The best part is how meta it is. *Estinien earns it by killing the Thavnair world boss, which is how we can earn the exact same costume*.
Aymeric sent an offer to Estinien to work guard duty after Endwalker. It was almost certainly a joke; the idea of the famed Azure Dragoon manning a guard post would be downright absurd. Aymeric sent the offer to poke fun at Estinien's sudden unemployment, as well as a light-hearted jab at Estinien's money problems. Estinien responded with an appropriate counter-jab, sending Aymeric a ridiculous costume as his "answer". And Aymeric proceeded to admit defeat by unironically wearing the costume on guard duty himself.
It's just the latest in a series of wholesome roasts and counter-roasts by the two guys, and I adore every part of it.
It's all optional and ambient dialogue.
The bulk of it is during the end of Endwalker, >!when all the Scions are hanging around the Rising Stones after the group's formal disbandment.!< Talk to Estinien again after his 'mandatory' conversation, and he'll talk about Aymeric sending him the guard offer. He'll also mention an "outlandish" costume being rewarded for hunting a lingering blasphemy in Thavnair, and how he might send it to Aymeric as a response.
And then, you can find a mysterious blue elephant in various zones around Ishgard. The elephant suit is the Gaja Costume you earn from Daivadipa's Beads, from the world boss in Thavnair, which lines up with the costume Estinien was referring to (and since it's from Thavnair, there isn't really any *other* way it would've wound up in Ishgard!). Moreover, the costume fully covers up the wearer's features, rendering them totally anonymous... *except the elephant has Aymeric's unique sword resting on its waist*, leaving no doubt to who is inside it (assuming you're familiar enough with Aymeric to know he uses that sword, and familiar enough with Ishgard to know that it's not a common sword design).
There isn't a way to speak to him, he doesn't out himself at all. The player has to either recognize the gag from the EW end dialogues or recognize his sword, there's no other note if who it is.
Although some people used third party tools to confirm that they did indeed use Aymeric's NPC and shove the elephant outfit into it, which is a nice little detail that no one would know without breaking ToS lol

'Thancred's rampant flirting'? When? Where? Was I just blind? I have played all the way through endwalker and I never felt like Thancred regarded me as anything more than a colleague.
So, one of the coolest things in the game I’ve found to track is what all the various scion npcs get up to in the Waking Sands or Rising Stones.
In between every MSQ, there is a chance that they will get dialogue updates as they go about their own responsilities and lives. This is true for the Major Scions like Thancred or Yshtola, the minor scions like Hoary and his squad, or even the various other members like Riol.
They all get up to a lot of stuff, some of it funny (like Aenor) or serious (Riol is constantly getting up to important spying, he’s probably the most important scion who isn’t one of the main cast). Some of them are just pure fluff, like Homei and Isildaure, the two old guys who always gripe about wanting to help but being too old.
So for Thancred’s fuckboy phase: once you hit the rising stones, the rate of these dialogue updates ramps up intensely. There is a period in ARR post patches where there are updates between every quest. During this time, Thancred hits on every single woman in the Rising Stones, and it culminates in a scene where 5 women all show up simultaneously to take him on dates at the same time, and get into a fight.
There is a lot of lore and character building you miss out on if you skip these dialogues!

I knew about the culmination scene but I had never noticed that there were precursor ones where he hits on all of them individually. Hilarious.
He doesn't hit on those random NPC's that show up, but he hits on Moenbryda and F'lahmin and I think a Doman woman? He does mention some of them, like the ore girl in passing though. Thancred asked her for help and then gets all mad that Yda shows up to get it, Yda's oblivious as to why she was so upset and Thancred's like "Yeah, that was kind of stupid of me to send Yda."
If whenever you go to the waking sands and rising stones in between MSQ quests the NPCs have dialogue with side stories. There are usually women who believe themselves to be Thancred's girlfriend. At one point, there are like 5 women fighting over him

Thancred had been living as a hermit in the Hinterlands all that time, after all, with only the company of Gnath, bears, and his nutkin. Getting back to civilization and seeing a hot half-elezen who rose up from a lowly street rat just like he did? Yeah, he probably poured on his best seduction skills, and Hilda seems like the kind to appreciate a bit of fun with no obligation.
The one time Thancred interacts with Hilda in the MSQ, she refers to him unironically as an old man, and he looks like he has a minor meltdown.
It is literally the last time he flirts with anyone in the MSQ.

Which they *could* do in either case, but likely don't because they prefer it being open to interpretation generally, and not everyone *wants* romance options or could be weirded out by it coming from someone you're "stuck" with for awhile. There's valid reasons for them not doing it with the Scions imo.

I mean the WoL has several pansexual admirers including Haurchefaunt, G'raha and Aliases, so I don't think that's the issue. I think they just coded Thancred to be straight
While it is true that she is 16, in Sharlayan culture that makes her a legal adult. We can dispute whether that is a good idea or not, but there would be nothing illegal about such a relationship. Further, both of them are functionally Sharlayan culturally. Alisaie was born in the colony, and Thancred was effectively adopted as a teenager by Louisoix and educated in Sharlayan.
It's much like the differences in drinking age between the US and Europe. Most Europeans can drink at age 18. In the US, it's 21. Or how numerous US states define the age of consent to be 16 or 17, not 18 (my home state defines it as 18, but a majority do not.)
Not sure right now, but I think it was after you've rescued the poor lass from that one creepy dude and his cronies. You can view the encounter in your journal thing at the inn--it shows every version of that cutscene. I learned about it in this subreddit, so I'm sure someone could point you to the name of the quest and the correct scene number.
Also--to me, Ul'dah is the best starting zone because of the Scions' ties to Thanalan and its leadership--and even the Scions' HQ is in this region. It all felt really natural when I played through on an alt.
I'm not a big fan of the Ul'dah story and Thank is just super ugly. Gridanian is beautiful, has the best leader and is beautiful. Did I mention it's beautiful

Many NPCs are WoLsexual; I don’t think having Thancred flirt with male or female WoLs would be an issue.
