Congrats! I got over my fear almost a few days ago. Took a flight to Boston from EWR & back. I just need to go on a plane a few more times to get over my heebiejeebies, I'm going to Vermont tomorrow then on Saturday I fly to JAX to where I'll be staying the night :) The entire world opens up for you when you get over that big initial "OMFG" flight where you think the worlds gonna end. But after 15 minutes, you'll settle down.

DailYxDosE

You’re almost there!

[deleted]

Is this to train the nervous system? Doing it alone? How old? What’s the fears? :)

FUCK YES DUDE I REMEMBER CHATTING WITH YOU. See it's nowhere near like you said !!! And even with any turbulence it's just bumpy!! Not dropping!! Saw this headline and was praying it was you that wrote it and it was !!! Unreal stuff. I'm the same with the whole height thing. Once you up there it doesn't even seen real you just look down and it's so smooth and chill and you don't realise how high u are

DailYxDosE

Yes! Thank you so much for all the support leading up to my flight. I had you all in mind during my flight. It helped a lot. And you’re right once you’re up there the heights aren’t even noticeable. It’s actually really beautiful. We’re lucky humans to be experiencing that.

sabinazan

My flight is tomorrow and I haven’t flown in 10 years! I used to enjoy flying, but I’ve developed an anxiety disorder in the mean time, so I am hoping to cling to this memory and your story. 🥰

KZM25

You’re gonna do great – think of the Destination/how good you will feel about yourself for not letting yourself get overwhelmed-and even if you do start to feel overwhelmed -count 54321 let it be over with take some deep breath‘s -Think of the destination and happy thoughts –and start again if you have to

DailYxDosE

The 54321 tactic worked amazingly. I said this several times during acceleration and takeoff. When the first turbulence happened I did it once and my mind was back at ease. Highly recommend this tactic.

ahalbauer

What is the 54321 tactic?

DailYxDosE

Anytime my anxiety wonders or I’m having bad thoughts I will count down from 5 and then drop in an acnhor thought. For me my anchor on the first flight was seeing my long time friend who lives states away and how fun the weekend with him would be. On my return flight my anchor thought was going home and seeing my dog who I missed so much! It helped a lot.

ahalbauer

This will be helpful, thank you

DailYxDosE

You got this

This is amazing to read and I'm very happy for you! I'm flying this Sunday and for the last few weeks have been trying everything to help me get through it. I've been trying so YouTube hypnotherapy and I think it's beginning to work, I am hopeful!

KZM25

You were gonna do great! Simply said but Choose to feel the excitement and not the fear!❤️ wishing you the best

Dawes1320

emilycal23

So excited for you!! I can't wait to be in your shoes one day! Do you have any tips or tricks that helped you get through it?! Congrats and well done 👏 🎉

DailYxDosE

You can do it 100%! Some things that really worked for me were the 54321 method. Everytime I started thinking bad things I would count down from 5 and drop in an anchor thought. For me my anchor was everyone in this sub and being able to see my friend who moved away. I also took Xanax. It worked great for the anticipation anxiety in the days leading up to the flight but it didn’t work for my anxiety on takeoff. I was quite relaxed on the plane tho and I’m not sure if it’s due to the meds or just due to the fact that I realized flying was not as bad as I thought. Also, whenever you catch yourself being negative about the flight or flying in general you need to stop yourself and say positivism things. Remind yourself how easy flying is, how trained pilots are, that thousands of people fly safely everyday, replace those negative thoughts with positive images. Also, seeing how normal everyone was being at the airport and especially seeing kids boarding the airplane made me realize if a kid can do it why shouldn’t I be able to! My two biggest worries were the thought of being 30k up in the air and how the sensations would feel. There was zero stomach drops and at most the sensations felt like an elevator. Even at the most intense point it just felt like I just became a little heavy as if a weight was on my head but no funny stomach drops like a roller coaster.

ArgoCS

If you don’t mind me asking, how much Xanax did you end up taking? I have a pretty hefty Ativan prescription but I’d like to stay towards the bottom end of what I can take. Also how was being 30k feet up in the air for you? I think I’m mostly okay with my upcoming flights (a very recent development) but feel like I’ll freak out if I look out the window.

DailYxDosE

I was prescribed .5mg pills and that worked with anxiety leading up the the flights int he days before but it didn’t calm me down when I was at the gate. So I took another half pill so .75mg in total. I have a terrible fear of heights. I get shaky legs and avoid anything to do with heights. But when we were up there it never bothered me once. The height isn’t even understandable at that point. I even looked out the window for the entire landing and that didn’t even bother me. It just feels different in the plane. Quite beautiful and amazing tbh. Trust the professionals upfront and the engineering that goes into airplanes and you should be good.

ArgoCS

Thank you for the information. Especially the bit about the height not getting to you, I think (hope) I’ll have a very similar reaction to you. I remember seeing your comments and posts leading up to your flight and I’m super proud of you! Seeing your reaction and conquering of this fear is extremely inspirational and will help me in conquering my own!

DailYxDosE

You got this!! If the height becomes too much just close your eyes and focus on your anchor thought and you should be good. Thank you so much!

Great job!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉

LETS GOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! CHEERS!

DailYxDosE

Yes! 🍻

av626

I’ll be traveling to Seattle for the first time in my life. Any suggestions on how to calm my nerves.

DailYxDosE

I took Xanax but it didn’t feel like it ever kicked in. What helped me a lot was the 54321 method whenever I got nervous and also reminding myself how safe and normal the whole thing is. I just focused on the moment and did not allow myself to tell myself negative thoughts.

KZM25

🏁great job with your thoughts!!!

Klutzy_Composer_1031

DailYxDosE

Thank you! You got this! It’s going to be so easy I promise.

sylvsmaria

Amazing! Did you take any medicine

KZM25

I am taking a flight next week. I am very nervous. I’m trying to talk myself out of it. In listening to videos and reading articles they all say they a mix about taking medicine or not. I’ll try not to and let my “sober“ mind navigate my nerves but I will bring them. I think we should have no judgment on ourselves if we do decide to take a Xanax or whatever you take. I do take Xanax on occasion – maybe once every two months to help me sleep. and it does do a great job making me relax – so we shall see. On my last flight I took half a Xanax and on the way back I didn’t take anything because it was such a short flight and I didn’t wanna feel sleepy for the day So for this 2 1/2 then 7 1/2 hour flight– maybe I’ll take it maybe I won’t but no shame if I do All the best to you❤️

DailYxDosE

I would highly suggest xanax! It works well on calming you down. Do not cancel you got this! I was so scared the days before my flight. Waking up shaking. Miserable. I was going to cancel my entire trip. And I didn’t and I’m so happy for it. I’m here on vacation and I just had an awesome night that I haven’t had in awhile. This flight will be so worth it. Please do it medicine or not.

DailYxDosE

I took Xanax! I took it the days before and it helped a lot. I took it when I was at the airport because I was panicking seeing the planes take off and it didn’t work at first. But once I got passed take off the flight was a breeze. Not sure if it kicked in late but I would recommend it!
