The tooltip is incorrect, it's when your Egi-Assault skills deal damage to an enemy.
It's better described on other languages, the English tooltip doesn't specify that.

The English tooltips for the Egi Asault traits are badly written and in this case basically just wrong. The Japanese tooltip explicitly states something to the effect of hitting an enemy with an Egi Assault action to proc the Ruin 4.
I think it's because of the move being solely defensive. It doesn't proc because it's not technically an attack, I guess.
I thought about that, but the "Enhanced Ruin II" ability says I should gain a stack when I use Egi Assault :(

Yeah that's pretty darn misleading then. Thanks for the clarification. Guess Titan-Egi is even less useful than I had thought.
Unfortunately yes. Earthen Armor is still really good for open world, but as it has been since launch, Titan-egi is the bottom of the pile.
Yup, as of 5.1 they finally clarified the English tooltip "The egi-assault used must be an attack action."
It doesn’t give me Further Ruin with any egi.
Are you level 62? That's when it begins to do that. Also, be careful you're not clipping it with other abilities so it gets eaten by your pet :/

It's possible that they didn't want you to be able to get 'free' stacks during transition phases where you have no targets to hit.

Maybe you’re thinking about the level 74 passive?
No, that gives Further Ruin for Egi Assault II, the level 62 passive gives it for Egi Assault (I)
