At the end of the day, what works best is unique for each person. Frequency of washing, style technique, texture, and density will all factor into end results. Here’s my tips - expensive isn’t always better. Sulfate free isn’t always better. Some will tell you to avoid heavy conditioning - some of us really benefit from heavy conditioning. Ultimately for me - moisture and reducing heat usage were the magic formula. This meant my 7 day wash routine needed to be revised. I still only wash every 7 days, but I co-wash on day 3/4. The extra conditioning did wonders for my dry, damaged locks. I have fine 1B hair, but a lot of density. I was prone to horrific breakage anytime I lightened my hair. I only go darker now and stick with the roots.

slaviccivicnation

I think this is perfect. It’s so individualized it’s hard to give good advice. It’s up to each person to figure out what works best through trial and error. I have type 1a hair. For me, personally, I wash my hair nightly but every other day I’ll only focus on my bang area with a tiny bit of shampoo and let the run off cleanse the rest. I condition mid and ends daily with different conditioners on rotation plus a mask a few times a week. Avoiding heat styling is absolutely key but sometimes impossible when I wear my hair down, so I just limit it to smoothing hair ends with a large round brush. I stopped lightening my whole head and do highlights on my crown area now. That way, the length of hair isn’t compromised as the lowest part gets no lightening treatment, yet I can enjoy some ashed out bleach strands all the same.

historicalcabbage

thank you! I really appreciate it!

twenty7mushroomcaps

What do you mean by cowash

Delilah_Moon

Conditioner - no shampoo. You really rinse your hair with water, and work the conditioner like a shampoo. Let it sit for 5 mins and rinse.

adrie_brynn

So much this. I have fine, medium density hair with a slight wave and I've mostly always colour-treated it. Now, I only use a semi-permanent dye once every couple of months or so. I've been through the gamut with hair dye-- bleach, darkening to black, and even vibrant colours! I'm a natural blonde. I've ALWAYS went through way more conditioner than shampoo. It makes my hair super soft and manageable and still feels light. I typically use more moisturizing products than those made for volume. But it varies. I've not found a "holy grail" when it comes to haircare. I use head and shoulders 2 in 1 w eucalyptus right now for dandruff maintenance, and I like it. I still follow up with extra conditioner afterward once or twice a week and alternate use of that shampoo with a standard shampoo. I just bought a shampoo I've never used before from a brand called Jason, and it has sea kelp in its formulation. We will see how it goes. My kids use my stuff, too. I typically wash my hair every 2 or 3 days. Basically, when the roots start to get greasy. So 2-3x per week. I used to wash DAILY in high school!! My preference is to use batiste dry shampoo one day after washing, but sometimes I can stretch it to using dry shampoo for 2 days after wash day. I do heat style with a protective spray using a flat iron only on the front and sides of my hair on occasion. I recently got a layered hair cut and I don't like it when my hair waves differently on each side as I like to showcase the layers and make it look uniform on both sides. I can still wash and go, however, so that's good, too. It truly is trial and error.

I have fine, bleached hair as well and I’m loving the Pureology Strength Cure shampoo and conditioner. The shampoo is sulfate free but lathers really well and it’s also really concentrated so you don’t need to use much. The conditioner isn’t too heavy for fine hair but it still leaves my hair soft and tangle free. The conditioner does have silicone but it is a water soluble silicone and from my understanding that means it doesn’t build up in your hair. It also has protein in it which is a plus for bleached hair. Also, it doesn’t have the strong mint smell like the hydrate line. Since I started using it I can also go an extra day or two between washes. I also love the Olaplex clarifying shampoo every 5 or 6 washes. I highly recommend it!

theamester85

Redken All Soft w/ silk or satin pillow cases. I shower at night and my hair looks fine the next day. If push comes to shove, I can go another half day before my hair is a greasy mess.

mllebitterness

This is me too. My hair definitely looks even better is I use my silk bonnet.

Altheapup

Redken acidic bonding line. It’s my absolute favorite line of products. Totally transformed my hair

mak3_y0urself

This is what I use too and it makes my hair soft and manageable, despite bleaching. Highly recommend.

