nesh34

Fans or bookies? I think most English think France are the favourites but bookies have England.

lapst_

Fun beacause in France most French think England are the favourite

moss_2703

Really???

lapst_

At least on the same line yes. You have a very good team

JimJonesdrinkkoolaid

You guys have a crazy strong squad though in seemingly all positions lol. I mean Michael Olise can't even make the squad lol.

dead_idols

But then we see "treble winning Jack Grealish left out"

Low-Aside-6633

If Deschamps didn't select Olise, it may be because he feels more English than French. He spent most of his youth and soccer career in England, although he did play for the French youth team, and is in Thierry Henry's shortlist for the 2024 Olympics. This remains to be confirmed.

The_39th_Step

He’s a Londoner but I don’t think he wants to play for England. It could be Algeria or Nigeria?

JimJonesdrinkkoolaid

I would have thought that if he wanted to play for England, he would have made himself available to play. To my knowledge he never has.

Low-Aside-6633

Time will tell. On the other hand, I'm not going to hide the fact that I'd prefer to see him in our team. 🙃

madeupofthesewords

Good try, but we all know you're going to beat us, in the final, on penalties.

Rymundo88

I think we'll meet them in the semis, won't we (unless something goes a bit screwy in the group stages)

Flashbirds_69

If we beat anyone I'm pretty sure it's not on penalties haha. I was 3 yo (1998) the last time it happened, I've seen france lose a WC final live in penalties twice but never win one ever.

De79TN

It's interesting because from what I've seen both France and england match well in a penalty shootout, although I still believe the last one was lost because of the pressure lloris put on the takers. Kind of reminded me of Shilton in italia 90 and being too old to get close to the German penalties.

gunnersroyale

Pressure of lloris rather than our illustrious history in penalties ?

A-J-U-K

Our defence is abysmal

Pow67

Lol they need to take a look at our defence situation then. Don’t even know 100% if Shaw will be fit yet, Maguire is out, and other than Stones the CB options aren’t filling me with a lot confidence.

lapst_

At their club, quite a few of our players have had average seasons. Especially in defence. I think the difference is that we've had better results in recent competitions, but that doesn't mean anything. I think that England and France are both favourites. And I think that portugal is a dangerous underdog

Absolutum_Live

Shaw, Guehi, Stones, Walker is a fantastic back four.

A-J-U-K

It’s really not

notnotaschizo

I think it’s safe to say that Shaw will play, he wouldn’t have made it through the cuts if not. But yeah our CB situation is dire

LawProfessional6513

At least it’s not Dier

Oliver_Boisen

I read that Shaw might be fit to play the Denmark game.

Absolutum_Live

Surely not?

absurdmcman

Been amazed at the number of people here in France saying that. Guess it has something to do with the close match in the last world cup, but honestly can't see it for England this time.

CharlieManson67

What about the bookies? Are you favourites?

lapst_

No it’s you for the bookies, we’re just behind

A_I-G

Excuse me, I have a question to ask since you are in France. In England all the betting companies have England as the outright favourites but I want to know whether the betting companies in places like France have England as the favourites aswell.

Talmirion

England are favourites, but we (France) are close second, then there's Germany. Personally, I would rather say France 1st and Portugal 2nd.

A_I-G

Thank you

CharlieManson67

That was the question I was asking. Probably didn’t word it right

rocky_raccoon_68

I think that's just defensive negativity. I can't be dissapointed if I'm not expecting to win, you know. Or kind of what Man City does every season, try to lose the pressure to win

CharlieManson67

I was asking about bookies but it’s good to hear from a fans point of view as well

HeartCrafty2961

The bookies are only reflecting on how people are betting, and their financial fallout. England could be dogshit and France the creme de la creme, but if everyone is betting on England then their odds go down.

CharlieManson67

Exactly. This is the reason I was asking. Because in most countries people will be betting on their own country. Even if it’s countries with no chance. Like Tottenham fans betting on Tottenham to win the League

AberdeenEnthusiast

In Scotland we think we are favourites

Uhtred101

If it wasn't for the injuries and drop outs I'd have us already won it

Icy-Nerve-4760

I love the fact, that for years English ironic ‘we gunna win’ bantz is derided as arrogance by Scot’s, but as soon as you get a whiff of tournament football your fan base does the exact same thing. And I’m not hating, I like it

AncientCommission219

The fans here don’t genuinely believe we’re favourites though, pretty much everyone thinks France are

No-Unit6672

Certainly ‘one of’ the favourites, France just aren’t cruising at the moment, I’ve just got a funny feeling they will under perform. - Germany are the other big boys for me, wouldn’t be surprised if they do well

OptimusBiceps

Fantastic question. The bookies in England have England as favourites and I'm always convinced that it's because of the quantity of bets on them to win! Odds are determined by the market as much as footballing reality. So would be really interesting to hear whether other countries have their own team's odds of winning inflated or England are still favourites.

