I agree with Rush, especially because it’s interesting to hear their sound evolve through the 80s so much..
I also think Caress of Steel is not as bad as a lot of rush fans make it out to be.
IMO that’s the most rush, rush, has ever been.
LPOP is better than 2, but they are both the worst of the discography. However, both have hidden gems (why wouldn’t will put “I CAN TALK WITH MY EYES SHUT” on an actual album :( )
Came here to find Fiona Apple before commenting! She’s amazing. Her albums become more and more experimental from first album to newest and it’s a true delight to listen to them all.
I know there are people who disagree with Hov but I think including artists with albums that are generally agreed upon as bad along with classics is a good practice. You get the evolution of his style over time, from albums like Reasonable Doubt, to the Blueprint, to The Black Album, to 4:44, and then there’s still plenty of great tracks across the Vol. series and the other Blueprint albums. There’s definitely some low points and some bad songs, but I think still very worth listening all the way through
Queens of the Stone Age
The journey from the beginning to present day is an incredible ride. I absolutely love their evolution through the years. So many classics and so many bangers
I remember hearing Songs for the Deaf and thinking, "Ok, It couldn't possibly get better than this, right?", and then I listened to Like Clockwork which, at the very least, comes damn near close. Crazy cool discography from start to finish.
…Like Clockwork is an absolute masterpiece!
Their most recent In Times New Roman is also fantastic. Most bands fall victim to following a formula after a while but not Queens. Every record sounds different and they continue to up their game. Very impressive for this day and age.
First thought when I saw the question. I think there’s something for everyone across every album that you have to like at least one. More of that classic feel in Self-titled, darker + catchy riffs for SFTD, poppy Villains, etc. All done very well with maybe 3 bad songs
Looking at the three albums, I find something beautiful with how the first track is “Time has told me” and the last track of the discography being “From the Morning.” It’s like watching summer come in full swing to watching the last of the fall leaves come off the trees as the sun sets over the mountains.
Which two do you consider perfect? The only album of hers I've listened to in full is Ys, which I would consider perfect. I also like a lot of songs from Have One on Me.
Have One on Me is perfect to me. Though it’s dense and there’s so many long songs, I think the best way to approach it is one disc at a time and once you feel as though you’ve gotten to know all the songs well move onto the next. Divers is also a great album with some of my favorite songs! It just doesn’t quite reach the highs of the other two for me
Soft as Chalk was my favourite song by her for a long time. It's definitely time I listen to the whole album from start to finish. I didn't feel as connected to Divers but I will give it another try. I used to consider Sapokanikan the one song I didn't like by her and now I listen to it a lot, so maybe some of the other Divers songs will grow on me too!
Divers is interesting because lyrically I think it’s the hardest to decipher but song structure wise I think it’s the most approachable. A pin-light bent could be my favorite song of hers. Soft as Chalk is also great!
You lose out on little by skipping Pablo Honey. I mean if we’re counting that one I have to wonder which generally good acts *don’t* have discographies worth hearing in their entirety…
I am consistently dumbfounded by how TKOL isn't universally considered a "modern classic" in the same way that In Rainbows and AMSP are. I've considered it a masterpiece since my first listen and it has only become better with time.
The Cure, David Bowie, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, PJ Harvey, Cat Power, Sigur Ros, Kate Bush were some of the early ones I have downloaded in full and I have not regretted it.
Jimi Hendrix, Joy Division, The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, Nick Drake, Neutral Milk Hotel, Portishead, The Smiths, Nirvana, Black Country, New Road, Jeff Buckley and The Zombies all have relatively small core discographies that are very consistently good throughout, particularly the first three.
There’s stuff I like from it, but it’s definitely the most patience-testing of the bunch. I think all of their records have had a little bit of that, but we’ve also had longer to digest those
Inoculum to me is like if you asked an AI to write a tool album. Like yes I hear the familiar elements, but it feels very flat and lifeless to me. I don’t think further digesting will change that.
those first three albums are some of the best imo
but definitely start at quebec, then just go backwards. then when you reach the end, check out la cucaracha and shinola vol. 1. after that it's all of the entire catalog of unreleased stuff that's not on streaming.
They take a few listens but they’re pretty unique and awesome albums. I’m not sure there’s any album that gives me the same feeling as The Pod. That being said anyone starting out with Ween should start with their later works
I don’t even know if “flawless” is the word for their discography. But for the exercise of going through an artists catalog in chronological order, it doesn’t get much better, more fun or rewarding than that of the Beatles.
i’ve been listening to a lot of pre-rubber soul to try and understand the hype more before they became like… yk the goats. and i’m digging them. please please me is really solid.