NOR_CAL-Native

I wanted to love Verb Ghost, but ultimately it was too heavy for my fine hair. Also, the scent reminded me of paint. After lots of trial and error, i.e. dollars spent, Redken All-Soft is go to with Redken Volume Inject a very close 2nd.

tchurchiill

I currently use the AG Moisture shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in conditioner spray and it has been AMAZING. My hair feels so much better after being destroyed by Pureology’s “moisture” shampoo.

gatadeplaya

Love the Olaplex line. A little goes a long way. If you have breakage? Definitely do a treatment once a week with the #3. It’s a deceptively small bottle that lasts for months.

Elegant_Building_995

I second with olaplex line. If you're on a budget sallys mades a knock off line and it's very close.

mrslame

My MIL loves the knock-off Olaplex from Sally's! She said it's very similar to Olaplex.

db9485

Do you know the name? On a budget so olaplex is not possible for me

Elegant_Building_995

Bondbar

db9485

Thank you!

dupersr

I third Olaplex. It’s expensive but worth it.

Unit01Pilot

olaplex had my hair falling out, but i don’t lighten my hair so maybe that’s why

[deleted]

olaplex made my scalp itch horribly and it took a minute to figure out it was the olaplex bc i have issues with dandruff/sebderm. It seems people either love or hate it

Unit01Pilot

i absolutely love their hair oil though. it’s amazing for thin fine hair

sciencefaire

Olaplex did the same to my hair. My hair is highlighted but it wasn't breakage either, it was actually causing hair loss. It was horrible.

yowza_wowza

I agree!

pelipperr

I love olaplex! I need to wash everyday because I have the oiliest hair known to man and I switch between olaplex and Verb ghost shampoo and conditioner because olaplex can be a little heavy for everyday use. But if I have a couple days where no one will see me I won’t wash my hair, let it get super oily and then wash with olaplex, it’s always the best my hair ever looks.

Unit01Pilot

whatever you pick don’t let it be the redkin extreme length line. my hair was coming out in CLUMPS. felt so deceived

C_Wrex77

My hair is fine, non-porous, wavy (2b), and medium density. I have natural dish water blonde, but it's currently highlighted. It has taken me years to find a good combo for my current hair. I wash 2x/week. I shampoo with "Not Your Mother's Coastal Mint and Sea Holly", condition with either the match conditioner or K18, and I manage my breakage and damage with the K18 leave in every other wash. K18 has changed my life

sciencefaire

K18 is a great product. I used olaplex years ago but it actually caused me a ton of hair loss. My hairdresser recommended to stop using it and moved to k18 and it's been great since. I managed to grow my hair back to it's regular density thankfully.

[deleted]

I would take the recommends here (& maybe look at what's on recent "best shampoo for fine hair" lists) and find travel sizes. I always look for travel sizes when picking new hair products. I also alternate between a few shampoos. Right now my favorite is Pureology sheer hydrate. But as others have said it's pretty individual. Climate, how hard your water is, your daily activity level, all play a big role. I've had to change my shampoo every time i moved.

crystal-crawler

I like verb ghost shampoo and their clarifying shampoo

MunchieMom

Kevin Murphy Angel Wash. I used to use the conditioner but now skip it 95% of the time because it weighs my hair down. They even have a special version for color treated blonde hair.

ManicMondayMaestro

I use the ghost conditioner and am underwhelmed. It is super lightweight as promised, but it turns out I like more moisture. Lately I’ve been using the Garnier Honey Treasures set and have enjoyed it immensely.

ooo-f

Redkin saved my hair, it looks like I have twice as much volume

FragrantJob7291

which redken shampoo do you use?

yowza_wowza

I have fine, beached hair too. I third olaplex. I use no. 5 for daily wash and condition, no 3 around once a week for treatment, and the purple shampoo (can't remember the no) when I need to tone. When I wash my hair I barely use any shampoo and try to only wash my scalp. Then very little conditioner as a detangler and comb it out in the shower. This routine has helped me minimize breakage and hair loss. Good luck!

balsasailormoon

I love Oribe for my fine,fragile,color-treated hair. It’s expensive, but I have been using my current bottle for 14 months. Other than shampoo/conditioner, look into taking supplements like Biotin for strength and flaxseed oil for smoothness among other things.