CharlieManson67

Yeah it’s interesting to hear about clubs further down the line as I’m guessing France, England and Germany will all be favourites in their own countries

PlatformFeeling8451

While it is true that the odds at your local bookies are not representative of true probability, it is not in the way that you are implying. If England have a 4.4 odds chance of winning the Euros, a bookie will price the odds at 4.0 (price at Paddy Power today), their profit comes from the difference between true odds and the odds people are offered. Bookmakers looking to attract more punters (around the Euros, for example), will increase the odds from 4.0 to 4.2 so that they can say they have "Best odds" for betting. They are still making a profit though, because the real odds are 4.4, but the customers only get 4.2. Attracting more people to bet is what the bookies want, so lowering the odds further (and making England bigger favourites) isn't a good idea. If Ladbrokes are offering odds of 3.5, and Paddy Power are offering 4 then more people will bet with Paddy Power. So long as the real odds (4.4) are higher than the given odds (4), the bookies don't have to worry about losing money. No bookie is saying "Come and bet with us, look how low our odds are". If England are down as favourites to win Euro 2024, then that is because the bookies (and traders) believe that England are the most likely to win than France, Germany, Portugal etc. **However, at real odds of 4.5 (based on Exchange betting prices) it means that the most likely outcome based on probability is that a team** ***other*** **than England will win it.** The best way to find out how accurate the odds of bookies are is to go to an exchange and find the lay price. This is the price of betting **against** England to win the tournament. If the odds are very tight, then the price is more accurate. Because it means that all traders (across the world, not just in England) share the same belief. At Smarkets, England are 4.4 to win, and 4.5 not to win. This means that the odds are very accurately priced. As I said earlier though, this does not mean that England are more likely to win than not win. If a horse was priced at 4.4, you would not expect that horse to win the race. It's just more likely to win than the 46.5 odds horse.

SchroedingersTap

I’d say Scotland, but that’s just delusion. Most I talk to here think either England or France-I see the tournament having those two meet in the Semi. Winner of that wins the tournament, general consensus up here.

UniqueJaguar2321

Don't know a single person who hasn't got France as favourites.

PhatmanScoop64

I think Germany tbh

nEivind

France's worst enemy is France. I am confident they'll drama their way out of the tournament.

AcceptableCustomer89

Sounds like England "who's going to stop England's front 6? The back 5."

UniqueJaguar2321

we all love a good French mutiny and capitulation, long overdue.

michaelscottdundmiff

Holland are normally a good shout for a self destruct too. The germans and the Italians are the opposite. Both seem to get tournament football in a way other countries dont

CharlieManson67

Even though if I think France will win it (although I think Belgium are a good bet at 22/1)) I’d still put my money on England. That’s obviously why England are favourites

UniqueJaguar2321

With our defence and record against the big teams I doubt we get past the first top team we play. Always hope but that's all.

TheStonedEdge

Sensible and realistic beliefs

Vapes_And_Red_Bull

Only gone out to extremely bad luck in the last 2 tournaments, pure penalty bad luck, other than that we would be euro winners and 2x World Cup winners

Lone-sith

Agahahhaahhahahahahahahahahahahahshhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahhaahhagahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahaworld cup

Upbeat_Age5689

i live in germany and i feel like the majority believes in germany winning it

Call_Me_Rivale

Either Germany or France

madeupofthesewords

I'd put France first, but Germany not far behind just from home advantage.

Micha1106

Should\`ve win the game 5:1 from clear chances, game was good. But that is what could break our neck again, missing too many good chances.

YonkouTFT

England here. Unsure if they actually are rated higher than France or it is due to a bit better fixtures

Oliver_Boisen

Probably because most people in this country watch English football and are more familiar with the players. Oddset has England on 4.00 and France on 5.00 so there's not a massive gap.

moss_2703

France or Germany

Albanian_shqipe

Albania?