Beatles for Sale is pretty weak and is like 1/3 covers right before they hit their creative stride. It lacked the charm and tightness of the first few records (particularly Help or HDN), and lacked the depth of songwriting from Rubber Soul on.
Please Please me is also not really that good.
People always rag on For Sale but the original tracks are great on it.
My least favourite personally is With The Beatles. Some of their more forgettable material on there and doesn’t really have a lot of identity as an album imo.
I love the Beatles but I really dislike Beatles for Sale. The rest of their earlier albums hold up much better but there’s definitely a reason that if you ask anyone what the best album of theirs is you’ll unquestionably get something between Rubber Soul and Abbey Road.
The Beatles were a blind spot in my music culture and I just knew a few hits that I kinda found boring and then a listened to the white album and realised I was so wrong lol. I’ll give the rest a try!
Fugazi, David Bowie, the Beatles, Nirvana, Queens of the Stone Age, Modest Mouse, the Flaming Lips, Radiohead, the Talking Heads, Pavement, Built to Spill
I feel like that late 80s and early 90s stretch of forgettable albums set up the late career resurgence really well that makes those later albums very satisfying listens.
Edit: as for Talking Heads. The last couple aren't as good but still fairly solid imo.
i've never been able to get into jazz before (probably because of terrible experiences playing in jazz band in hs) but i just discovered "tapestry from an asteroid" on spotify recently and i am absolutely in love with that song. where should i start with sun ra?
5 albums to start with Sun Ra
1. Lanquidity
2. Atlantis
3. A Fireside Chat with Lucifer
4. Jazz in Silhouette
5. Space is the Place
1,2, and 4 are, I would say, “easy mode” Sun Ra - conventional, accessible…. 3 is a bit of a jump in terms of eccentricity compared to 1, 2 and 4. Save 5 for last assuming you’ve enjoyed the rest
I think Space is the Place is a good deal more accessible than Atlantis. It’s a lot less abstract and actually having some lyrics (even if they’re chanted ad nauseam) made it a much easier listen to me.
don’t i know it. had to fly to LA last april just to see them cuz i managed to snag cheap tickets to their one off show in the US before coachella. (i’m from nyc)
"Worth listening to" has different meanings for different people. For me, I think Spoon has been very consistent, but with some admittedly less likeable entries. Animal Collective goes hard every time. Future Islands. Hot Chip's output continues to impress me. Girls would probably be the best answer for this prompt (at least in the indie rock sphere), though, because they have three what I would call A++ records, but with the death of half of the band, they will never be putting anything else out.
Talking Heads
Some albums are classics. Even their worst albums have something worthwhile. The discography isn’t that big. The albums are short by today’s standards. The investment of time isn’t that big and the content is top notch.
Depends on what you mean to some extent, some artists have very consistent discogs but don't experiment much, others experiment lots but miss sometimes as a result, but often those misses are interesting in their own right.
My favourite interpretation would be "artists were any record could be someone's justified favourite" and for that I would pick:
The Dillinger Escape Plan, Aphex Twin, and Fiona Apple
There are a bunch with smaller discogs but if you have less than 4 albums I think it's probably a little too short
Nick Drake and Jimi Hendrix obviously died with the most gasoline still left in their tanks. After that I would go with Steely Dan plus the Donald Fagan album The Nightfly...there is literally not a single song in all those albums I will skip.
This is a fairly basic take but if we’re talking studio albums I think Nirvana is really hard to beat. Bleach is weaker than Nevermind and In Utero but they’re all great and Nevermind and In Utero are 10s.
Touché Amoré has been incredibly consistent for me, bias since they're one of my favorite bands. Is Survived By and Stage Four are the really essential ones, but I love their early career and their latest has some really strong emotional moments
I'm seeing a lot of people saying Nirvana, but I'm gonna disagree. I think skipping WTLO and some other things is something you should do first listen. I think, do the studio albums, Incesticide and maybe Sliver TBOTB
Gang of Youths, Asian King Fu Generation, and if you want a discography that starts very well, drops a bit, but then makes its way back up, listen to the Strokes. I know everyone usually listens to Is This It, The New Abnormal, and Room on Fire, but everything in between is a very solid listen, it may not be everyone’s favorite, but in my opinion, First Impressions of Earth, Angles, and Comedown Machine are flawed albums that carry some of my favorite music ever and are definitely worth checking out. The first two are my favorite bands of all time no question
The Melvins! Multiple golden eras. I could make a case for any of their forty records as their greatest achievement or my favorite.
