I did the exact same thing for months before one of my friends stopped me and said “you know it’s pronounced “deadmouse” right? And I’m like “what the fuck I’ve been saying that for months!” And he says “yeah we didn’t have the heart to correct you.”
So I made a shirt that says It’s Pronounced “dead mow five” and I wear it to all his shows. Joel even signed it for me at a pop up in Denver :D
I straight up refuse to name artists with numbers or "replacement letters" in their names correctly because I think it's dumb. Hence I still refer to deadmau5 as deadmau-5 and PVRIS as pvris.
For the longest time I thought "Deafheaven" was "Deaf-*haven*".
Always pronounced Jesu like "yes-oo" instead of "yay-zoo"
Also turns out you don't pronounce Björk like "Byork", you pronounce it "Byerk".
My mom also says Anna von Hausswolff as "Anna von Awesomevoice"
If you know what a french “eu” sounds like that would be an even better equivalent (i think).
Although as a swede i’ve obviously never struggled with it I always find it amusing hearing foreigners try instead of going with the cop out “byork” :)
Woah, just looked up the IPA for Byörk [pjœr̥k]. If it helps, the ö is like an [ɛ] or “eh”, (e)very but with rounded lips (u, o, w). Also love the voiceless alveolar trill, but I don’t know if I’ve ever heard somebody pronounce her name with it.
You should give "Vespertine" or "Homogenic" a try if you're into art/experimental pop at all, or just cause they're classics. Or also don't, god knows how many classics I haven't listened to yet.
They’re both in my Apple Music library, I have a lot of music I want to listen to. I feel the same as you dude. I’m gonna listen to them eventually, you said experimental pop what kinda vibes tho??
Well Björk's vocals are a good place to start. Due to her Icelandic accent the vocals sound almost alien. For Vespertine she has the likes of Matmos making microhouse to back her vocals, it's very surreal and beautiful. Not sure who did production for "Homogenic", but it has a heavy electronic instrumental sound throughout the album. Just hearing these cold genres mix with Björk's beautiful voice is why these albums are so amazing. Listen to Joga and Pagan Poetry and you'll see what I mean. Probably my favourites off those albums.
Also as well, having just “Black” as a stage name is honestly one of the worst I’ve ever heard, “six-lack” at least sounds somewhat unique if still dumb.
It’s a cool stage name to *read* but pronunciation wise it just falls flat. Not a great idea to have a name that can be said 3 different ways depending on what people feel like calling you lol
two phases of initial introduction to bon iver: learning it’s a band name and not a persons name (there is at least one person in this thread that skipped this step), learning how to pronounce it.
His name is a deliberate misspelling of Bon Hiver which is French for "good winter". The 'H' is silent.
You say Bon the way you would bon appetit or bon voyage ("bonn") but when you put the two words together it sounds like "bone e-vare" or "boney vare"
Ohh I hadn’t thought about it in that context .
The fact that idk bon iver is good winter and I once listened to for Emma forever ago 30-35 times on loop is a lil weird but thanks mate
Destin Choice Route (born October 31, 1990), known professionally as JID (also stylized J.I.D)
Both are right but yeah might as well just said jid like “jittery”
If you mean Day N Night, I only heard it through the video clip for a long long time, never the original audio (although he says it very vaguely there lol).
For years, I thought Kid Cudi was pronounced like "Kid Cue-dee" and I still catch myself saying it like that sometimes. I remember one time, I met this girl who was saying it the correct way and I kept saying "uh I think you're saying it wrong, I'm pretty sure it's Cue-dee". 😭
The members of Sleater-Kinney pronounce it like "slayter-kinny", but I still end up saying "sleeter-kinny" most of the time. And on rare occasion, I sometimes even accidentally say "sleeter-kenny"
Toro y moi. I thought he was mixing Spanish with French.
Edit: [apparently he is saying that and I wasn’t wrong!](https://youtu.be/L4lngMrr5FY?si=3f8a9XCtFXvWorQw)
Yeah for some reason I thought someone said it was pronounced toro “ee moy” but I looked it up and according to this vid [I had it right all along!](https://youtu.be/L4lngMrr5FY?si=3f8a9XCtFXvWorQw)
Fun fact. I took three years of high school German specifically because of Rammstein. Started out as a “this sounds cool, what are they saying.” then turned out I actually enjoy the language in general.
