While it is true that the odds at your local bookies are not representative of true probability, it is not in the way that you are implying.
If England have a 4.4 odds chance of winning the Euros, a bookie will price the odds at 4.0 (price at Paddy Power today), their profit comes from the difference between true odds and the odds people are offered.
Bookmakers looking to attract more punters (around the Euros, for example), will increase the odds from 4.0 to 4.2 so that they can say they have "Best odds" for betting.
They are still making a profit though, because the real odds are 4.4, but the customers only get 4.2.
Attracting more people to bet is what the bookies want, so lowering the odds further (and making England bigger favourites) isn't a good idea. If Ladbrokes are offering odds of 3.5, and Paddy Power are offering 4 then more people will bet with Paddy Power.
So long as the real odds (4.4) are higher than the given odds (4), the bookies don't have to worry about losing money.
No bookie is saying "Come and bet with us, look how low our odds are".
If England are down as favourites to win Euro 2024, then that is because the bookies (and traders) believe that England are the most likely to win than France, Germany, Portugal etc.

Probably because most people in this country watch English football and are more familiar with the players. Oddset has England on 4.00 and France on 5.00 so there's not a massive gap.

Io ragionavo in relazione alle altre nazionali forti, nessuno dei sei giocatori del nostro attacco sarebbe nemmeno convocato in Germania/Francia/Inghilterra/Portogallo/Spagna, in quel senso debole, non in linea generale. Poi può succedere di tutto, come dici tu la mia unica fonte di speranza è Spalletti, se ci fosse un allenatore normale con questa squadra "normale" sarei già rassegnato. L'unico problema è che Spalletti ha avuto solamente 8 partite (10 con le due amichevoli di ora) per preparare un Europeo, non si potrà vedere tutto quello che avrebbe voluto fare. Holland have a very good team. Probably the best defense on paper. Midfield is good as well, though I think I read that Frenkie might not play. Attack is fine, could be better. I have Holland as my 6th favorite behind Germany and Spain but honestly you could switch around the order of those teams any given minute as I think they’re more or less evenly matched.

Tbf Portugal got incredibly lucky to have won Euro in 2016. They hardly won matches(most went to pens in KOs and they were third in their league group iirc). They scored quite less but the defense and Rui Patricio was top notch. Don't see it this year. Many teams better this time.

On the right, on the other hand, things are a little more uncertain, with Clauss coming off a difficult season with his club (but his right foot is still magic) and Koundé often disappointing and worrying.
Hate to say it, but if England face either France, Portugal or Germany they will definitely be going out. Therefore, England won't be winning this tournament.

The English midfield and attack is absolutely insane quality. The defence is good, but I feel that’s the only real weakness in the squad. Goalkeepers aren’t world class either. If England can keep the ball in midfield and not make silly mistakes they have a great chance

I think you’re right. Tbf my understanding could be wrong. I understood it that the bookies will make the most likely team to win the lowest odds to minimise loss. I.e. the favourites. Sure mass betting can influence the odds, you see this a lot on horses but that’s often due to “tips” and mass betting after social media “tipsters”, but it’s not as significant in football and England have solidly been ~3/1 (always been favourites) since literally day 1 the bet was available. I know this because I’m always eager to see them and check them ASAP.

I think many on here think that just because people bet on something it will adjust the general bookies market (which can happen on weaker markets); though in this situation it is a very strong market and it’s nothing like a volatile horse racing market for example, bookies have taken millions on England but they’re not going to make them 6/4 just to try and balance their book as they also have to be competitive.
The betting exchanges also play a huge part and that’s what I mean about it being a strong market; it has taken almost £2m on Betfair Exchange so it’s about as strong as you’ll see, bookies have to keep an eye on the exchange as to not ‘arb’ the market and take bad business.
That’s not how the bookies work. England have the best odds here because people in England (surprise surprise) are more inclined to place a bet on England which causes the odds to subsequently adjust to give England better odds.
Pretty sure most people in England including pundits etc will think France are favourites even if deep down we hope maybe somehow we can pull it out the bag and win it!

That's not the point, and not as simple as that. Money from different people makes for different signals. Sharp bettors will control the market through Pinnacle and Betfair.
The market of Euro 2024 outright winner isn't isolated in each country, but traded globally by all the bettors in the market. So odds will not vary from country to country unless they have an added tax that just brings the odds down across the board.
There are very few, if any, trading rooms from any odds provider that operate in just one country. And they all move off each other.

