What a game! Portugal vs Slovenia kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Both teams played incredibly well, but Portugal's defense was just unbeatable. Can't wait to see how they perform in next round!
"Ronaldos, the problem," he is, but why are we pretending like portugal is playing well? They've had lots of possession, but they don't create anything it's constantly just back passes. Expect a lot more from bruno and bernando, who are constantly revered as the great Portuguese players. Cancelo receives the wild role playing forward and back. However, he can not produce shite if he's gonna cross cross properly, not 7 feet in the air. Concencao was the worst sub mf did not do anything. Mendes was brilliant he's better playmaker than the playmakers. I want rebuttals. Please change my mind with evidence.
Swear if the "star studded lineup" was performing like they are gassed up to be. I'll say it take Ronaldo off, but bro, they can't even create chances for themselves, let alone Ronaldo. I honestly don't even mind he took that free kick the entire game they've been serving horrible crosses- so many shite corners. I was frustrated, too. Embarassing shot, but wtv maybe he'll perform better against France.
The stories that this game has to write, the masculanity it asks for, the fucking adrenaline rush it brings, everything is just .....
(Any word i write will diminish its value)
Most typical Portuguese performance in history:
1) under-perform incredibly all night
2) fail to score
3) get bailed out by an absolute legend of a goal keeper and then pretend like Ronaldo is the reason.
I have no idea how they keep producing such impressive goal keepers, this needs to be studied for science.
Icl bro, you're waffling hard. No one's praising him for his penalty goal this match in the shoot outs instead its D. Costa as he deserves it most for his 3 saves in a row.
I'm not "wAfFlInG" lmao I'm pointing out general trends and Portugal fans are getting fiesty because they know it's the truth.Ā Portugal is better off benching him.Ā I said what I said.
I ain't even a Portgual fan, and I agree with Ronaldo being benched off. I'm saying Portuguese fans haven't been praising Ronaldo whatsoever they feel bad for him cause he got all emotional, but that definitely doesn't mean they think he carried them whatsoever.
Cup competitions are all about results lmao. Good performances are an added bonus.
Iām not even a Portugal fan, but France havenāt even stellar themselves either.
I like Portugal tbh.Ā I am just sick of investing any emotion in their performance when they continually underperform.Ā They should be considered like France or Spain or Germany but they just choke always.Ā Ā
My favorite moment of all time was when Ricardo beat England with no gloves, but it's so frustrating to constantly see them not play the football they are capable of in regulation time.
What you just described is Belgium, and yet they still donāt get nearly as much flak as Portugal does. Probably due to the Ronaldo factor.
Belgium have stunk up the last 2-3 major tournaments despite the embarrassing riches of talent in their squad.
Even coming into the tournament, most of not all bookies had Portugal as 4th favourites behind France, England, Germany, and Spain. They havenāt been blitzing but have done the job so far.
Iām talking about from a neutral and broad sporting view.
Belgium have been equally if not worst than England and yet arenāt getting nearly as much flak.
That's fair, but I think Ronaldo and England invite the flak with their obnoxious attitudes tbh.Ā Belgium is just a snoozefest mcnothing burger that peoole forget about 5 minutes after the games ends.
They could have 100% ball possession; doesnāt mean shit if they donāt score. Humble yourself, theyāre going to get trounced by France in the quarters.
Portugal (but not Ronaldo) deserved the win, the team played great but were up against some really great defence with Slovenia.
Ronaldo was a big baby, complaining about his teammates as well as complaining as soon he lost the ball. Taking all the free kicks himself even though he missed two of them. Like, just try another shooter if you already missed two.
Also, complains to the referee as soon somebody fouls him but when he jumps straight into the goalkeeper he shrugged it off as nothing.
Ronaldo is 40, Jamal is 16, Ronaldo is a much bigger baby and ego than a teenager.
You guys crack me up. He is passionate about the game and his team. And while Portugal has a ton of talent, nobody can take free kicks like Ronaldo even at his age.
I agree with some of what you said, but I just saw a stat saying that Ronaldo has had 58 free kick attempts at major international tournaments and scored ... ONE. His free kick strike rate in recent years is just appalling. He should let other plays have a go sometimes.
So heās the only player who is passionate about football? Cause no other professional player acts the same way as him
I donāt bite the whole āpassionate thingā, if you have played professionall football for more than 20 years, you should be more mature in the game. Just look at Pepe and Ibra (who now is retired), Pepe was a little dickhead back in the day, but now heās more calm in his play than before. Ibra made a comeback to the national team and on those games he played only as a game maker who created opportunities. 15 years ago he didnāt act this way. Both of these players are passionate about the game, Ibra was so passionate that he played with a damage knee every game at the end of his career.