Self (Matt Mahaffey)
Propagandhi
Snuff (UK punk band)
I’m biased because they’re my favourite band of all time but title fight! They started the band when they were really young with a lot of pop punk and melodic hardcore influence but as they get older and more mature with each album their sound is reflected in that, becoming more and more shoegazey and their lyrics become more profound and poetic. Their discography is an experience of growing older and dealing with the loss of relationships that come along the way
Elliott Smith
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far down for the correct answer
Heatmiser’s three albums can also be thrown in. Cop and Speeder is on par with his solo stuff and Mic City Sons is amazing.
Talk Talk, Rush, Flaming Lips, Kendrick, Charles Mingus
I agree with Rush, especially because it’s interesting to hear their sound evolve through the 80s so much.. I also think Caress of Steel is not as bad as a lot of rush fans make it out to be. IMO that’s the most rush, rush, has ever been.
I used to hate Power Windows but it's really grown on me
Car Seat Headrest and LCD Soundsystem
every csh album is at least a little good. 2 and lpop are a bit rocky but the rest are all worth it
LPOP is better than 2, but they are both the worst of the discography. However, both have hidden gems (why wouldn’t will put “I CAN TALK WITH MY EYES SHUT” on an actual album :( )
OutKast for sure
An all-time great 5 album run, and idlewild
Fiona Apple, Steely Dan, the Smiths, Jay-Z, A Tribe Called Quest Are some that come to mind instantly
Jay Z’s discog is way too inconsistent for this
Yeah Jay-Z has many great albums but he also he has a shit load of albums
I mean he only has 2 actually bad albums imho, tho I guess that would immediately disqualify him in this situation lol
Steely Dan's 21st century albums are underrated. Album of the Year aside. I mean by Dan fans.
I can vouch for Steely Dan, my funky one.
There’s definitely some low points and some bad songs, but I think still very worth listening all the way through
Exactly 👏🏼
Steely Dan are so fucking good like holy shit man
You have good taste lol, not just dad rock and not just relatively older hip-hop, but both!
Thank you ;)

Queens of the Stone Age The journey from the beginning to present day is an incredible ride.

You can even throw in Them Crooked Vultures as a bonus and it still works.
100%. Desert Sessions as well. Josh is a goddamn genius
I mean if were using Josh a throughline may as well add Kyuss to the list as well.
Loved this project, always wished it lasted more than an album but even just that one album rocks so hard man
First thought when I saw the question. I think there’s something for everyone across every album that you have to like at least one. More of that classic feel in Self-titled, darker + catchy riffs for SFTD, poppy Villains, etc. All done very well with maybe 3 bad songs
Nick Drake is flawless
And you can finish it in two hours
I read this as “ Nice, Drake is flawless” lmao
Me too 😂
True from take care to for all the dogs he’s been incredible
Lmao
Looking at the three albums, I find something beautiful with how the first track is “Time has told me” and the last track of the discography being “From the Morning.” It’s like watching summer come in full swing to watching the last of the fall leaves come off the trees as the sun sets over the mountains.
My big three if I had to listen to on a long road trip. Only these artists for 12+ hours and not get bored - Kendrick Lamar - The Cure - Gorillaz
The fall singlehandedly holding Gorillaz back
Vampire Weekend, Beach House, Candy Claws, The Avalanches, The Police
Love the Beach House pick, their discography is stupid consistent
Justice for Father of the Bride 🙏
FOTB was ok, they just needed to trim it!
Candy claws 🤤🤤
Second the Avalanches!
Analanches and Candy Claws for sure
avalanches discog is flawless
The Police's debut album is absolute fire. Really short too!! Highly recommend.
Joanna Newsom, only four albums but they’re all so great and I’d say two of the four albums are perfect
sad her discog isn't on Spotify
Every time I look her up forgetting she's not on spotify and that damn muppets song is the only thing that comes up ahaha
A Pin-Light Bent is so beautiful! I'm listening to it right now.
Death GWips
Obligatory Radiohead answer
You lose out on little by skipping Pablo Honey. I mean if we’re counting that one I have to wonder which generally good acts *don’t* have discographies worth hearing in their entirety…
As much as i hate to say it but king of the limbs is really not on par with either is previous or succeeding album
Except it is, 3 of their absolute best songs are on there and the other 5 range from solid to amazing
one day you people will understand that TKOL is top 5 Radiohead.
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds
I respectfully disagree - with all the love I have for the bad seeds, all of them!
I guess we’re not counting Squeeze?
Tool, Kendrick, King Gizzard (that one might take a bit longer)
The journey from Opiate to Fear Inoculum is a wild one.
The evolution is something I can always appreciate
Which one is your favorite?
Lateralus has been my mainstay but there have been times when I listened to Ænima or 10,000 Days and thought they were the best too.
