Yup, I would go comically formal from here on. "Mr. Lastname has made it clear that he wants to keep our interactions strictly professional so I'm doing my best to live up to that."
In all seriousness, I'd forward this to HR in case he later says something about it intending to make YOU seem like you're out of line.
EDIT: OK, clearly people prefer staying off the HR map, but I'd definitely keep this around for if it becomes an issue later... at minimum.
I really hope that people in the office as well as the police would be able to put 2 and 2 together without a paper trail.
"So you're saying Bill came in wearing a coat made out of human skin?" "Correct" "And around the same time, you have a coworker who went missing, who has the same skin tone?" "Yea, that sounds about right" "hmm...yes...but what does it mean?"
omg I've done this. I was talking to this guy over text and said something like righto in an e-mail. Guy took it the complete wrong way and got super condescending. I was leaving the job anyway and this was on one of my last days but I wound up having to deal with him again at my new job. As he was leaving the office and getting into the elevator he made a remark, nothing rude, but as the door was closing I said righto!
I giggled all the way back to my office.
Some people get set off by the weirdest things. I once had a coworker ask me "Can I ask for a favor?" And I responded, "You sure can!" I was smiling and not at all being an ass about it. I was waiting for him to ask the favor, and he just went, "Oh, fine then. Never mind!" I still don't know what his problem was. This was almost 20 years ago and I'm still trying to figure it out.
During Covid, after my local pub had shut down for a couple of months then reopened, I was sitting at a table on the patio with a bunch of the other regulars. One of them, who I didn't really like very much, was leaving, and trying to be pleasant and thinking, "the bar got a reset maybe we can reset the animosity between us as well," I said to him, "have a good night man, good to see you again!" And the rest of the table stared at me and one of then said, "that was really mean. You didn't need to say that." I don't get it.
>that was really mean. You didn't need to say that."
Fucking what? I would ask them what exactly they thought you said because it sure as shit wasn't what you actually said!!!
But I'm extremely blunt/direct, so when someone has a strange reaction to something I say, I'm gonna ask directly for an explanation to clear it up in the moment, which has led to people lecturing me for being too straightforward and for not trying to pretend to be someone I'm not for "social norms/politeness", so I'm maybe not the best read on this one, either.
Man I’d be stuck smiling with “oh my gosh my child thinks I’m a good friend and their parent!” The way I hold onto my 8 year old brother saying I’m the funniest guy he knows. When he knew like 5 people it didn’t mean much but now I’m up against YouTubers and his school friends
If she hates it mix it up with old-timey / white-ass expressions.
Daughter: _bruh_
Parent: _bruh. Not en fleek_
Daughter: _oh my god_
Parent: _What's good for the goose is good for the gander_
And you can always remind her you started it.
That's not always enough to deter people. I had my fair share of "he doesn't need to know" *wink*
Some people really don't care at all about your relationship status.
I'm guessing that based on your initial text to him, this is someone you get along with and are friendly with and he likely has misconstrued that to mean you are interested in him. Calling him "bro" caused him to panic a bit as it made it clear that you view your relationship as strictly platonic.
The fact that you're in a relationship means nothing to men who are into you.
There was a video on the front page yesterday that explained this well.
Cashiers at Safeway are instructed that when a customer uses their credit card, they look at the name on the card and say “Thank you Mr./Mrs. Lastname for shopping at Safeway” when handing the card back.
When male cashiers said this to male customers, no problem.
When male cashiers said this to female customers, no problem.
When female cashiers said this to female customers, no problem.
When female cashiers said this to male customers, the men would follow the cashier out to their car, stalk and harass them.
There are men in this world who have zero women in their lives other than female relatives. They have absolutely no idea how to talk to women. And every other woman they find attractive has ignored them because they haven’t been forced to interact with him based on being coworkers. So when a woman they find attractive and see on a daily basis gives them any positive attention they spiral.
He likely thinks he has a chance the second you’re single again and has just been waiting and waiting. And now, by calling him bro, you’ve unknowingly communicated that even if you were single you don’t see him as a romantic option.
I would keep this man at a distance and avoid pleasantries.
I’m being goofy in this thread because it’s reddit but this comment is really important. You never know what’s going on in someone’s head. Never underestimate men like this it can unfortunately have seriousness consequences. It’s alarming how just being polite often times as an appeasement gesture for safety can be misconstrued as interest.
As you said him realizing she doesn’t see him as a romantic interest felt like rejection so he lashed out.
The only logical conclusion is that he was literally masturbating to incest porn when the text came in. His post-nut clarity is going to have him sweating over how he basically just installed a neon sign that says "I can only get off to my own sister."
