Still a better superhero than Black Adam

God I remember that dude

Do you wanna go. One. On. One... With the Superhero?!!

NaRa0

Either way he still pisses in his water bottles during workouts. I don’t give a shit how famous, how bad ass, whatever you are… take the 2-3 minutes to walk to a bathroom like an adult.

[deleted]

Dude, does he even lift?

Transki

He pisses into empty water bottles?

hateloggingin

Who said they were empty?

Transki

Who said they were his bottles?

NaRa0

He has mentioned in a few interviews that in order to not break his routine when he finished a bottle he will fill it back up….. he claims it saves time since he drinks so much water blah blah blah. Dude pisses in bottles.

litocam

Roark_Laughed

Underneath the padded socks

SNYDER_BIXBY_OCP

You know it's funny, Rock has been riding so high profile in N age where everyone gets caught up in something and if his "scandal" is he "leaked" released inflated numbers that the studio will easily correct that's about as funny a low level controversy as you can get. Like it's not sexual assault, being a closet bigot, supporting misogyny, Nazis, or ant LGBTQ, being pro-treason.... Like the list of shit people are getting themselves into these days... The Rock's team inflating some box office grosses is like...yeah who cares...I'd probably do the same haha

alpha_dk

> The Rock's team inflating some box office grosses is like...yeah who cares...I'd probably do the same haha Also, given the history of studios DEFLATING those same grosses.... I definitely am not going to trust their debunking at face value.

singleguy79

So paper covers rock?

MarioInOntario

Rock leaked some papers

Ithacafallsforever

“Do you smell what the Rock is cooking?” The books, apparently.

stacity

Finally the Rock has come to IRSssssssss

dallucas123

Carny by nature

monteimpala

This is the reason. He'll always be a carny, it's a thought process that's hammered into you when you train to be a wrestler. Everything is a work, nothing is real

idkalan

In the "Young Rock" show, it was told multiple times that The Rock learned from his dad to pretty much always work "the gimmick", i.e lie like a MF to make you look good. So it's not like the lessons he got in his childhood really go away, he just did it less noticeably.

SuperTeamRyan

You mean he got better at it.

Lazy_Chemistry

That show is where I get my Rock lore from too. I was surprised at how good it is.

Kujen

I like the show, but could do without the modern day part with him actually in it, running for president or whatever. The part where he’s a kid is the best.

TPJchief87

I’m honestly shocked the execs came out and said anything. Must be wanting to cut ties and/or reign the rock in a bit. Like homie we will embarrass you if you talk out of turn.

Seahawk715

Did he burn a lot of bridges with WB by demanding that cavil come back to play Superman? It sounds like the rock is trying to swing the leverage hammer and the execs are trying to take it away

Lemonjello23

A carny in Hollywood? Now I've seen everything

Cornmunkey

You can take a man from the carny business, but you can't take thr carny business from a man.

wasssupb

> Johnson mentioned that he hopes to run for office himself eventually I hope this goal has changed since then

TheBlackSwarm

You know I would respect Dwayne more if he just admitted his failure and said “I tried something it didn’t work out/ make as much money as I hoped but thanks to the fans that did go out to see it not everything you set out to do always works out” Now it just looks like Dwayne has a fragile ego and can’t even own up to failure. I don’t think this will dramatically impact his career going forward but I lost any respect for him honestly. Black Adam underperforming will hopefully be a wake up call to him to change his formula and do something drastically different going forward. People have gotten tired of seeing him do the same old shit.

[deleted]

PedanticBoutBaseball

True, but also its pretty common knowledge this has been a pet project for him for years. To the point his own personal production company is involved. So everyone knows he has a much bigger role to play in this movie than just "employee"

[deleted]

[удалено]

senseven

In 20 years and endless streaming, this movie will have made his costs turning to profit. With this kind of money, nothing is [really a failure](https://www.ranker.com/list/notorious-flops-that-made-money/nathan-gibson). He might had the power to shuffle around details but can't change the script. At some point the producers will run with whatever is there and he would had to break contract to stop the movie from happening. Its not like he was sitting in a room with the writers and pitched ideas. The movie was clearly *build* to be a save bet, not something fresh and new. This isn't third phase Marvel.