Lateralus is a perfect album. It’s aged so well too. I’d put it at #1 in their catalogue.
Yeah man it’s definitely the sweet spot in their discography for me, and Disposition>Reflection>Triad is probably my favorite thing they’ve ever done.
Fear inoculum kinda wrecks tool for this imo
There’s stuff I like from it, but it’s definitely the most patience-testing of the bunch. I think all of their records have had a little bit of that, but we’ve also had longer to digest those
Inoculum to me is like if you asked an AI to write a tool album. Like yes I hear the familiar elements, but it feels very flat and lifeless to me. I don’t think further digesting will change that.
Yeah that’s what frustrates me too. To me, there’s parts that still hit, but then it gets undercut by exactly what you’re describing.
Alex G, Diiv, Portishead, Beach House, Black MIDI, Daft Punk
Ween and animal collective
As much as I love ween, those first three albums are rough listens that I wouldn't recommend to everyone
They are all great those just take a little more time for some.
those first three albums are some of the best imo but definitely start at quebec, then just go backwards. then when you reach the end, check out la cucaracha and shinola vol. 1. after that it's all of the entire catalog of unreleased stuff that's not on streaming.

Beatles has flawless discography!
I don’t even know if “flawless” is the word for their discography. But for the exercise of going through an artists catalog in chronological order, it doesn’t get much better, more fun or rewarding than that of the Beatles.
I mean idk… i think they clearly found their stride at a certain point deeper in
Their songwriting kicks into high gear around Rubber Soul/Revolver but there's really not a bad album in the bunch
i’ve been listening to a lot of pre-rubber soul to try and understand the hype more before they became like… yk the goats. and i’m digging them. please please me is really solid.
Beatles for Sale is pretty weak and is like 1/3 covers right before they hit their creative stride. It lacked the charm and tightness of the first few records (particularly Help or HDN), and lacked the depth of songwriting from Rubber Soul on. Please Please me is also not really that good.

I honestly don't care for anything pre-Rubber Soul
A Hard Day’s Night is a perfect album
I like specific songs, not so much the full albums (even though there's no song that I hate).
Help is a great album tho
Yes, I understand the prejudice against the pre-Rubber Soul era, but truly, Help is a great album, both from a pop/sound and lyrics point of view.
I’ll give the rest a try!
anything before Rubber Soul you can pretty much discard as non-essential
Fugazi, David Bowie, the Beatles, Nirvana, Queens of the Stone Age, Modest Mouse, the Flaming Lips, Radiohead, the Talking Heads, Pavement, Built to Spill
>David Bowie, Ehhhhh idk. He had some really bad albums. Last Talking Heads albums are not that good either
I feel like that late 80s and early 90s stretch of forgettable albums set up the late career resurgence really well that makes those later albums very satisfying listens. Edit: as for Talking Heads. The last couple aren't as good but still fairly solid imo.
Sufjan Stevens Dirty Projectors Jeff Rosenstock
Charli XCX, Brand New, Destroyer, Four Tet, Boards of Canada
respect for saying destroyer, love that band
definitely brand new. not a single bad album.
Alice in chains layne era and the weeknd
Honestly, post-Layne AiC is just parading a dead corpse
System of a Down
I think varied discographies with artist that constantly try to reinvent themselves are the most interesting, like Kanye or Linkin Park
True. Linkin park underrated for that
Sun ra
i've never been able to get into jazz before (probably because of terrible experiences playing in jazz band in hs) but i just discovered "tapestry from an asteroid" on spotify recently and i am absolutely in love with that song. where should i start with sun ra?

That’s just, like, your opinion, man - but I respect it and can, under some moods, agree
you beat me to the cure so i gotta say bjork
Sade, Erykah Badu, Pink Floyd
Idk about _all_ of PF's discography...
for sure but even the weaker releases are engaging listening experiences even if they're not all amazing
Aphex Twin
Heavy on Blur, their discography is soo diverse and feels like a story arc of their music evolution imo
blur is stupid underrated in the states
don’t i know it. had to fly to LA last april just to see them cuz i managed to snag cheap tickets to their one off show in the US before coachella. (i’m from nyc)

i once did a drake discography listen, worst mistake of my life. i was in physical pain from honestly nevermind. i mean jesus christ man.
I'm doing the beach boys discography and just awful and painful but I don't regret it
The Fall...Best thing you could ever do...so much great musik can be found from these guys from beginning to end
How is Ornette Coleman not the top answer? Not a single bad album, and classics in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 00s (alas not the 90s).
because people here only circlejerk the albums that anthony mentions at some point.