See, this is exactly where my head went. They basically outed their feelings for OP and made it an "into" issue, even doubled down and repeated it at the end.
Judging by her other posts OP is definitely a woman. He for sure is really into her and got bothered by getting friendzoned with the bro call. But also he is 100 percent into incest.
Hey fuck you I’m not into bunches of things! I’m a one-bunch man. Why do you keep going on about bunches? I’m not into bunches. Who said that? I’ll kick their asses!
(Not into bunches)
This was my second thought as well. My first thought was why he thought he meant brother/sister stuff has he never heard anyone call a mate bro?
That guy is 100% thinking about brother/sister stuff 24/7
That's what I wondered. It kind of read like "I've been thinking you're hot for a while now. But then you called me 'bro' and it made me uncomfortable because I want to date you."
I don't know. there are things that cause people to be triggered.
Ie. I once sent a teams message to a guy at work, starting with "Dude" and I HR came to talk to me about hoe effective communication is all about expecting how the other will receive the message.
I remember being in middle school, my friend's and I used to greet each other saying "Hey holmes/homie" all the time. Had a kid I didn't really know in a class overhear and go off about it being racist language and as bad as the n-word and they went and told the teacher. Nothing came of it, but it really caught me off guard. For the record, I'm white, and I have no idea which race it's supposed to be racist in regards to, we just grew up hearing it and started using it, ourselves.
Yeah, his goofy ass is (hopefully not) being incredibly weird because he's attracted to OP. That random bit about not "being into brother/sister stuff" after being called bro was pretty odd.
It's insane that he even assumes a brother-sister relationship means sex, as if thats the default, much less that all it took was "bro" for him to think a coworker wants to role play and fuck.
"Dude, can you send me the schedule?"
"Stop asking me for cowboy themed sex, it's inappropriate."
“Bro”
“This is ruining my fantasy”
“What?”
“I’m not into step bro stuff”
“WHAT???”
“Listen I’m serious about my work so if you wanna split me open like a Yule log lemme know.”
Honestly I get the slip of the tongue. Being from California I call people dude without notice until someone points it out and I have this brain freeze where im like, yes dude is a casual all gendered remark about a person. Is it not?? Usually after someone says they dont like it I just make a mental note to pay more attention to my rambling to them.
The fact that they took it to incest porn is a worrying take that would make me instantly never want to be around this person.
People don’t understand that in California, “dude” is a noun, verb, and an adjective. He’s a dude, she’s a dude, that inanimate object is a dude, my cat is a dude, everything is a dude.
Dude is the only word in the English language where an entire conversation can take place by using only a single word. Dude! Dude? Dude. DUDE!! Duude...
I say mate a lot and said "alright mate" to a driver when I was about to check his load as he was leaving my site.
He told me he's not my mate so I apologised and agreed we aren't mates, it's just something we say.
He got arsey and it was awkward but for the life of me I couldn't stop saying it.. it just kept slipping out and he was getting more annoyed each time..
I must have said it 5-6 times in our brief interaction and I had to sit down for 10 after he left 😂
I read this as OP is a woman and the co-worker is a man that is into her who THOUGHT she was too so when she texted bro he was like WOAH we’ve been flirting (in his mind only I’m sure) but THAT is too far. I get “alpha bro” energy from the “let me guide you” line. And OP is just so not in that mindset she didn’t get where he was coming from.
Yeah I first didn’t realize OP was a woman but now I get it more - the dude is absolutely into OP and reacting negatively (and weirdly) to being bro zoned /friend zoned.
That person is 100% blowing things out of proportions and is being extremely defensive out of nowhere.
All it’s missing is some “I also don’t have any of this brother-sister stuff on my computer, no need to check.”
I called someone “dawg” on Reddit once and they said I was using “my people’s slang” and “derogatory terms”. Then they said it was a slur. He was insinuating that I was black and was being overtly racist to him by calling him “dawg”
I’m a skinny white kid. The internet is fucking weird dawg
If this happened in any workplace I've worked in, all the way from informal kitchens to formal offices, this would be spread around the workplace and this guy is going to be called 'bro' by everyone and there'll be a fair amount of incest jokes too.
Acting like this in the UK is social suicide.
In college, back in the 90s my friends and I were in a phase where we called everyone "chief" rather innocently. Was taking an essay exam and it was time to hand the test back in my row and couldn't get the attention of the guy behind me and just said cheeringly "Here you go chief."
Dude shot me the glare from hell and took the papers. Then, when they were handing back graded exams a week later "Jake Three-Brown-Bears" is called out and I think "Ooh what a cool name" and who gets up to pick up his test but the very same gentleman I'd innocently called "chief". Suddenly it all made sense, I felt like a gigantic idiot and never called anyone "chief" again.