KennyBlankenship_69

The guys visibly roided out of his mind and says it’s all natural, of course he has a fragile ego lmao

expatdo2insurance

>The guys visibly roided out of his mind and says it’s all natural You just described nearly every modern action hero and most of the older ones too.

Ooften

“What? I just eat a lot of protein” 50-year-old shredded Hugh Jackman.

SomeCountryFriedBS

His was just as much about [dehydration](https://www.esquire.com/lifestyle/health/news/a53724/hugh-jackman-logan-workout/).

mtarascio

They all are. It's just body building. The show date is lined up with their shirtless shooting days.

chewcok

Not only that, but in bodybuilding and I'm guessing in movies diuretics are used to dehydrate, which are also considered performance enhancing drugs. I got nothing wrong with Ped's in media but I wish that people would understand that steroids aren't the only kind and that almost everyone who is gets jacked and shredded for a movie is probably using them.

mtarascio

Yep, 100% shitting out water the week leading up.

chewcok

All that for one shirtless scene haha.

GiantRobotBears

….Steroids 99%, dehydration 1%

IrishRogue3

I’m pretty shocked that Arnold hasn’t dropped dead yet- he was a major user and probs still is. Grandpas don’t naturally look like that. Who knows maybe Arnie is like Keith Richard’s and hang upside down at night

Any-Mirror3478

They most likely get all their shit from a medical doctor. They truly might be delusional enough to thinks that's not "doing juice"

Littlebelo

That’s the line that always cracks me up. “I don’t do steroids! I just take supplements of (lists the scientific names of like a dozen steroids).”

Jeffy29

I mean yeah it’s called TRT, Rock is probably on some other shit too when he wants to bulk up but even safe dosage of TRT is great for maintaining muscle mass even at old age. I doubt Arnold is doing anything else besides it these days and he still looks great in his 70s.

reyeg79383

There is quite the difference between Dwayne and basically anyone else in a super hero movie though. Seriously, compare him to peak Chris Evans, or Pratt, Holland, Cavill, Affleck. There is no one who comes to my mind quite as ridiculous as Rock.

expatdo2insurance

Rocks got better genetics, better training routine and probably higher dosages. They are still juiced.

Biggre

We're talking about someone who has in his contact that he can't lose a fight.

CM09CM

I also think there’s something that the ending has to be wholesome so the audience leaves feeling happy is a must too. Guess he didn’t expect everyone to be happy just leaving the theater after Black Adam.

Zexks

DC probably isn’t the best franchise for him.

TheLastPirate123

I can just picture Dwayne as Green Lantern, trying his best to act but failing miserably with the "chopped up girlfriend in the fridge" scene.

Zexks

Eye raise looking into the fridge followed by a long sniff look in the camera and put on his glasses.

PeanutNSFWandJelly

IIRC his contract states he he can't play the villain. Black Adam is seen by him as an anti-hero so be is fine with that. Though Black Adam should have been introduced as a straight up villain at first I think. Evolve into the anti-hero later.

[deleted]

I think him pretending to he natty is more out of fear that he'll lose most of his opportunities if it is publicly known he uses steroids. There's still a strong stigma against steroids because the public sees it as "cheating" I think, and if he was honest about not being natural a lot of big businesses would perhaps not want to be associated with that stigma. But who knows, maybe it really is just ego.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ZiOnIsNeXtLeBrOn

I mean every single character he plays are the same. Roided out characters whose only definable characteristic is that they are jacked as shit. In every single contract, he apparently has a stipulation that his character can never lose and that the director has to use his writers.

[deleted]

threlnari97

I stopped taking him seriously after that stupid earthquake movie from like a decade(?) ago. Just the same character as everyone’s said - hurr durr action man with “funny” quip lines every other line and “beats the odds” every single time no matter how much of an idiot plot the movie is.

senseven

He was hilariously miscast in Jungle Cruise. Blunt is like a third of his weight which creates odd scenes, but she has acting chops and he was the guy with the one liners. The movie supposedly *also* didn't break even but was shot for D+ so it doesn't matter.

