Because as someone said in another post, France is known for playing negative football, so the natural counter to that is to play negative as well. Which is why we see teams that are usually very offensive play defense and see the rather defensive France have to build up, which isn't what they are the best at. This is also why they don't play well into smaller teams that do not have the ability to play positive.
It's a gamble, let's play in a way that makes the opponent worse even if it makes us worse too, hopefully we will be less worse than they are. Doesn't mean there's nothing to see beyond that.
Sure I'd love to see a positive French team, but that's how Deschamps likes it and although it's infuriating seeing players of that level not making the show they could, when you know what to look for, there are other aspects of football that are just as interesting as the flashy goal scoring part.

In order for a counter-attack to be effective, you need the opposition to have the ball in areas you can hurt them from.
i think both austria and netherlands tried to play as offensive as possible without being to open. and in both matches (especially in the one against austria) you had like 1-3 counter attacks where one player is alone in front of the gk. Maybe spain can keep up with you but i doubt that anyone else can (right now), therefore most teams just give you the ball because then you are less threatening

The ball would have most probably ended in the goal keeper hands. He was right on it but the deflection made the ball change direction and thus couldn't be saved.