Ronaldo is still the same player he was when he was 20, thereās no development as a person at all.
But donāt get me wrong, I have enjoyed Ronaldoās skills these past 20 years and I think heās one of the greatest players of all time. He just needs to stop acting this way and start encouraging his teammates and become the role model a 40 year old national captain is supposed to be.
People out there actually thinking Ronaldo is passionate about the game and his team. All he cares about is his image. If he really cared about the game and his team, it would mean trusting his mates, which clearly he doesn't as he keeps wanting to do the free kicks himself.
This guy is and has always been full of himself.
Not mad at Portugal winning Iām mad at Ronaldo āredemptionā what fucking redemption he nearly cost Portugal the game. Looking all smug after the penalties he should just be relieved
120 minutes against Slovenia, especially considering the fact that Sesko shouldāve made it 1-0, is cause for celebration? I would think itās more a combination of embarrassment and relief.
Mate, cricket is still (somehow) one of our national sports, we've perfected the art of dozing while a game is boring and jolting awake when something interesting happens.
Youāre going to start a never ending argument. Let Messi play his copa America and Ronaldo play his euro.
Any slight bridge between them will cause chaos among fans.
Say what you will about Ronaldo, but he fucked up the in-game penalty, was obviously devastated (and probably knew an absolute shitshow would immediately unfold online)... Only to step up less than half an hour later to take the first penalty and smash it right in. Not many people would have that kind of mental strength. Hats off to him.
Donāt get me wrong, I have always supported Ronaldo, but you are taking a small moment and forgetting all the shit he did in the match. Taking those freekicks like he is 22, not making any significant contributions in play, losing the ball almost every time in front of the goal, losing the aerial battle to an unheard of defender, then missing a penalty and letting emotions get better of him.
Itās time to retire and let the rebuild happen.
I'm not saying this rectified any shortcomings in his perfomance prior to that moment. But whatever those were and however serious they may have been, it's still worth acknowledging that in this specific moment, he showed incredible resilience and focus. Handling such insane pressure the way he did deserves recognition on its own imho.
The Swedish speakers said something about a player from Azerbaijan who shot a penalty at the crossbar in the game against Uruguay, but then scored in the penalty shootout
Good game from Slovenia, not a bad perfromance atall, but I hoped for the best and prepared for the worst. Am so excited for FrancePortugal, I'll remember to bring my pillow for it!
I hope portugal realises they aren't playing the tournament for one player, it's a team game, and if he doesn't fit in the combination, it's better he is benched for a better player at the moment, he might be subbed in when needed
Which player, in particularly was amazing. I hear a lot of this, but not a name mentioned. Please give me something they've done as well. The portugal players are so unenergetic. They try to play like France but don't play any of the runners and play back passes. I don't think an Albanian has any place to speak.
yeah portugals offense was revolving entirely around ronaldo, passing the ball to him 4 TIMES š¤Æš¤Æš¤Æ. man you canāt watch the game telling me that ronaldo was the reason for their bad performance, their synergy as a whole is just bad
Slovenia was unreal šÆšÆšÆ
And holy shit, how good is Costa??? Stunning goalkeeper
I'm happy we don't have to play against them in case we win tomorrow lol
The CR7 choice of coming back on penalty for first was to prove himself then for psychologically subjugate oblak, it could be a success or a disaster... I think it worked. Real champion work
Yeah Sesko should have scored....
But as a RB Salzburg fan, we know he misses too often. Great talent but no consistency yet. Unfortunately.
Slovenia could have advanced today. Sadly Portugal advances now.
This game is actually one of the games of the tournament. The Stoics of Slovenia vs the passion of Ranaldo and Costa (apparently some other guys were there too but I didn't see them). Ronaldo misses a penalty and breaks down, Sesko misses a 1-on-1 (follow-up should have been scored), and then after all that hard work, Costa cooks Slovenia in goal on penalties.
Do people really enjoy the underdog story so much? I can't imagine anyone actually loving the way Slovenia played. Most of their players spent 120 minutes keeping the goalkeeper company...
Yes, because it's boring seeing the same teams go again in the finals.
This tournament put some light on the underdogs but now most of them are going out 1 by 1.
Would have been nice to see a final with the underdogs. But... Oh well.
Well a great deal of us come from small countries so underdog stories is normal too us. And rooting for the big rich countries kind of sucks. They go into the tournaments with all the advantages so F them.

