They’ve got quite a diverse team to be fair. The average player in the Dutch national team is less commonly of Dutch heritage than the average Dutch person.
Only a small part of the reason for our length is genetics. We used to be a short country. It’s mainly our diet with a lot of milk and cheese in it that made the last generations tall. Milk was advertised by our government to help out the farmers. But people are having a different diet now and the length is decreasing. Nearly all players are born in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It’s just a coincidence that this team is shorter on average.
Your talking out of your ass with the milk and cheese argument. Why we are so tall nowadays is something that's not understood. The milk and cheese diet argument is just pseudoscience.
You are right about the fact that we used to be a short country. In the 17th century other nations described the Dutch as short.
It’s debatable that they have the tallest men on earth. The Dinaric Alps region (Montenegro, Hercegovina, Dalmatia) is probably taller as of today. The average Dutchie is getting smaller recently (according to official [statistics bureau of NL](https://longreads.cbs.nl/the-netherlands-in-numbers-2021/how-tall-are-dutch-people/)). The average was higher 20 years ago compared to today.
I'm 6ft2 and I felt like a giant there 😨 I think those stats are manipulated since they are reported by the countries themselves.
In Serbia I'm just normal, even in my friend group there are 5 guys taller than me 🥲
I am 6’3” and my brief visit to Amsterdam scared me. The first time I was surrounded by so many people my height or more. I realized how freakish I am.
I'm 6'4 and live there. If I'm walking around in the city I'm generally taller than most but there's loads of people around my height, some are way taller which is crazy.
In comparison in some countries I've been I could walk around for days without seeing anyone come remotely close to my height.
As someone who has lived their whole life in the Netherlands and is 5’11, i have barely seen any guy who is shorter than me. I can’t see shit at concerts. Even 60% of women are around my length. Don’t be fooled, the Dutch are still very tall
There are players in the squad that are above average in height compared to the median height for a portuguese person
Edit: edited to not include name of players
Not a single team under 180cm? TIL footballers are way taller than I thought lol. Kinda strange since so many great players are in the 170-175cm range.
CBs, CDMs, and GKs are basically always tall, so they contribute to that a lot. A lot of strikers are also tall. But yeah, the dribbles still tend to be a bit shorter.
They can have whatever ancestry they want, but they represent my country. I am going to support my country in this Euro Cup. LET'S GO SPAIN
You can support whoever you want.
In Türkiye, the new generation is much higher than the old generation, and our national team has a lot of football players raised in Germany. Environmental factors affect height.
https://wannabetaller.com/average-height-of-europe-2024/
Yes, Turkey's average height has increased recently. Also, these are special athletes. Turkey has trained many pivot athletes in basketball. In fact, although we have had many pivots in the last ten years, we don’ t have a talented player at the guard position.
It's as simple as this: athletes get picked on physical reasons. If there's 1 anomaly kid that's 6'0 and 7 others that are 5'8 then the 6'0 is more likely to be picked over the 7 others because he has more promising genetics.
Tallest player including goalies is Serbian GK Vanja Milinković-Savić, he’s over 2m tall.
Tallest outfield player is certainly Jack Hendry of Scotland, he’s 196cm tall.
Shortest is likely N’golo Kanté at 168cm. But someone else could be shorter.
Us Spaniards tend to be quite short. Plus, our playing style greatly favors nimble players with low centers of gravity. What really surprises me is how short the Scots are, as not only are they quite tall on average but their playing style is much more suited to taller, stronger players.
I understand, and I agree with you in relation to the Scottish. I am also surprised to the fact that the Portuguese and Italians, for example, despite closely related to the Spanish, are, on average, at this Euro 2024, much taller than them, which is shocking to say the least.
It really boils down to playing style, I think. Every European country has players 190cm+, but a 195cm player who’d fit perfectly into a defensively-minded Italian team would be burdensome to a Spanish side.
It’s been a thing for a while now. One of the recent Scotland managers called it out - it caused some controversy at the time - as a reason why we hadn’t qualified for a major tournament https://www.skysports.com/football/news/12017/11073182/gordon-strachan-blames-scotland-s-genetics-for-world-cup-failure#:~:text=%22Genetically%20we%20are%20behind%2C%22,second%20smallest%2C%20apart%20from%20Spain.&text=%22We%20had%20to%20pick%20a,see%20what%20we%20can%20do.

Trying to think who is super short apart from foden.
We've lost a fair bit of height with maguire out, which probably means our average defender height is 6ft so on low side.
Low centre of gravity = winners / going home early (delete as appropriate as England fan already petrified for meeting Serbia as a fine technical team with excellent movement in the attacking third now compounded by being a team of giants)
To be fair, Spain has been always known for its fast passing style and is not that common that they use centers and air passes. I think the median is so low because most of the players are midfielders and it lowers it, obviously. As long as we still have strong and tall defenders, the median of the whole team is not that important.
The selection process works. Each team has 3-4 goalkeepers, all around 185-195 cm tall, plus a couple of tall field players, around 185 cm, to play headers. So, footballers are always going to be taller than the average person in the country.
Weird that the Netherlands are 14th when they have the tallest men on earth, im like 6'1 and i felt short there...
They’ve got quite a diverse team to be fair. The average player in the Dutch national team is less commonly of Dutch heritage than the average Dutch person.
Thats an interesting point !
you mean they are not ethnically dutch

It's because the country is below sea level and we have to be taller to average it out
The shortest will always be the last to know it is raining, and the first to drown.
Hopefully you speak Dutch, here you go: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4sDFOPBn_J8
You meant “height”… Lmao first time seeing someone using “length”
Oh I did indeed! In Dutch we use the word “lengte” in this context, so I got them mixed up
Ironically, one of the largest immigrant groups in the Netherlands is Indonesian, whose people are the shortest in the world.
But not many if any on the national team afaik
Only Reijnders, who is Moluccan. But he’s 1.85 so..
I think Rijnders is the only one of some Indonesian descent.

