Are you sure it was the same fish? Unless you saw it repeatedly going for the maggot it could have been a school. Smaller perch like that hunt in big packs. As they get bigger they hunt in smaller and smaller packs.

It looked the same size but the canal was dirty so it could be different
I started with a little perch like that ...50 years ago !!! Had some truly amazing catches over tge years, a lifetime fishing π£