Address them in the most formal way possible. But…. Brother sister stuff?……dafuq
![gif](giphy|ukGm72ZLZvYfS)
Yup, I would go comically formal from here on. "Mr. Lastname has made it clear that he wants to keep our interactions strictly professional so I'm doing my best to live up to that."
Yes, make it extra awkward by switching back and forth between normal speech and corpolingo when talking in a group with this guy present.
he seems fun
In all seriousness, I'd forward this to HR in case he later says something about it intending to make YOU seem like you're out of line. EDIT: OK, clearly people prefer staying off the HR map, but I'd definitely keep this around for if it becomes an issue later... at minimum.
Forward it to HR to create a paper trail for if you disappear and he shows up to work wearing a human skin coat
But she did call him bro officer
I wouldn't. It's never a good idea to get HR prematurely involved. Just get a screenshot, and print it, if the chat can't be reliably archived by you.
Op went full blown and posted it haha now he has thousands of bro and sis witnesses
No normal person would hear “bro” and think “this is sexual”.
Seriously. I hate it when my compatriot calls me 'bro' in the middle of a bro-job and I have to be like "c'mon man, let's keep this professional."

Papì, no mas!
Call him sis

I would have ignored the sensitivity and just said "soooo you got the schedule or not?"
And end it with thanks bro
Perfect

How could you be offended by "righto"?
honestly I don't know, it's something I say all the time and not in a rude manner.
Puritan types don't like slang. My ex inlaws didn't even like contractions.
I suppose giving birth was extra rough, then?
Reddit let me give someone gold, please I beg of you

Or thanks dude.
"Cheers, mate."
Cheers fam
Love you, Cuz.
I'm stuck on the reply from the co-worker of "you better" like a passive aggressive threat. Like chill out.
Yeah that's a lot more impolite than calling someone "bro".
Yeah I don’t get being overly polite in situations like this.
My 8-yr old called me Bro. I asked him why and he said that's what he calls all his good friends... can't argue or get offended by that can you.
Don't worry, somewhere at some point in time and space he still thinks your the funniest guy.
Idk man, my 11 year old daughter calls me "bruh" one more time and I'll snap
She’ll grow out of it. Wait till she thinks you’re Mr Money-bags…
Oh I know, I don't like it but I was kidding about the "going to snap" part. Hell, it's my fault for letting her watch YouTube lol
Have you tried using ”bruh” excessively back at her? If she’s reached the embarresed-by-parents stage that should get her to drop it pretty quick.
Haha might have to try that
If she hates it mix it up with old-timey / white-ass expressions. Daughter: _bruh_ Parent: _bruh. Not en fleek_ Daughter: _oh my god_ Parent: _What's good for the goose is good for the gander_ And you can always remind her you started it.
Um.... my 23 year old daughter still does it. Not sure they grow out of it. It becomes part of their vernacular.
He fancies you and is worried you’ve just bro-zoned him.
He knows I'm in a relationship
The whole brother-sister non-sequiter only makes sense if he delusionally thinks there is a possibility of a sexual relationship.
And is thinking of it often.
That probably only makes it worse. He’s waiting and wants to make sure you’re not ruling him out for potential future relations.
Yeah, he's playing it real fucking cool.
He probably thinks he is actually doing that, unfortunatly
"Whew, good thing I nipped that in the bud. She doesn't suspect a thing..."
While sweating bullets. SRS BIZNISS ONLY!!!
Yes, he’s definitely acting in a way that would attract her if she ever split from her boyfriend. 🤣
That's not always enough to deter people. I had my fair share of "he doesn't need to know" *wink* Some people really don't care at all about your relationship status.
yea... somehow i dont think thats gona stop him from fancying you. common sense couldnt stop him from acting like an ass before why would it work now?
He apparently does not care
Because that’s stopped every man from thinking they have a chance in the past.
Yeah we are co-workers. And before this we have been pretty cordial like everyone else. Nothing more, nothing less. So this was a shocker.

