IIRC his contract states he he can't play the villain. Black Adam is seen by him as an anti-hero so be is fine with that. Though Black Adam should have been introduced as a straight up villain at first I think. Evolve into the anti-hero later.

I saw Black Adam at the cinema and the reaction to it was pretty immense. I thought it was a bit of a dud film, but there's no denying the audience loved it, and loved *him*. I'm surprised it didn't do better, purely because of the reaction I saw.
To me, it felt like the film felt more like a "Justice Society" film rather than a Black Adam film.
Though that could be because of Pierce Brosnan as Dr Fate was pretty good and because the overall story didn't really feel like it was focused on Black Adam.
It wouldn't have cost him anything to just fold his arms and just shut up and accept the film's failure. But no, he had to show us all his fragile ego.
I am in the minority, but actually really like Black Adam. But I enjoy nonstop action, cgi extravaganza’s probably a lot more than most people. I’m a big movie buff in general, but I just dig action flicks and the Rock really delivers with those. Skyscraper is another one most people scoff at but I freaking love. Yes, I know the Rock basically plays himself, but he is an action star so the makes sense. Is he as good as Arnie (my favorite)? No, but he’s definitely top tier in modern action films.
The promotion of Black Adam was very heavy handed, I agree with you there.
I thought it was alright, but the "turn your brain off" component was higher than even most other superhero movies. Why the hell did he wake up knowing perfect modern English, spoken with an American accent, and with familiarity of modern pop culture? The dialog was also pretty terrible even without that bit.

Main issue I have with the Rock was that energy drink of his which he marketed directly to college students. The world does not need more energy drinks. Young people do not need more encouragement to poison themselves. The Rock almost certainly does not need another income stream.

It made $389m worldwide on a production budget of $195-230m. If the movie had the standard practice marketing budget (equal to the production budget) then the movie easily lost $70 million, without any Hollywood fuckery going on.

If I recall, the practice is to open a new LLC and pour all your expenses into that one and divert profits into the parents company. That way, you can claim a loss and not pay royalties to anyone.

I stopped taking him seriously after that stupid earthquake movie from like a decade(?) ago. Just the same character as everyone’s said - hurr durr action man with “funny” quip lines every other line and “beats the odds” every single time no matter how much of an idiot plot the movie is.
He was hilariously miscast in Jungle Cruise. Blunt is like a third of his weight which creates odd scenes, but she has acting chops and he was the guy with the one liners. The movie supposedly *also* didn't break even but was shot for D+ so it doesn't matter.

He has always been like that tho, just check the whole drama behind the scenes in Fast & Furious, he and Vin Diesel hated each other so bad; The Rock is great at making himself loved by the public opinion, hes never involved in drama nor is he open about any opinion, always giving the image of a wholesome and charismatic actor yet hes nothing more than another self centered asshole; dude has never been sincere with hes fans
I saw Black Adam at the cinema and the reaction to it was pretty immense. I thought it was a bit of a dud film, but there's no denying the audience loved it, and loved *him*. I'm surprised it didn't do better, purely because of the reaction I saw.
To me, it felt like the film felt more like a "Justice Society" film rather than a Black Adam film. Though that could be because of Pierce Brosnan as Dr Fate was pretty good and because the overall story didn't really feel like it was focused on Black Adam.
I really liked Dr. Fate. I could have watched a film of just that. To me, the 1st half hour of Black Adam felt like watching 4 films.
It wouldn't have cost him anything to just fold his arms and just shut up and accept the film's failure. But no, he had to show us all his fragile ego.

I am in the minority, but actually really like Black Adam. But I enjoy nonstop action, cgi extravaganza’s probably a lot more than most people. I’m a big movie buff in general, but I just dig action flicks and the Rock really delivers with those. Skyscraper is another one most people scoff at but I freaking love. Yes, I know the Rock basically plays himself, but he is an action star so the makes sense. Is he as good as Arnie (my favorite)? No, but he’s definitely top tier in modern action films. The promotion of Black Adam was very heavy handed, I agree with you there.

I thought it was alright, but the "turn your brain off" component was higher than even most other superhero movies. Why the hell did he wake up knowing perfect modern English, spoken with an American accent, and with familiarity of modern pop culture? The dialog was also pretty terrible even without that bit. Love me some nonstop action too, but if you're going to spend that kind of money making a movie the least you could do is spring for a competent writer or two

Good movie stars and storytellers know that heroes need to lose in the beginning or middle of a story so that their win at the end has more impact. Jackie Chan's characters got their asses kicked all the time. Indiana Jones lost a golden idol to his rival in the opening scene of *Raiders of the Lost Ark.* Scott Adkins stars in many straight-to-VOD martial arts movies, and his characters often get their asses kicked. And so on. Even The Rock was well aware of this when he was a wrestler. During the Attitude era, when he was one of the biggest in-ring stars, he lost matches frequently. He chased after championships more often than he won them, and whenever he was champion, he didn't hold the title long. His match style involved getting his ass kicked, too. Rock was the type of wrestler who usually spent most of each match getting beaten up, only to rally at the very end, hit his signature moves, and then win. The Rock was fun to watch in the ring, and one of the reasons why was he was cool with losing back then. Now he's getting boring, because I guess he refuses to let his characters look vulnerable anymore.

I remember seeing the quote on how much Black Adam made and immediately thinking, that's a load of crap. This is anecdotal, but none of my friends or co-workers saw the movie, most of us didn't even know it was in theaters already. I would have believed that they made money, but... more than Captain America? Sus.
Captain America the first avenger did not do that well. It absolutely did make more than it. But it's not worth praising that you made more than a movie from 11 years ago, that was about a unknown character at the time. It's just silly boasting. In a way, I feel for the Rock on this one. If reports are true, like he really really stumped for Black Adam to be created as he said he had a personal connection with the character. However, you can’t help but feel, his ego got in the way a bit. Like the super hero landscape is getting more difficult to break into. DC’s films are floundering already. Really Black Adam should probably have been a $100m companion film to Shazam like the actual comics.
Well his ego is bruised because it’s a hundred percent his fault the movie failed. He bragged about how he bullied the studio into letting him be a decision maker on the business end as well as the characters and the overall story itself. Sometimes leave it up to the professionals. With DCs track record it could have come out bad anyway but at least he wouldn’t be the blame. He thought he could save the comoany and instead end up getting thrown under the bus as the one who destroyed it.
I think you are right on this one. I read the interviews before about how he pushed for the movie to be a blockbuster. He swung and missed. Seems like he did everything for the movie except for making it good.

He wanted this movie to succeed so badly. He is one of the few celebs I follow on social media. I grew up watching him in the WWE and enjoy some of his movie but am by no means a super-fan. He kept talking about how this movie was 15 years in the making. Then he was trying to push the audience RT score and constantly talking about the movie in general. DC and WB just can't get it right. By all accounts this movie was supposed to succeed but honestly.. The Rock just isn't a super hero. He's an action star. He had the public fall out with Vin Diesel about not returning to the Fast and Furious franchise. Those movies, as formulaic as they are, make a billion dollars every time. I'm thinking he's regretting not milking that cow a little longer.

It made $389m worldwide on a production budget of $195-230m. If the movie had the standard practice marketing budget (equal to the production budget) then the movie easily lost $70 million, without any Hollywood fuckery going on. First off upwards of $230m for this movie is fucking insane and nobody I know saw it, I can believe that it was a legitimate flop