Kastlestud

San Andreas? The one with Alexandra Daddario and Mr. Fantastic?

VitaminPb

The one where Bakersfield is on a helicopter direct line between Los Angeles and San Francisco?

Yo_Wats_Good

He wasn’t in Jungle Cruise. Gf made me watch it and it was surprisingly nice and Johnson had a lot of heart.

Mister_BIB

He has always been like that tho, just check the whole drama behind the scenes in Fast & Furious, he and Vin Diesel hated each other so bad; The Rock is great at making himself loved by the public opinion, hes never involved in drama nor is he open about any opinion, always giving the image of a wholesome and charismatic actor yet hes nothing more than another self centered asshole; dude has never been sincere with hes fans

willflameboy

I saw Black Adam at the cinema and the reaction to it was pretty immense. I thought it was a bit of a dud film, but there's no denying the audience loved it, and loved *him*. I'm surprised it didn't do better, purely because of the reaction I saw.

idkalan

To me, it felt like the film felt more like a "Justice Society" film rather than a Black Adam film. Though that could be because of Pierce Brosnan as Dr Fate was pretty good and because the overall story didn't really feel like it was focused on Black Adam.

willflameboy

I really liked Dr. Fate. I could have watched a film of just that. To me, the 1st half hour of Black Adam felt like watching 4 films.

TheUmbrellaMan1

It wouldn't have cost him anything to just fold his arms and just shut up and accept the film's failure. But no, he had to show us all his fragile ego.

SOSovereign

No way he could do that. He had a lot of his self image tied up in this character lol

tollfree01

I was/am a big fan but the cringe factor was off the charts with his self promotion. He actually thought he was Black Adam. Lol. Movie was also shit.

SuperDizz

I am in the minority, but actually really like Black Adam. But I enjoy nonstop action, cgi extravaganza’s probably a lot more than most people. I’m a big movie buff in general, but I just dig action flicks and the Rock really delivers with those. Skyscraper is another one most people scoff at but I freaking love. Yes, I know the Rock basically plays himself, but he is an action star so the makes sense. Is he as good as Arnie (my favorite)? No, but he’s definitely top tier in modern action films. The promotion of Black Adam was very heavy handed, I agree with you there.

TheBobTodd

Someone as good as Arnie?! ![gif](giphy|3ov9jLsBqPh6rjuHuM|downsized)

Sporkitized

I thought it was alright, but the "turn your brain off" component was higher than even most other superhero movies. Why the hell did he wake up knowing perfect modern English, spoken with an American accent, and with familiarity of modern pop culture? The dialog was also pretty terrible even without that bit. Love me some nonstop action too, but if you're going to spend that kind of money making a movie the least you could do is spring for a competent writer or two

pugwalker

I didnt even know it was a failure until all of these news reports about the rock trying to hide it was a failure.

classicpotroast

Sounds like he’s preparing himself to become President or something

MonasDarling

Bullshit like this reminds me why I have a lot of respect for actors like Matt Smith. Morbius wasn't the best film but Smith was very gracious about the experience. https://www.rollingstone.co.uk/tv/features/matt-smith-house-of-the-dragon-doctor-who-interview-20919/ *Morbius — his recent sortie into the on-screen superhero genre — is the flop that launched a million smirking memes. Though Smith, as the main antagonist — a vampire investment banker — has once again emerged relatively unscathed from the wreckage, common consent being he’s the best thing in it. “Yeah, it was thrown under the bus,” he smiles. “But you just have to roll with it. What else are you gonna do? It’s a film, at the end of the day, we’re not saving lives. For whatever reason, it didn’t quite work out and… It is what it is.”*

Impossible-Animator6

Johnson needs to stop playing himself. Bautista has shown exceptional range in last few years, more than Johnson in the last decade.

