Exactly. It's scripted, it purposely misleads that it is another type of amateur sumo, and even the very best real matches here are utter shit compared to the lower ranks of real rikishi going at it.
There's a sumo tournament every other month - with one coming up this July. If you aren't in Japan and cannot get tickets to see it live, you can watch online. There's lots of YouTube channels that post highlights - including official ones... There's live streamers who will show live action every night and even talented guys like Natto Sumo who make videos after each day of a tournament.
Come check out the main sumo sub (and also the SumoMemes sub - far friendlier and more fun) during a tournament for a lot of talk and video links and jokes.
https://www.youtube.com/@NHKWORLDJAPAN
edit: Sorry I didn't check the videos they post first, its just a quagmire of japanese media, but that channel posts english translated sumo matches a day or so after they take place. There are several youtube channels (or maybe commentators from NHK doing side work idk) that all post after the events. Try just searching NHK sumo. If you want to start at the beginning of the tournament they usually list they days of each series of bouts. Day 1 day 2 etc.
In the past, yes - now, not so much.
Edit: I can promise you that match fixing in a pro sumo tournament would lead to massive fines and expulsion. Even the ones that happened in the past were, more often than not, "fixes" just for rikishi who were in danger of going MK (more losses than wins) and wanted to hang onto status. There was a MASSIVE purging and rules added and investigations opened in the 2011 and even that was contentious and many of the accused still assert to this day that they never took part in it.
If you think match fixing still takes place in pro sumo (outside of Jungyo which is meant to be fun and silly), then by all means post it.
I kind of feel like this is fake, and staged. Disclaimer: I don't know the first thing about any form or marital arts, but in theory for the little guy to throw the big guy it seems to me the conditions where he can use the leverage required have to be perfect, and I can't see that happening unless it was cooperative, and rehearsed.
Also, wrestling is fake.
[uwatenage (over arm throw) in proper sumo](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/jXZwxHTRRmo)
very rarely you see big dude gets thrown like a cartwheel. also it seems silly to throw him out of the ring when it is easier to drop him on the spot since smaller guy already had big guy off balance.
and the dude in this vid claims he took a little hop to avoid injury, but seems to me dropping to his knee is better than body slamming himself lol.
Totally real. Look at all those videos of guys throwing people 20-30 feet. Almost all “throws” keep the thrower in the center or near center of the circle of the throw.
I remember when I saw Sumo back in 2012 I saw something very similar, small guy up against a much larger fella. Taking him down with absolute grace and ease.

This is World Championship Sumo and is closer to WWE than an actual sumo match

Curious as to where one could watch an honest to god sumo match

Thanks for the link man
Yeah the real Rikishi doles out stink faces and dances with Scotty 2 Hotty
I had no idea there was a scripted Sumo league lol. So the skinny guy is the babyface.
I had no idea either. It's probably because it's a really stupid idea. Any person who is a fan of this gets an automatic red flag.
Even in legit Sumo there are big corruption problems leading to plenty of fixed matches. Source: saw it somewhere on the internet once.

That's exactly what a Yakuza would say...
Yakuza are more involved in gambling, offering grey area prostitution, and are very - very into "dog sumo" which is just some nasty dog fighting.
You seem to actually know what you're talking about, unlike me, so I trust you.
Come watch some sumo soon and then hang out in Sumo Memes. We have fun.
I’m glad I know more about the Yakuza now. They’re fascinating.
> This is World Championship Sumo and is closer to WWE than an actual sumo match I was going to say, you can watch big boy jump into the throw lol
I was about to say, the force and perfect execution of that throw gave me scripted vibes
That makes sense. When I saw this, my first thought was that this was so picturesque that it seemed staged.
Damn, thought it was cool until I read this... we need real Sumo in U.S. it's fascinating.
There's a growing amateur sumo scene in the US. It's a fun sport
Was thinking the same . Haha, it looked pretty staged 🤣
I particularly enjoy the fake? obstruction just as he is getting hip-tossed and of lifted.
Yeah, couldn't take it seriously when big guy oversold that throw out of the circle.
OK, that makes sense. They way the big guy flopped over had me wondering.
Do they also have promos. That looks far more entertaining
Reddit: Where everything is made up, no one can tell, and the points don't matter.
you can see the fakeness before you even click the vid
Yay! More fake shit
I love real shit like the guy who looks 100% locked in and when it starts he just moves out the way and the other guy lunges and falls out the ring
Henka feelsbadman
Wow. Creed 4 looks sick.
That was like so clearly fake, dude. Wtf are you on about
Faker than my kids love for me
You do realize this is fake, right ?
This has nothing to do with sumo..

sack o tators
Every fake video posted reminds me how gullible reddit is.
Something doesn’t look right in this video.
I call shenanigans. someone right in front of the camera just as one would need to see the marvel of physics required for that toss.

This looks fake as hell
Love the obstructed view when the "throw" starts.
lol that ref
Does anyone know if this is the traveling group in LA or SF? If so im now not going
Is this fighter's name "Keto"? /s
Looks like bro is throwing his massive XXXXXL bean bag chair into the corner of the room ...
Breakfall was textbook…
Thats some Steven Seagal shit.
I didn't know Canelo reffed Sumo on the side lol
What in the world did I just see??

It would have been nice if they slowed down the actual throw so you can see technique instead of just the result
That's why they didn't slow it down or show from the other side... It's fake
What makes you think it's fake?
That's my buddy Tadlock in purple! We came up in the DFW wrestling scene in the early 2010s. Awesome dude
Totally real. Look at all those videos of guys throwing people 20-30 feet. Almost all “throws” keep the thrower in the center or near center of the circle of the throw.
A fat man in a diaper does not a Rikishi make
I remember when I saw Sumo back in 2012 I saw something very similar, small guy up against a much larger fella. Taking him down with absolute grace and ease.
Is that AI?
HOLY shit what??!
That was so insanely impressive that it looks fake/staged. Big boy must’ve had jet packs hidden in his feet or something lol
Uchi mata without the use of legs . Only by haki
Was really not expecting that toss
The absolute strength that guy has.
>strength Yeah.. no
Pssst it's fake
Technique used appropriately can overpower strength.
The technique here was script writing
His stance was better he's able to channel more power to his body
He was able to channel more power because that's what the script dictated
😂
If this is porn, why are they wearing clothes?
Very John Wick-esque
One is pure muscles, the other one pure fat