they wait, it doesnt matter ToT
That's a dude that is absolutely into brother-sister stuff
Like dude where is your head at if I say 'bro' and you think incest.
The only logical conclusion is that he was literally masturbating to incest porn when the text came in. His post-nut clarity is going to have him sweating over how he basically just installed a neon sign that says "I can only get off to my own sister."
Or OP is a woman, and dude is hella into her. Which would be equally concerning.
See, this is exactly where my head went. They basically outed their feelings for OP and made it an "into" issue, even doubled down and repeated it at the end.
Everyone here is fixated on the fact he's probably into incest. But it screamed to me that he wants OP badly.
[удалено]
Judging by her other posts OP is definitely a woman. He for sure is really into her and got bothered by getting friendzoned with the bro call. But also he is 100 percent into incest.
That was how I read it too
'Fine. Can you send me the schedule, step-bro?'
What are you doing, step-coworker
100%. People who get that defensive over something so easily are usually guilty.
“Of course I’m homophobic. It’s disgusting that men turn me on!”
I am 1000% stealing this
#there is no faster way to make people think you’re into brothe-sister stuff than to write a text about it

Are there any unorganized religions?
Most of them, but they like to pretend otherwise.
No faster way for people to think you're into brother-sister stuff thank mentioning it a bunch.
Hey fuck you I’m not into bunches of things! I’m a one-bunch man. Why do you keep going on about bunches? I’m not into bunches. Who said that? I’ll kick their asses! (Not into bunches)
"Yeah so anyway, that bunch of bananas had it coming"
*inserts* banana for scale.
His mind immediately took "bro" and ran it to "What are you doing step bro?" And porn. Dude is absolutely into it.
He kept bringing it up afterall!
Yeah, this was also my conclusion, why are they so bitchy over three letters lmao like why mention “I’m not into that stuff”?? What a weirdo Lmfaooo
Yeah they absolutely called themselves out as a total freak show like how awkward can one be? I DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT YOU WHEN I JERK OFF!!! Uh, whut?
This was my second thought as well. My first thought was why he thought he meant brother/sister stuff has he never heard anyone call a mate bro? That guy is 100% thinking about brother/sister stuff 24/7
He's also saying "I want a date"
That's what I wondered. It kind of read like "I've been thinking you're hot for a while now. But then you called me 'bro' and it made me uncomfortable because I want to date you."

Pretty sure this is Latino slang derives from homie. Just means friend. Not even bad.
His response is completely inappropriate. It went from bro to incest fetish in 0 seconds flat.
I also missed where OP brought up sex stuff. Broworker is weird
I don't think he knows what a floozy is Or maybe he does, which adds a whole new and interesting layer to this scenario
Yeah, his goofy ass is (hopefully not) being incredibly weird because he's attracted to OP. That random bit about not "being into brother/sister stuff" after being called bro was pretty odd.
Me thinks he doth protest too much
It's insane that he even assumes a brother-sister relationship means sex, as if thats the default, much less that all it took was "bro" for him to think a coworker wants to role play and fuck. "Dude, can you send me the schedule?" "Stop asking me for cowboy themed sex, it's inappropriate."
Not into brother-sister stuff. He prefers to be Daddy
Father, may I ask that you share the work schedue with me sexually?
LMAO
"I was asking for surfer themed sex, but okay..."
Escalated so quickly 🤣🤣🤣
Yep. Bro is definitely into brother- sister stuff
He's into having sex with her. But doesn't want his co-working relationship to be weird
Was my reaction too lol. Also, you could argue that the aggressive nature of the replies are not professional at all.
I too am serious about my work. Not a floozy. ![gif](giphy|iNg9XvTGBI83S)