Martinez got it wrong again. The flanks were amazing tonight but focusing on crossing when the crossing in the other games was so bad was the wrong choice again.
Middle was so vacant of runners just like against the Czechs.
Ronaldo's finishing was genuinely unnaturally bad tonight, but his runs in the box were ignored due to the poor crossing.
Portugal's DNA is to win the hard way, so that's the ticket you buy supporting them.

Sorry but Ronaldos Time is over.
Ronaldo is cooked, so a new hero arises: Diogo Costa, proud son of Switzerland šØš

Well fought Slovenia! You have nothing to be ashamed of!
I'm neutral. Say what you want, but good that we won't see sesko again at this tournament. Jesus, how can you miss two 100% chances.
Imagine struggle to play 45 mins without cramps and gotta sprint after playing for 120 mins, good luck.
Goalkeeper aura
Most typical Portuguese performance in history: 1) under-perform incredibly all night 2) fail to score 3) get bailed out by an absolute legend of a goal keeper and then pretend like Ronaldo is the reason. I supported the Slovenians. Now, there are no more underdogs in the quarterfinals.
Romania is the last hope.
Send me a printscreen of someone saying that ronaldo was the one to thank this match. Or are you just hating on the guy?
In general he gets way too much credit. You're better off fielding Costa and 10 clones of him.
11 goalkeepers ? How are you not hired yet
How many goals did Portugal score? 0. Wow neat.Ā
And having 11 goalkeepers would surely make that number higher š
It wouldn't make it lower.
Are you 12?
I mean you're the one throwing a tantrum here.
Icl bro, you're waffling hard. No one's praising him for his penalty goal this match in the shoot outs instead its D. Costa as he deserves it most for his 3 saves in a row.

Good.Ā Hopefully they keep this attitude.Ā They could have won this with less trouble without his fuckery today.
So youāre going to conveniently ignore the 3-0 win against an in-inform Turkey side? Especially when it couldāve been more.
Congrats on not under-performing in exactly 1 of 4 games.Ā Good luck against France.Ā I actually do hope yall win.
Cup competitions are all about results lmao. Good performances are an added bonus. Iām not even a Portugal fan, but France havenāt even stellar themselves either.

Calm down, you should have won easily in 90 minutes. This was embarrassing and painful to watch until penalty kicks.
Equal to plumbers then ? Be respectful, Slovenia fought bravely until the end.
gross
Discrediting Slovenia by calling them plumbers is not exactly a good look for Portugal considering the close game that was just played
āClose gameā and āboring gameā are 2 different things
The game ended tied and went to penalties, canāt get closer than that
68% vs 32% ball possessionā¦ pretty close I guess.
They could have 100% ball possession; doesnāt mean shit if they donāt score. Humble yourself, theyāre going to get trounced by France in the quarters.
I hope you kill us like you did at the euro 2016 at your home bro
Looking forward to the match, weāll see what happens.
Oh yeah? We will see about that then
Man city had 68% possession against Real Madrid. Who lifted the UCL?
Also 93 vs 32 attacks is pretty close
You know how it is with football and fanatics. It's sad but people get tribalistic to this point.
Still incredible for Slovenia. Now they're outcredible
Portugal (but not Ronaldo) deserved the win, the team played great but were up against some really great defence with Slovenia. This is not passion but mental illness
Youāre right considering Ronaldoās free kick conversion rate the past few years, nobody can take them as poorly as Ronaldo.
I agree with some of what you said, but I just saw a stat saying that Ronaldo has had 58 free kick attempts at major international tournaments and scored ... ONE. His free kick strike rate in recent years is just appalling. He should let other plays have a go sometimes.
ROFL!
Seethe and cope
Youre crying just as much as him tho
Nah, Iām just being reasonable
How are you being reasonable? He is passionate. Not everyone is oke in life just existing. Some people actually enjoy things when they win.Ā
So heās the only player who is passionate about football? Congrats to portugal, slightly heartbreaking for sloveniaĀ
Not mad at Portugal winning Iām mad at Ronaldo āredemptionā what fucking redemption he nearly cost Portugal the game. Looking all smug after the penalties he should just be relieved
Tbf I think that's just his face.
He literally apologised to the fans after scoring. Seethe and cope
Bro, the only person seething and coping is Ronaldo himself. He almost couldnāt cope after the first pen.
Can't hear you amongst the celebrations
120 minutes against Slovenia, especially considering the fact that Sesko shouldāve made it 1-0, is cause for celebration? I would think itās more a combination of embarrassment and relief.
But Sesko didn't make it, right? How about considering the fact that all of Portugal shots were goals?
Are you really saying that Slovenia is a bad team after being humiliated by switzerland?
Switzerland are much, much stronger, and Portugal are also much stronger than that Italian side.
Couldn't have said it better. Imagine getting steamrolled out of the tournament and trying to diminish another team's victory. Pathetic.
With the amount of talent in that Portugal teamā¦ This is why youāll forever be a small nation.
You wouldn't be trolling this Reddit if you thought Portugal is small. Your actions betray you. I've wasted too much time with a loser. Ciao
Crazy your celebrating that so proudly
He was smiling because he was relieved lmao.