WastedPresident

I'm okay with Johnson playing himself. I'll just watch anything with Bautista instead.

buku43v3r

Have you seen the new m. Night trailer? Bautista is in it and it looks like he’s gonna act the fuck out of that movie

IHavePoopedBefore

I would even put John Cena on that list. His Peacemaker is such a dork, and he has some mental breakdowns on that show. Frankly he's already shown me more than the Rock has. The Rock is always the Rock. His flaws in acting are similar to his flaws in wrestling. Everyone remembers his promos so fondly but they got old. His promos would become an assortment of catchphrases and innuendos. His matches were a collection of the same old spots he always did. The Rock is one of the best ever, but he also gets comfortable doing the same things

hushpolocaps69

It’s funny to think how he’s scared of James Gunn.

TheUmbrellaMan1

Dwayne Johnson is weird. He has this clause in his contracts that he cannot lose a fight in the movie. He thinks Shazam is beneath him, in fact he refused a cameo in Shazam 2. He wants a Black Adam vs Superman movie but everyone wants Black Adam vs Shazam. This dude tweets all the time but has yet to congratulate James Gunn for being co-CEO of DCEU.

jacopoliss

That’s crazy, can you imagine if Schwarzenegger had that clause. There would be no terminator movie, or he would have killed Sara Conner. “ I like the part but I’ll only take it if the machines win in the end.”

mondaymoderate

To be fair the only reason Arnold is a good guy in Terminator 2 is because he didn’t want his kids to see him killing people like he did in the first one. So that’s why we got T-1000 instead.

jacopoliss

No, no, he was REPROGRAMMED in the future and sent back!

RevolverPhoenix

>Black Adam vs Superman Talk about a huge ego.

Naldo273

Also aren't they the literal opposites story- and character-wise? It's like somebody opposing the Joker and the Batman being in the same movie. I don't read the comics I don't give a shit about Black Adam, the only reason I would've seen this if it had Shazam

Clever_Word_Play

Yeah, the wizard Shazam literally gave both them their powers. He is introduced as a villain in Captain Marvel/Shazam's story..

betcher73

I think multiple action stars have a clause that they cannot lose a fight.

TJ_McWeaksauce

Good movie stars and storytellers know that heroes need to lose in the beginning or middle of a story so that their win at the end has more impact. Jackie Chan's characters got their asses kicked all the time. Indiana Jones lost a golden idol to his rival in the opening scene of *Raiders of the Lost Ark.* Scott Adkins stars in many straight-to-VOD martial arts movies, and his characters often get their asses kicked. And so on. Even The Rock was well aware of this when he was a wrestler. During the Attitude era, when he was one of the biggest in-ring stars, he lost matches frequently. He chased after championships more often than he won them, and whenever he was champion, he didn't hold the title long. His match style involved getting his ass kicked, too. Rock was the type of wrestler who usually spent most of each match getting beaten up, only to rally at the very end, hit his signature moves, and then win. The Rock was fun to watch in the ring, and one of the reasons why was he was cool with losing back then. Now he's getting boring, because I guess he refuses to let his characters look vulnerable anymore.

karna42

Man Jackie knew how to take a beating, he's got way to many classics that just take u back to the old days

aloysiuslamb

The scene in Rumble in the Bronx where the bad guys are just obliterating him with glass bottles always had me on the edge of my seat as a kid, like no way this guy can come back and be the hero after all this.

-ImOnTheReddit-

I don’t even see why its a big deal to lose a fight, makes you look like more of a pussy if you can’t accept an L every now and again.

Ok_Relationship_705

Exactly. Van Damme would get his ribs shattered every movie. Then come back and whoop some ass. Made the wins feel earned.

Elementium

Jackie chan's whole thing was constantly getting his butt whooped.

Ok_Relationship_705

Word. That final fight scene of Drunken Master. Or Rumble In The Bronx. That glass bottle scene. Still gets me.

[deleted]

For every Van Damme, there was a Steven Seagal.

mecon320

The two best action heroes I can think of are Indiana Jones and John McClane, and they both regularly get the shit kicked out of them.

ThePiperMan

As a wrestler the guy lost all the time even once he was at the top.