CharlieManson67

750/1 in England. Worth a score I reckon

papa_miesh

Italy Spain or France

AintGoingtoGoa

I think almost every team is in with a good chance of winning so my list of favourites would be: Germany, Belgium, France, Portugal, Spain, Scotland, Turkey, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Albania, Denmark, Netherlands, Romania, Switzerland, Serbia, Czech Republic, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Georgia, Ukraine, Poland

PositionAlternative3

>I think almost every team Except england >is in with a good chance of winning

bigpalia

I would say France or Germany. Nobody "trust" England here, every two years they are favourites but never manage to win.

Small_Blueberry_7313

Crazy-Length170

I live in England and England are the bookies favourites, followed by France and Germany

Sir-Chris-Finch

Yeah but i feel like people dont actually think England are more likely to win than France. Certainly not most people ive spoken to about it anyway

Dark7saber

England or France (but probably France after Maguire was cut from the England squad).

yellow_berry

We believe that Croatia can win it

Low-Aside-6633

Best answer.

n22rwrdr

England or France I'd say

AttemptImpossible111

France

Rich-Wrangler6701

England are favs in England France a close 2nd. I don't think either will win it.  Portugal for me holland dark horses

[deleted]

France i would say, personally would like to see netherlands and denmark do well apart from england

Absolutum_Live

France in England, I imagine.

CharlieManson67

England are 16/5 France 17/4 so England are just favourite. I’m yet to see any answers from someone in France but I’m guessing there they would be clear favs

christianrojoisme

Everyone talks about France in pubs I go to in England

Organic_Chemist9678

England and France are obviously a notch above the rest, they played a very close game at the last world cup and will likely do the same here. Germany are next and then a whole bunch of teams

Frequent-Jump-4536

I don't know about England being a notch above anyone when it comes to internationals. I don't think this team is any stronger than in the past and in the past they've failed to impress

Organic_Chemist9678

They reached the last final which was quite impressive including a number of very good results on the way although the final itself was a poor performance At the last WC they played France in the QF and took them to penalties on a game where you couldn't split the teams. They were by far the best two teams at the tournament

HotPotatoWithCheese

Will mimic every other English flair in here. Only media pundits and bookies have us as favourites to win. Still not convinced we'll get past a France or Portugal who we will have to beat bar an insane upset.

HotPotatoWithCheese

Only pundits and the bookies have us as favourites, though. I'm not convinced we'll get past a France or Portugal, one of which we will have to eventually face in later stages barring some insane upset.

CandourDinkumOil

Don’t think we’ll get past Portugal? I mean sure, anything can happen, but I think if we played that game 100 times, we’d win more often than not.

No-Unit6672

I think that’s the problem, it’s not played over 100 games. If it was the players would gauge the game and take control through learning. In a one off tournament game you rely far more on tactics, shape and team selection - our manager is Gareth Southgate…. Enough said

IsraLFP

Mostly Germany and France

Rolifant

England is the one to beat for us

takadano

I live in England. Everyone thinks France will win.

A-J-U-K

I’m in England and nobody I know thinks we’re going to win

MarcusWhittingham

Betting markets don’t work the way you think they do, England are the favourites and it’s not just because we’re in England.

Oliver_Boisen

Bookies have England. General public will probably say France. Personally I think it'll be a France-Germany final, with France winning it.

Dynomite64

Ourselves, what is this question?

Classic-Bat-4495

Germany or Portugal 100%

Good-Examination8111

I mean it would be crazy if Germany lift the trophy in their home ground since the last nation that did that was France in 84

Sharky123ok

In Holland we think France will win. People here expect there is a 3% change that we will win the cup

Alpastor_Moody

Holland have a very good team. Probably the best defense on paper. Midfield is good as well, though I think I read that Frenkie might not play. Attack is fine, could be better. I have Holland as my 6th favorite behind Germany and Spain but honestly you could switch around the order of those teams any given minute as I think they’re more or less evenly matched.

TryWaste7691

Mostly France and Germany. Followed by England.

Livid_Medicine3046

I was on holiday in Germany last week and almost every german I spoke to said they think England will win. A couple said France...

Micha1106

Most people in germany thinks france or germany. I put england on 1. France seems bit negligent and germany just ain\`t stable and players they are putting their hope in like musiala or wirtz ain\`t got the mentality to win a tournament imo.