Love me an F1 nap.
Iām too busy screaming at the tv to sleep when England plays
Completely understandable. Supporting the pub business!
Man, the stories football writes
That's why I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE this game!
Costa in tears giving an interview and talking about the great moments this sport creates - amazing. Also gg to Slovenia.
I'm so happy! I hope everyone had fun! GG Slovenia bros
The match was pretty fun. Even if there were no goals, both teams played the game and didn't sleep on the ball.
Yes, I agree, I really enjoyed it
Messi needed Martinez. Ronaldo needed Costa.

Saiyng he fucked up the in game pentalty is an insult to oblok
Agreed. That was a hell of a save.
He did, it was not in the top or bottom corner, no power behind the shot, no movement to wrong foot the goalkeeper. Player of his qualityā¦ā¦
Yes that's real champion fabric
And his first penalty wasnt even that bad, good goalkeeping from oblak just messed it up lol
Feel compassion for oblak.
Dwight Yorke was better than RonaldoĀ

Can we not make this about CR7 and appreciate Slovenia and Portugal goalkeepers..
instructions unclear, writing another comment about "pristiano penaldo"
Portugal have got a new hero now.
HE LEARNED FROM RUI AND RICARDO
Yup
Their keeper was a god damn machine
Great matchplan by Slovenia. Defend a 0-0 until penalties, just to realize none of your players are any good at penalties. True master strategists.
Yeah Sesko should have scored.... But as a RB Salzburg fan, we know he misses too often. Great talent but no consistency yet. Unfortunately. Slovenia could have advanced today. Sadly Portugal advances now.
That was what I thought as well, that Portugal would definitely win if it comes to penalties.

shut up
This game is actually one of the games of the tournament.
Glad i watched the whole thing, sheer madness
Super sayian Diogo costa
Do people really enjoy the underdog story so much? I can't imagine anyone actually loving the way Slovenia played. Most of their players spent 120 minutes keeping the goalkeeper company...
Yes, because it's boring seeing the same teams go again in the finals. This tournament put some light on the underdogs but now most of them are going out 1 by 1. Would have been nice to see a final with the underdogs. But... Oh well.
Honestly, not a big fan of football in general, but the way they played for breakthrough was pretty tense
Well a great deal of us come from small countries so underdog stories is normal too us. And rooting for the big rich countries kind of sucks. They go into the tournaments with all the advantages so F them.
Except Portugal isn't rich. It's actually very poor.
I just responded to someone else who said that.
Fair enough but Portugal is neither big or rich
They are football wise
ikr
Plus when 5 defenders had to defend 1 person ā which is why they got a penalty
Did you even watch the game? Every time they had the chance they attacked
People just hated Ronaldo, Messi, and any big star
Canāt take that away from Costa, annoying as hell like Ronaldo did anything there.

Ronaldo is a true team player. He sucked all game just to put Costa in the spotlight. Amazing!
Heh. Canāt argue with that one man lmao
Costa is carrying portugal
Diogo Costa - the GOD!! Slovenia - congratulations for giving every team a hard time Ronaldo, Bruno, Silva - learn from todayās game!
I guess it's not just Pepe that has to suck Costa's anymore.
Amazing game.
Great matchplan by Slovenia. Defend a 0-0 until penalties, just to realize none of your players are any good at penalties. True master strategists.