I used to call it "Unwoohned" thinking that it was some sort of smart wordplay on reversing a wound or something 😭. But no it's just the regular ass word.
My confession is that I thought Sufjan Stevens was some kind of homage to Cat Stevens and that it wasn't his real name. I'm also not 100% sure on pronunciation. I assume it's like Soof-yan with a soft J.
I said Dido like ditto lol
Also I said toro y moi like toro y Moy. It's a mix of French and Spanish but I was pronouncing the I as one does in Spanish ahahaha
I always pronounced it "Shapel" like Dave Chappelle's last name. Imagine my surprise when she came out at Coachella and said "my name is Chappell Roan" and pronounced Chappell like "chapel". Personally, I prefer the "Shapel" pronunciation because "chapel" has too much religious connotation.
for some reason, I must’ve heard someone else say it aloud, but I thought it was “zen”-tacion, like sensation but zen? no idea why, but “XXX ten tay see on” is a fuckin dumb name too, so whatever.

I went through a year of calling deadmau5 "dead mow five" during his peak
To be fair, he does pronounce it in a few different ways to screw with people
deadmau5 is like peak 2009 internet spork random, for better or worse. Kind of endearing cause he seems like a good dude, just a time capsule.
i pronounced 6ix 9ine six ix nine ine
wait…. that’s not how you say that?
Noooo, it’s dead mouse
I did the exact same thing for months before one of my friends stopped me and said “you know it’s pronounced “deadmouse” right? Yeah Ö is not the same as O. Ö sounds like the "eu" part of odeur.
I love that you chose odeur instead of bird or sth more obvious
Hahah yeah that's true, I was having a shit while writing the comment so that might explain my thought process.
If you know what a french “eu” sounds like that would be an even better equivalent (i think). Although as a swede i’ve obviously never struggled with it I always find it amusing hearing foreigners try instead of going with the cop out “byork” :)
Happycakedy

Wow are you me
Literally ALL those artists named, I was gonna name too!
Anna von hausswolff truly does have an awesome voice, wish more people knew about her
There's a lot of people who pronounce Björk wrong
I was one of them, but yes it's pronounced "Byerk"
I pronounce it “be-York”
Then you are pronouncing it wrong. But I also don't care and I doubt Björk does either.
I dokt even listen to them so Idc rlly
You should give "Vespertine" or "Homogenic" a try if you're into art/experimental pop at all, or just cause they're classics. Or also don't, god knows how many classics I haven't listened to yet.

Bee-jyehrrrrrk
Man…I’m fucking 35 years old and have never once heard this. Thanks.
Always knew that it was Bgork. Thanks
Bajonk
It's a basic answer but 6lack. Can't believe I was calling him six lack for a year
I refuse to call him 'Black.' You pick a stage name that stupid you live with the consequences.
Also as well, having just “Black” as a stage name is honestly one of the worst I’ve ever heard, “six-lack” at least sounds somewhat unique if still dumb.
6lack sounds like a username
His real name is Ricardo Valentine and he’s an R&B singer! I don’t know why he even wants to use a stage name
His real name sounds so much better!
To be fair there was logic behind it, if your name is just “black” how the hell do you show up on search engines
I mean yeah, but that in itself kinda suggests that you should pick a different name
i call him "slack" i'll be honest
Is it not 6 Black? Damn.
nah just black
that's kinda stupid
Idc how it’s pronounced he’s 6 lack for life
Lol I'm never not calling Six Lack
It’s a cool stage name to *read* but pronunciation wise it just falls flat. Not a great idea to have a name that can be said 3 different ways depending on what people feel like calling you lol
Shit like this is why when I refer to the artist Blxst i say it like bluckst instead of just blast
This one is unfortunate because 6-lack is a way better stage name than black
Bladee, i used to pronounce it like bladey
i’m bladee she call me bladey
Angel or demon maybe
I still do and refuse to pronounce it “blade”
Lol I used to pronounce it like Bla-dee
[i say blade but you can say bladey 2](https://youtu.be/vZXGxCtXfp4?si=_ZArsL1ohW_N84OF)
I thought it was pronounced blah-day like sade
Bon Iver was my first major whiff
I used to pronounce it Bon Eye-ver
I think we all did lol
🙈 wait…. Tell me how Iver is pronounced please
It’s pronounced like “Bone Eevair”
Happened to us all comrade.
two phases of initial introduction to bon iver: learning it’s a band name and not a persons name (there is at least one person in this thread that skipped this step), learning how to pronounce it.