Xsafa

That’s the wrestling business unless you’re the Hulkster or Cena

Kytyngurl2

Yes! And narrative wise, seeing the good guy lose sometimes makes everything more interesting. It raises stakes, audience sympathy, and other such things. It’s a common trope for that reason.

Jay_the_Artisan

Every main character in the Fast and Furious franchise including Ludacris. Edit: He is also guaranteed a personal team of spell checkers to roam the internet.

shadowst17

It's because The Rock is a brand. Everything Dwayne Johnson does is decided by a committee. The guy is the most fake person on the planet. He's never posted a single genuine thing online that didn't promote his brand or one of his many products he's invested in like the Energy drink or gin.

KingDorkFTC

Well, he doesn't want to be forced to lose.

CLint_FLicker

Gunn already has 2 wrestler friends who are better actors.

GrooseandGoot

This guy is out here attempting to build a cult of personality on his brand to enter politics. I'm paying attention to when you lie about the little things Dwayne Johnson. That tells me you're more than willing to lie about the bigger things in the future

[deleted]

Yes, seriously

scarfinati

Did the rock just jump the shark

bashyourscript

Hopefully. Getting tired of him, Jamie Foxx, Mark Wahlberg, and that short comedian in movies.

jack_geller

Don’t let a movie exec see that comment. They may try to put all 4 of them in a movie together.

redeemedleafblower

I feel like Jamie foxx doesn’t belong lol

OminOus_PancakeS

Agreed. Foxx is a very good actor. Happy for the others to disappear. I'm surprised Wahlberg's racially aggravated assault doesn't get talked about. Main issue I have with the Rock was that energy drink of his which he marketed directly to college students. The world does not need more energy drinks. Young people do not need more encouragement to poison themselves. The Rock almost certainly does not need another income stream. Couldn't he have come up with a product that made the world a little better? Or just not launch a product that made the world a little worse?

Neat_Ad6499

I mean Jaime Foxx is exceptionally talented….

FoxMuldertheGrey

fuck you what did Jamie Fox ever do to you?

TUMS_FESTIVAL

Seriously. The guy has an Oscar for best actor. Lumping him in with The Rock is just wrong.

NakedGoose

Its just embarrassing for him. Dudes running around social media screaming at the rooftops that his film made 50 mil profit. And praising it for having the same box office as A24 movies and Captain America.

cruelhumor

I remember seeing the quote on how much Black Adam made and immediately thinking, that's a load of crap. This is anecdotal, but none of my friends or co-workers saw the movie, most of us didn't even know it was in theaters already. I would have believed that they made money, but... more than Captain America? Sus.

NakedGoose

Captain America the first avenger did not do that well. It absolutely did make more than it. But it's not worth praising that you made more than a movie from 11 years ago, that was about a unknown character at the time. It's just silly boasting. Edit: and I mean it made more in the box office. It's budget was probably higher so I don't think it made more overall

AndyP8

Captain America was an unknown character? I literally thought they invented Black Adam for the screen lol

Phl_worldwide

In a way, I feel for the Rock on this one. If reports are true, like he really really stumped for Black Adam to be created as he said he had a personal connection with the character. However, you can’t help but feel, his ego got in the way a bit. Like the super hero landscape is getting more difficult to break into. DC’s films are floundering already. Really Black Adam should probably have been a $100m companion film to Shazam like the actual comics.

SkygodAlien

Well his ego is bruised because it’s a hundred percent his fault the movie failed. He bragged about how he bullied the studio into letting him be a decision maker on the business end as well as the characters and the overall story itself. Sometimes leave it up to the professionals. With DCs track record it could have come out bad anyway but at least he wouldn’t be the blame. He thought he could save the comoany and instead end up getting thrown under the bus as the one who destroyed it.

Phl_worldwide

I think you are right on this one. I read the interviews before about how he pushed for the movie to be a blockbuster. He swung and missed. Seems like he did everything for the movie except for making it good.