Imagine having so little control over your emotions you have to lash out like this at some basic colloquialism

"I cant masturbate to you calling me brother... or can I?"
He could. -Ron Howard
"Let me guide you" Sooo like a brother/sister would? Pick a hill, dude.
Exactly. It put me in the mind of someone who publicly refers to their partner as “my lover.”
Oh this bro watches alllll the incest-porn
That's what I think also. Too much incest porn
No absolutely not, no brother-sister stuff, he's serious about his private activities, not some floozy who watches brother-sister stuff.
I'm reading this as Dennis from Always Sunny.
Yeah. It's strange he kept saying he's not into it. Most people move past the pleasantries.
Yeah lmao way too hard of an emphasis on it
Honestly I get the slip of the tongue. I’m a dude, he’s a dude and she’s a dude. We’re all dudes. Except for that dude, that dude is an ass.
I hate being called bro too but I never thought of it as a "brother-sister"/floozy thing, that's weird
Why bro?
Maybe he prefers cuz
I said forget about it cuh
Damn broddie
Bro is maybe a litlle bit casual. Also your coworker is a porn addict.
I would respond with only bro... "Sorry bro, I didn't know you weren't into that bro-sister stuff"
Send him a pamphlet on dealing with sibling attraction.
ok sweet home Alabama had me rolling!
What an absolute psycho lmao

I read this as OP is a woman and the co-worker is a man that is into her who THOUGHT she was too so when she texted bro he was like WOAH we’ve been flirting (in his mind only I’m sure) but THAT is too far. I get “alpha bro” energy from the “let me guide you” line. And OP is just so not in that mindset she didn’t get where he was coming from.
Yeah I first didn’t realize OP was a woman but now I get it more - the dude is absolutely into OP and reacting negatively (and weirdly) to being bro zoned /friend zoned.
Yea I could tell when he weirdly brought up being a floozy. I read it as "I am not a floozy (like you)"
I can’t get over someone having brown as their main color for the screen.
"Holy christ, princess, it's just a general greeting. Do you have the fucking schedule or not?"
Hit em with a “daddy chill”
Some people are ultra-sensitive and it's like walking on eggshells when dealing with them. 😒
Floozy
You should've called him "cuz" afterwards
Projection at its finest.
That person is 100% blowing things out of proportions and is being extremely defensive out of nowhere. All it’s missing is some “I also don’t have any of this brother-sister stuff on my computer, no need to check.”
What a fucking weirdo
After that last message I would literally never call them anything other than bro again.
I called someone “dawg” on Reddit once and they said I was using “my people’s slang” and “derogatory terms”. Then they said it was a slur. He was insinuating that I was black and was being overtly racist to him by calling him “dawg” I’m a skinny white kid. The internet is fucking weird dawg
Brooooo just get me the schedule already
If this happened in any workplace I've worked in, all the way from informal kitchens to formal offices, this would be spread around the workplace and this guy is going to be called 'bro' by everyone and there'll be a fair amount of incest jokes too. Acting like this in the UK is social suicide.
This guy seems like a peach to work with. Gotta love people who take themselves to serious.
“Let me guide you” brings instant hatred from me.
In college, back in the 90s my friends and I were in a phase where we called everyone "chief" rather innocently. Was taking an essay exam and it was time to hand the test back in my row and couldn't get the attention of the guy behind me and just said cheeringly "Here you go chief." Dude shot me the glare from hell and took the papers.
Call him goober next time see how he reacts
What type of work are you in?
Certainly not brother-sister stuff.