TheBestThereEverWas3

Interesting that Portugal have not one single mention on here thus far. I guess they’re not quite favourite material, but they’re insanely strong and my tip to win.

OForreta

We were one of the favourites, or even the favourite, in 2004 and for 2016 we were nowhere near the favourites. Based on that, I am glad we are not being mentioned so we don't jinx it

BrooklynMaximov

Tbf Portugal got incredibly lucky to have won Euro in 2016. They hardly won matches(most went to pens in KOs and they were third in their league group iirc). They scored quite less but the defense and Rui Patricio was top notch. Don't see it this year. Many teams better this time.

PrimaryOtter

Bookies say England, reality we think France are favourites France favourites England, Spain, Germany on paper/home advantage should have a good chance Portugal though are not in anyone’s thoughts despite having a solid squad in all departments (manager excluded)

surfhobo

i don’t see england going the distance , i’d put money on france or scotland 50/50 really

surfhobo

in scotland it is scotland

Low-Aside-6633

In France, England are clearly the most feared team, ahead of Germany (who are playing at home). Their offensive line is terrifying, and the midfield is very solid too. I think France have a real advantage at the back, with Upamecano (very successful in the French team), Konaté, Pavard (especially in central defense), Saliba and, to a lesser extent, Koundé, who can always play in the middle. On the left, too, Ferland Mendy (who would be very useful if a match against England were to come up) and Théo Hernandez, who forms an explosive duo with Mbappé. On the right, on the other hand, things are a little more uncertain, with Clauss coming off a difficult season with his club (but his right foot is still magic) and Koundé often disappointing and worrying.

Zeb12a

its bizarre, from England and I wouldn't consider us as favourites at all

Wide_Astronaut_366

Are we? Most people I have spoken to have France as favourites, with them knocking us out convincingly. Only hope we have is another French civil war

No-Sandwich-2997

Germany ofc

Vlad22

O

Vlad22

I'm Romanian, but it's either between France and Portugal for me, no brainer here. England winning it would be nice, too.

LongVNFR

I hope France champions. I'm from Vietnam J'aime la France 🇻🇳❤️🇫🇷

KingDracarys86

England even though we have never knocked a big nation put on foreign soil

Stephensonite

Hate to say it, but if England face either France, Portugal or Germany they will definitely be going out. Therefore, England won't be winning this tournament.

Small_Blueberry_7313

Its cool that no one say Italy We always played great tournaments when nobody got us winning! It’s coming Rooome it’s coming Rooome 🤩💙💚🤍❤️💙🏆🤞🍀

Ok_Grade5147

In Croatia we think we are the favourites, and if we don’t reach the semifinals everyone will think we are shit

OilOk1641

In my country, it's probably France but that's just because we don't want the English to win!

CharlieManson67

The feeling is very mutual 😆

OilOk1641

Me and my fellow countrymen find it hard to admit, but England really do have a chance this time. Very strong team with lots of depth.

RebuildingTim

In Scotland, anyone but Scotland is the favourite. Fuck it, I'll still back the lads to the hilt.

Juanandome

France, England and Germany are the favourites im Spain. In fourth place it comes Portugal. And then a bunch of teams thar either can do well and reach semifinals or fail miserably and be eliminated in group stage: Spain, Italy, Croatia, Belgium, Netherlands, etc

wonderkid_10

Most talked about is France obviously with current squad depth being superb but I personally think Germany or Belgium can challenge them to it

JUANITO8583

portugal

thecuriousjourneyman

Portugal are favourites

No-Vermicelli9306

We have a better team than Germany. England and France are better, but England manage to fuck it up each and every time. France are the ones to beat and we did it back in Euro 2016,and back then we were nowhere near the favorites.

Designer-Pilot-5131

England are favourites on the exchanges, currently at around 5.2/5.3. I’m based in England and so can’t speak with absolute certainty about bookmakers in other countries, but England pretty much have to be favourites overseas as well, otherwise there would be risk free money up for grabs by arb’ing the overseas bookmaker against the exchanges.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CharlieManson67

I’ll give you 6 million to one for one of those teams

Pervynstuff

England might be one of the favorites, but I think most fans outside England want them to fail miserably and would rather see (almost) any other country win.