Isn’t Bon pronounced like pawn and iver like revere
His name is a deliberate misspelling of Bon Hiver which is French for "good winter". The 'H' is silent. You say Bon the way you would bon appetit or bon voyage ("bonn") but when you put the two words together it sounds like "bone e-vare" or "boney vare"
Ohh I hadn’t thought about it in that context . The fact that idk bon iver is good winter and I once listened to for Emma forever ago 30-35 times on loop is a lil weird but thanks mate
I think it's kind of like bone eever (ver as in very)
I refuse to pronounce his name any other way than "Bawn Eyevur"
Laufey I still don't have it correct even after hearing hundreds of others say it 😭
Lay vey
I always thought it was LAU-faye (like Faye Webster), but honestly I'm not sure if I'm going too hard with it and it's just LAU-fee
funnily enough its neither
Loy-Vay
Coc-Too Twins
JID. Saying “jid” sounds a lot more normal to me now, but I used to pronounce it as J.I.D (pronouncing all the letters)
Destin Choice Route (born October 31, 1990), known professionally as JID (also stylized J.I.D) Both are right but yeah might as well just said jid like “jittery”
Tbh it works either way
MØ, I don't want to pronounce her name "moo". Turns out, the correct way to pronounce is "moo" with a Australian accent.
Meau
I have finally confirmed that it is “hose-ear” after countless people talked me into “hojir”
I say hose-ier, like a 6 foot hose is a hose, but a 12 foot hose is hosier
"Hozier" takes the complete mystique out of his name lol. Sounds like Frasier. The correct pronunciation is so much cooler
Kid Cudi (Kid Coodi, because there's literally one D). RZA & SZA (I used to spell them). Also, Tove Lo is apparently "Too Vee Luu"in Swedish.
Doesn’t Cudi’s biggest hit end with him saying his name? How could you mess it up?
If you mean Day N Night, I only heard it through the video clip for a long long time, never the original audio (although he says it very vaguely there lol).
Wait it’s not Kid Coodi???
it's kid cuddy
Kid cutie
Also GZA
For years, I thought Kid Cudi was pronounced like "Kid Cue-dee" and I still catch myself saying it like that sometimes. I remember one time, I met this girl who was saying it the correct way and I kept saying "uh I think you're saying it wrong, I'm pretty sure it's Cue-dee". 😭
That Cudi one is just egregious 😭
Sade
The members of Sleater-Kinney pronounce it like "slayter-kinny", but I still end up saying "sleeter-kinny" most of the time. And on rare occasion, I sometimes even accidentally say "sleeter-kenny"
I always thought Fugazi was “Foo-gay-zee” not “Foo-Gah-Zee”
Weyes Blood pronounced like ways blood De La Soul pronounced French like duh la soul Aaliyah pronounced with the a twice, like ah-ahliyah
Weyes blood would be wise blood right?
You done messed up, A-Aliyah!
[удалено]
I know exactly what you're saying lol C'haim
I know it's HIGH-im but I also just say HIGHm just cause it's easier
I still don't know if you're supposed to spell out N.E.R.D or just say "nerd"
Toro y moi. I thought he was mixing Spanish with French. Edit: [apparently he is saying that and I wasn’t wrong!](https://youtu.be/L4lngMrr5FY?si=3f8a9XCtFXvWorQw)
he is
Yeah for some reason I thought someone said it was pronounced toro “ee moy” but I looked it up and according to this vid [I had it right all along!](https://youtu.be/L4lngMrr5FY?si=3f8a9XCtFXvWorQw)
Wait what is it then?
Toro ee mwah
So, mixing Spanish and French
Yeah
Hello shirt brother
Pink tribe!!!
I thought he was japanese
I was pronounce Sade like s-aid for way too long
I still don't know if Rammstein is pronounced ramm-stein or ramm-shtein
latter is how Germans say it
Fun fact. I took three years of high school German specifically because of Rammstein. Started out as a “this sounds cool, what are they saying.” then turned out I actually enjoy the language in general.
I was the only person who enjoyed learning German at my high school. Good to find another.
It's the latter. In songs like "Rammstein" and "Rammlied" Till pronounces it as such.
