya know
On the chase nipple you're supposed to add a locknut facing down to bite into your enclosure and also to prevent your chase from coming lose.
Sure, a locknut between it and the LL or whatever I’m using it for.
Chase nipple
A bush.

I’d love to take credit, but that’s a line from Big Bottom by Spinal Tap. If you haven’t seen it you’ve got to! And if you’ve seen it but don’t have every line memorized, you haven’t watched it enough yet haha
I'm about to Google this... I learn so much on these threads
Spinal Tap is a fake documentary about an 80’s rock band. The scenes are improvised and some seriously classic comedy. The actors in the band continued in to record more songs after the movie was out and are making a reboot movie right now too!