Accomplished-Mind258

Vitamins MIGHT be helpful if her hair was falling out but since that isn’t the case it won’t do much. Vitamins don’t change genetics and fine hair is pretty much a genetic trait. Hair gets finer as we age, too, of course, but unless there’s a true vitamin B deficiency discovered, taking one won’t help. Sad but true.

balsasailormoon

You’re right, they don’t change genetics. However, just as hydration and a healthy diet affect our skin, so does what we take into our body affect our hair. Well, at least it has for me.

Accomplished-Mind258

They do-but even then, hydration and diet won’t be able to help past a certain point ( a definite exception being if someone is malnourished. That’s still only in regard to its growth and how much one has- not the individual texture of each strand). If biotin does help, however, it would just be to promote the growth of more fine hair. You can manipulate the look of fine and frizzy hair externally, but not its internal structure.

icedlatte98

Which oribe do you use?

balsasailormoon

Oribe Hair Alchemy. It’s amazing. My first haircut after the switch my hairdresser asked what I had been doing differently.

Poolgoddess67

Giovanni 50:50 shampoo and either the 50:50 conditioner or the smooth as silk conditioner. Amazon or Sprouts or giovannicosmetics . Com. Cleanses my hair and softens beautifully with enough protein that perks up my waves.

bubblygranolachick

Cantu

kellygrrrl328

Washing my hair only twice a week seems to be the best for me, and switching between product brands helps. I like Nutrafol twice a month. I like the Kevin Murphy anti-aging. My hairdresser uses Milbon. I live in Palm Springs and I have dry hair anyway, so twice a week is plenty for me.

sparklepuppies6

I’ve been loving Ouai detox shampoo, then living proof full shampoo, living proof full conditioner, and a little olaplex oil before drying. I’ve tried so many and this routine has been great so far

Grendelbeans

I swear by Miele Organics Rosemary Mint shampoo, conditioner, and leave in conditioner. I have struggled to find shampoos that don’t dry my hair out, and conditioners that don’t weigh my hair down, and I feel like I have finally hit the jackpot. Additionally, this line contains biotin and rosemary, which are supposed to be great for strengthening hair. I have fine wavy hair, but this particular Miele product line is for all hair types.

ShinyLizard

At this advice of several people on this group I'm giving Ouai shampoo and conditioner a try. Absolutely LOVE it, which I'd better, to justify the price.

historicalcabbage

Thank you so much for your answers! I’m going with Redken Volume Injection.

bellboots

I use the pink Angel hair shampoo bar from Lush. It’s been so life changing for my fine hair.

Puzzleheaded-One-546

Okay I have bleached long blonde hair. Here is what has worked for me: I love the Kristen ess light pink shampoo and conditioner bottles. Those are the best I have found for drugstore pricing for how my hair feels after and the days in between wash. Last night I got L’Oréal elvive repairing conditioner as recommended in here, I hated how it felt on my hair. Odele leave in conditioner saved it (I loved the way it’s a 10 leave in spray felt too, got it half priced at tj maxx but I ran out.) other then those, olaplaex and ouai makes my hair feel great but they are hype brands that are pretty pricey but if you can afford it I’d always go that way. Haven’t tried the nicer stuff like Paul Mitchell, redken and biolage but I’d love too. Also the Pantene daily moisture pro v shampoo is GREAT

Fivedayhangovers

Unite Boosta. Doesn’t with down my hair at all

skulskcc01

I like seen, dr for hair and unite 7

missybee7

My biggest recommendation for nice hair is to make sure you have soft water. A good water softener will change you life.

withers0811

Currently - redken volume injection and pureology leave in conditioner Previous - Kristin Ess “the one” with either it’s a 10 or L’Oréal multi-benefit leave-in conditioner

Hubs_not_interested

Verb ghost conditioner is amazing!! Highly recommend for fine hair.

UnitedIntroverts

Me: Fine, straight hair. Wash daily. I currently use Biolage Volume Bloom. Wash daily and condition occasionally (just the ends) I used Olaplex for awhile and it was too heavy. My favorite was discontinued. Bath and Body Works Orange Ginger.

tobania

I absolutely love the verb ghost line, every product from it. Even other verb products are some of my favorites (dry shampoo and texture spray)