[deleted]

i am curious how this is going to play out. james gunn and his partner sound like they are looking to do a complete revamp which might be for the best so i was curious how the rock with all his power would handle it. i believe the story was dc heads did not want cavil back so rock went behind their backs to i guess the biggest head and secure cavil's return and how HE was not going to take no for an answer. lol well shit now you got gunn & co looking to revamp shit and wonder woman sounds like the 1st casualty and is on pause? does gunn have enough power to call up the rock and say yea man black adam 2 ain't happening?

Bloxsmith

I’m starting to just get over this guy. He’s been in movies for as long as I can remember. Not bad ones but nothing amazing. Just kinda feels like a dude obsessed with feeding his ego. Whether he’s a good/ nice guy or not, and I’m sure he is. It’s just a big turn off to someone’s personality when they just constantly want to be the it guy. Just getting a bad taste

KennyBlankenship_69

Who knew that getting any actor/actress that’s a name in front of a green screen for a new movie every quarter with more and more obscure superheroes as it goes along would get old

Ghenges

He wanted this movie to succeed so badly. He is one of the few celebs I follow on social media. I grew up watching him in the WWE and enjoy some of his movie but am by no means a super-fan. He kept talking about how this movie was 15 years in the making. Then he was trying to push the audience RT score and constantly talking about the movie in general. DC and WB just can't get it right. By all accounts this movie was supposed to succeed but honestly.. The Rock just isn't a super hero. He's an action star. He had the public fall out with Vin Diesel about not returning to the Fast and Furious franchise. Those movies, as formulaic as they are, make a billion dollars every time. I'm thinking he's regretting not milking that cow a little longer.

Borsolino6969

Wow a guy that uses steroids and growth hormones to artificially inflate his muscle mass and augment his body is a liar with a fragile ego… who could’ve guessed.

TheLastPirate123

Dwayne actually got faker after he stopped pretending to be Elvis in the WWF. Here's my favourite fake Dwayne moments 1) Sharing videos of other people calling him humble on his own social media. 2) Claiming to be natural. 3) Sells water bottles claiming they bring people together 4) Constantly exploiting his Samoan heritage to sell crap like energy drinks and tequila 5) Managed to cut himself lifting weights, then recorded himself bleeding talking about how blood won't stop him because he's such a tough guy (Because as we know tough guys want the world to know how tough they are on Instagram) 6) Decided to do a "good thing" by buying Snickers from a shop he used to steal from, but ofcourse had to have a camera crew with him for those precious publicity shots.

MathematicianSea6618

He is having an ego breakdown over the failure of this movie. Hopefully, it humbles him some and he chooses more wisely in the future. You cannot inhale your own farts forever

Naldo273

It made $389m worldwide on a production budget of $195-230m. If the movie had the standard practice marketing budget (equal to the production budget) then the movie easily lost $70 million, without any Hollywood fuckery going on. First off upwards of $230m for this movie is fucking insane and nobody I know saw it, I can believe that it was a legitimate flop

popeboyQ

I'm so happy this movie failed. I'm tired of seeing DJ in fucking everything. Pain and Gain was fun, but that was about it.

In his earlier movies he had more range but now he’s one dimensional. And whoever he plays has to change to be more like him than him playing the character. Black Adam is a borderline fascist doing what he things he has to but you can tell rock wanted to smooth allot of those edges to fit his Hollywood image.

So Dwayne is saying my movie is going to be profitable worldwide after stream and dvd release. Studio is saying he’s lying, downing their own movies future profits. Let me guess there is still some payments owed to Dwayne based on how good the movie continues to do and it’s in the studios best interest to shut that kind of talk down in an attempt to discredit any future under payment claims by Dwayne Johnson.

coldliketherockies

This is odd behavior. No one asked them to spend insane budget for a stand alone not well known superhero movie released in October, a month that rarely has 200+ million domestic grossers but they did. What were they expecting to happen? And then to not own up to it

Krazyflipz

Apparently he is a real piece of shit and partially responsible for Brendan Frasier losing both the Mummy franchise lead role and subsequently his career.

"Can you smell what the Rock is cooking?!" The books, apparently.

PSouthern

Wait, you’re saying that The Rock lied about something to make himself look good? That’s impossible, now pass the tren.