Yeah I feel like Latvia and Lithuania have a lot of Giants too
I’m really happy with that, I’m only 1.58m (Female, but still) always feel so tiny
They're actually in 6th place.
That's because half their players aren't Dutch
I'm 6ft2 and I felt like a giant there 😨 I think those stats are manipulated since they are reported by the countries themselves. In Serbia I'm just normal, even in my friend group there are 5 guys taller than me 🥲

dutch average height for men over 18 is only 183 bruh chill out countries like germany and other european countries are at 180 cm
our country is below sea level, we have to make up for that by growing a little taller
Jesus, really ? I went around Tilburg and Eindehoven and I couldnt believe how tall they were, felt very weird...
As someone who has lived their whole life in the Netherlands and is 5’11, i have barely seen any guy who is shorter than me. I can’t see shit at concerts. Even 60% of women are around my length. Don’t be fooled, the Dutch are still very tall
average dutch height for men over 18 is 183 cm
How is Portugal almost the same as the Netherlands lol
Netherlands is very diverse not a lot of ,,true” dutch men playing for it
very true. Same for France I think
🤔
Sounds a bit like a no true Dutchman to me
There are players in the squad that are above average in height compared to the median height for a portuguese person Edit: edited to not include name of players
Yah I know, but average Portuguese people are not that tall compared to Dutch (I'm Portuguese too) but yeah i guess it's good!
The pool of athletes doesn't represent the avg height of a country
I agree with my fellow country person
This is the right answer. I mean even the so called "real" Dutch players are below average height (Blind, Veerman, Schouten)
What does that even mean 😶
That means - elite footballers in Turkey might be significantly taller on average than Accountants in Turkey.
The young generations are almost as tall as the rest of Europe, it’s the old people that push the average value down
Not a single team under 180cm? TIL footballers are way taller than I thought lol. Kinda strange since so many great players are in the 170-175cm range.

LETS GO SPAIN!!!
Why would i support spain if most of them arent even spanish
They can have whatever ancestry they want, but they represent my country. I am going to support my country in this Euro Cup. LET'S GO SPAIN You can support whoever you want.
It is the same in most of the countries playing .... immigrants are a big portion of the teams
Most of them?
no just 2 from what i see so far
How is Türkiye that high? That’s literally 10cm more than the countries average height.
In Türkiye, the new generation is much higher than the old generation, and our national team has a lot of football players raised in Germany. Environmental factors affect height.

Not only environmental factors, some have a German as one of their parents.
Turkiye is the german B team
The kebab connection lives on

What you talking about?
Spain isn't really surprising I remember that incredible Barcelona team and watching every ball go over their heads on corners.
Lmfao really only have aroujo for aerial presence.
> that incredible Barcelona team > Araujo Pick one.
I sense a slavic tendency
Damn footballers (aside NL etc) seem to be much taller than the general population of their countries.
Does anyone have an idea as to who the shortest and tallest players in the tournament are?
Tallest player including goalies is Serbian GK Vanja Milinković-Savić, he’s over 2m tall. Tallest outfield player is certainly Jack Hendry of Scotland, he’s 196cm tall. Shortest is likely N’golo Kanté at 168cm. But someone else could be shorter.
I’m surprised by Hendry. 196cm doesn’t seem especially tall considering he’s only 8cm taller than Serbia’s average of 188cm.
> Tallest outfield player is certainly Jack Hendry of Scotland, he’s 196cm tall Jannik Vestergaard of Denmark is 199cm
In a sweepstake I got Georgia
I got albania Not much better
Serbs are tall, so it isn't surprising at all. I am surprised, however, is how short the Ukrainians and the Spanish are.
Us Spaniards tend to be quite short. Plus, our playing style greatly favors nimble players with low centers of gravity. What really surprises me is how short the Scots are, as not only are they quite tall on average but their playing style is much more suited to taller, stronger players.

Sure sure, let's talk about the elephant in the room though. I don't think I have seen an Italian in real life who's over 1.70m

Cool stats info, will ne interesting to see how much bearing it has. Quite surprising england, Scotland and Ukraine are so low.
A
So England are going to concede set pieces.
Trying to think who is super short apart from foden. We've lost a fair bit of height with maguire out, which probably means our average defender height is 6ft so on low side.
Hah! England is my height
Low centre of gravity = winners / going home early (delete as appropriate as England fan already petrified for meeting Serbia as a fine technical team with excellent movement in the attacking third now compounded by being a team of giants)
The squirrelly little German who just scored the first goal is only 177.
Slavs balling 😁
Median is kinda of an odd average to use. Wouldn't mean be more informative
It depends on the distribution, for normal data mean is the way to go, but when the distribution is not symmetrical it's not
England, Scotland smaller than Italians? I'm surprised. Southern Slavs big mofos that's why they rock in basketball.
Cucurella and Carvajal f**ked up for Spain 😃
Pay attention, it say MEDIAN not MEAN.

Funny that Portuguese are half a centimeter shorter than the Dutch.