SimpleVegetable5715

It may be old school, but when I was bleaching and coloring my hair a lot, I liked Biolage hydrating shampoo and conditioner. There's a good store brand of it at Sally's Beauty Supply, and I look for bottles of it when they go on clearance at CVS and Walgreens (companies change designs on bottles a lot, so it's the same formula, but a different design, then all the old design goes on sale). This brand made my hair shine a not look damaged better than any product I've used. A little bit goes a long way on fine hair, so that also justified the cost. What is most likely to make your hair fall out is the hair bleach, not any shampoo or conditioner. I have been using cassia obovata (sometimes called neutral henna) masks on my hair for deep conditioning, since it's damaged from the bleach. 100% cassia won't interfere with hair dyes and bleaches. The horror stories that you hear about online are from tampered and adulterated products. Since it's more popular now than it was about a decade ago, there's plenty of reputable sellers out there. A basic recipe is to mix the herb powder with lukewarm chamomile tea until it is a yogurt/thick pancake batter consistency. Then apply this to your hair, cover it with a plastic shower cap, and let it stay in your hair 2-3 hours. It also adds shine back to hair dulled from damage, and it coats fine hair, so it feels thicker. I wash my hair daily, but it makes my strands feel thicker for about 2 weeks after doing the hair mask. It doesn't deposit any color onto hair. I'd suggest for fine hair, in the future, do not use bleach with higher than 20 volume developer. It will just process slower, but it's less damaging than the standard 30 volume developer.

Sharp-Button9234

Literally was just coming here to ask this question. Thank you.

lizardkenny

I like the Pureology Sheer Moisture line, it’s a lightweight version of the normal moisturizing products. You can always try the small versions for a more reasonable price to decide if you like something before committing to a large size.

Ok-Duck9106

I use Unite 7 second shampoo, conditioner and detangler.

kilgore_shout

I love Ouai shampoo and condition met for fine hair and R&Co Dallas

PrettyCrumpet

KMS Moist Repair

sciencefaire

I love color wow and redken acidic bonding.

RevolutionaryAd8406

L'Anza Healing Volume Thickening Shampoo and I rotate conditioners. Alterna and L'anza are overall favorite s+c. I also just started using L'oreal Professional Vitamino Color leave in and it's AMAZING.  I have fine, high density hair w highlights.

JungFuPDX

Wash once a week with Opalex and do a rinse with opalex #3 mid week. I don’t use a hair dryer, a curling iron or a straightener- I use old school sponge rollers on wet hair overnight for big hair that lasts for days or even do a twisted bun on top with scrunchie with med wet hair for a day and then take it out and I have body for days! I have some bleached highlights but I’ve toned down the color because of breakage and now my hair is in the best shape it’s been in for decades. I don’t know what hair type I have - It’s textures is fine but the density is thick.

NewLife_21

If I want a lot of moisture, I use the Pantene moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. The rest of the time I use whatever I find at the dollar store that won't set off my asthma. For me, the smell is a huge issue so I have to be careful. That's also why I often go to the dollar store or look for the cheaper shampoos. Most of them are light scented and keep my head clean. I wash/condition every other day and don't blow dry more than maybe once a year. If I can find my blow dryer. It tends to get lost. 😂 I also don't dye my hair a lot. When I was indulging in that it was red/auburn/brown.

ThotsforTaterTots

I love Oribe, personally. I’m currently using the gold lust line, but I’ve tried several products and none of them have disappointed.

TheIronLady91

Favorite products?

sciencefaire

I love oribe products.

Shineon615

Kristen Ess The One/Signature shampoo and conditioner for me has been the best drugstore product that saved me after postpartum hair loss.

otternautfoxtrot

My go to for daily use is the sulfate free L’Oréal ever pure moisturizer line.

Accomplished-Mind258

Sulfates are fine-haired people’s saving grace. The gunk that forms from not getting all the oil out is a nightmare ( at least for me). Sulfate free shampoos leave oil behind to form a barrier which we don’t need. Sulfates aren’t the devil, that’s just marketing. I’m actually surprised when any person in these subs suggests it. Glad you found something that works to your satisfaction, though.

doyourhomework51

I totally agree! I’ve tried so many sulfate-free shampoos and they all leave my fine, blonde hair looking dark/dirty at the roots. My hair looks so much better after shampooing with regular shampoos. And my hair also loves conditioner with silicones (gasp!)

Accomplished-Mind258

Yes! I don’t know how to live without my sulfates. The fewer moisturizers in my shampoo the happier I am. Lol.