StackerNoob

The English midfield and attack is absolutely insane quality. The defence is good, but I feel that’s the only real weakness in the squad. Goalkeepers aren’t world class either. If England can keep the ball in midfield and not make silly mistakes they have a great chance

football-lover-2

Small_Blueberry_7313

Its coming Rome 💙💚🤍❤️💙👋🤩

football-lover-2

It really isnt

CharlieManson67

Let’s hope so!!

football-lover-2

Mate I have to doubts

CharlieManson67

Yeah, I can’t see it. We have a really good offence but I can see the defence being an issue. We can dream though as we always do. Just hope we can win something in my lifetime and I’m late 30’s so times a tickin’

football-lover-2

I'm mid 20's but If we gave a midfield injury then i worry

CharlieManson67

I’m more concerned about our defence. I think we have one of the strongest attacks and the best striker in the world at the moment (other than a certain Norwegian we haven’t got to worry about) but our defence could be our downfall imo

football-lover-2

Just worried for France

LukaTheTooka

Every goddamn tournament England is projected as the favorite to win, I honestly don't know a lot of countries are very evenly matched

Paddystan

Odds are dumb and your reading English media.  English bookies obviously take the most bets on England, therefore England are the favourites.  The media just prints the same articles for every big tournament and now we're here.  Croatian betmakers will be more favourable to yourselves. "Follow the money" as the quote goes.....just not when theres 40odd million England fans sticking a tenner on the off chance it might fuckin' come home for once.

No-Unit6672

Nah that’s rubbish, we go into every tournament optimistic, but this is maybe the first/second tournament (Euro 2004) that I feel we are potential favourites for. Very few people have said otherwise over the years, you are just doing the usual England bashing.

MarcusWhittingham

England were the 3rd or 4th favourites last tournament, 2nd favourites the tournament before that and 4th favourites the tournament before… I honestly don’t remember the last time we were the favourites to win so I’m not sure where you’ve got that from.

CandourDinkumOil

Came here to say the same thing. Haven’t any proper memory of a tournament before France ‘98 but I can’t recall a single tournament where we were favourites - not once. I think they’re making assumptions here based on the media.

MarcusWhittingham

Judging from the comments on here I think a good 90% of them don’t understand how betting markets work and what the term ‘favourites’ even means to be fair.

CandourDinkumOil

I think you’re right. Tbf my understanding could be wrong. I understood it that the bookies will make the most likely team to win the lowest odds to minimise loss. I.e. the favourites. Sure mass betting can influence the odds, you see this a lot on horses but that’s often due to “tips” and mass betting after social media “tipsters”, but it’s not as significant in football and England have solidly been ~3/1 (always been favourites) since literally day 1 the bet was available. I know this because I’m always eager to see them and check them ASAP.

MarcusWhittingham

You’re pretty much bang on the money. I think many on here think that just because people bet on something it will adjust the general bookies market (which can happen on weaker markets); though in this situation it is a very strong market and it’s nothing like a volatile horse racing market for example, bookies have taken millions on England but they’re not going to make them 6/4 just to try and balance their book as they also have to be competitive. The betting exchanges also play a huge part and that’s what I mean about it being a strong market; it has taken almost £2m on Betfair Exchange so it’s about as strong as you’ll see, bookies have to keep an eye on the exchange as to not ‘arb’ the market and take bad business.

CandourDinkumOil

Awesome. Interesting, thank you.

Dear-Discussion-8763

That’s not how the bookies work. England have the best odds here because people in England (surprise surprise) are more inclined to place a bet on England which causes the odds to subsequently adjust to give England better odds. Pretty sure most people in England including pundits etc will think France are favourites even if deep down we hope maybe somehow we can pull it out the bag and win it!

CharlieManson67

Yeah this is why I’m asking. I’m guessing in France they would be clear favourites. But what about somewhere like Spain. I doubt Spain would be favourites even in their own country

madscandi

Betting markets are global, not local

CharlieManson67

The more money the bookies are likely to lose the higher they put the odds. In England we are more likely to bet on England

madscandi

That's not the point, and not as simple as that. Money from different people makes for different signals. Sharp bettors will control the market through Pinnacle and Betfair. The market of Euro 2024 outright winner isn't isolated in each country, but traded globally by all the bettors in the market. So odds will not vary from country to country unless they have an added tax that just brings the odds down across the board. There are very few, if any, trading rooms from any odds provider that operate in just one country. And they all move off each other. Source: have run multiple trading operations.