Io ragionavo in relazione alle altre nazionali forti, nessuno dei sei giocatori del nostro attacco sarebbe nemmeno convocato in Germania/Francia/Inghilterra/Portogallo/Spagna, in quel senso debole, non in linea generale. Poi può succedere di tutto, come dici tu la mia unica fonte di speranza è Spalletti, se ci fosse un allenatore normale con questa squadra "normale" sarei già rassegnato. L'unico problema è che Spalletti ha avuto solamente 8 partite (10 con le due amichevoli di ora) per preparare un Europeo, non si potrà vedere tutto quello che avrebbe voluto fare. La vera italia di Spalletti si vedrà al mondiale credo.

Se prendiamo singolarmente Fullkrug no, peró ci sono giocatori tipo Wirtz, Havertz, Musiala che noi purtoppo davanti ci sogniamo. Chieda speriamo di averlo in forma come 3 anni fa, poi Scamacca spero si confermi definitivamente perché non mi fido molto di Retegui. Segna ma mi sembra un po’ troppo scollato dal resto, tecnicamente un po’ troppo grezzo, Scamacca mi piace molto di più.

I think that’s the problem, it’s not played over 100 games. If it was the players would gauge the game and take control through learning. In a one off tournament game you rely far more on tactics, shape and team selection - our manager is Gareth Southgate…. Enough said

Holland have a very good team. Probably the best defense on paper. Midfield is good as well, though I think I read that Frenkie might not play. Attack is fine, could be better. I have Holland as my 6th favorite behind Germany and Spain but honestly you could switch around the order of those teams any given minute as I think they’re more or less evenly matched.

Tbf Portugal got incredibly lucky to have won Euro in 2016. They hardly won matches(most went to pens in KOs and they were third in their league group iirc). They scored quite less but the defense and Rui Patricio was top notch. Don't see it this year. Many teams better this time.

I think France have a real advantage at the back, with Upamecano (very successful in the French team), Konaté, Pavard (especially in central defense), Saliba and, to a lesser extent, Koundé, who can always play in the middle. On the left, too, Ferland Mendy (who would be very useful if a match against England were to come up) and Théo Hernandez, who forms an explosive duo with Mbappé. On the right, on the other hand, things are a little more uncertain, with Clauss coming off a difficult season with his club (but his right foot is still magic) and Koundé often disappointing and worrying.

England are favourites on the exchanges, currently at around 5.2/5.3. I’m based in England and so can’t speak with absolute certainty about bookmakers in other countries, but England pretty much have to be favourites overseas as well, otherwise there would be risk free money up for grabs by arb’ing the overseas bookmaker against the exchanges.

The English midfield and attack is absolutely insane quality. The defence is good, but I feel that’s the only real weakness in the squad. Goalkeepers aren’t world class either. If England can keep the ball in midfield and not make silly mistakes they have a great chance

Odds are dumb and your reading English media. English bookies obviously take the most bets on England, therefore England are the favourites. The media just prints the same articles for every big tournament and now we're here. Croatian betmakers will be more favourable to yourselves. "Follow the money" as the quote goes.....just not when theres 40odd million England fans sticking a tenner on the off chance it might fuckin' come home for once.
Nah that’s rubbish, we go into every tournament optimistic, but this is maybe the first/second tournament (Euro 2004) that I feel we are potential favourites for. Very few people have said otherwise over the years, you are just doing the usual England bashing.

Came here to say the same thing. Haven’t any proper memory of a tournament before France ‘98 but I can’t recall a single tournament where we were favourites - not once. I think they’re making assumptions here based on the media.

I think you’re right. Tbf my understanding could be wrong. I understood it that the bookies will make the most likely team to win the lowest odds to minimise loss. I.e. the favourites. Sure mass betting can influence the odds, you see this a lot on horses but that’s often due to “tips” and mass betting after social media “tipsters”, but it’s not as significant in football and England have solidly been ~3/1 (always been favourites) since literally day 1 the bet was available. I know this because I’m always eager to see them and check them ASAP.
You’re pretty much bang on the money. I think many on here think that just because people bet on something it will adjust the general bookies market (which can happen on weaker markets); though in this situation it is a very strong market and it’s nothing like a volatile horse racing market for example, bookies have taken millions on England but they’re not going to make them 6/4 just to try and balance their book as they also have to be competitive. The betting exchanges also play a huge part and that’s what I mean about it being a strong market; it has taken almost £2m on Betfair Exchange so it’s about as strong as you’ll see, bookies have to keep an eye on the exchange as to not ‘arb’ the market and take bad business.

That’s not how the bookies work. England have the best odds here because people in England (surprise surprise) are more inclined to place a bet on England which causes the odds to subsequently adjust to give England better odds. Pretty sure most people in England including pundits etc will think France are favourites even if deep down we hope maybe somehow we can pull it out the bag and win it!

So odds will not vary from country to country unless they have an added tax that just brings the odds down across the board.