Ghislane maxwell
I got the piss ripped out of me cos I pronounced it jizz-lane for a while
Alvvays. Pronounced it Alvays
Sleater kinney, used to always say sleeter.
i still call 6lack six-lack
Sufjan Stevens, Michael Gira, Les Rallizes Denudes, Unwound
Unwound? How else do you say it
I used to call it "Unwoohned" thinking that it was some sort of smart wordplay on reversing a wound or something 😭. But no it's just the regular ass word.
Hahha I love it! I got owned by a teenager wearing a Laufey shirt last week. Me “cool Loffy shirt” them “you mean Lah-fey?!”
That's fucking hilarious, Lah-fey is so cursed.
Michael gira? How?
i think it’s pronounced ji-RAH
I've heard different people pronounce it JY-ra or JEE-ra, so probably just that. Kind of like the old Ian ma-KAY Ian ma-KYE thing
Neu
My confession is that I thought Sufjan Stevens was some kind of homage to Cat Stevens and that it wasn't his real name. I'm also not 100% sure on pronunciation. I assume it's like Soof-yan with a soft J.
wait like just cause his last name is the same?
yeah it's dumb
Yngwie Malmsteen (pronounced ing-vay)
Songs: Ohia. I thought it was like Ohio but with an A. But it's Oh-hee-ah.

Tchaikovsky! Used to pronounce it TeaCoffeeSky
I need to go back and listen to them but I’ll always pronounce them as Deft Ones
Rihanna, Sunn O)))
You called Rihanna Sunn O)))?
What can I say, I get confused sometimes
Merzbow. I will still slip in and pronounce the "bow" as in Oboe, but apparently it's "bow" as in "ouch"
oooooh shit it is? i’ve been saying murs-bow (like bow & arrow, tie a bow) rather than bow (take a bow, bow part of a ship) Pulse Demon slaps tho
Thought Tom Delonge was pronounced Deloanj I found out through this post that it’s not “Deaf-haven”
Moderat is mode-rat and not modder-at 😕 Netsky is net-sky and not net-ski 😭
Simon and Garfunkel. Used to put the emphasis on garFunkel.
used to pronounce xxxtentacion like (xxx-tent-aysh-un)
Not a U2 fan, so I was surprised to find out that Bono is pronounced “bawn o” and not “bone o”. I also still have no idea how to say Kali Uchis’ name.
XXXTentacion was Extension for me
I don’t really listen to him but I pronounce lemon demon like demon rhymes with lemon
so you say lemmon demmon? honestly leemon deemon sounds pretty funny
I didn't learn paramore was pronounced paramore and not puhrahmuhray until like 2 months afo
Puhraymuray?? 😭
i still dont know how to say ¥$
Yen Dollar or Ye-n-Dolla
I just say "why-ess", lol
Xiu Xiu
Mgła
How did you pronounce it?
I kept saying Polyphia as poly-phee-a instead of polyph-ia.
U2.
The Number Twelve Looks Like You World's End Girlfriend these are unpronouncable for a non english speaking person
The Wonders before they blew up briefly used to spell it "The Oneders" and almsot everyone pronounced it like "The Oh-Nee-Deers"
I still don’t know how to pronounce Chappell Roan.
Blink 182. I used to call them "Blink One Eight Two" instead of "Blink One Eighty Two".
I thought the Deftones were the Deft-Ones.
Neil Peart's last name rhymes with "beard." It does not rhyme with "hurt."
Ludacris. Always pronounced him as lucandaris.
Ty Segall
For a year I pronounced Lorde as Lordy. Someone eventually corrected me and I felt dumb.
Used to pronounce Siouxsie Sioux "Sooxie Soox." I still forget at least one letter while typing "Siouxsie".
ok not an artist but a thing, i have to share this one, i knew someone who used to pronounce pringles as Pring Les .
Megan Thee Stallion
Thom Yorke I was saying it with the H. I still think it's really dumb he has the H in there. To me it's the most pretentious thing about Radiohead.
I called Earl Sweatshirt “Sweetheart” for the longest time.
- I thought JID was J, I, D - I though xxxtentacion was XXX, ten, tase, shin. I still don’t know how to pronounce it ngl.
ten-ta-shi-yon
Im not sure if it should have the “sh” sound. It should be ten-tah-see-own
for some reason, I must’ve heard someone else say it aloud, but I thought it was “zen”-tacion, like sensation but zen? no idea why, but “XXX ten tay see on” is a fuckin dumb name too, so whatever.
